    Five by Seven

    Santa Monica

    January 3, 2016

At sundown Pike awoke, slapping the alarm to MUTE. He slept the days, mostly. Hestayed up all night, so it only made sense. The irony that he kept the same schedule as the

vampires he so hated was not lost on him, but he reflected groggily that sometimes you must

become what you hunt in order to kill it. Not that he ever wanted to be undead -- hed rather bejust plain dead -- but the more his life had turned around to resemble a vampires, the better ahunter he had become.

The bed was empty next to him. He could still smell Shelleys scent on the pill ow, if he

rolled over. She usually got up earlier than he, about five or six in the summer, and about three,three-thirty in the winter. Shelley liked the sun and wanted to see it every day, just to make sure

she was still human. Pike vaguely suspected she knew he liked her there in the morning, or theevening, rather, when he woke up; he liked to roll over and hold her, kiss her neck, cuddle with

her. Thats the real reason she gets up early, he suspected. Goes to bed after me and gets up

before Im awake. Subtle, Shell, subtle.

He sighed, running his hands through his short hair. Not that he could blame her, really.

She hadnt always been like this; when they were younger they continually embarrassed Rachelwith their romantic behavior. Every couple has a honeymoon phase, where they cant keep theirhands off of one another and they annoy everyone around them by being so openly, honestly in

love and smitten with one another. And ours lasted a lot longer than most peoples,Pike mused

as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. Hell, for years we were as close as a couple of teenagers. He started to sit up and still felt tired, so he lay back down. Damn Willow.

He shook his head. I take it back, he apologized. Its not Willow and Ozs fault they hadkids. Well, it is their fault, but... He shrugged. Not their fault it set Shelleys biological clock

alarm ringing. Pretty much from that moment, some five years ago, Shelley had wanted to have

kids, or at least one. Pike had smiled as hed watched Shelley at the hospital with Willow and

Oz, the way she had started crying when she held either of the two tiny little pink bundles. Hed

caught the look in her eyes, the way she had stared at him with such longing, and hed known, atthat instant. Its our turn. We gotta have one of these. She wont be any good without one. Pike

had had his doubts about bringing a child into the world they lived in, and wondered if theywould have to retire from vampire hunting. They had long talks about it, and considered it from

every angle. And he had to give her credit; as anxious as Shelley was to have morning sickness

and watch her belly grow to the size of a beach ball, she was beyond humanly patient with him,

exploring every angle, the ups, the downs, how they would take care of it, schools, everything. She had concerns of her own; but he had doubts, which were foreign to her on this issue. In the

end hed agreed not so much because he thought it was a good idea -- he still had his fears about

the danger in the world -- but because Shelley deep down at her core wanted it, and he could

never really deny her anything that she wanted that badly. Not like she ever asks me for anything

anyway. She didnt even then. And he knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that any child they

made together would capture his heart. He knew hed come around once he saw that tiny crying

infant that only they two could create.

They tried, and they tried. When their initial results failed, they tried positions, they tried

timing, they tried everything. He could sense Shelleys mounting frustration and did everythinghe could to assuage it. In almost every way outside the bedroom she seemed unaffected by their

baffling failure. He did notice she was unusually sharp with the vampires, and she had begun to

intensify her training. Pike figured she was merely working off her frustrations and all things

considered there were many worse ways she could choose to do that. Finally her doctor told her that she was fine, fit as ever and that her body was more than

ready to bear children. Pike, on the other hand, wasnt holding up his part of the bargain. Or,

rather, his sperm wasnt. At least the guy didnt actually say I was shooting blanks. He shook his

head, rolling over in the bed, wishing Shelley was there. Shed been heartbroken by the

prognosis, asked if there was any way a mistake had been made. But there wasnt, the doctors

were too thorough and the technology too sophisticated for them to have made an error. The nextweek had been the worst of his life. Every time he touched her she cried. Every time they talked

she would eventually just hug herself and stare off into space. For two people who didnt go towork and spent almost all of their waking moments together, the strain quickly grew tangible.

When hed spoken to her of adoption, Shelley had erupted, like hed known she would

eventually have to. She didnt want a baby, she wanted his baby. A child the two of them wouldconceive together, a tiny little human that would be a symbol of the love they shared for one

another and that they would raise together. Pike had tried to reason that an adopted baby could be

all those things, but Shelley wasnt buying any of it. In the end he had finally given up and askedher what she wanted to do, telling her that they had to dea l with this because he couldnt stand

being this distant, this strained, not when he loved her this much. And theyd stayed up all night

and most of the next day talking, and Shelley told him she didnt want to leave him, she didntwant anyone else in her life. She knew shed never love anybody else, and no matter what, she

was his and he hers, and it would always be that way. Pike had been relieved and for a while

things had gone back to as normal as they could be. Shelley was a little less enthusiastic in thebedroom, but Pike chalked that up to some very acceptable side effects of his failure.

It never happens all at once, like in the movies, he noted, staring at the ceiling. It just

slips away little by little, until you wake up one morning and whatever you have is gone. That

little magic, the way your pulse races when you know shes coming to see you, the little things

you do, she does, to make the other one happy, suddenly its gone and instead of a lover, apartner, you have a roommate you sleep with, like neither of you want to face the reality of

whats happening and so you deny the deeper stuff and just live out the mundane stuff, and hope

that something sets that spark going again. But nothing ever does.

Suddenly, surprising him, Shelley appeared in the doorway, wearing only her training bra

and a brief, tight pair of shorts. Her short hair was damp, and a sheen of sweat covered her firm, tan body, giving her a healthy glow. She was a little thinner than she used to be when she was

younger, but still pretty, still attractive. Still sexy, to him. Pike rolled over on one side and met

her eyes, those same luminous brown orbs that he used to be able to stare into for hours, that

would make everything else disappear for him. He thought he detected something in her eyes atthat moment, some flicker of interest, of desire, and he could feel his heart start to open up and

race full throttle, that maybe shed turned some corner and was ready to start building a life again

instead of just existing with him.

She raised a dark eyebrow. You ever gonna get out of bed? she wondered. Rileycalled. They need us in Sunnydale. She turned and walked away, heading for the bathroom.

Pike closed his eyes and let his head sink back into the pillow, exhaling.

    Sunnydale

    January 4

Riley had to push himself to keep up with Laura as she jogged. Normally they kept asteady pace together, and while fate had not seen fit to enhance his muscles, Riley had kepthimself in good shape over the years. At thirty-seven he was hardly old, and if anything his

excellent health and longer legs most often made him the perfect running partner for the

energetic young slayer. But not today. Laura was obviously annoyed by something, and making less effort as

time went on to hide it. They had been in town for three days now. Xander, despite the fact they

had essentially kidnapped him and forced him to take a leave of absence from his job, had

proven more or less cooperative. He had acted surly at first, but Riley had forgiven him that;wasnt every night a slayer and a commando hi-jacked your life, and on the whole of it Riley

thought Xander was handling things pretty well.Better than Laura, anyway.

His young charge, though normally collected, had begun to get grouchy the previous daywhen their search suddenly ran to ground. She, Riley and Xander had used the Eye in Los

Angeles; it had distinctly pointed south. Xander had jested that it would be all too ironic if the

Eye was actually directing them to Sunnydale, and Riley had agreed that was terribly unlikely.

So that afternoon they had hopped in Rileys rented SUV and headed off toward San Diego. Allof which seemed like a perfectly good plan until a few miles north of the Sunnydale exit, when

    the direction of the Eyes beam began to shift. As they neared the exit, there could be no doubt;

they were once again headed to Sunnydale. Riley didnt mind; the town had a built-in supportsystem with Rachel and her troop, and it was mostly familiar territory to him and Laura. He

thought it odd that an untrained slayer would find her own way to the Hellmouth, but, stranger

things have happened. Maybe the Hellmouth itself called her here.

Once they arrived in Sunnydale, however, after checking in with Rachel, the Eye hadsuddenly dimmed, and then the beam had vanished completely. Xander had explained to them

that he didnt know anything about it and he doubted that Faith had either. Laura had gotten

angry with him when he had remained possessive of the amulet, but Riley could understand. I

still have a necklace Buffy gave me, he remembered. Sometimes people get a hold of a piece ofyou and they never let go. Kind of surprising that Xander feels that about Faith, but

Woah, Riley spoke up. Slow down.Laura whirled on him, ponytail brushing her shoulders. Whats wrong?

He held up a hand, breathing heavy. Im not a slayer, he managed after a few gulps of

air. I cant keep this pace up much longer.

Laura set her hands on her hips. I didnt realize I was going that fast. Im sorry.

Its okay, Riley assured her, starting to catch his breath. Its just youve obviouslygot something on your mind. Why not tell me? It might make you feel better.

Laura folded her arms. You know perfectly well whats bothering me.

Riley looked at her. If I did, I wouldnt ask. Im a watcher, not a mind-reader. Heraised an eyebrow. Come on, open up.

