Buchanan County Master Gardeners Donate to Local Library Article by Ashley Sherrets, Buchanan County Iowa State University Exte nsion and Outreach,
Agriculture/Horticulture Program Coordinator, Master Gardener Coordinator
The Mission of the Buchanan County Master Gardeners is to provide current, research-based, home horticulture information and education to citizens of Iowa through programs and projects. Master Gardeners also give back by expanding knowledge in horticulture topics. For the last 12 years, Buchanan County Master Gardeners have donated a stipend of $80 to be used for horticulture related materials for the six libraries in Buchanan County, though recently, they have started purchasing and presenting books of the library’s choosing. The books are donated to each of the libraries in an annual rotation. In addition, they also purchase subscriptions to Garden Gate magazine for each of the libraries.
The Independence Public Library was the 2016 recipient, and the Buchanan County Master Gardeners were able to purchase and donate five horticulture related books for library patrons to enjoy. Be sure to stop in and check out these titles: Gardening Lab for Kids: 52 Fun Experiments to Learn, Grow, Harvest, Make, Play and Enjoy Your Garden, The Ultimate Step-by-Step Kids’ First Gardening Book: Fantastic Gardening Ideas for 5-12 Year Olds, From Growing Fruit and Vegetables and Having Fun with Flowers to Indoor and Outdoor Nature Projects, Growing Shrubs and Small Trees in Cold Climates, Weeds of the North Central States, and Garden Insects of North America. If you would like to know more about becoming a Buchanan County Master Gardener, please contact Ashley Sherrets, Master Gardener Coordinator with Buchanan County ISU Extension and Outreach, 319-334-7161 or [email protected].

Master Gardeners Provide Fresh Vegetables to Food Pantries Over 6,000 pounds of vegetables grown at ISU Research and Demonstration Farms
This article was originally published October 5, 2016., at the following link: <http://www.extension.iastate.edu/article/master-gardeners-provide-fresh-vegetables-food-pantries>
Entering the growing season, Iowa Master Gardeners and the staff at the seven Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms set a lofty goal of producing 1,500 pounds of vegetables per farm to be donated to Iowa food pantries.
The Master Gardeners are well on their way to reaching that goal as they enter the home stretch of production for this growing season – a goal that will provide over 30,000 servings of vegetables.
The seven ISU Research and Demonstration Farms have already grown more than 6,000 pounds of food that will be donated this year, according to Susan DeBlieck, Master Gardener program assistant with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
The gardens are supported throughout the summer by Master Gardener volunteers who harvest and deliver the fresh produce to their local food banks. The gardens are located in Rock Rapids, Lewis, Kanawha, Ames, Nashua, Fruitland and Crawfordsville and measure 80 x 40 feet each.
“Helping with the demonstration garden is a great learning experience,” said Charlie Johnson, a volunteer at the Horticulture Research Station in Ames. “I get to cooperate with other Master Gardeners who share my love of growing while getting hands-on practice with food safety. It is a good feeling to see the crates of fresh vegetables on their way to folks in our community.”
Contributions from Lewis, Crawfordsville, Nashua and Rock Rapids have been high, with each garden donating over 900 pounds of vegetables thanks to very favorable growing conditions. Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and melons are beginning to be harvested as well.
Field days were held at the seven demonstration gardens this summer, with over 180 attendees receiving valuable information about the types of vegetables that are grown by Master Gardeners and tips on how to improve their own home gardens.
The ISU Extension and Outreach Master Gardener Program, ISU Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education (SNAP-Ed) Program and the ISU Research and Demonstration Farms have collaborated to provide these opportunities to ensure that the produce grown will reach local food banks.
More information about the Master Gardener Program can be found online, as well as information on how to become a Master Gardener.

2016 Master Gardener Officers and Project & Committee Membership
A Note from Anita, our Steering Committee Chair
It’s Pumpkin and Indian Corn Time Again Am I embarrassed. Being a Master Gardener I would assume that I would know better than
weed “leaves of three” without gloves and then forget to wash my hands. Well I did. If you have seen me gyrating around town; I have been trying not to itch for 3 weeks. That darn ivy has been laughing at me.
Sounds like the new MG class is going well. It will be so nice to have some new blood in the group. I will be teaching indoor plants on the 20th. You all are sure invited to come and laugh or get extra education hours. It will be more of a how fast can I kill a plant in my house
The meeting this month will be my last as chair. It has been a lot of fun and I will miss it. I think Gean will do a super job. She has a lot of great ideas and will be an asset to the gardeners.
Bye for now.
If you are interested in joining any of these committees or if you thought you were on one and your name is not here, contact: Anita Miller, [email protected] or Ashley Sherrets, [email protected]
