STARTING A BUSINESS, AVOIDING THE TRAPSPresented by the Office of the Small Business Commissioner for Victoria

The VSBC often receives applications from businesses in disputewith other businesses where the matter in dispute reflects lack ofawareness of commercial and legal realities. One of the VSBCfunctions is to assist in the prevention of disputes arising. Thisincludes informing aspiring or start up businesses about thethings to be aware of when entering contracts. This session willinform businesses of the role of the VSBC generally, and provideuseful tips to avoid businesses getting into business difficulty.

Geoff Browne is ideally suited for the role of Victoria’s SmallBusiness Commissioner. During an extensive career he has heldsenior roles in both the private and public sectors, has worked asa sole trader and also run a small incorporated business. He hasworked within the industry policy and program areas for theVictorian Government and led the Port Privatisation Unit. He alsoworked with the Commonwealth Prices Surveillance Authorityand led its inquiry into bank fees. In the private sector he hasworked extensively in the telecommunications, finance, andecommerce sectors.

Geoff was Deputy Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria for 6years, prior to his appointment as Small Business Commissioner.Geoff Browne holds a Masters Degree and First Class HonoursDegree in Economics and a Graduate Diploma in CompanySecretarial Practice.