How long are yall going to sit and wait? Laura growled. We picked up Xander three

days ago. Weve been here almost three days. And nothing! Okay, we know Sunnydale, but then

what? The thing just runs out of juice? I thought magic talismans werent supposed to do that!

    113

    They arent, Riley concurred.

So, sowhat, we just sit and wait until Rachel can figure it out? Laura took a step

toward him. She said it herself, shes no expert on this kind of stuff. It might take her months. She sighed. And that damn vampire Billy is no help, as usual.

Youre just being grouchy now, Riley told her. Billy used to be a pain in the ass, but

hes been on our side for a long time now. If he knew anything, he would tell us. He put a handon Lauras shoulder. Why do you think I sent for Pike and Shelley last night? Theyre the big

brains of the outfit, aside from Wesley. And he and Sam have been scouring the books too. Well

get to the bottom of it.

Laura held herself around her midsection. I just feel so useless, thats all, she admitted.I mean, Im not stupid, I know that, but next to some of these people, you know? She looked at

    Riley.

I know, he told her. I feel the same way. Ive been fighting these things for almost

twenty years, and still sometimes I feel like an oaf next to these folks. And Im not. I know moreabout field work than theyll ever even imagine. He squeezed Lauras shoulder. Everybody has

a purpose, everybody has a role. If we work together as a team, we use everyones strengths

where we can most benefit from them, then well be okay. Well do okay. He gestured tohimself. Why have the field guy do bookwork? Give him what he knows besta slayer. Thats

what I do. I train you. And you kill big nasty things. And were both good at what we do. He

exhaled. Were just not good at what they do, thats all. And you sorta have to accept that, kid.

I guess, Laura allowed, chewing on her lip. But once they do figure out why that thing

conked out, and they use it to find that other slayer She looked up at Riley. Then I wont

have a job. Then therell be this new slayer, and everyone will pay attention to her and forgetabout me. Im supposed to be the chosen one. Im supposed to be this big deal slayer. She took

a deep breath. Ive tried really hard to be good at this, Riley. To not disappoint you and the

others. Ive studied like you told me. I work out like you tell me. I do everything Im supposed to

do, the way Im supposed to do it, because I trust yall and I know yall are just tryin to helpme. She sighed. But once we find that new girl, you know, Im like yesterdays news. And

    whos gonna care then?

I will, Riley told her, moving close to her and giving her a hug. Ill always care about

you, Laura. Youll always be special to me no matter what. Youre my slayer. You cant believehow much that means to me, that I was given a slayer to train, and that she was as talented, as

conscientious, as you. He shook his head. There hasnt been a slayer anywhere near as good as

you since Buffy. And thats pretty good company. They parted, and he looked down at her. Ipromise you no one is going to forget you when we find this new girl. Youre probably gonna

have to help her, look out for her, anyway. Who do you think shes gonna look up to? A bunchof guys surrounded by a pile of books, or some kick-ass woman her own age who doesnt take

    crap from anyone?

Laura hugged him tightly, wordlessly, burying her face in his chest. She stayed like that

for a long moment, and then she stepped back. But she took his hands in hers and said, Thank

you. You always make me feel special, no matter what. She blinked. I cant tell you how

    grateful I am for that.

He smiled down at her. You are special. Dont forget that. No matter who else or what

else we find at the end of that little beam, once we get it working again, youre still theslayer.

    To his surprise, she stood up on her tiptoes and kissed him, her lips pressing against his;

she slid her arms around his waist and clutched him to her. Riley strained to pull away, but Laura

was stronger. She kissed him for quite some time, and Riley had to admit for a young woman

with little experience in this area, she was fairly good at it. At last they parted, and Riley brokethe embrace, moving back.

    Laura, I

She held up a hand. I know we cant. I know its forbidden. I read the books. She

sighed. I just wanted to kiss you, you know? Its not like I can help how I feel.He sighed. Laura, you cant

I do, she interrupted. I know, Im sixteen, Ill grow out of it. Its crazy. She looked

up at him thoughtfully. Is it any crazier than the fact that I hunt vampires? For that, Riley had no response.

*Shelley held Rachel tight as the two of them embraced in the foyer, smiling. Its been

too long, Shelley told her friend, and Rachel nodded in agreement.

Well, were busy, youre busy, you know how it is. But Im still glad to see you.

Rachel looked at Pike. Did you bring it?Pike nodded, holding up a backpack. We have it. The journal of Agrimatto. Same guy

who made that pendant youre trying to figure out.

We know, Pike, Shelley sniped. We were there the first time.

Not all of us, Billy put in. I dont remember any bleeding sot named Avocado.

Agrimatto, Akilah spoke up. The slayer-slayer. Or at least he wanted to be. She

looked at Pike and then Shelley. You guys helped kill him?

Well, it was mostlyBuffy and Angel, Shelley corrected her.

Xander stood up, stiffly. Actually, it was Giles and Faith who killed him. He fished out

the Eye from underneath his shirt and set it on the table. I was there. He gestured to the

pendant. You book types, youwant to take a look at that thing, there it is. Ill be outside.

    In the cold? Michael wondered.

Xander nodded. Its more comfortable out there. He exited out Rachels back door and

sat at the picnic table in her small yard.

Maybe I should go talkto him? Pike offered.

    Maybe you should, Shelley agreed.

Riley stood up. No, you two are both needed in here. He glanced at Laura. And you, I

want you to pay attention to what they do, okay? Learn from them?

She nodded. Okay. Though she tried to keep her face neutral, Riley could see the spark

in her eyes, and he wanted to get away from that.

He grabbed his jacket from the back of one of the kitchen chairs. If for any ungodly

reason you guys should need me, you know where Ill be. He closed the door behind him and

walked over to where Xander sat.

The younger man glared up at him. Why?

Do we have to go through that again? Riley replied.Xander gave him a dark look. I agreed to let you play your little games with that

necklace. I did not agree to sit in a room with fucking Spike, of all people, and some new little

slayer and Rachel and Pike and talk about the old times when Buffy was still around.

Riley sat down, clasping his hands on the table. I dont like talking about her either.

Xander shot him a disgusted look and shook his head.

    115

I dont, Riley reiterated. I loved her too, you know. Not like you, and not as long. And

I think she loved you a lot more and a lot better than she loved me. If she ever even really lovedme at all. He sighed. Mostly when I think about her I just get regrets. Buffys not my favoritesubject. He sat back from the table. But Ill be damned if Im gonna let her death be in vain.

Xander shook his head. Its all in vain. Dont you get it? Its all a waste of time, no

matter what. If Buffys death didnt prove that to you, than youre a bigger damned idiot than Ithought. He tapped the table. You fight vampires, you die. Its that simple. Maybe not on the

outside, though usually thats the way you go. But it kills who you are on the inside. You fight

them, you become them. No exceptions.

Im still human, Riley asserted. Im still normal.

If you call running around with a sixteen-year-old girl hunting vampires normal,

Xander allowed. He made eye contact with Riley. Buffy died, Riley. What the fuck is the point

of it any more? When I did it, I did it for her. Without her? He exhaled loudly. Who cares?

I care, Riley returned. That girl in there needs me. The people she protects need me . If

I can keep her alive an extra week, an extra month, then its all worth it. How many lives are

saved that way? A dozen? A hundred? I dont know. But Id rather have those lives lived than

taken by some evil vampire.Xander considered what the older man said. What about Pike and Shelley? he asked.

You cant say its been good for them.

I dont know what their story is, Riley admitted. I figure if they wanted me to know, they would share it with me.

Xander rolled his eyes. So long as whatever is eating them up doesnt get in the way of

    your little council job?

Something like that, Riley concurred. Both Pike and Shelley are members of the

council now. Not that theres many of us left. He looked at Xander. But at least they didnt

    give up.

Yeah, I gave up, Xander admitted. Gave up and got out when the gettin was good.He spread his hands on the table. I did my part. I killed Angelus. He closed his eyes. I killed

    Buffy.

Riley leaned forward, speaking low. You didnt kill her, Xander. You saved her life.

When the other man popped open his eyes, Riley continued, I read the reports on whathappened. I know what you did. And you were right. I would have done the same thing.

Xander gave him a crooked smirk. You didnt like him either.

I didnt know him, Riley corrected, and I didnt suffer through his attacks like youdid. But from where I sit, you did the right thing.

Like that got me ahead in life.

Riley sighed, slipping his hands in his pockets. You dont do whats right to get a

reward, Xander. You do whats right because its right. He chuckled. I know, Im just somehayseed from Iowa, what do I know?

Xander narrowed his eyes. If I didnt know better, and Im not sure I do, Id think youwere trying to recruit me.

You dont know better, Riley returned. I am.

    Youre crazy, Xander snorted.

And youre good with slayers, Riley reminded him. Buffy? No one was ever anybetter. Faith? You were a vital part of turning her around. Kendra? He paused.Do I need to go

    on?

