lewisburg, Pennsylvania

Bucknell’s hilltop campus slopes into Victorian Lewisburg, population roughly 6,000, a town in which historic preservationists have influence. Lewisburg enjoys ornamental vanitites that are not part of modern architecture. Gingerbread porches, carved wooden doors and three-globed streetlights that make this town memorable. Historic roots are important in Lewisburg. The town celebrates the holidays with the annual Victorian Holiday Parade and exhibits at the Packwood House Museum and the Slifer House Museum. Its many historical sites include an Underground Railroad station. A weekly market brings Amish farmers to town in horse-drawn wagons. Lewisburg is ranked 15th in the nation in the book, The 100 best Small Towns in America, written by Norman Crampton. The town earned this ranking by scoring high in areas such as the number of physicians per 100,000, the percentage of college-educated residents, the lowest number of serious crimes, and its location near state parks as well as being host to an institution of higher learning. The borough of Lewisburg began its early life as “Derrstown” named for its settler, landowner, and miller Ludwig Derr. While the date remains obscure, the historians point out that in English, the German name for Ludwig is Lewis. The town’s growth from 1785 untill well into the 19th century was slow due to the lack of transportation, untill a ferry was built to carry wagons across the Susquehanna River and a canal was completed in 1833. Lewisburg, surveyed in 1769, was not officially founded by Ludwig Derr untill 1785. The borough was incorporated on March 31, 1812. Located on the Susquehanna, it has benefited with every development in transportation: turnpike, canal, railroad and now highways. Enhanced by the chartering of Bucknell University on Feb. 5, 1846, and the seating of the county government on Oct. 9, 1855, the community expanded its development past the Fifth Street to what is now Route 15. Most of the builders of this community are protected through historic district regulation.

ONE OF THE BEST SMALL TOWNS IN AMERICA

In addition to Bucknell, the Lewisburg Federal Prison System and Evangelical Community Hospital enhance the area’s financial stability. Education has always played a primary part in Lewisburg’s social society. As early as 1790 the basics were taught in private homes. In 1805 the “Log Cabin Academy” was built. In 1835 three new schools were added, while the present system consists of two elementary schools, a middle school - which was recently named the top middle school in the state - and a high school. Sixty-five percent of the Lewisburg’s high school graduates go on to college. For more on Lewisburg, please visit the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership website at www.lewisburgpa.com.

Bucknell Bison Athleticssetting the stAndArd of excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the na-tion.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 123 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

• In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 322 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

• With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the over-all, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and wom-en’s outdoor track & field.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 121.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA nAtionAl Model in ProMoting the scholAr-Athlete ideAl

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-ath-lete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, ad-ministration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Addition-ally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of com-munity within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete rep-resentation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this “Leadership Summit” is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Lead-ership Academy programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real life experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teamates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

facts/mission statement

Quick FactsThe Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard

of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher educa-tion, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Buck-nell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to provid-ing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.”

The Plan comprises five strategies.Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recre-

ation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a glob-

ally integrated and intercultural world;Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and

electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun

implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell.

Bucknell athletics facilities

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 21 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Academic All-Americans in 41 years and 122 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 21 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construc-tion. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club which is now home to a new indoor/outdoor Instructional Golf Facility; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team that contains a new FieldTurf surface since 2010; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

2012 season PreVieW

Seven years ago Randall Goldsborough had a feeling that one day she might find herself back at Bucknell. One of the most successful figures in American women’s lacrosse, Goldsborough came to Lewisburg in 2003 for her first Division I head coaching job. But after two strong seasons, she resigned to focus on one more run with the U.S. National Team.

A part of three national championship teams as a student-athlete and coach at Maryland and a 12-year member of Team USA, where she was part of a World Cup-winning squad in 2001, Goldsborough served as head coach at two top prep schools in the Washington, D.C., area and as an assistant coach at Stanford after departing Bucknell. But when the head coaching position at Bucknell opened up last spring, it seemed like an obvious fit from both sides.

“Bucknell has always had a special place in my heart ever since I left, and I have been waiting for the right chance to get back,” Goldsborough said after accepting the position in June. “I am absolutely thrilled to be back. The timing worked out perfectly for me to come back into a role that I once cherished. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but this is a program that can be successful in the very near future.”

As she returns to Bucknell, Goldsborough will be taking over one of the youngest teams in the country. The 2012 Bison have no seniors, four juniors, 10 sophomores and 12 freshmen. The program has struggled in the win-loss column recently, but with such a young team there is very little institutional knowledge of past seasons, and Goldsborough says that every bit of the team’s focus is directed on the future.

