Popular representations of the religions of Africa and the Middle East often rely on

generalizations and essentialist categories. But what are the actual manifestations

of religious life in these regions and what are the pedagogical tools available to us

in teaching them? Join us this summer as we consider the religions of Africa and

the Middle East in all their diversity, complexity, and historical specificity. In an

intensive five-day institute, leading scholars from across the country will offer

sessions exploring this topic from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

Participants will develop an appreciation for religious diversity, change over time,

and cultural embeddedness across the religious traditions of Africa and the Middle

East. The first four days of the institute will include interactive sessions with

scholars and curriculum development sessions, as well as a visit to Yale's regional

collections. The final day of the institute will feature a field trip.

Tuition for the program is $180. Space is limited.