    116

Xander shook his head in disbelief. What do you want?

Pike and Shelley cant even deal with each other. You think I want to turn them loose on

some scared teenager who doesnt know what shes doing? He nodded no. Rachel Rachelsbeen a big help to the cause, but I dont know that shes the best point man for a job like this.

Xanders eyebrows shot up. You want me towhat, go find this girl?

No, Riley told him, we find her as a group. You just talk to her first. Why me? Xander wondered, incredulous. What could possibly possess you to think

Im even remotely the right person for that job?

You have a way with slayers, Riley reminded him. Second of all, if you can convinceher to listen to us, skeptical as you are, then we stand a chance with her.

Xander threw up his hands. I dont believe this.

Its your little pendant, Riley pointed out.

That doesnt make it my responsibility, Xander argued.

Riley folded his arms. Maybe it does. Maybe thats why Faith gave it to you. So you

could find the girl whos supposed to take her place, finish the job she started.

Xander smiled. Youre giving Faith too much credit.

Riley shook his head. Im not so sure thats the case. Maybe she knew exactly what shewas doing.

That would have been a first, Xander tossed off.

    Nobodys perfect, Riley agreed.

*Pike sat back on the couch and rubbed his eyes, stifling a yawn.

    You okay? Michael asked him.

Pike nodded. I just need a break. Im not usually up during the day.Shelley continued to pore over the journal of Alaric, reading from the front section,

which had been written in Armenian. Its not like youre missing anything, she offered. So far

he hasnt said anything about the Eye at all.

Rachel brought in a pitcher of iced tea on a tray and set it on the only open space on the

crowded coffee table. She sat on the floor next to Akilah and inquired of her friend, Any luck?

Nothing in here, Akilah sighed, closing a massive leather-bound tome and setting it in a

pile of books she had glanced through. There wasnt anything on the computer?

Nada, Rachel supplied. Nobodys even heard of this thing.

I could check in with Wesley again, Pike offered.

If he had discovered anything, he would have called, Shelley pointed out.Pike closed his eyes, trying not to sigh.

What about boy wonder out there? Billy questioned, jutting a thumb toward the backyard. Hes had his hands on the damn thing for what, ten years? Twelve? Doesnt he kn ow

    anything about it?

No, Riley informed them. Hes never used it. He didnt even know how until Lauraand I told him.

Figures, Billy put in. He leaned forward and examined the Eye again, shaking his head.

Someone went to a lot of work on this thing. Right nice craftsmanship. He picked it up,examining it closer. How does it work?

You say, Reveal slayer, and it does, Laura told him.

Giles had it, Pike explained. I have everything he had in his library.

    Everything? Billy questioned.

    Pike nodded. Sure. Why?

Billy shook his head. Nothing. I just He stopped, looking down at the floor. Im just

glad all his things got put to good use.

So, anyway, Michael spoke, that leaves us with, well, who else who knew about thisEye pendant?

Buffy knew about it, Xander offered from the kitchendoorway. But I think we can

rule her out as a suspect, now, cant we?

Rachel turned to face him. Anyone else you can remember?

Angel, Xander responded tonelessly. Same problem as Buffy.

    The room fell silent.

    What about Willow? Riley asked.

*Tell me more, Kasinda urged the vampire who stood behind her.The vampire was particularly small and particularly ugly. A long dark scar ran down his

left cheek, clefting his lip and displaying one of his long incisors on a permanent basis. Sheshere, he rasped. The slayer. Shes definitely here.

Kasinda turned, golden-brown eyes narrow. You are sure?

I would bet my life on it, the vampire returned.

Kasinda tilted one corner of her mouth up. You may yet, she responded, slipping on apair of eyephones and speaking a number softly. The yellow glow around the border of the

lenses bespoke of someone on the other end of the connection, but who, or what, the scarred

vampire could only guess. Kasinda had put word out of the street in the greater southernCalifornia area. Most vampires knew to stay away from Sunnydale; a crack team worked the

Hellmouth, with the rumor going they had recruited a vampire to help them. But there was

something else, some presence, as if it was just a poor idea to be here.Like the ghost of some old

slayer stalking about, ready to turn us all into ash.But he, Victor, had overcome his fear. Kasinda offered too much money for him to be

afraid, and he alone of the small gang in San Diego had migrated north to Sunnydale to seek the

information Kasinda desired. She wanted to know where the slayer was, and she had reason tosuspect the girl was somewhere between San Francisco and Mexico. That left a hell of a lot of

land to cover, but Victor had tried Sunnydale first and he had not been disappointed. Late last

night he had spotted her, luckily for him from a distance, and she had been hunting with a humanmale, a big one. Victor had called the number Kasinda had provided, and, well, now here he

stood in front of one of the sexiest women, alive or not, that he had ever seen.

Kasinda addressed him. You are absolutely certain you saw her in Sunnydale?

    Victor nodded. Yes, maam.

Kasinda folded her arms. Describe her.

Victor licked his bottom lip. I didnt get too close, mind you. She is a slayer and I have

no business tanglin with one of those. But she was about my height, maybe an inch or two more, with long curly blonde hair. And she was with some fella about six three, maybe. They were

    workin together.

    10/32

    119

It couldbe them, Kasinda allowed, speaking into the eyephones. That matches the

description we were working on in Pasadena the other day.Kasinda went quiet for a moment, listening to whomever was on the other end of the

    phone.

How do you know it was the slayer? Kasinda inquired.

Victor frowned. I saw her take out two vampires all by her lonesome. The big guy didnteven help her. Now, when I see some young thing do that, I gotta think she has some kind of

power. Girl, killin vampires without help it aint exactly a huge logical leap.

Kasinda nodded, holding up a gloved hand to motion for quiet. She nodded in agreement

with the voice on her eyephones and said, At once. The yellow edges dimmed, and shewithdrew the phones and folded them up in the breast pocket of her blazer.

Youre no doubt looking for your reward now, she spoke to Victor.

Yes, maam, if its convenient. He nodded to emphasize his eagerness.

Kasinda gestured behind him. Right this way, she instructed him, and Victor turned to

see a silver metallic suitcase sitting atop an old wooden table.

Ten thousand? he sought to conform, his voice low with excitement.

Kasinda nodded. Thats right. Its all there. But you can count it if you want. She cameup behind him, leather-clad fingers resting on his shoulder.

No need, Victor spoke cheerily. I trust you.

Thats because youre an idiot, Kasinda growled, withdrawing a stake from inside hersuit jacket and impaling Victor, turning him to dust. She withdrew her eyephones from her

pocket and donned them, dialing another number.

    Maleena, she murmured.

The other womans voice answered her.

The slayer is in town. Find her tonight. Capture her and kill her companions.

The Immortals will not fail you, Maleena promised.

Kasinda smiled. See that they dont.

*Thanks for getting me out of there, Xander told Rachel, who started up her old van and

    pulled out of the driveway.

No sweat, she responded. I could see you werent real comfortable, and Im gonnaneed help carrying the bags anyway. She drove down the street, pausing briefly at a stop sign, and continued on. They sat in silence for a few blocks until Rachel was forced to stop for a red

light. Then she turned to Xander and said, Why now?He gave her a blank look. Why now what?

She scowled at him. Youve been gone for years. You practically disappeared off theface of the earth. So why come back now?

Xander shook his head. Oh yeah. Like this was my idea. Like I wanted to have anythingto do with slayers and vampires and all that shit after

Rachel hit the gas as the light turned green; she glanced at him, waiting for him to

continue, but Xander had fallen silent. Okay, so they talked you into it. Still, why now?

He shrugged. Ask Riley. And super-slayer in there, you know, the one who makes the

    googly eyes at him.

She does not, Rachel dismissed him.

She does too. Xander glanced at her. Take it from someone who knows what slayer

googly eyes looked like. They drove on in silence a while more. At last Rachel spoke, You almost killed her, you

    know.

Xander closed his eyes. I know. But so did Angel. He looked at Rachel. At least she

survived what I had to do. She wouldntve made it past him.She didnt really, Rachel responded, her eyes concentrating on her driving. She was

never the same after that. I wasnt with her long, but She sighed. It was like she was broken,

like she was dead inside. I tried to cheer her up, but

Nobodys more sorry than me, Xander murmured.

Rachel looked at him. I think so. I think youre right about that. But we all miss her.

Xander nodded in agreement. So do I.They went quiet for the rest of the ride, until Rachel pulled into a little strip mall with a

Trader Joes and a pool store and a Chinese restaurant, Mr. Wus. You still havent told mewhy.

Why what? Xander wondered as they exited the van.

Why now, Rachel repeated.Xander stopped. They came to me. They wanted the Eye. None of this was my idea.

So why didnt you give it tothem? Rachel questioned as they resumed walking.

    Its mine, Xander replied simply.

Rachel led him into Mr. Wus. They would have given it back. You know that.