“The bottom line is that we want our student-athletes to have a great experience at Bucknell,” says Goldsborough. “We want them to truly be a family, to care about their teammates, and also to play great lacrosse. That emphasis on family has happened already through fall ball and the offseason, and now we are able to focus on X’s and O’s. It is going to take a lot of hard work, but everyone really wants to do it.”

The team’s two juniors — Madison Hurwitz and Adrienne Wendling — along with sophomore Sophie Kleinert, have been elected captains for 2012. Hurwitz scored a career-high 29 goals last season, tying her for the team lead. Last year’s top point-producer, midfielder Katelyn Miller (24 goals, 13 assists, 37 points), is also back as a sophomore this year. Wendling has played both defense and midfield, and she was coached by Goldsborough as a freshman at The Bullis School, so she is fa-miliar with her coaching style and system.

The Bison lost three starters to graduation fol-lowing last season, including two former All-Patriot Leaguers in do-everything middie Julia Braun and four-year starting goalie and Academic All-American Alyssa DeLorenz, along with four-year starting defender Ashley St. John. Fortunately, Goldsborough inherited a solid first-year class, featuring several players who will be counted upon

for key minutes right away.Among the attack unit, Hurwitz

and sophomores Lindsey Ferro and Molly Ford have the most experience, as all three were regulars a year ago. Hurwitz had seven multi-goal games, including a six-goal outburst in a win over Manhattan. Ferro tallied seven goals and four assists, and she had a five-point (3G, 2A) performance in her second career game, a win over Howard. Ford was second on the team with 12 assists last season, including a pair of five-assist games in wins over Manhattan and Howard, and she also tallied four goals. Just as important as their point production around the crease, Hurwitz, Ferro and Ford have become leaders as well.

The remainder of the attack unit also appears promising with a good diversity of skills, but the group is still in need of some season-ing. Freshmen Chloe Chou, Caroline Collins, Emily Kookogey, Arriana Sajjad and Claire Switala have all stood out in fall ball and preseason workouts. Chou is a gifted feeder who will have the ball in her stick quite a bit in the offensive end of the field. Collins came in as a defender but was moved to attack to take advantage of her driving ability. Kookogey is a powerful player with perhaps the hardest shot on the squad. Sajjad is another of-fensive workhorse who can drive the ball, absorb contact and create a shot. And Switala is a good post-up player who likes to work around the crease for a shot.

Miller is certainly one of the keys to the Buck-nell midfield. In addition to piling up 37 points a year ago, she led the team in caused turnovers (20), ranked second in ground balls (31) and fourth in draw controls (19). Miller is a gritty player who is adept at coming out of a scrum with a 50-50 ball, and she is a big part of the team’s transition game. And of utmost importance to the coaching staff, she is one of the team’s most consistent performers. Miller recorded a point in 15 of the 16 games last season, including a four-point outing against Duquesne.

Wendling moved up from defense to midfield midway through last season and recorded four goals and three assists. Sophomores Kleinert and Kerri Althouse also figure to play prominent roles. Kleinert has quietly become a team leader, both vocally and through her hustle on the field. She played in every game last season, starting 14, and logged six goals and four assists. Kleinert had a strong finish to the 2011 campaign, scoring five goals in the last four games. Althouse is one of the fastest players on the team, is an improved 1-on-1 defender, and can be a weapon in the open field.

First-year players Blair McDonald and Cori Thielemann are also battling for time in the midfield. McDonald’s biggest asset is her speed, while Thielemann is a tall, steady middie who is strong on draw controls. Another newcomer, the

versatile Carly Downs, has been used as a utility player, seeing time on defense, in the midfield and also up front.

The Bison do have some experience com-ing back on defense, led by sophomores Char D’Amico, Andrea Feldman and Elizabeth Gauf. All three started games for Bucknell last season, and all three have improved significantly in the last year. D’Amico is coming off a strong fall season, and she is a very smart player when it comes to her positioning. Feldman, who can also play midfield, is a good 1-on-1 defender with excellent footwork. Gauf rarely gets beaten and is a tough, steady defender who is learning to become more vocal in the back.

Newcomers Rebecca Vetere and Alex Wallace also join the defensive unit. Wallace, a former at-tacker, has battled some injuries in her short time at Bucknell, but when healthy is a solid defender who is especially strong getting the ball cleared. Vetere is a strong, fit player who quickly impressed the coaches with her footwork and technique.

Bucknell will have a new starting goalie for the first time in four years, following the graduation of DeLorenz. Sophomore Emily Fask and freshman Caroline O’Neill are battling in preseason for the starting nod.

The Bison will face a daunting schedule in 2012, starting with a road game at Duke on Feb. 4, followed by a home game against Penn State on Feb. 15 at Graham Field.

