Boston University School of Medicine takes great pleasure in recognizing the

generosity of alumni, members of the Board of Visitors, parents, faculty, staff, compa-

nies, corporations, foundations, organizations, and friends. Your support has made possible the establishment and

enhancement of many programs and projects at the School of Medicine. We thank you for your participation and for

your vision in helping to prepare the clinicians and scientists of tomorrow. Alumni class gifts include all donations made

during the fiscal year. While space constraints prevent us from listing the names of non-alumni donors of gifts under

$200, we sincerely appreciate the support of those many contributors.

Dear Friends,

Graduations are about past achievements and future possibilities. During Commencementthis May, as I greeted and handed each graduate their diploma, I was struck by the literal-ly thousands of Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) faculty and staff whosecombined effort made that moment possible for each member of the class. Certainly theirfamilies provided the home and support that made the study and achievement requiredfor acceptance into such a competitive profession possible. However, the richness of theBoston University School of Medicine (BUSM) community, past and present, invested inthese physicians and scientists is also impressive. We have almost 2,300 medical schoolfaculty and thousands of additional staff who contribute to the education and support ofour students, facilitating their development. Each of the faculty and staff in our depart-ments and dean’s offices, as well as the men and women who provide snow removal, maintain the green, and serve quesadillas on Wednesdays, contributes to the education of our students.

Our friends and donors also play an important role in each student’s development. Everyperson listed in this report has contributed to our graduates’ achievements at BUSM, aswell as the accomplishments of our current and future students.

Our students’ stories and the response of the BUSM family are inspirational. We have hadstudents with medical issues not covered by their insurance. In one instance, I informedseveral faculty and donors of the issue, and within a few weeks we had not only paid forthe care needed but now have a medical student emergency fund. We have discovered that some students have inadequate funds for meals; and other students have part-timejobs, not just to support themselves, but to send needed money home.

BUSM is planning many ways to keep a medical or graduate health sciences educationwithin the reach of students selected for their potential as physicians and scientists, independent of means. As many students spend hours commuting because they can no longer afford to live in the South End, we are planning expanded student housingadjacent to our campus. Access to safe, affordable housing nearby will significantly curtail travel time and expenses for many students.

The medical school also needs to renovate classrooms and study areas, including theAlumni Medical Library. While both residential space and renovated facilities are expensive, these investments attract and better serve our students.

BUSM continues to be a community-based teaching facility with a strong vision for the future. We continue to attract top faculty, clinicians, and researchers from around the world. With a global health perspective on learning, our students are continuallyexposed to new ideas, new treatments, and new ways of thinking that will ultimatelyshape the way they will practice medicine.

While the financial burden of a medical degree can be daunting to many prospective students, BUSM is working to help students achieve their dreams with as little educational debt as possible. But the simple fact remains that a medical education is expensive. We are developing programs that will help to significantly cut down on the amount of debt faced by our graduates, allowing them to concentrate solely on their medical studies.

Medicine is constantly changing, and BUSM must adapt to meet the demands of our profession. We are grateful for your generosity to BUSM and hope that you will continue to support student housing, scholarships, faculty recruiting, and classroom facilities. Please join me in thanking those listed on these pages for their leadership and support of this great institution.

Sincerely,

Karen Antman, MDProvost, Medical Campus

When you meet Stanley Konefal, MD ’47, you can immediately detect the contentment that envelopes his life. He has a serene manner and a warm nature. He will tell you that his life has been and is a good one. He will also tell you that he is fortunate to have had a wonderful career as a surgeon and has been graced with a loving family.

Raised in East Berlin, Connecticut, he was educated in a four-room schoolhouse priorto attending high school. He thought about engineering as a profession, but his firstlove was surgery, so he majored in pre-med at Tufts University, where he met his latewife, Catherine. He was accepted to and matriculated at BUSM in 1942. “BUSM wasa good choice for me,” says Konefal. “I appreciate the education I received and amgrateful because the training made it possible to live a wonderful life—to have a goodpractice and a successful career.”