Xander remained silent as Rachel greeted Mr. Wu himself, and then proceeded to orderenough food for a football team. Mr. Wu as usual waved a gnarled yellow hand when she tried to

pay him, and he told her it would be about ten minutes to fill her order. He offered her and

Xandersome piping hot green tea, which to Xanders surprise turned out to be excellent.

He turned to Rachel. Thats not the point.

What is the point, then? she asked, blowing on her tea.

Its not theirs to use. Its mine.

You left it on the table all day today, Rachel pointed out.

I was six feet away, he responded. Where was it going?

Six feet, six hundred miles, whats the difference? she sipped on her tea. You eithertrust Riley or you dont. She gave him a long look. And you do.

What makes you say that? he challenged.

Because you know him. Rileys the most trustworthy guy in the whole world. I can seeyou not puttin a lotta stock in Laura hell, I can see you not trustin any slayer ever again, thats

    cool. But Riley? Nope.

We were never that close, Xander argued.

He insisted on going to see you after Buffy died, to tell you, she related. I volunteered,Pike volunteered. Riley said no, it was his job, he would do it. She shook her head. So it aint

    him. So?

Faith gave that to me, Xander explained. It means something to me. I dont want to letit go.

Rachel nodded. Okay. So you came with them because?

Well, I sure as hell wasnt going to give them the damn thing. Like I said, its mine.

Rachel raised an eyebrow. You could have just said no.

    Xander had nothing to say.

Rachel leaned forward. They needed you, she told him. You came with them because

they needed you. We all need you.

Yeah, I know, I have the little magic trinket that will find the slayer. Yay me.

Rachel curled one hand into a fist to avoid hitting him. No, you big dumb ass, we need

you. The council. All of us. She shook her head. Dont you get it? You bring something to the

group that no one else has. She slipped her hair behind her ear with her free hand. I dont knowexactly what it is, but I do know, without you, we arent gonna get the job done.

    Xander pffted. Thats crap.

Its not crap, Rachel corrected him as their order came up, Mr. Wu stacking four large

paper bags on the counter. Riley and Wesley have been looking for this other slayer for a while

now, since before Chelsea, trying to figure out where the hell she could be. She thanked Mr.

Wu and grabbed two of the bags, pausing while Xander snapped up the other two. And in the

last three days, weve come closer than we have in the last three years.

So? he inquired as they headed out the door.

So, I ask myself whats different, she replied as she unlocked the vans door. And the

only answer I get is you.

He set the bags behind the front seat, on the floor, and hopped in. So what are yousaying here?

Rachel fished out her keys. You came here, she spoke, because you were supposed to

come here. Because we needed you.

    For what? he asked.

Rachel turned to look at him. I dont really know. I just know and I mean knowthat

we are not gonna win this thing without you, so dont get big ideas about going anywhere.

Oh no, little missy, Xander told her. As soon as you guys are done with that little

    pendant, Im outta here.

No youre not, Rachel told him.

How are you gonna stop me? he asked.

Im not, Rachel replied. I wont have to. She gave him a half-smile. If youre

supposed to be here, theres nothing I could say that could keep you or chase you away. Youll

find your own reason to stay.Xander gave her a dark scowl as she took off out of the parking lot, but he found he had

    no reply.

*Shelley had headed off for a nap after dinner, using Rachels bed. Pike dozed on the

couch, dropping in and out of the post-dinner conversation. Michael had helped Rachel clear all

of the detritus from the food away, and Billy sat licking his fingers; theyd been kind enough toget ribs again, and he had socked them away almost immediately. Riley and Xander communed

in low tones in Rachels tiny den, and Laura found herself watching Billy with curiosity, wondering what drove a vampireeven one with a soulto help them out so fervently.

Willow had taken their call earlier and had promised them she would look into the Eye.

She had also informed Pike and Shelley their translation services would be needed, as she hadindeed acquired the Atlantean tome of Briareus. She informed them that normally she would

come straight there, but shed been away for a few days and wanted to see her children and

husband again before she went anywhere. Rachel understood on an intellectual level but

remained disappointed. She told Willow to call her before she left.

Billy glanced over at the slayer and caught her watching him. What?

Nothing, Laura assured him, looking away.

Billys dark eyes narrowed. You were watching me, he hissed.

Laura remained silent, inspecting her boots. Its been a long time since I worked with a slayer, Billy told her. I hated em my

whole bleedin life, and then along comes Buffy Summers, how do you please. Kicked my ass,

and good. Not once, mind you, but several times. He shook his head. Dru said I had to be daft

to keep going after her, and I guess I was. But whats a man if he doesnt pit himself against thetoughest opponent he can, eh? Anyone can take down a punter. Takes a real man to tackle his

nemesis, and thats what I was, or what I fancied myself, anyway. He turned to face her. Do

you know how close I came to that? How bloody close I came to doin what no other vampirecould do? Not even Angelus himself could beat Buffy in combat. And we came so close. Hesighed.

You were a monster, Laura seethed at him.

He gave her a long look. Her brown eyes were narrowed, and anger and hatred fought fordominance on her face. Her teeth were clenched and she gave him thatlook, the one he hadnt

seen in a long time, the look that clearly said, Give me a good reason why I shouldnt kill you.

Billy pointed at her. Thats it, he spoke, his finger moving back and forth slightly.Thats exactly the kind of look she used to give me. He raised an eyebrow. Youre a lot like

her, you know, Kane. And youre right, I was a monster. Nobody knows that better than me.

Which is why I spend my time tryin to make it up to you lot. He sat back in the chair. I sposein the end youll all die, and Ill be all alone, and then it wont matter what I do with my life.

Nobody there to care anyway. He looked back at her. But until then, Im stuck with you lot,

and there are worse places to be, I guess. He winked atLaura. Youre the first one thats had

the balls to work with me, slayer. I like that about you.

Laura remained quiet, though her look softened a little bit.

Billy continued, Look, Ive fought a lot of slayers, good ones and bad. And Ive gone up

against the best, I can bet you that. He tapped his temple. Ive got a lot of knowledge in here a

girl like you could use. Youre smart, youre quick, and youve got fire. He glanced back andforth. And Ill tell you somethin else, Kane. You got all these people hopin again. You. They

had all pretty much given up on this whole thing, you know, this bloody war. Goin through the

motions and all that. But now, theyre movin with a purpose again. Have ever since you cameon the scene. So be smart. He leaned in closer. I know youre gettin your trainin from soldier

boy, and Ill never be on his dinner invite list. But I can help you too, if you let me. Ive got a lot

of experience I can pass on.

Laura glared up at him. Why would you want to help me?

Billy ticked off fingers. One, I like you. Youve got spirit. Id rather see you alive than

dead, and if I can teach you something thatll keep you that way, so much the better. Two, the

Kings headed this way. Its just a matter of time until youll have to fight him, and with my help

youll be better prepared. Three, like I said, you get this lot all fired up. I like that. And four

    He trailed off.

Laura raised an eyebrow. Four? she prompted.

Billy frowned. Ah, hell. Four is, you remind me of Summers. He looked away. I liked

Summers. Respected her, you know. When I wasnt busy hatin her. She couldve just staked me

when I came back to her with a soul, but she didnt. She took me in, let me stay in her town, even

hunted with me for a while. He made eye contact with Laura. I miss her, you know, in my own

way. So me helpin you, thatd be my way of makin up to her, a little, you know. To saythanks.

Ill have to run it by Riley, Laura told him.

Run what? Riley asked, entering the living room with Xander.Bloody hell, Billy groused.

Laura stood up. Billy wants to help train me.

    Riley folded his arms. Why?

Billy stood up, a few inches shorter than the watcher. Because if I dont, the Kingsgonna come get her, thats why. With my help, shell stand a chance against him.

Riley glanced at Laura and then back at Billy. You okay with this, Laura?

She turned to look at Billy. The vampire was struck by the girls beauty, but even deeperthan that he could see, he could almost feel, how badly this young woman wanted to excel at her

job. It was no game to her; Laura, though young, understood the world she lived in and the risks

she took. Billy could sense it very clearly, and felt himself hoping she would agree to it. We

dont do it with this girl, we will not get another chance. Not in their lifetimes, anyway. Maybe inmine.

Im okay with it if you are, she told Riley.

Riley nodded. Okay. Starting tomorrow, Billy, whenever were in Sunnydale, you helptrain her. He rubbed his chin.We should probably talk about whatever you want to cover first,

    though.

Sounds good to me, Billy told him.

At that moment, Michael and Rachel came in from the kitchen. What sounds good to

    you? Rachel wondered.

Xander looked over at her. Rileys gonna let dead boy here help train Laura.

Billy put his hands on his hips. Would you not call me that?

*Pike lay flat out on the couch, snoring lightly, and Shelley lay in the bedroom, no doubt

doing the same. Rachel found it disturbing that the two of them napped separately rather than

together, but then they had been after each other all afternoon, Shelley usually the instigator andPike most often backing down.I dont like it and I dont like being in the middle of it. But since Idont know what its about, I cant do much about it.