“The girls are so excited to open the season with Duke,” says Goldsborough. “They are going to be in a position to challenge themselves right away, and hopefully we can draw on that experi-ence for the rest of the year. Duke is one of those programs that we would like to emulate. I can’t predict how many games we will win this year, but I know that the program is going to be in a good place. We are fit, excited and dedicated to being as good as we can possibly be. The players in the program truly want to be good. They have so many great things going for them as student-athletes at Bucknell, but they want success in lacrosse to help define who they are.”

RANDALL gOLDSBOROUgH

Head CoachMaryland ’97

Randall Goldsborough, a former standout player at the Univer-sity of Maryland and with the U.S. National Team, will return for her second stint as Bucknell’s head women’s lacrosse coach, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced on June 20, 2011. Goldsborough previously coached the Bison in 2003 and 2004, leading the team to .500 or better records and berths in the Patriot League Tournament both years.

In her two seasons at Bucknell, Goldsborough coached back-to-back Patriot League Offensive Players of the Year in Suzanne Raf-faele and Meredith Wright, as well as a PL Defensive Player of the Year in goalie Nicole Kallis. The Bison finished 8-8 in 2003 and 8-7 in 2004, and in 2003 they defeated Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals to reach the championship game for the first time in program history.

Goldsborough’s 2004 team placed a national-best 10 student-athletes on the IWLCA All-Academic Team, and that squad’s 3.43 combined grade-point average was the second-best mark in the na-tion.

“We are certainly pleased and excited to welcome Randall Golds-borough back to Bucknell,” said Hardt. “In her two previous seasons here, she was highly regarded by her student-athletes and our entire staff, and we were sorry to see her leave us after the 2004 season. Randall has achieved success at every level of lacrosse as both a player and coach, and she is adept at passing on all the experiences that she has collected through the years.”

“I am absolutely thrilled to be back at Bucknell,” said Goldsbor-ough. “I’d like to thank John Hardt for giving me this opportunity. It was really insightful talking to John and the staff and some of the student-athletes on the team throughout the search process, and I really came away with the feeling that everyone here is excited about the future of the program and the success that we know we can have. The timing is perfect for me to come back and take over a program that I feel is capable of achieving a lot of success in the very near future. Bucknell has always had a special place in my heart ever since I left, and I have been waiting for the right chance to get back. We have a lot of work in front of us, but there is a lot of talent on the team, and I can’t wait to sprint right back into it and get started again.”

Following the 2004 campaign, Goldsborough departed Bucknell to continue her international playing career while also serving as girls’ athletic director and varsity lacrosse and soccer coach at The Bullis School in Potomac, Md. In 2007 she headed west to become assistant women’s lacrosse coach and recruiting coordinator at Stan-ford, where she helped lead the Cardinal to the MPSF championship.

Since the 2007-08 academic year, Goldsborough has been serv-ing as a physical education and health teacher as well as head girls’

lacrosse and soccer coach and assistant basketball coach at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

A 1997 Maryland graduate with a degree in kinesiological scienc-es, Goldsborough was part of three NCAA championship teams in College Park. A student-athlete on the Terrapins lacrosse squad from 1993-96, the four-year starter was a member of Maryland’s back-to-back national championship teams in 1995 and 1996. In addition, she served as an assistant coach for her alma mater when the Terps won their third consecutive national title in 1997.

She went on to serve as an assistant coach at North Carolina in 1998, where she helped the Tar Heels reach the NCAA Final Four. After a one-year stint as lacrosse and soccer coach at her alma mater St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, Md., in the fall of 1999 she earned her first collegiate head coaching position at Division III Franklin & Marshall. While in that role, she led the team to a top-15 national ranking in each season, while also consistently coaching players to regional and national All-America status. She accumulated a 26-22 record with the Diplomats and led her team to two straight Centennial Conference semifinal appearances.

An active participant in national coaching camps and clinics since 1993, Goldsborough has also been heavily involved in lacrosse on the international level. She was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1994-2006 and was part of gold medal-winning U.S. World Cup squad in 2001. Goldsborough, who also played on the soccer team at Maryland, has been a consultant to the Wales national women’s lacrosse team, and in 2010 she coached a team with the Rebels Lacrosse Club.

FORREST STiLLWELL

Assistant CoachAuburn ’01

One of Randall Goldsborough’s first tasks upon her return to Buck-nell as head women’s lacrosse coach was to hire Forrest Stillwell as her assistant coach. Since 2007, Stillwell has served as head varsity girls’ lacrosse coach at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta, Ga.