Konefal served in the U.S. Army during World War II while in school. He did hisinternship and residency at Cambridge City Hospital and in 1951 opened his practicein Medford, Massachusetts, where he served that community for 35 years. “My practicewas made up of average people, and I had many long and good relationships with mypatients,” recalls Konefal. He was on the staff of Lawrence Memorial Hospital (nowpart of the Hallmark Healthcare System) and the New England Memorial Hospital.

“I have never been anything but grateful to Boston University School of Medicine,”says Konefal. His gratitude has been evident in his significant generosity to the School

of Medicine. A consistent contributor for 40 years, he established the Stanley andCatherine Konefal Student Revolving Loan Fund in 1991, and on the occasion of his50th Reunion he provided the lead gift for the class donation to the Alumni MedicalLibrary. He has also provided for the School in his estate plans with a charitableremainder trust.

“Stan Konefal serves as a role model for so many of us. A skilled and caring surgeon,he has never forgotten the opportunity afforded him by BUSM,” notes Barry Manuel,MD ’58, associate dean and executive director of the BUSM Alumni Association. “Hehas stayed connected to our School and frequently attends School functions. He quiet-ly and very generously supports BUSM and is one of the finest examples of the kind of outstanding alumni we are fortunate to have.”

He is dedicated to his family, and his two sons are both physicians. Stanley Jr. is a pedi-atric surgeon, and Joseph (BUSM ’77) is a urologist. His daughter, Catherine, ownsand manages an insurance company. He credits his late wife with being responsible fortheir children’s individual goodness. The grandfather of eight, he recently remarriedand lives most of the year on Singer Island, Florida.

“Dr. Konefal has our deep gratitude for his very long-standing and generous supportfor Boston University School of Medicine,” says Karen Antman, MD, dean andprovost of the Medical Campus. “He not only gives generously every year, he has alsomade a wonderful commitment to provide for the School in his estate plans.”

Stethoscopes for Students Alumni Listen and Provide the RxWhen the members of the Class of 2011 were welcomed to the BUSM communitythis fall, they each received a white coat that symbolizes their acceptance to the profession. They also received a stethoscope. This basic and required tool of the profession was provided to the new students gratis through the generosity of BUSM alumni who donated the cost of the instruments.

“Alumni who gave to this program made an important contribution to easing the burden on our medical students,” says Barry Manuel, MD ’58, BUSM Alumni Association ExecutiveDirector. “Providing these stethoscopes is another example of the outstanding generosity of our graduates.”

For a gift of $150, donors “sponsored” a stethoscope, and at the White Coat Ceremony a card with the donor’s name, class year, and specialty was inserted in the pocket of the coat.Leslie Serchuck, MD ’90, who sponsored five stethoscopes, says, “I still have my firststethoscope and my first pair of scrubs. They are the tangible proof of an important rite of passage, and I hope the recipients never put a stethoscope to a patient without maintaining asense of awe.”

If you would like to join your fellow graduates in this new alumni tradition and help a medicalstudent or students, you may send your $150 contribution for each instrument you wish todonate to the BUSM Alumni Association, 715 Albany Street, L-120, Boston, MA 02118, or you may also make your contribution online at www.bumc.bu.edu/medalumni and click on Make an Online Contribution. Please note that it is for the Stethoscope Program.

When David Rothbaum, MD ’82,was accepted to BUSM, the School selectednot only an excellent student and a dedicatedfuture alumnus, it also gained a family com-mitted to the institution.

Paul and Jean Rothbaum, David’s father and mother, quicklybecame involved in the School, joining the Parents Committeeand eventually becoming co-chairpersons, hosting BUSMevents in New York, and making generous contributions. “Wewere very happy that David was getting his medical degreefrom Boston University,” said Paul Rothbaum, who remainsjust as dedicated and committed to the School to this day.