Rachel, Michael asked softly, breaking her reverie, and she turned to face him as shedimmed the light in the living room. In the soft amber glow of the faded light, Rachel noticed

that Michael looked more than a little handsome. She shook her head to clear that thought.

    Hmm?

Michael paused, staring at her in the soft light. I was thinking we should kick everyone

out and just spend the night making out, he thought, noting how her brown eyes seemed huge in

the near-dark. But he said only, Maybe we should patrol tonight all of us. Give Pike and

Shelley a break, time to rest. Theyll sleep better in a quiet house.

Rachel bit her bottom lip in thought. Im not sure I want to leave them alone. Theyvebeen bickering all day.

I know, Michael concurred. But Im thinking maybe they just need to be alone. I dont

know, maybe a change of scenery will get them to come around. He smiled shyly. And its not

every day we get to patrol with the slayer.

Rachel raised an eyebrow, but accompanied it with a half smile. Somethin I should

know about you and Laura? she teased him.

Michael chuckled. Shes a little young for me. I generally prefer older women.Rachel blinked. I wonder what he means by that, exactly, she thought, but before she

could ask him, Billy crept up to the two of them, making an obvious effort to be quiet. We

gonna take our nightly look at the Hellmouth or what? he wondered. Its been dark for over an

    hour.

Rachel looked at him. Michael was just asking me the same thing.

Whats that? Riley asked as he and Laura joined them.

    Patrol, Rachel supplied.

Good idea, Riley concurred. If you dont mind, Id like Laura to do a circuit withBilly. He wants to help her, I say, no better time than the present.

Right, Billy nodded, looking at Laura. Im up for it if the slayer is.

Count me in, Laura replied. She glanced at Riley and then returned her attention toBilly.

Billy usually patrols with Rachel, Michael provided. But since were mixing up

partners anyway, how about if I go with Rachel and you go with Akilah? he suggested to Riley.

Rachel looked at him, and then at Riley, mildly surprised that her normal role as leader of

    the gang had been usurped.

Works for me, Riley agreed. Rachel, sound good?

Im glad somebody asked me, she sniped. Sure, Im game. Im gonna go get changed.

    Let Akilah know, okay?

Akilah emerged from the bathroom. Let me know what?

Youll be patrolling with Riley tonight, Rachel informed her as she headed upstairs.

Akilah looked up at the tall watcher. Cool. You mind if I pick your brain about the

    council?

Riley shook his head. Not at all.

Xander approached them, a mug of coffee in his hands. From the look of this pow -wow

at this time of the evening, Id say you guys are talking about sharpening your stakes and going

out looking for a few vamps to turn to ash. Correct me if Im wrong.

Youre not, Laura informed him. Wanna come along?

Xander sipped on his coffee. Not on your precious little life.

Weve got our cozy little teams anyway, Billy pointed out. Hed just make one of our

    companies a crowd.

Which is exactly why hes staying in here, Xander responded. Keeping watch over thesleeping fellow Angelenos.

Yousure? Riley prodded. We could use you out there.

For what? Xander questioned. We just ate dinner. You wont need somebody to go ona snack run.

Riley made a face but let it drop. Fine, enjoy yourself here.

Thats the plan, Xander agreed, seating himself in the rocker.

Riley shook his head. So, patrols. Who goes where?

    125

Billy usually has a routine he likes, places he checks, Akilah spoke up. Be a good way

for Laura to get to know Sunnydale a little better. Michael and I usually take the west side of

town, but I think Ill let him and Rachel take that tonight. She glanced at Riley. How bout wetake the south side?

Still the seedy part of town? Riley wondered.

Akilah shrugged. Some things dont change.Okay then, Riley said. Lets get cracking.

Ill wait for Rachel, Michael offered. You guys go ahead.

Riley and Laura moved for their duffel bags in the front hall. Akilah and Billy headedinto the den and returned with stakes, holy water, and the other paraphernalia they used on a

regular basis. The four of them nodded to Michael and headed out the door.

Michael turned to Xander when they had left. You really should come with us.

Xander gave him a false smile. I really shouldnt.

Look, I dont know what happened to you, but

No, you dont, Xander agreed. You have no goddamn idea at all. You wanna play

hero, fine, go out there and impress Rachel all you like. Me, I quit. Theres nobody on this earth

who could drag me out there to fight vampires ever again.Michael took a deep breath. How can you turn your back on it? You know theres real

evil out there, and you know how to stop it. How can you let it just feast on the innocent?

Xander gave him a crooked grin. Nobodys innocent, kid.

Its rarer than it should be, Michael admitted, but if I can stop some vampire from

ruining some kids life, or taking it, I will.

For now, Xander told him. Wait until you lose whatever it is that drives you. Waituntil you lose the one thing that means more than anything in the world to you. He shook his

head. Suddenly vampires wont seem like such a big deal then. Xander looked up at him, met

his eyes. If theres anything or anyone you love in this world, kid, hang onto it. Because sooneror later someone or something will take it away. So hang onto it and protect it as long as you

    can.

Rachel came down the stairs. Ready? she asked Michael.

*You wanted to know about the council? Riley asked, his voice low, as he and Akilah

made their way past a row of darkened warehouses. He remembered this neighborhood from his

Initiative days, when more than a fair share of demons and monsters had called this area home.

The years had done nothing to improve the surroundings, though Akilah had informed him there

werent many monsters left dwelling here anymore.

Yup, she returned, peering through a window at a deserted interior to what might haveonce been a corner deli. I wanna know what it takes to join.

You wanna work for the council? Riley clarified.

Maybe, Akilah responded. When I know more about it, yeah. I mean, I know youguys hunt vampires and train slayers and all, but what else do you do? Does that take up all your

    time?

Right now it does, Riley admitted. There used to be hundreds of people workin g for

the Watchers Council. They had operatives all over the world, field people, researchers. For a

while there they even had their own branch of agents who hunted monsters. But that all changed

about eight years ago. He glanced around, making sure theywerent being followed, and the

two of them headed up a dark alley. Now theres only a handful of us left, probably no more

    than a dozen or so.

What happened? Akilah inquired as they hopped the fence at the end of the alley.

The watchers used to have this big annual meeting, get everybody together, or everyone

they could, anyway. Theyd gather in London and the head of the council would give them a peptalk and then remind them of their goals and get everybody on the same page. It was mostly for

morale, because you know how hard this job can be. Just to sort of remind everyone that hey,

you arent in this alone, we know its hard work, but if we work together we can persevere, and

all of that. Riley led her around a huge pile of tires into the backentrance of a junkyard half-

filled with the rusting hulks of older cars. It was usually a great time for everybody, and they all

came away renewed and ready to fight evil again.

Akilah nodded as they poked around the junkyard. Go on.

Well, eight years ago was the first year that a guy named Quentin Travers took over

command of the council. He wanted to make a splash. The guy before him some old English

guy named James had been in the big seat forever, so Travers wanted to impress upon

everyone that he had the goods, you know, that things would run as good or better than they hadbefore. So he gathers everyoneand I mean everyonewho can possibly make it and he brings

them all to London for the biggest, most important pow-wow yet."

Were you there? Akilah asked as they exited the front of the junkyard, having foundnothing. She gestured to a run-down park up the street, and Riley nodded in agreement.

Nope. I wasnt working for the council yet. He stopped for a moment, listening, butdecided he had heard nothing, and they kept moving. I was still with the Army at that point. Ididnt join the council until a few months later, after well, after they got ambushed.

    By who? Akilah wondered.

Riley shrugged as they entered the dilapidated park. A huge swath of dirt ran diagonallythrough it, obviously a short cut from where they stood to something across the far side of the

place, though Riley couldnt see anything. Two small concrete trestles stood near the entrance,

once a park bench, but now all the wood had been stripped away. A cracked water fountain

leaned to one side nearby. They never really knew, Riley answered her as they started through

the park. Someone sealed the hall up from outside, and they set it on fire. When people started

jumping out the lower floor windows, they found themselves face to face with a bunch of armed

thugs. He sighed. Most of them burned to death, and the rest were shot. They even managed toget inside and make sure everything was destroyed all the computers, all the records,

    everything. Nothing survived the attack.

Nothing? Akilah echoed as they exited the park and came upon a burned-out shell of abuilding.

Nothing. No records, no weapons, nothing. He stopped. Well, one thing. WesleyWyndham-Pryce made it out. But he was the only one. Good thing Sam Zabuto was with me in

the Andes hunting demons at the time, or hedve been killed too. Riley took a few steps forward,

frowning. Over two hundred people in that building, and he was the only one that got out.Howd he manage that? Akilah inquired.