Stillwell, who will be involved in all aspects of on-field coaching, scouting and recruiting at Bucknell, was one of the most success-ful high school coaches in the state of Georgia after taking over a program without a winning tradition. While supervising a staff of five coaches, he helped lead Holy Innocents’ to the 2011 state champion-ship game as well as the 2010 state semifinals. Stillwell was selected to coach in a statewide all-star game in both 2008 and 2009, all this even though the team finished 2-15 the year before his arrival.

In addition to his duties as head girls’ lacrosse coach, Stillwell was also an outdoor and physical education teacher, where he imple-mented a new K-12 curriculum. He also served as an assistant foot-ball coach for a team that made the state playoffs every year from 2008-10 and reached the quarterfinals in 2009. From 2005-08, Still-well held the role of assistant athletic director at the school.

Last January, Stillwell was a lecturer as the annual US Lacrosse Convention in Baltimore. He has worked with the Positive Coaching Alliance and is a co-sponsor with Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Stillwell has been the co-owner of the Atlanta Draw, a competitive U-13 travel lacrosse team, and he is the owner of Team and Outdoor Performance LLC, a company that specializes in designing team-oriented lacrosse camps and outdoor leadership trips.

Stillwell is a 2001 graduate of Auburn University with a degree in political science. His coaching career began as an assistant football coach at Citrus High School in Inverness, Fla., in 2001, and he later served as head girls’ soccer coach and assistant football coach while teaching history and economics at Crystal River (Fla.) High School.

ClearinghouseThe NCAA mandates that all student-athletes interested in competing at the Division I or II level must be certified through the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. Contact high school coaches, athletics director or guidance counselor for necessary paperwork.

ContactsAs per NCAA by-law 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter be-tween a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institu-tional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face en-counter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contacts per prospective student-athlete.

CorrespondenceIt is important that the prospective student-athlete get in touch with as-sistant coach Forrest Stillwell at [email protected] as soon as possible. A simple letter of inquiry into the lacrosse program will initiate the recruiting process. In the spring of your junior year or early senior year is the most appropriate time to contact the coaching staff.

DeadlinesNovember 15, 2012 -- Early Decision I Application deadlineJanuary 1, 2013 -- Early Decision II and Regular Decision Application deadline

February 15, 2013 -- Financial Aid Application deadline

Early DecisionStudents who are absolutely, 100% confident Bucknell is their top college choice are encouraged to apply during the Early Decision process. Ad-vantages are you’ll have an Admissions decision prior to Christmas and all students accepted during the early decision process are guaranteed financial aid for which they qualify.

EvaluationsAs per NCAA by-law 13.02.6.1, an evaluation is any off-campus activ-ity designed to assess the academic qualifications or athletic ability of a prospect, including any visit to a prospect’s educational institution (during which no contact occurs) or the observation of a prospect participating in any practice or competition at any site. We are limited in our number of evaluations per prospective student-athlete.

Financial AidBucknell University does not offer athletic scholarships in the sport of rowing. All financial aid is awarded on the basis of need. Prospective student-athletes should complete the CSS “Profile Form” in the early fall.

InterviewsThe coaching staff strongly encourages all prospective student-athletes to arrange for an on-campus interview with the Admissions Office. If it is not possible to interview on campus, alumni interviews are highly recom-mended. All interviews should be arranged through the Admissions Office by calling 570-577-1101.

Telephone CallsAs per NCAA by-law 13.1.3.1, institutional staff members may not telephone a prospect (or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians) prior to July 1 following the prospect’s completion of the junior year in high school. After July 1, institutional staff members may telephone a prospect once per week (measured Sunday through Saturday). The once-per-week limit applies to the entire institution.

Video TapesIn an attempt to make an accurate assessment as soon as possible, it is recommended videotapes be forwarded to the coaching staff’s attention as soon as possible. The video need not be an elaborate production. Some simple race or practice tape is sufficient.

VisitsOfficial: According to NCAA by-law 13.7.1.2, a prospect may not make more than five expense-paid visits to NCAA member institutions, regard-less of the number of sports in which the prospect is involved. An institution may not provide an expense-paid visit to a prospect who has not presented the institution with a high school (or college) academic transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT, a PACTPlus, or an ACT test taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions. The official visit may not exceed 48 hours.

Unofficial: According to NCAA by-law 13.8.1, a prospect may visit an institution’s campus at the prospect’s own expense an unlimited number of times and may make an unofficial visit before the prospect’s senior year in high school.

If a prospective student-athlete and/or parent has any questions, please feel free to call Head Coach Randall Goldsborough at 570-577-3717. Also, please feel free to forward any correspondence you feel will be helpful in her assessment of a prospective student-athlete.
