Message from our President… We are having great turnouts at all of our dances. Summer has left us and Fall is just begin- ning. Our September cookout was very well received and thanks to all who helped make it happen. September gave us 2 great evenings of dancing and socializing, along with SOS and our traditional club ”Free Pour” at the OD Pavilion. We saw many of our club members having good times during SOS, we certainly enjoyed ourselves. I appreciate the level of participation of so many of our club members. Thank you to our members who stay after our dances to help and clean up so that it goes very quickly. We still need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do the 50/50 at our upcoming dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. It will be “Pizza on the Club” night at our VFW dance on October 14 th ! Our “Operation Uplink” Auction & Dance is upon us this month. I hope that you all are mak- ing plans to attend and enjoy these good times. Remember to ask your businesses to make donations for our raffles and auction. I am just finished mailing out the remainder of our Uplink tickets to our club members. I hope to see them at upcoming dances. Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or want to help out. This is our opportunity to show our veterans and active duty soldiers how much we care. We have a number of veterans in our club who know how important this is. Please keep in mind the Sunday, November 6 th dance at the Lazy Turtle Bar and Grill from 1-5 PM. This dance is courtesy of Frank & Maryann Darzano, who won this dance party at our 2015 Operation Uplink Auction with DJ Terry McPhail. You can’t beat oceanfront! Message from our President…

We are having great turnouts at all of our dances. Summer has left us and Fall is just begin-

ning. Our September cookout was very well received and thanks to all who helped make it

happen. September gave us 2 great evenings of dancing and socializing, along with SOS and

our traditional club ”Free Pour” at the OD Pavilion. We saw many of our club members having

good times during SOS, we certainly enjoyed ourselves.

I appreciate the level of participation of so many of our club members. Thank you to our

members who stay after our dances to help and clean up so that it goes very quickly. We still

need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do the 50/50 at our upcoming dances.

Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. It will be “Pizza on the

Club” night at our VFW dance on October 14th!

Our “Operation Uplink” Auction & Dance is upon us this month. I hope that you all are mak-

ing plans to attend and enjoy these good times. Remember to ask your businesses to make

donations for our raffles and auction. I am just finished mailing out the remainder of our

Uplink tickets to our club members. I hope to see them at upcoming dances. Let me know if

you have any questions, concerns, or want to help out. This is our opportunity to show our

veterans and active duty soldiers how much we care. We have a number of veterans in our

club who know how important this is.

Please keep in mind the Sunday, November 6th dance at the Lazy Turtle Bar and Grill from 1-5

PM. This dance is courtesy of Frank & Maryann Darzano, who won this dance party at our

2015 Operation Uplink Auction with DJ Terry McPhail. You can’t beat oceanfront!

Our next board meeting is October13th at the VFW at 6 PM. Let us know if there are club is-

sues that we need to address. We hope to see you all on the dance floor.

Meet Some of Our Members...

Steve & Patti Smith... I was raised in San-

ford NC which is just north of Fayetteville NC.

From before hurricane Hazel we had a beach

cottage at Long Beach. Even though we lost

our cottage to Hazel we built back two years

later. Every Friday night we loaded the old

station wagon and came to the beach, winter

and summer. I kind of grew up down here as

a little beach rat. Saltwater and the love of it

never got out of my blood.

Patti hails from Hamilton Ohio. She grew up

there but moved to Kings Mountain NC back

in the 70's. We met each other while working at Freightliner Corporation. I was in Materials and she in

Production. In 1988 we were married and began our new life together. We have three children between

us. I have a son and daughter who live in the Gastonia NC area and Patti has a daughter who lives in the

Holden Beach area. We have six grandchildren (four girls and two boys).

We moved to Southport 25 years ago. We left the corporate jungle for me to come to the beach and

open my own tackle shop (Sure Catch Tackle) located at Southport Marina. For the next twelve years I

had Sure Catch Tackle, built and opened a outfitting store (Fins and Feathers Outfitters) and ran fishing

charters under Sure Catch Charters . For the last thirteen years I was the General Manager for Blackbarry

Marine.

Patti and I love the beach and dancing. I learned to do the proper shag steps from Hall of Famer Judy

Duke when she was teaching lessons at the old Chaser's Beach Club back in the early 2000's. Patti has

only been shagging for a little over a year. Patti has been saddled with bad knees since injuries from

high school but has done wonderfully with no issues other than soreness.

We feel so fortunate that our club has two dances a month. Most clubs have one a month or one a quar-

ter. Our DJ's are the best and the friendships that we have made are wonderful. Our dear friends John

Hutton and Katy O'Neal turned us on to dancing at the OD Pavilion on Sunday afternoons in North Myr-

tle Beach, "Where It All Began". We have had the most fun and have met so many people just like our-

selves "lovers of shag dancing". It's never about how good you are it's about how much fun you have.

We always leave the dance floor with a smile because that’s what shagging makes you do... SMILE.

Thanks to the SOBS for being the club that you are, a good club with good people!

WELCOME to our New Members, Re-Ups & Guests...

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST SOB… KENNETH MORFORD!

