Education for chil-dren is more than about being in a classroom. It is bey-ond any degree. It is something that will be a part of a child’s life forever.

From the time they are born, to the time they pass on, they are constantly being educated.

They begin with colors, numbers, shapes and ani-mals.

Then they graduate to making friends, being so-cial, building relationships.

It goes on and on, from learning to be responsible,

making good decisions, and building a healthy lifestyle.

The purpose of education for children in a long-term perspective is to constantly grow and evolve.

The purpose is to build and expand your conscious-

ness. It is simply about being aware or unaware.

Often times the media and schools market the impor-tance of education in rela-tion to landing the perfect job.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. Investing in children’s education only for the reward of finding the perfect job only limits them to how they could really be living their dream life.

As the world changes, our thinking and the way we re-spond to things do as well.

Education is the only way you can gain a wholistic un-derstanding of the world.

According to Abraham Maslow, an American psy-chologist, he believed there are many stages you will need to get through in life.

The first being, physiolog-ical needs. This includes things like food, water & air. The second is, safety needs.

This could be a home and employment. Next, we have belongingness & love needs.

This is love & acceptance from friends, family, and in-timacy as well. Following that, we have esteem ‘Egoic’ needs. This is said to be recognition, self-status, confidence and respect.

Next is self-actualization, referring to creativity, moral-ity, problem solving, and even contributions to soci-ety.

Lastly, we have self-tran-scendence. This is high-lighting true spirituality and enlightenment.

True long-term education is important in a child’s life because it will literally mold them into who they will be. It is important to remember that education is more than books and classrooms.

The education provided to children as they grow, will be what is needed to reach the top of the tier.

This is more important than any job, because be-coming aware will aid in preparation for a long healthy lifestyle and/or ca-reer.

What we learn as children will stay with us forever. You must keep education alive.

Do not fall into the mistake of thinking it will ever end. The minute you stop learn-ing, is the minute you stop growing.

Education is marathon and not a race. We must keep watering our gardens (brains) with potent food & nourishing content. It is then that we will reach out high-est self.

How much does education really mean to the life of each child?By Paishance Welch

HOUSTON, TX - Dr. Calvin Mackie, leader of STEM Global Action (SGA), called on edu-cators, government and corporate America to support teaching Black and other children of color science, technol-ogy, engineering and math (STEM) skills at earlier ages to better prepare them for the jobs and careers today and in the future.

Speaking recently at a forum sponsored by alliantgroup, a Texas management and tax consulting firm,

Dr. Mackie noted that Black children toss footballs and bas-ketballs while they are in “the cradle,” but rarely are intro-duced to STEM as youngsters.

Without the early focus on these topics, a wide gap exists between Black and Whites in STEM college graduates and jobs.

“We have to meet kids where they are and start to expose them at the beginning,” Dr. Mackie said, adding that “in Texas…every Black and Brown boy touches the football before the age of four.”

Further, Dr. Mackie said that as the nation engages a 4thIn-dustrial Revolution centered around technological ad-vances, it’s imperative that ev-eryone has sufficient STEM skills to advance in our society and have successful life out-comes.

“We have to talk about STEM for all. We've got to make sure that the re-sources…are applied equally to communities,” said Dr. Mac-kie, who holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Math-ematics and Mechanical Engi-neering (Morehouse College), as well as a Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. (Georgia Tech).

Dr. Mackie spoke at alliant-group’s STEM Summit: Clos-ing the Gap from Classroom to Industry, which discussed strategies on closing the STEM gap in America.

African American workers make up 9% of the STEM workforce, smaller than the 11% share of all employed U.S. adults.

And, Blacks are only 5% of those in engineering and archi-tecture and 6% in life and physical science jobs.

Data also shows that roughly 20% of Whites and students of color declare STEM subjects as majors entering college, but nearly 40% of minority stu-dents change their majors and more than 20% leave school without earning a degree. While Blacks, Native Ameri-cans, Alaska Natives and His-panics collectively form 27% of the population, they account for only 11% of America’s science and engineering workers.

Dr. Mackie strives to expand STEM education in com-munities of color by bringing programing into disadvantaged neighborhoods.

In 2013, Dr. Mackie founded STEM NOLA, a New Orleans-based, non-profit that delivers STEM education in churches, community centers and schools.

STEM NOLA has impacted more than 70,000 students, 17,000 families and 2,150 schools across the U.S. and in five other countries.

“We created a pathway for people to give back,” Dr. Mac-kie said, explaining that his programs enlist volunteers from companies in local com-munities to work with the stu-dents, and enhance their STEM skills.

Last month, Dr. Mackie, a former tenured Tulane Univer-sity engineering professor, launched STEM Global Action, a campaign and network of af-filiates that advocate and de-liver STEM education to children, parents and com-

munities. SGA prioritizes providing

STEM learning opportunities to K-12 students in low-income and communities of color.

Calling for a “Reckoning on STEM,” Dr. Mackie believes advancing STEM education can help counter the effect of racism and societal inequities by creating pathways to quality jobs and careers.

