Circle Line’s Esplanade MRT Station Built on green foundations The new landmark of Beach Road, South Beach, boasts state-of-the-art environmental features. It recently received two Green Mark Platinum Awards from the Building and Construction Authority. In preserving the project site’s historical past, over 50 per cent of the old Beach Road camp’s existing facade has been retained to form part of the new development. This includes the Drill Hall, the birthplace of the Singapore Armed Forces, which will also maintain its verandah spaces. Archways are also reinstated to form part of a grand entrance lobby at one of the four conservation buildings. Office Tower The 34-storey office tower has secured 96 per cent occupancy with “A-list” tenants such as Facebook, Expedia and Lego Conservation of heritage buildings The former Beach Road military camp began as the headquarters of the Singapore Volunteer Corps in the 1930s and later doubled as the headquarters of the Singapore Military Forces, which was set up in 1954. After Singapore gained independence, some of the country's first military units were based here. The camp was closed in 2000 and its three buildings (blocks 1, 9 and 14) were gazetted for conservation on Oct 9, 2002, along with an adjacent building that was previously the SAF Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCO) Club.