Our September 9th “Dog Days of Summer” dance at the VFW was a great success with DJ Eddie Baker and

the gourmet grilling of Pres. John Hutton, VP Chuck Boney, and Gary Goldenbaum. We had 81 SOBS and 5

guests who danced to some great beach music and enjoyed a meal of hamburgers & hotdogs with all the

trimmings. Thank you to all the members who brought salads/pasta salads and desserts and shared their

goodies with us!

Our September 23rd “End of Summer - Welcome Fall” dance had a great show-

ing at the Moose Lodge. Our Past President and DJ Robert Carter had an acci-

dent (broken arm) and was replaced at the last minute by SOBS favorite DJ

Jerry Burrage… THANK YOU JERRY! HEAL FAST, ROBERT! He kept the dance

floor full with 42 SOBS, 12 guests!

October DJ Information... Fellow SOBS… Welcome fall now, where has the year gone? I hope that those of you

who attended enjoyed SOS and our club “Freepour” at the Ocean Drive Pavilion. There

was great dancing and a good time. The DJs that we have for the remainder of the

year are some of the best DJs in today’s Beach Music. Spinning the discs for our danc-

es this month are:

Gene Sistare at the VFW, Friday, October 14th

and

John “Fessa” Hook at the Moose Lodge, Friday, October 28th

On October 14th, Gene Sistare will be playing for us for our “Welcome Fall” dance.

Gene Sistare has played for us before and keeps the dance floor full. He is from

Lancaster, South Carolina. Gene has been involved with the Lancaster Shag Club

since 1993 and began doing DJ work in 1997. Since 2000 he has been a staff DJ at

the Beach Music Cafe and the Spanish Galleon Nightclub both in the Ocean Drive

Beach and Golf Resort. In addition he is a staff DJ at Fat Harold’s Beach club where

he plays each month and during SOS events. Gene is a lifetime member of the As-

sociation of Beach and Shag Club DJ’s and is also a member of the National Associ-

ation of Rhythm and Blues DJ’s, he has played for over 50 different Shag clubs over

the years. Gene is one of the DJ’s on the Embers Band “Making Waves” cruise.

“Fessa” John Hook will again be Master of Ceremonies at our Friday, October 28th

“Operation Uplink” Benefit at the Moose. ”Fessa” is one of 3 legendary DJs of Beach

Music: he, Charlie Brown and Ted Bell of radio station 94.9. John has been in-

volved in Beach Music since the early 1970’s. He is the author of Shagging in the

Carolinas which chronicles the history of Shag dancing and beach music. His latest

publication is the 2 volume set Beach Music Guide, 1945-2006 which contains ex-

tensive information on Beach Music artists and entries of over 26,000 beach music

songs. He now syndicates three radio shows weekly on 25+ radio stations across

the United States including 94.1FM from Wilmington. John has been affiliated with

numerous radio stations through the years in various capacities. His thorough

knowledge of beach music has rightly earned him his nickname of “Fessa.” His

continued presence at our “Operation Uplink” Benefit should make this an event to

be remembered.

There will be lots of opportunities to support “Operation Uplink.” There will be 4 DJs each offering a 4 hour

party. These are always excellent opportunities to have a good time. Other great auction items are the two

opportunities to go flying. Katy and I have been more them once and thoroughly enjoyed it. So, look for that

and so many other great things and bid on them to raise money to support our active duty service personnel

and our veterans.

With our Thanks giving dance approaching and remembering what a large turnout we had last year, we have

decided to hold this years’ dance, on Friday, November 11th at the Moose . The club will be cooking turkey for

the potluck. Bring your favorite Thanksgiving side dish. We hope to see you all on the dance floor.

Operation Uplink” Friday, October 28, 2016 (UPDATE)...

Greetings Fellow SOBS,

October 28th is fast approaching and the success of our annual fundraiser is up to you. Thank you to Bruce

Bauer, Beth Jones, John Umberto & Marilyn Hill, Patty Smith, Carol & Gary Goldenbaum, John Hutton, Joe

Malinowski, Diani & Rob Johnson and Dennis Faver for securing, or donating items for our event. We will

have 4 DJ parties up for winning this year along with Yeti gear, hats, Ale, decorative items, jewelry, golf,

plane rides and boat trips.

What else can we offer?? To date we are well below our past years’ offerings. If you have items to donate

please bring them with you, or let us know about them at the VFW dance on October 14th. If you are uncer-

tain of what we are seeking, just ask, no item is too small to support our efforts. Please contact us (see be-

low) if you have items to deliver or for us to pick up.

All profits from this event benefit the VFW’s Operation Uplink; providing internet and phone time to veter-

ans and active duty service people. When you attend the October 14th dance at the VFW, check out our past

years’ donation pictures framed at the doorway. We SOBS are proud to support our heroes.

Your 10 tickets will arrive soon via USPS. Both an entry ticket to the event and a door prize chance, these

are another way you can support the event. Tell your friends, bring them and your checkbook to the event.

Wear your dancing shoes, too, DJ “Fessa” Hook will keep the floor full. See you there!

Thanks for your support of this great event. Don’t hesitate to call either of us.