Riley moved up next to the building, examining the charred detritus. The way he tells it,he played dead along with a bunch of real corpses. Then he waited until one of the armed goons

came in, he overpowered the guy, stole his uniform and helmet, and took his place. Riley shook

his head. He infiltrated whoever took out the place, and he had to watch while the rest of the

  • 7/31/2019 Buffy: King of the Dark Chapter 5

    18/32

    127

survivors were rounded up and slain. Riley checked the outside of the building for identifying

marks. He finally made his way away from there when they were pulling out. They totallygutted the place, destroying everything, and then they burned the bodies in a big pyre. The had to

leave because the police were coming, but they did a pretty thorough job. Riley took a few steps

back. Whoever did it knew the watchers really well. Knew the building, knew where the

weapons were, knew the layout, everything. He looked at Akilah. Wesley never wants to admitit, but it almost had to be an inside job.

Someone on the council? Akilah questioned.

Riley shrugged. Its the only answer that makes sense. The attack was too well

coordinated. He gestured up at the building. Why does this place seem so familiar?

Akilah squinted in the darkness. Used to be some kind of bar, I think. Billy told me

about this place once, when we patrolled here looking for a band of Fyral demons a year ago. Hesaid it used to be this place where vamps and demons used to hang out, that it was like a safe

house where they could go and not be bothered. And

This was Willys, Riley realized. The Alibi Room. He chuckled. Wonder what the

    hell happened to it?

Akilah scratched at her neck. Billy told me that, too. He burned it down.Riley smiled. Good man, that Billy.

*Billy led Laura up a long, sloping hillside. Though the crown of the hill was only barely

noticeable even in the day, both vampire and slayer could feel the slight rise in the ground as

    they moved forward.

I know where we are, Laura realized.

Billy nodded. Thats good. That means you can feel it. He glanced at her. My kind can

feel it too. It calls out to us all the time.

Even though you have a soul? Laura wondered.

Billy shrugged. Even though I have a soul, he concurred. That doesnt mean anything

to the old evil eye over there. He pointed to the slightly bald hump that stood no higher than a

pitchers mound some thirty feet from them. Day and night the bleedin bugger is alwayscalling, always in the background, like a telly turned on just low enough so you can hear the

buzzin but not what anyones sayin. He stuffed his hands in the pockets of his duster. Coulddrive some folks mad.

If it calls out to evil, then how come I can feel it? she wondered as they approached the

    ugly lump of dirt.

Cause youre tied into all of this, some way. Youre the slayer. Youve got to fight evil, and that means, sometimes, you have to think like evil, you have to act like evil.

If I do that, I lose who I am, Laura countered.

Billy regarded her. Maybe, he admitted. And maybe thats what you have to do to

become this great super slayer everyones lookin for. He moved to the hump of dirt and strode

atop it. This King, hes a big bad. Even I stayed away from him when I was too. Im not proud

to admit that, but there it is. Billy kicked at the dirt with his boot. You know he wants this little

    hole open, dont you?

Why would anyone want to open the Hellmouth? Laura inquired.

For kicks, Billy responded. Take over the world, make some pact with some big

demon down below. Who knows? He stepped off the mound. Me, I was never an apocalypsekind of guy. Yeah, I wanted this bloke dead, or that bird turnedand I had my share of run-ins

with your predecessors but I never wanted to end the world. Seems bloody stupid if you ask

me. He looked at Laura. I like the world just the way it is, thank you.

Laura digested that. Fine. But why would the King want to open the Hellmouth, specifically?

I dont know him that well, Billy disclosed, or maybe I could answer that. Could be he

doesnt. Could be whatever he thinks hes got coming to him he can get right here on earth. Thevampire looked up at the sky for a moment. But I guarantee you, slayer, whatever is going to godown, its most likely gonna go down here. Me and the others aint been sittin on this rock for

years for nothin, you know. It aint been quiet here by accident. He spread his arms. Hell,

without us, who knows what would have come crawling through that blasted hole?

    Laura remained silent.

All Im sayin is, girl, you just watch and

From nowhere, an arrow thunked home in Billys knee, and he sank down, swearing.

Get down! he hissed as two more arrows whistled by.Archers? Laura growled, hitting the dirt. She could feel the Hellmouth pulse beneath

her palms, as if those below could sense her on the other side of the dimensional portal. She letout a startled gasp.

Bloody Kings men, Billy swore, pulling out the arrow. Weve got to get moving, girl.

Were sittin ducks out here with no cover. He moved to a crouch and grabbed her, with fullintent to make haste across the field. But an arrow pierced his side, and another one grazed his

scalp. Billy staggered a few feet and dropped, swearing.

We cant stay here, Laura told him.

Tell me somethin I dont bleedin know. Billy pressed the tiny button on the earphone

he always wore on patrol. Rachel? Michael? Anybody?

    Billy? Akilah responded first.

Slayer and I are in a spot at the Hellmouth. All you lot better get here quick. Them

damned archers have us pinned down good.

Well be right there, Akilah assured him, breaking the connection.

Riley and I fought an archer in Pasadena a few days ago. A vampire. Wore green robes,

    and

So do these buggers, Id wager, Billy told her. Theyre from the bloody King. Heglanced around. Filthy ponce couldnt come here and do the job himself.

An arrow thudded home near his hand, and Billy jerked it away as if he had been bitten.

Hurry up, Riley, Laura urged him silently.

*Shes supposed to be west of us, Rachel spoke, staring at the horizon. A few hills, some

trees, and a large home or two was all that stood between her and the ocean.

Itd be nice to find her, Michael concurred. But if she has a spell on her that can

confuse the Eye, maybe theres more to her than we know.

Rachel nodded, looking over at him. Ive been thinking about that too, she told him.

And I can only come to two conclusions. One, shes friends with someone who knows a lot of

magic and is trying to protect her.

Michael checked both ways before they crossed the street, heading generally toward the

water. Thats the good option, Im guessing.

Yup. Rachel stepped up on the curb and started down the gentle hill. Other option is,someone hostile to us got to her first and is hiding her for his own purposes.

Michael followed her. Then why not just kill her?Anyone hostile to us cant have the

    slayers best interests at heart.

Rachel frowned as they found themselves on a private driveway. Thats what I thoughttoo, she replied, lowering her voice. Maybe they have some plan that calls for a live slayer. I

dunno. She led Michael down the driveway and out onto the street beyond it. But then why allthis stuff with the archers attacking us, and the battle in Boston, and all of that, if all they want is

the slayer, and they already have her?

So you thinksomeone is hiding her from us to protect her, Michael suggested.

Bingo, Rachel agreed. You catch on quick, Mike.

He smiled behind her back. I had a good teacher, he spoke.Rachel turned to consider him. Something occurred to me, she told him.

Hmm? he wondered as they made their way down the street.

Youve been switching patrol partners a lot lately. She looked at him. Somethingwrong between Akilah and you?

He shook his head. No. Were getting along fine. Like always.Rachel furrowed her brow. You could tell me, you know, if you guys had a

disagreement, or something. We arent always gonna be pals, even though we have to work

together. She looked over at him. I mean, I could talk to her, you know, if you wanted, and

Theres nothing, Rachel, really. I would tell you if there were. But Akilah and I are

getting along just fine. He studied her. You would have noticed something, right?

I thought I did, Rachel grumped. She turned them toward the water as they came to the

top of the street; the other way led up a lazy hill, and Rachel could almost smell the salt water

    from here.

Nope, he assured her. Nothing wrong.

She moved ahead of him, stopping to face him. Then whats the story?

Michael shoved his hands in his pockets, fidgeting. Maybe Im not avoiding somebody,he ventured.

Rachel frowned. I dont follow you.

Maybe Im not switching patrols to get away from Akilah, he added.

Rachel blinked. Now Im not sure I want to follow you.

Michael felt his resolve waver; he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Is it such abad thing to want to spend time with you?

Rachel offered him a sarcastic chuckle. Some people would say yes.

Michael shook his head. Not me.

Rachel set her hands on her hips. Michael, when were out patrolling, we have to keep

our heads in the game, and notnot She stopped, making eye contact with him. Not

    someplace else.

My head is in the game, he responded, dropping his voice. Even more this way,

because when Im with AkilahIm mostly worrying about you. But when Im with you He

trailed off. Then I know someones watching out for you.

I dont need watching out for, she remarked.

Everyone needs watching out for, he argued. Even the slayer.

Rachel shook her head, sighing. What am I gonna do with you? she asked him. Before Michael could answer, their earpieces squawked; Billy and Laura were pinned

down by archers near the Hellmouth.

Thats a long way from here, Rachel groused. Even if we run

We dont haveany choice, Michael pointed out. Come on, lets go.

The two of them took off at a sprint, Michael naturally faster than Rachel, but he paced

himself so that he did not outdistance her. The run from the beach to the vicinity to theHellmouth took them the better part of fifteen minutes, and both of them huffed and puffed as

they came upon the edge of the green area that surrounded the Hellmouth.

    Billy! Rachel called out.

Michael motioned for her to be quiet. If the archers are still there

Afterten minutes? Rachel wondered. They would have to suck pretty bad. And theseguys dont.

