St. Mark AME is an institution onthat corner with enviable pro-grams that respond to the congre-gation and the neighbors whoreside near it. Dating back to 1869, St Mark

was the first Black church in thecity of Milwaukee. It was firsthoused in a former Marshall Fieldsstore front and for 30 years, St.Marks AME was the only Blackchurch In Milwaukee.St Mark AME Church was

founded by Ezekiel Gillespie, whoalso sued board of electors of thecity for the right to vote in 1865.Born in Tennessee, in 1818, Gille-spie bought his freedom from slav-ery and moved to Indiana before

coming to Milwaukee. He soldgroceries and worked as a railroadporter while actively promoting theUnderground Railroad that aidedBlacks escaping slavery andseeking freedom in the North. With 147 years of Milwaukee

history, Reverend Darryl Williams,St. Mark current pastor, has beena strong minister, educator, com-munity advocate and missionaryleader at this impactful religiousanchor. His congregation remains one of

the oldest and most establishedchurches with many iconic Mil-waukee families. Throughout, St. Mark has been

comprised of Black professionals

who promoted upward mobilityand middle class respectability;consistent with the mission of thechurch. And it leads with thatsame passion today. Reverend Williams has been at

St. Mark for twelve years, havingcome to Milwaukee by way ofFlint, Michigan; and before thatEvansville, Indiana; and before

that Chicago, Illinois, his birth-place. He comes from a strong African

American Episcopal church family. Both his uncle and his maternalgrandfather were well respectedAME pastors in Chicago. Reverend Williams was literally

born into the African AmericanEpiscopal Church and now be-

lieves he is being called to a newministry within it.“I love travel, he explained. It

ur clergy are major players in build-ing communities and their ministryto the spiritual, emotional, social andcivic life of the church is unparal-leled. That certainly has been truewith our shepherd, Pastor Darryl

Williams, of St. Mark A.M.E. Church, located at1616 W Atkinson Avenue.

O St. Mark AME Church, one of the oldest Blackchurches in Milwaukee.

“It has impressed upon me thatmy ministry is global. Fulfilling mycalling as a Bishop would bettermatch my calling with my interestand passion. “The Bishop’s work is adminis-

trative as well. I would have tomatch pastors with local congre-gations in an effort to help thosecongregations carry out their mis-sion to their communities. “I hope to be victorious for the

office of Bishop because I believeI am ready to teach, preach, totravel, to spread these gifts andgraces across the world.” In 2013,Pastor Williams ministered inLusaka, Zambia. “That was awonderful experience!”“I’ve been to Africa four times

and India once. In all of thesecountries, we visit the orphan-ages, blighted communities, webring resources, we preach theGospel we teach,” he shares withenthusiasm. “The needs are so great. Sim-

ple things like toothbrushes andtoothpaste, diapers, feminine arti-cles, many of the things we takefor granted, are needed and sosincerely appreciated.” Pastor Williams shares that they

are able to see God in the eyes ofthose they minister to in thesecountries. It reminds me of thescripture, “As you have done tothe least of these, you have doneit unto me.” “St. Mark has been a major con-

tributor to the purchase of suppliesthrough the Williams for BishopCampaign. And now MCJ read-ers can help this ministry by con-tributing, as well. You can give through: Williams

for Bishop.org and the donation ispaid through Pay Pal, or you cansend your donation through themail to: 6626 N 114th St, Milwau-kee, WI, 53224. I am encouragingall our readers to support this mostworthy effort and the candidacy ofRev Darryl R. Williams. One certainly selfishly wonders

about St. Mark and the outstand-ing job Reverend Williams hasdone here. He is the third pastor since the

untimely death of Reverend andMrs. Lovell Johnson, the historicpastor many old timers remember.Reverend Johnson served for 27years.After Reverend Johnson, there

was Reverend Robinson from1991-2001, and Reverend Cousinfrom 2001 to 2004, so PastorWilliams appointment in 2004, topresent, exceeds both prior pas-toral appointments. The appointment to St Mark will

be one of the resident Bishopsmost important. Rev Williamsstates, “I would hope it is someonewho is community focused and so-cially conscious. That would beconsistent with the tradition of StMark.”There are over 2 million mem-

bers, with 6100 pastors and 21

bishops in the World Church. Andthe church serves in five conti-nents, including South America, North America Europe, Africa

and Asia, so meeting the needs ofthe flock has broad implications. The African Methodist EpiscopalChurch is indeed global in scopeand membership.Pastor Williams related, “The

