BUILDING CULTURE THROUGH EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Fostering a Positive Organisational Culture in Today’s University
Let’s talk about culture
Culture …
Word of the Year 2014
Culture is …
“A set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual,
and emotional features of society or a social
group, and that it encompasses, in addition to art
and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together,
value systems, traditions and beliefs.”
UNESCO, Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity
Culture is
A complex web - Stories
- Rituals and routines
- Symbols, objects, artefacts
- Organisational structure
- Control systems
- Power structure
Johnson and Scholes, 1992
Culture is …
What lies beneath
Schein, 1980
.
Culture is…
What you grow in
Culture is
a growing thing
Culture ..
Affects everyone
and is affected
by everyone
in an organisation
Culture ...
…represents a wish that a group of people might
discover, together, a good way of life;
that their good way of life might express itself in their
habits, institutions, and activities; and that those, in
turn, might help individuals flourish in their own way
The Meaning of Culture, 2014

Learnings from One DCU
-DCU Fuse Platform valuable as a flexible tool for engaging staff and
stakeholders across a range of issues.
-Not just about the technology: Successful implementation depended on strong
leadership from the Senior Management team along with collaboration of an inter-
disciplinary team that includes colleagues from Adapt, HR and ISS.
-One DCU has already had a positive impact on staff culture: Examples include
university-wide initiatives such as DCU’s partnership with Barrettstown along with
smaller initiatives such as a coffee and cake event that will be hosted by the
President’s Office next week.
A final word …