Alliantgroup’s corporate mis-sion is to strengthen American businesses through reinvest-ment in innovation and job growth. Also attending their

summit were Wil-liam T. Harris,

CEO of Space Center Houston; Dr. Juliet Breeze,

M.D, CEO

of Next Level Urgent Care; former congressman Rick White, who is CEO of Technet; Deirdre Ricketts, alliantgroup Director of STEAM Education; and Chuck Wilson, Executive Director of National Systems Contractors Association.

During the discussion, Dr. Mackie noted the importance of role models, citing the ex-perts that he has called upon to work with his own children.

But he stressed that much more is needed, especially for the children in under-resourced communities, who don’t have access to expansive STEM networks like his own.

“We need more than role models,” he asserted. “We have to marshal resources, technology and human re-sources back into those com-munities, so those kids can see, touch and feel people who look like them, even some who don’t look like them, so they know that they can achieve at those levels, too.”

KENOSHA– Car-thage president John Swallow has pro-moted Michele Han-cock, Ed.D., to vice president of college culture for inclusion, a new senior leadership position that con-tinues a campus-wide commitment to an equitable learning and work environment.

Alongside her teaching duties as an education pro-fessor, Hancock has spear-headed some of the college’s primary equity and inclusion initiatives.

Besides serving as the college’s director of diver-sity for two years, Hancock developed training pro-grams for faculty, staff, and first-year students.

“There is no aspect of Carthage’s work in diver-sity, equity, and inclusion that has not benefited from Dr. Hancock’s expertise, and no one is better pre-pared to meet Carthage’s current needs and advance the institution,” said Pres-ident Swallow.

As a member of the Ex-ecutive Staff, she’ll work with the president and other top leaders to ensure that students from all back-grounds succeed.

Hancock will lead the Of-fice of Equity and Inclusion for Culture Change, now an independent unit in the Car-thage organizational struc-ture.

“We have the potential to create a culture of inclusion

where every individual knows they add value to the Carthage community, an endeavor that is both challenging and notewor-thy,” said Hancock.

“The task before us is to institutionalize inclusive practices that support growth and help all to flour-ish.”

Among her responsibil-ities, Hancock is tasked with implementing the ex-pansive anti-racism plan that President Swallow in-troduced last year. Its ac-tion steps fall under three overarching goals:

• Close the gap in gradu-ation rates.

• Expand resources for di-versity, equity, and inclu-sion.

• Infuse the teaching of U.S. racial history through-out the curriculum.

Hancock taught at the elementary school level for 25 years, rose to chief ad-ministrator of diversity and leadership in Rochester, New York, and oversaw a 6 percentage-point increase in the graduation rate as Kenosha Unified district su-perintendent.

Since joining the Car-thage faculty in 2014, she has launched the Urban Teacher Preparation Pro-gram and established a J-Term service learning tour to Africa.

The new appointment takes effect Sept. 1.

MKE Cnty’s ARPA Task Force endorses strate-gic framework for funding and rec-ommends proposals to fight homelessness and COVID-19

Recommendations will be heard next by the County Board

Recently, Milwaukee County’s American Res-cue Plan Act (ARPA) Task Force endorsed a strategic framework to guide its future work to al-locate $183.6 million in federal funds, and also endorsed two emergency funding proposals that seek to strengthen the county’s pandemic re-sponse and its support for individuals facing homelessness and precarious situations.

The group also approved a framework for community outreach and engagement to begin this fall.

A strategic framework for Milwaukee County’s ARPA allocations

The ARPA Task Force unanimously approved a strategic framework providing guidelines for how to allocate Milwaukee County’s $183.6 mil-lion in ARPA funding. The proposal, introduced by Director of Grants & Special Projects Ashley

Adsit, recommended that: • 63% of ARPA dollars ($115,728,599) be allo-

cated to “revenue loss recovery.” Sample expen-ditures could include stabilizing government services; addressing the county’s backlog of capital projects and deferred maintenance; in-vesting in technology, service delivery or facil-ities to realize cost-savings or efficiencies; and investing in new revenue generating strategies.

• 20% of ARPA dollars ($36,739,238) be allo-cated to “community support.” Sample expendi-tures could include immediate, limited-term financial assistance for individuals; evidence-based strategies to address targeted social de-terminants of health; and collaborative initiatives that match other private and public funds.

• 13% of ARPA dollars ($23,880,505) be allo-cated to “COVID-19 mitigation.” Sample expen-ditures could include responding to COVID-19 mitigation needs (vaccination administration, PPE, testing, physical distancing measures); culturally-relevant and effective communications planning to support COVID mitigation; preven-tion of spread in congregate settings and other dense work sites; and payroll expenses for pub-lic health, safety and other staff responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• 4% of ARPA dollars ($7,347,848) be allo-cated to “fund administration.”

Sample expenditures could include complying with fiscal, programmatic and federal reporting requirements; sponsoring project-level eval-uation and community engagement contracts; and establishing data collections processes.