2016 General Conference willprobably have about 7000 atten-dees, from all over the world; with1800 delegates from 20 districts atthe July 6-13, 2016 meeting inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania. This will be a major meeting. “In

addition to electing Bishops, Thedenomination will spend most ofthose days dealing with proposedlegislation to govern the church.Pastor Williams desires that

those who know the power ofprayer pray with him for the fruit-fulness of the Conference and forhis elevation. “I know I desire to help the ‘least

of these. I am passionate aboutbeing a presence in these areasthat so badly need our love andpresence. Jesus said go ye andmake Disciples all over the world.I want to do just that.” Continuing he said,” Opportuni-

ties abound all over the world. Ibelieve I have been called to makesure the African Methodist Episco-pal Church Stays in motion, meet-ing these needs. When there is nomotion, we are static. That leads to death. If it was

possible to do an autopsy on achurch that has died, I am sure thereport will read,’ they stoppedmoving forward and focusing out-ward.’ ““I want the Kingdom of God to

expand. And it can and it will. It willtake people who have thecourage, the passion and who arewilling to make the sacrifice. I amconfident that I fit the bill.” Remember, he seeks our

prayers, well wishes and support. Please refer to the two ways tomake payments to the campaignabove. Refer to the phone numberto express your well wishes. Hewould appreciate it.The Milwaukee Community

Journal is making a donation tothe Williams for Bishop Fund, andI am giving as well..Because weknow that Pastor Darryl Williamswill continue to do a mighty work. St. Mark AME Church is a paid

subscriber of the Milwaukee Com-munity Journal Weekend Edition.Their paid subscriptions buildcommunity and help to live out themission of the AME church...1) tominister to the social, spiritual andphysical development of all peo-ple; 2) to seek out and save thelost; 3) to serve the needy with aduty to continue to encourage allmembers to become involved inchurch training; 4) to make validGod’s biblical principles.“We are committed to spread

God’s liberating gospel and pro-vide continued programs to en-hance social development of allpeople, “an animated PastorWilliams reiterates. We applaud the good works of

hopefully, soon to be, Bishop Dar-ryl Williams, a 2016 MCJ 40th An-

niversary Beacon of Light. And we applaud the St. Mark

AME church family for theydemonstrate daily a high value oneducation. They illuminate theircall to decry injustices and racialdiscrimination. St. Marks’ church body works in-

dividually and collectively to elimi-nate racial disparities in health, jobopportunities, housing and busi-ness development; and they pro-mote and work to encourageequality regardless of race. This strong foundation will serve

them well today and well into thefuture. So, as requested, we ex-tend support to Pastor DarrylWilliams in his pursuit to beelected a Bishop. May God blessus all and may His will be ourguide. Amen

To commemorate and me-morialize this last event, be-fore entering Canaan, Joshuacommanded twelve men toeach pick up a large stonefrom the Jordan and carry it toGilgal, where Cairn waserected. A similar monument oftwelve stones was erected atthe site of the crossing. These monuments served toremind people of all the gen-erations of the miraculous in-tervention of God in thehistory of His people.

Today, these stones in theSt. Mark edifice, should re-mind us that God has pro-vided the way for us to glorifyHim, so we built this edifice toHim. Throughout the long strug-gle to erect this building, Godprovided a way.St. Mark is an expression ofour history and our faith. Theanvil is our Connectional sym-bol historically established in ablacksmith shop. The very shape of the build-ing is expressive of that fact.

Replicas of the anvil are onthe front of the building (16thStreet entrance) representingthe three points in the formerAME motto: “God our Father,Christ our Redeemer, Man ourBrother.” The AME motto was up-dated to represent four em-phasis points in 2008 to: “Godour Father; Christ our Re-deemer; Holy Spirit our Com-forter, and Human Kind ourFamily.”Inside the Sanctuary thereare three aisles leading to thealtar. These symbolize the threemanifestations of our oneGod; Father, Son, and HolyGhost – The Trinity. There are 27 windows onthe north wall of the Sanctuaryrepresenting the number ofBooks in the New Testament. There are 12 windows on

the south wall of the Sanctu-ary, which represent theTwelve Apostles. Combiningthe numbers 27 and 12 we get39, which is the number ofbooks in the Old Testament. There is one pulpit lectern inthe center of the pulpit-ros-trum. This indicates the centralityof the Gospel of Jesus Christand the word of God, in thelives of His people. The low point of the sanctu-ary ceiling represents humilitybefore God and the high pointof the ceiling suggests thehelp and inspiration the wor-shipper receives when he liftshis eyes unto the hills fromwhence cometh our help.Outside on the front lawnstands a cross on top of a 40-foot campanile. This crosssymbolizes the victory whichwe have in Jesus Christ.

The 1st African AmericanChurch in Wisconsin, founded1869.The word African means that

the church was organized bypeople of African descent andheritage. It does not mean that the

church was founded in Africa,

or that it was for persons ofAfrican descent only.AMEThe church’s roots is of

the family of Methodistchurches. Methodism providesan orderly system of rules andregulations and places empha-sis on a plain and simplegospel.Episcopal refers to the form

of government under which thechurch operates. The chief executive and ad-

ministrative officers of theAfrican Methodist Episcopaldenomination are the Bishopsof the church. The A.M.E. Church MissionThe Mission of the African

