BULLANTS SECURE 3-PEAT OF FLAGS Cabramatta Bullants No1 State Pennant side have successfully defended their Pennant Flag at Forster and in doing so won for unprecedented third time in a row. The Bullants commenced their defence of the title with a 71-45 Round 1 victory over Wisemans Park. Round 2 saw them defeat Soldiers Point 88-32. With a new format this year, Quarter Finals were part of the format and luckily for the Bullants this was case as they lost their Round 3 match against Raymond Terrace 50-56 to finish second in their Section. Their Quarter Final was against Wenty Leagues and ran out with a comfortable 73-44 victory. The Bullants then faced fellow Zone 12 club in Mount Lewis in the semi-final. The Bullants showed that their form was improving the longer they played as they scored a 72-62 victory over the Lions. The Final was against the only other club that has scored a 3 peat in State No 1 flags, Taren Point. Ray “Razor” Pearse’s rink was in white hot form as they built the foundation of the 71-37 victory with a 34-8 rink win. Ray said on the victory “It’s an unbelievable achievement by the club and we are ecstatic on the victory. The boys continued to improve over the weekend and we were at our best at the business end of the competition.” Mounties ventured to Warilla in search of the Grade 6 Pennant flag. From the outset Mounties were in great form winning all of their round robin matches in close contests. Their form continued with a 65-40 victory over Cardiff in the quarter final and a 68-39 win over East Cessnock in the semi. Unfortunately for Mounties they played a very strong Kempsey Macleay RSL team in the final, which they had already defeated in the round robin, to lose 64-46. Mounties should be extremely proud of their achievements.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN WRAP The 2019 Australian Open would be described as the Lansdowne Women’s District and Zone 12 Open. The number of players who had success from these two bowling association was phenomenal. Alongside Ray Pearse’s victory with Aron Sherriff in the Men’s Pairs, there was success across most disciplines at the Open. St Johns Park’s Dawn Hayman had a fantastic Open. Dawn teamed with fellow NSW representative Genevieve Delves to win the Woman’s Pairs over fellow Lansdowne Women’s District players in Jessica Hogan and Carman Anderson (Cabramatta). Dawn said on their victory “It was a hard fought win especially when we were down 11-5 against Jess and Carmen in a high quality match. Gen and I are extremely happy with the win as we combined well throughout the tournament. We were super excited about our first AO pairs.” Dawn also reached the semi-final of the Women’s Singles before being defeated by eventual champion in Natasha Scott. Cabramatta’s Jessica Hogan was another person who had a fantastic tournament. As mentioned she was runner up in the Women’s Pairs but also teamed with fellow Lansdowne players Brianna Smith (St Johns Park) Louise Cronan and Tiffany Brodie to be runners up in the Women’s Fours. Brianna Smith (St Johns Park) showed she has an enormous future in the game. Alongside her runner up in the Women’s Fours, Brianna reached the quarter-final of the Women’s Singles where she was also defeated by Natasha Scott. The awesome foursome of mums took out the Women’s Fours and this team included Anne Johns and Kelsey Cottrell (St Johns Park) with fellow St Johns Park pennant player Rebecca Van Asch and Lynsey Clarke. Other notable achievements during the tournament was Carl Healey (Cabramatta) reaching the Men’s Singles semi-finals. Aaron Wilson (Cabramatta) was skipping of the Men’s Fours team that were semi-finalists. Don Strickland (St Johns Park) teamed with Julio Posadas (Chester Hill) to reach the semi-finals of the Over 60’sMen’s Pairs. Erin Swatridge reached the semi-finals of the Junior U18’s Girls Singles and was defeated by the eventual champion. Congratulations to all the players involved.

ZONE PENNANT FINALS WRAP The 2019 Zone Pennant finals were played out at St Johns Park in what could only be described as a fantastic weekend of bowls. St Johns Park and Cabramatta fought out the Grade 2 final and after a halfway mark lead to the Bullants, the Saints powered home for a 64-54 victory and their 4th Grade 2 title in a row. Birrong Sports made up for the disappointment of losing last year’s final as favourites when they defeated St Johns Park 54-49. Padstow had a huge number of supporters over the 2 days. They defeated favourites Picnic Point then waited for St Johns Park for the final and they also made up for last year’s disappointment of losing the final as they defeated St Johns Park 61- 50. Celebrations were long and hard at The Stow. Grade 5 saw two teams with different season form battle it out and it was Mount Lewis who stormed over the top of St Johns Park to win the flag by 68-63 with each rink only a difference of 1-2 shots. Grade 6 was fought over 2 days and Mounties adjusted best to the fast greens as they defeated Birrong Sports 66-48. It had been a very emotional week for the Mounties club and this was the perfect remedy to celebrate long into the night. Grade 7 saw 3 teams, St Johns Park, Birrong Sports and Campsie South the form teams of the competition and it was St Johns Park who won by winning 2 games and head back for another tilt at winning the Grade 7 State flag.

HOLLYWOODS PASSING SHOCKS THE BOWLS COMMUNITY
Ray began playing bowls at Revesby Workers in August 1977. Ray had an immediate effect on the members of the club with his great sportsmanship which he brought from his Tennis playing days. Ray won every championship at Revesby Workers except for the Minor Singles as he won the Major Singles at his first attempt. Ray won over 30 club championship titles and was a life member of Revesby Workers. Ray was well known to always take a new bowler or a player who was struggling as his team mate and play in a club championship until they won. Ray rarely defended a title and was always looking for the next new bowler to enter into a competition. Ray got the name of Hollywood by often finishing last on championship days and playing to the crowd as he loved an audience. One tremendous asset about Ray was over the many years he skipped, he rarely got upset with his team as he knew they were trying their best. Ray won several pennants over the years with the highlight being winners of the State 3 pennant in 2013 as the Manager. Ray was President of Revesby Workers on 3 different occasions spanning many years with his last stint being over 10 years long. His gentle leadership was a key to the success of the amalgamation between Revesby and Revesby Workers. Rays dedication to club administration was
not just left to Revesby Workers. Ray served on many Southern Metropolitan District Committees and Zone 12. Ray was
well known throughout the bowls community as he entered numerous tournaments and always had a smile and a beer in hand. Ray was such a dedicated clubman he would lead committees, pick people up so they could come to the club to play pennants or just for a game of social bowls. Rays last game at Revesby Workers was playing a mixed social BBQ day with his mates and after he had a few quiet ales trying to solve the problems of the world and enjoying everybody’s company. Ray’s passing came as a massive shock to all of us, with Aron Sherriff dedicating his Australian Open Singles victory to him. My great mate Ray ‘Hollywood” Hopkins was 70. By Geoff Went
JUNIOR FOURS STATE CHAMPIONS The Zone 12 Junior Fours Champions of Ryan Klem , Erin Swatridge, Mia Hotson and Mathew Swan (Cabramatta) have won the State Junior Fours Championships in dramatic fashion over Zone 10. Going into the last end they needed 2 to tie or 3 to win. Mathew drew 2 fantastic shots to hold 2 with 1 bowl to be played. Unfortunately for the Zone 10 skip he promoted a Zone 12 bowl for third shot. Congratulations to al, the players and the parents for their great support