The couple established a prize fund in obstetrics and gyne-cology in honor of their son and supported the John andHannah Sandson Student Revolving Loan Fund out of theirdeep respect for John Sandson, MD, dean of BUSM whenDavid attended. According to Mr. Rothbaum, it was his latewife who initiated their involvement in the Hubert Humphrey

Cancer Research Center at BUSM. He is currently on the National AdvisoryCommittee of the Humphrey Center and is also a member of the School’s Board of Visitors. There is a classroom in BUSM’s McNary Learning Center named in their honor to recognize their considerable generosity toward building the center.Among the many generous contributions to BUSM, the one that stands out is Paul’s loving tribute to his wife, the Jean Rothbaum Memorial Scholarship Fund. Morerecently, Paul Rothbaum has contributed to the Aram Chobanian Professorship Fund.

All three of Mr. Rothbaum’s sons are physicians. He attributes his childrens’ careerchoice to a strike at the Long Island Jewish Hospital when the three of them heededthe call for volunteers to keep the hospital operating. “They got a taste of hospitalwork, and it appealed to them,” he says.

Like his parents, David Rothbaum often offered his time and effort to help the School. As a medical student he volunteered for the Alumni Association annual fundphonathons to raise money. When he graduated, he immediately joined the Dean’sClub, the giving society initiated to encourage and recognize leadership giving to theSchool of Medicine. In the 25 years since his graduation, he has continued his annualDean’s Club contribution and now joins his parents as a member of the Chester S.Keefer, MD Society. The Keefer Society recognizes cumulative giving of more than$50,000 to BUSM.

In 1986, Rothbaum opened his ob/gyn practice in Great Neck, New York, which nowincludes his brother. He is a clinical faculty member at Weill-Cornell Medical Schooland New York University School of Medicine, and is a fellow of the American Collegeof Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

He has served as his class agent, has continued as a phonathon volunteer, and was pres-ident of the Alumni Association and organizer of the Class of 1982 25th Reunion thispast year. In addition to supporting the School’s annual fund, David has contributed to the Sandson Student Revolving Loan Fund and the McNary Learning Center, andmost recently has joined the Adopt-A-Student program, pledging to support a medicalstudent over the course of his or her four years at BUSM.

He and his wife, Melanie, have five children. Much to David’s delight, their oldest son,Robert, is enrolled in the BUSM Seven-Year Program which combines the BA andMD degrees.

“It is clear that the outstanding philanthropy of Paul Rothbaum and his late wife, Jean, set the example for their son, David, who is truly following in his parents’ generousfootsteps,” said Dean Karen Antman, MD. “The Rothbaums’ gifts to the School havehelped countless students realize their dream of practicing medicine, and we look forward to their continued involvement as we go forward educating and training thenation’s next physicians.”

The Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery atBoston University School of Medicine has an illustrious and historic past.

In 1951, M. Stuart Strong, MD, chairman of BUSM’s Department of Otolaryngology,

accepted for training the first resident to graduate from the program, Charles Vaughan.

For more than thirty years, Drs. Strong and Vaughan worked closely together to build

a department that eventually became world renowned.

They were the first physicians to employ the use of the laser in otolaryngology surgery,

thus ushering in the era of laser surgery and thrusting Boston University to the fore-

front of technical innovation. They were exciting and passionate educators who

enticed more than one hundred BUSM students to choose careers in otolaryngology,

and many of those former BUSM students have gone on to become leaders in

otolaryngology throughout the world.

Gerald B. Healy, MD ’67, president-elect of the American College of Surgeons, is

one of the many BUSM students who chose to become an otolaryngologist and who

completed his residency training in otolaryngology under the tutelage of Drs. Strong

and Vaughan.