Methodist Episcopal Church isto minister to the spiritual, intel-lectual, physical, emotional,

and environmental needs of allpeople by spreading Christ’sliberating gospel through wordand deed. At every level of the Connec-

tion and in every local church, the African Methodist EpiscopalChurch shall engage in carry-ing out the spirit of the originalFree African Society, out ofwhich the A.M.E. Churchevolved: that is, to seek outand save the lost, and servethe needy through a continuingprogram of (1) preaching thegospel, (2) feeding the hungry,(3) clothing the naked, (4)housing the homeless, (5)cheering the fallen, (6) provid-ing jobs for the jobless, (7) ad-ministering to the needs ofthose in prisons, hospitals,

nursing homes, asylums andmental institutions, senior citi-zens’ homes; caring for thesick, the shut-in, the mentallyand socially disturbed, and (8)encouraging thrift and eco-nomic advancement.A.M.E. Church BeleifsThe Motto “God Our Father,

Christ Our Redeemer, Man OurBrother” is a great summary ofwhat the African MethodistEpiscopal Church believes. Also known as the A.M.E.

Church for short, the denomi-nation is Methodist in terms ofits basic doctrine and order ofworship. It was born, throughadversity, of the Methodistchurch and to this day does notdiffer in any major way fromwhat all Methodists believe.

The split from the mainbranch of the Methodist Churchwas not a result of doctrinal dif-ferences but rather the result ofa time period that was markedby man’s intolerance of his fel-low man, based on the color ofhis skin. It was a time of slavery, op-

pression and the dehumaniza-tion of people of Africandescent and many of these un-Christian practices werebrought into the church, forcingRichard Allen and a group offellow worshippers of color toform a splinter denomination ofthe Methodist Church. To learn more about the con-

The AME Church: It’s mission and its beliefs...

The AMEC grew out of the FreeAfrican Society (FAS) which RichardAllen, Absalom Jones, and others es-tablished in Philadelphia in 1787.When officials at St. George’s MECpulled blacks off their knees whilepraying, FAS members discovered just how

far American Methodists would go toenforce racial discrimination againstAfrican Americans. Hence, these members of St.

George’s made plans to transformtheir mutual aid society into anAfrican congregation. Although mostwanted to affiliate with the ProtestantEpiscopal Church, Allen led a smallgroup who resolved to remainMethodists. In 1794 Bethel AME was dedi-

cated with Allen as pastor. To estab-lish Bethel’s independence frominterfering white Methodists, Allen, a

former Delaware slave, successfullysued in the Pennsylvania courts in1807 and 1815 for the right of hiscongregation to exist as an inde-pendent institution. Because blackMethodists in other middle Atlanticcommunities encountered racismand desired religious autonomy,Allen called them to meet in Philadel-phia to form a new Wesleyan de-nomination, the AME.The geographical spread of the

AMEC prior to the Civil War wasmainly restricted to the Northeastand Midwest. Major congregationswere established in Philadelphia,New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, Balti-more, Washington, DC, Cincinnati,Chicago, Detroit, and other largeBlacksmith’s Shop cities. Numerous northern communities

also gained a substantial AME pres-ence. Remarkably, the slave states

of Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri,Louisiana, and, for a few years,South Carolina, became additionallocations for AME congregations. The denomination reached the Pa-cific Coast in the early 1850’s withchurches in Stockton, Sacramento,San Francisco, and other places inCalifornia. Moreover, Bishop MorrisBrown established the Canada An-nual Conference. The most significant era of denom-

inational development occurred dur-ing the Civil War and Reconstruction.Oftentimes, with the permission ofUnion army officials AME clergymoved into the states of the collaps-ing Confederacy to pull newly freedslaves into their denomination. “ISeek My Brethren,” the title of anoften repeated sermon thatTheophilus G. Steward preached inSouth Carolina, became a clarion

call to evangelize fellow blacks inGeorgia, Florida, Alabama, Texas, and many other parts of the south.Hence, in 1880 AME membershipreached 400,000 because of its rapidspread below the Mason-Dixon line. When Bishop Henry M. Turnerpushed African Methodism acrossthe Atlantic into Liberia and SierraLeone in 1891 and into South Africain 1896, the AME now laid claim toadherents on two continents. While the AME is doctrinally

Methodist, clergy, scholars, and laypersons have written importantworks which demonstrate the distinc-tive theology and praxis which havedefined this Wesleyan body. Bishop Benjamin W. Arnett, in an

address to the 1893 World’s Parlia-ment of Religions, reminded the au-dience of the presence of blacks inthe formation of Christianity.

Bishop Benjamin T. Tanner wrotein 1895 in The Color of Solomon –What? that biblical scholars wronglyportrayed the son of David as a whiteman. In the post civil rights era the-ologians James H. Cone, Cecil W.Cone, and Jacqueline Grant whocame out of the AME tradition cri-tiqued Euro-centric Christianity andAfrican American churches for theirshortcomings in fully impacting theplight of those oppressed by racism, sexism, and economic disadvantage.Today, the African Methodist Epis-

copal Church has membership intwenty Episcopal Districts in thirty-nine countries on five continents. The work of the Church is adminis-tered by twenty-one active bishops, and nine General Officers who man-age the departments of the Church.--Dennis C. DickersonRetired General Officer