No, a voice agreed behind them. We dont.Michael glanced behind him and saw a green-robed archer pointing a nocked arrow at

Rachels back, right behind her heart. The vampire shifted yellow eyes to gaze at him. Move,

she threatened. Or she gets it.

Move where? Michael inquired. Rachel shot him daggers with her eyes but saidnothing.

Toward the portal, the archer supplied.

Okay, Michael agreed. He slipped his hands in his jacket pockets and began walking,Rachel next to him.

The archer shifted the bow to him. Hands where I can see them, she hissed.

Right, Michael agreed, raising his hand and spraying holy water at the archers face.

Though the green robes almost completely hid the woman, she nonetheless flinched as the watercame at her; Michael threw himself at her, grabbing the arrow before she could fire, and the two

of them fell in a heap. The archer released the bow and grabbed Michael by the throat, snarling.

Idiot human, she rasped. Did you really think you could trick an Immortal? She ignored thehissing spot on the top of her cheek where a drop of holy water had touched her skin, burning a

    hole.

Rachel darted to her left and snatched up the arrow. He didnt have to beat you, she

pointed out. He just had to knock you down.

No! the woman spat, trying to throw Michael off her as Rachel plunged the sharp arrowinto her eye. She resisted crying out, but she couldnt restrain herself from bringing her hands up

to pluck the barb from her skull. As she did so, Michael rolled off her and Rachel leaned in andstaked her.

The two of them looked at one another.

And now we have a bow, Michael noted, picking up the archers discarded weapon.

Rachel nodded. We make a good team, she admitted. Lets go find the others.

*Riley and Akilah had arrived on the scene moments before Michael and Rachel they

hadnt been close either but they had possessed the good fortune to stumble directly onto an

archers hiding spot. Riley had dusted her almost before she could turn around, and he and

Akilah had stayed on the periphery, searching for more archers.Akilah pointed wordlessly as Michael and Rachel took out their sentry. Thats two

theyre down, Riley noted. I wonder how many they brought to this little party.

He took two steps out onto the street that bounded the field where the Hellmouth lay; anarrow whistled, and he dove for cover. The arrow thunked home in the front panel of a Buick,

and Riley slipped back behind the cars. Akilah sidled up to him.

We need help, she suggested.Riley nodded and slipped on his eyephones, wondering where Laura was.

Billy, Akilah said softly, tapping on her earphone.

    Yeah? the vampire answered.

    You okay? she inquired.

A disgusted sigh, then, Im a bloody goddamn pin-cushion. These bastards have shot mefull of arrows. He paused and then added, And before you ask, yeah, the slayers fine. Got her

hidin underneath me. Shes sort ofprotected, for now.Akilah signed off and relayed that to Riley, who nodded as he made a call of his own.

    Pike?

The man woke up, bleary-eyed, but he answered his phone. Who? Riley? Whats up?

Lauras pinned down at the Hellmouth. I need you and Shelley and a van and I need you

now. We have to get out of here. Group of archers, I dont know how many, they were waiting

for us, an ambush. I need you here five minutes ago.

On my way, Pike promised, launching himself off the couch and ignoring Xanders

questioning look as he moved to the bedroom. Shell? he asked, knocking on the door. Whenshe didnt reply, he went in.

Shelley slept on top of the bed, over the covers. Shed shed her jeans, and Pike stopped a

moment, taking her in, the way her blonde hair fell just past the collar of her shirt, the slightrising and falling of her chest, her long, strong legs, tanned, toned, curled up close to her

stomach.Must be a little chilly,Pike realized as he sat down gently on the bed. Shell? he asked

    again.

She stirred, waking up. Whats wrong? she asked.

Pike paused a moment. He had always found Shelley at her most beautiful right after she

woke up, and now was no exception. He took an extra second to pore over her face before he

told her, They need us at the Hellmouth, now. Lauras pinned down by a bunch of archers and

    they need our help.

For a brief moment, what kept them at odds with one another dissipated, and all Shelley

could see was the man she had fallen in love with years ago, ready to go out again and riskhimself for someone else. She loved that quality in him dearly, and she had a flash of regret at

how badly she had treated him recently. She sat up on the bed and kissed him, briefly, on the

lips. Then lets go, she spoke, standing up and sliding into her snug jeans. Pike, momentarilysurprised, stood and watched as she pulled on her shoes.

All the stuff in the van? she inquired.

    He nodded yes.

Good. Go start the car. Ill be right out.

He raised an eyebrow, and Shelley jerked a thumb at the bathroom. I have to pee, sheexplained. Pike nodded in understanding and dashed back into the living room.

Whats the buzz? Xander asked as Pike scooted by.

Slayers in trouble, he snapped off as he made his way out the front door.

Xander looked after him, but Pike was already at the van, tearing open the door, startingit up. Xander heard a toilet flush and Shelley emerged from the bathroom, slipping on her leather

coat. Lets go, she told him.

Xander looked up at her. What?

Lets go, she repeated, pulling on her gloves.

Xander frowned at her. I told you, Im

You quit, I know, she stated. I just dont care. Lets go.

She moved over to Xander. If anything happens to that girl because you sat on your a ss

goddamn hospital. Now get up off your ass and lets go.

    the couch. Now, she hissed.

    Shelley, hey, look

Its not a question, she relayed. Maybe everybody else here will let you be all whiny

and let you sit on your ass and do nothing, but not me. Lauras in trouble, we need all the handswe can get, youre coming unless you are physically unable. And youre not.

    Xander scowled at her.

Not yet, anyway, she amended. Come on.

He made no move, and she grabbed his shirt and began to pull him with her when he

relented. Okay, okay, Im coming! he told her. I just need two things first.

Shelley folded her arms, the leather jacket creaking.

One, he said, picking the Eye up off the table and sliding it around his neck. He moved

    toward the front door.

Whats the other thing? she inquired. Outside, Pike beeped the horn.

Its in Rileys car. I forgot I had it, but I think it might come in useful.

Is it something you use to kill vampires? Shelley asked with obviously thinningpatience.

Xander nodded. Oh, yes. Oh yes indeed.

*Lets move, Maleena told her troop. Ten of them, the finest archers in the world,

probably, all popped up from their hiding spots and converged at a prearranged spot of the field.Maleena had brought an even dozen with her, so she was just a little surprised when only ten

appeared. But she was determined to carry out her mission. Converge on the slayer. Kill her

allies and take her. And remember, alive. Maleena paused as the women surged forward. Youare not to kill her, understand? You die before you kill her. Thats the Kings command. Shejoined her troop as they moved, double-time, across the field, closing in on the slayer.

Billy looked up, stuck full of arrows, and saw the women running toward him. Oh,

    bloody hell, he spat.

    What? Laura mumbled beneath him.

Best you get to runnin, little girl. Theyre comin for you.

If I run, theyll shoot me, Laura pointed out.

If you stay here, youre dead for sure. Billy rose up to his knees, allowing her toscramble out from beneath him. Laura paused as she saw him pincushioned with arrows.

    Are you okay? she asked.

Go! Billy bellowed at her, and she took off, running with slayer-enhanced muscles forall she was worth, legs churning as she sprinted across the grass.

Stop her! Maleena spoke intoher eyephones. Wound her if you have to, but dont let

    her get away!

At that moment, a call came in. Maleena recognized it as Kasindas number. Not now,

Kasinda, Im just a little busy.

Talk to me, Maleena. Tell me you have the slayer.

Were working on that right now, she told her superior.

Where are you? Kasinda inquired. The Hellmouth, Maleena returned. Weve just about got her.

Abruptly, a bow twanged, and one of the Immortals pitched forward, an arrow in herknee. Maleena turned to see the source of the attack and saw Michael, standing on the far side of

the field, using one of the Immortals bows. How dare they! How dare humans pollute our

    belongings!

The slayer is not alone, Maleena advised her troops. This may be a trap to draw us

    out. Be wary.

Two of the Immortals stopped at the Hellmouth itself, bows trained on Billy. He looked

up at them. You bleeding sods! I had her, until you shot me full of arrows!

Liar! one of the women spat.

Billy revealed his hunting face. Oh, yeah, a vampire workin with a slayer. Bloody

    likely, that.

The other Immortal shook her head. Come on, she told her compatriot. For goodmeasure she fired on Billy, pinning his foot to the ground. He howled in pain.

Dont you go anywhere, she warned him, taking off.

Bloody Christ, Billy growled as they left. Not gonna sit here and bleeding wait for

you to come back now, am I? He began tugging on the arrow that trapped his foot to the earth, grunting in pain as he worked it out of the ground.

