Government• The system or institution

that controls a country.• El sistema o la institución

que controla un país. Se debe mantener el orden, prestación de servicios, seguridad y tomar decisiones económicas.

Purposes of Government• All governments

must:– Keep order– Keep people safe

(security)– Do things for the

people (provide services)

– Make decisions about needs (make economic decisions) Todos los gobiernos deben: mantener a la

gente de mantener de pedido seguro (seguridad) hacer cosas para el pueblo (servicios) hacen decisiones sobre necesidades (tomar decisiones económicas)

Democracy• A government where

the people have the power to make decisions.

• Two types: direct and indirect

• In America we use indirect (or representative) democracy Un gobierno donde las personas tienen el

poder de tomar decisiones. Dos tipos: directos e indirectos en América usamos la democracia indirecta (o representante)

Confederation• Government where power

is divided between the states and a national government.

• The states are stronger than the national government.

• Gobierno donde el poder está dividido entre los Estados y el Gobierno nacional. Los Estados son más fuertes que el Gobierno nacional.

Federalism• A government where the

power is divided between a national and state governments.

• The National government is stronger than (or supreme over) the states.

• Un gobierno donde el poder está dividido entre un gobierno nacional y estatal.

• El Gobierno nacional es más fuerte (o supremo sobre) los Estados.

Constitution

• Document that sets out the laws, principles organization and process of a government.

Legislative Branch• Branch of government

that makes laws• The United States

Congress (the House and Senate) is our legislature

Executive Branch

• Branch of government that carries out laws

• The President is the Chief Executive

Judicial Branch

• Branch of government that interprets (judges) what the laws mean.

• Led by the Supreme Court.

Currency

• Money• Governments have to

decide what to use and how much to use

Articles of Confederation• First American

constitution which created a loose alliance of 13 independent states.

• It was a weak government that failed.

• Primera Constitución estadounidense que creó una alianza de 13 Estados independientes. Fue un gobierno débil que no.

Depression• Period when business

activity slows, wages fall, and unemployment rises

• There was a depression during the time of the Articles of Confederation.

• Law setting up a system for settling the Ohio river Valley (Northwest Territory)

Northwest Ordinance• Law that set up a

government for the northwest territory, guaranteed basic rights, and made slavery illegal.

• Plan at the constitutional convention favored by larger states that called for a strong national government with three branches and a two chamber legislature.