Laura reached the street and kept running, her slayer senses going berserk. She could feelvampires all around her, closing in on her; she could even feel their hostility, their anger, and she

knew this time she would not get away, that this time the odds were too much, that some other

girl would be unfortunate enough to be called, and she

Laura! Riley called out, to her right. Over here! Now!The slayer shifted her direction just in time; two arrows whizzed by her as she dodged

behind a Ford pick-up truck and ran full tilt down the sidewalk. She saw Riley up ahead, holding

a stake in each hand, Akilah next to him, crouched, waiting for an attack. Laura sped up,breathing deep and pouring on the speed, when one of the Immortals stepped out from behind a

car and ploughed into her; vampire and slayer went down on the concrete in a tumble, rolling

    along.

Riley and Akilah leapt up to help her; bows twanged, and they were forced to duck down

again as the Datsun they hid behind became riddled with arrows.

Rachel? Akilah begged into her earphone.

Were comin, the older woman breathed in response, but were on the far side of the

field. Theyre all runnin away from us.

Shit, Akilah swore. Riley glanced at her, but she shook her head no. Laura grabbed the Immortal, fear and anger mixing within her, and she tore the womans

cowl off. The vampire insidehunting face showingsnarled at her, and Laura punched her so

hard she broke teeth. Not today, Laura spat, punching the vampire again, breakin g her nose.

You are not gonna kill me today. Youre not

An arrow pierced her side, and she cried out, clutching it. The vampire near her stood

momentarily dazed by her quick but savage beating.

Laura! Riley screamed. Heedless of the danger, he made a break for her. Arrows

whistled around him, embedding themselves in cars, telephone poles, and peoples front lawns. One finally found him, however, burying itself in his shoulder, and he stumbled and fell on the

sidewalk, no more than twenty feet from Laura. No! he cried out. Somebody, help!

Riley? she called out for him as five Immortals closed in on her. Maleena steppedforward.

Slayer, she addressed Laura. We have no desire to kill you. But if you fight us anyfurther, we shall have to hurt you more and kill all of your friends. If you surrender to us now,

    we will let them live.

Laura gazed at Riley, twenty feet away, staring back at her in agony, holding hisshoulder. He shook his head no, his eyes pleading with her.

A car screeched around the corner, and they all turned to look. A jet black Dodge SUV

raced down the street, screeching to a halt near Laura. The slayer could feel a vampire inside,

and she lowered her eyes to the ground. Fine. Ill surrender if you let them go.Maleena signalled to her troops; those who could converged on the slayer and moved her

    into the SUV. Akilah made her move then, running directly at them, heedless of the danger;

Maleena snapped off an arrow and the young woman went down, a shaft protruding from her

    thigh.

No! Riley cried out. Take me instead! Leave her alone!

Maleena shook her head and piled into the SUV, shutting the door.

    Shes wounded, Kasinda accused Maleena.

Shes alive. And they are resourceful. I suggest we leave, now.

Kasinda stepped on the gas and they all sank back in their seats as the vehicle

accelerated, leaving the scene. It sped toward the corner, ready to head off toward the homeKasinda was renting, the temporary headquarters of the Immortals in Sunnydale.

*Where is she? Pike asked as he stepped on the gas. The heavy old van rumbled

forward, its engine groaning as he pushed it to its limit.

Isnt that her? Xander spoke, pointing at a figure running across a field.

Thats Rachel, Shelley identified. She reached back behind her and grabbed the Eye

from around Xanders neck. Reveal slayer! she commanded, and the beam pointed right at an

SUV heading directly for them at high speed.

    Everybody belted in? Pike asked.

Youre not Xander began, but he saw that decidedly, Pike was. He threw himself tothe floor as Pike aimed the big Ford at the smaller Dodge. A moment later he felt a sickening

crunch, and he slid forward into the back of Pikes captains chair. Shelley swore under her

breath as she fought with her broken seat belt.

Lets get her, she commanded, drawing a knife and severing the belt so she couldescape the chair. She stepped out onto the pavement just in time to see six vampires, five of them

in green robes, issue from the SUV. Two of them clutched Laura between them, and Shelley

could see blood on the slayers shirt and pants. Shes hurt.

Shelley whipped out a stake. Im only gonna say this once. Let her go.

Kasinda leapt forward and socked Shelley across the jaw; the woman went down quickly.

Pike kicked open his door and fired a super-soaker amongst the milling vampires; he hadaimed at the ones holding Laura, but he only hit one of them. The spray mostly washed a

vampire nearby, and she began to smolder at once. The Immortal holding Laura retained her grip

even though the holy water began to penetrate her clothes.

Kasinda revealed her hunting face. Children, playing with toys, she spat, leaping over

the crumpled frame of the front of the SUV and landing near Pike. She grabbed the super-soakeraway from him and tossed it aside, then clawed his face, tearing open his cheek. Pike grabbed the

wound and sagged back into the vans driver seat. Kasinda greatly desired to kill him; but shehad to remember her priorities. She scrambled back to the other side and addressed the remaining

Immortals. On foot, then. Come on.

They started to move out, Kasinda, Maleena, two others, and Laura, when Xanderstepped out of the back of the van.

Kasinda stopped. How many of you do I have to kill? she groused.

Xander slid the red katana from its sheath. I dont want this any more than you do.

Matter of fact, I probably want it a whole lot less, he told her. But those people well, oncethey healare gonna beat the living crap out of me if I dont try to stop you, and Im not big onthat.

Youre an idiot, Kasinda rasped. Do you know who I am?

Xander nodded. Youre some vampire bitch out to kill the slayer. He held the sword

high. Im just gonna warn you, I suck with this. But it wont matter.

Kasinda growled at him, truly frightening with her hunting face revealed; she prepared to

attack him when the slayer, behind her, cried out. She turned to see Rachel barrel into thevampires holding Laura; all four of them, the two humans and the two vampires, went down in a

    heap.

Kasinda clenched her fists in anger. How many of you are there? she complained,

lashing out with a booted foot and kicking Rachel in the temple, stunning her. Now gather the

    slayer and lets go!

No, Michael said, training his bow onKasinda. Let her go. Now.

Kasinda laughed at him and came at him. Michael shot, and his arrow landed true, hittingher in the breast; but Kasinda wore her dark jumpsuit, reinforced, and the arrow would barely

leave a bruise, even from this close range. She lashed out with a long leg in mid-flight, kicking

the bow away from Michael and knocking him to the ground. She landed and turned to face

Xander. Ive really had enough. Now put that little toy away and step aside, before I have to goback on my promise to the slayer. She pointed at Xander. Now!

In response, Xander stepped forward and ran the sword through an Immortal picking

Laura up. The woman turned in anger at the injury and prepared to attack Xander when thewound widened, eating away at her form; in a moment, she had exploded into ash.

Maleena came up next to Kasinda. The Red Dragon, she hissed. We cannot stand

    against it.

Kasinda snarled, How the hell did that meatbag get his hands on it?Friend of the slayer? Maleena shot back. Thats how.

Kasinda shook her head. Something doesnt add up here.

Xander regarded her. You wanna leave now, or do I have to give you another

    demonstration?

Kasinda growled at him, desperately desiring to rip his throat open; but Maleena held her

back, and the two of them took off across the field, running past the Hellmouth and retreatinginto the residential section of Sunnydale like phantoms in the night.

Xander looked around at all the unconscioushe hopedbodies. What a freakin mess.

He sighed. Yousee? You see why I stopped doing this shit?

Laura glanced up at him. You picked a great time to come out of retirement, she

    commented. Then she passed out.

*Amazingly, Pikes van, though the front end lay in tatters, still ran. Even the radiator had

not been damaged in the head-on collision. The passengers side tire had been pushedfrighteningly out of alignment, but other than that, and a colossal amount of cosmetic damage,

naturally, the old Ford had survived the accident in surprisingly good shape.

Riley lay in the back of the van, on the carpet, his wound hastily patched. He tended to

Laura, leaning over her and sewing her wound closed. Shes lost a lot of blood, but unless those

damned vampires used poison, she should be okay. Good thing shes a slayer.

Near him, Akilah held the red gauze on her thigh and tried not to think about how much

her wound hurt. Laura looked to be in far worse shape than she, and Riley didnt say a peep

about his shoulder, although it had to hurt. That much blood, ithasto hurt. But aint none of usgot through this without a scratch except Xander, that lucky son of a bitch.

Shelley tended to Pike. She had cleaned out the scratches on his face and applied some

hydrogen peroxide to them, and then she had applied some gauze. Smart thinking having such a

well-stocked first aid kit in the van, she thought as she wiped some blood off his neck. Youokay? she asked him tenderly.

If you are, he replied. Thats gonna be some bruise on your jaw.Shelley smiled, and then stopped when it hurt. Those are gonna be some nice scars on

    your cheek, she teased back.

Pike winked at her. I can always grow a beard.

She took his hand. Thank God youre all right, she breathed, setting her head on hischest.

In the rear set ofcaptains chairs, Rachel examined her elbow, which had been split open

in her fall. She remained quiet; hers was just about the least of the wounds of the group, askinned elbow, and she made a face as Michael took her arm and gently turned it so he could

    take a closer look.

    Im okay, Rachel assured him.