“Dr. Strong’s and Dr. Vaughan’s fascination with the work they were doing and their

propensity to be innovators and educators created within the department a rare sense

of enthusiasm and momentum,” says Kenneth Grundfast, MD, FACS, FAAP, professor

and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at

Boston University School of Medicine. “Their names are synonymous with excellence

and innovation in our field.”

And Grundfast should know. As a resident at Boston City Hospital (now Boston

Medical Center), Grundfast trained under both Strong and Vaughan. Since becoming

chair of the department, Grundfast has worked on creating the M. Stuart Strong and

Charles W. Vaughan Professorship in Otolaryngology. “I am thankful for what my

mentors did for me and I want to contribute in a way that can strengthen the School

of Medicine so that others can derive the benefits that I received from those who were

part of the BUSM faculty,” says Grundfast.

To date, more than $2.3 million, including a significant estate commitment, has

been raised toward the $2.5 million required to establish the professorship. “I want

to see the names of these two great otolaryngologists honored in perpetuity, never to

be forgotten by future generations of students and residents,” contin-

ues Grundfast, whose other philanthropic interests include Boston

Medical Center, the State University of New York—Syracuse Medical

School from which he graduated, and various Jewish organizations.

“Having a strong faculty is what attracts the best and brightest stu-

dents and residents to the School of Medicine and BMC,” states

Grundfast. “Contributing now is an investment in these two institu-

tions that are tightly linked and that share lofty goals for future gen-

erations of medical practitioners.”

“Both Dr. Strong and Dr. Vaughan helped to revolutionize the way

people teach and practice otolaryngology,” says BUSM Dean Karen

Antman. “A professorship in their names will ensure that these two

medical pioneers are remembered for their many contributions to

science.”

“She dedicated her life not only to African-Americans through civil rights,

but also as a pioneer for women in medicine.”

Rachel Boone Keith, MD ’49, the daughter of missionaries, dedicated her life to her family, her patients, and her community. At a time whenwomen in medicine were uncommon, let alone African-American women, she was widely known for her advocacy for her patients, as well as the personal-ized attention and care she gave them and her service as a mentor to others in the medical community.

Paying tribute to her long medical career and in appreciation for the opportunity provided to her by BUSM, Dr. Keith’s family initiated a prize fund in her honor at BUSM. On the occasion of her death in January 2007, through the generosity of her husband, daughters, and friends, the fund wasexpanded to provide scholarship support for fourth-year students (with a preference for African-American women) who excel in their clinical performance.

An internist in private practice in Detroit, Michigan, she was committed to civil rights. “She was one of the first ladies of civil rights and one of the mostrespected doctors in the state,” said Melvin Hollowell, general counsel of the Detroit branch of the NAACP. “She dedicated her life not only to African-Americans through civil rights, but also as a pioneer for women in medicine.”

In 1998, she was honored by BUSM with a special award as a woman of outstanding achievement, and she received an honorary degree from BU as part of the School’s sesquicentennial celebration.

“As one of the first African-American female physicians in the city, she overcame professional obstacles without self-importanceand succeeded in raising a family who adored her abundant goodness, strength, and grace,” said her husband, Federal Court Judge Damon Keith. “Her tendency to promote tolerance was designed to foster the higher purpose of peace and unity.”

“At BUSM we are proud of our long history of educating women and minorities,” said Dean Karen Antman, MD. “And withthe support of people like the Keith family and friends, we will continue this outstanding tradition.”

Donations to the Rachel Boone Keith Fund may be sent to: BUSM Office of Development, 715 Albany Street, L-319, Boston, MA 02118.

When the BUSM Student Committee on Medical School Affairs(SCOMSA) learned that the Outreach Van Project (OVP) was losing one of its fundingsources, the committee, which sponsors an annual winter semi-formal for students, decided to use the proceeds from the sale of tickets to the event to help the OVP.

The OVP is a completely student-run organization whose mission is to fulfill the unmetneeds of the medically underserved populations in the greater Boston area. These includethe homeless, migrant workers, immigrants, and others with little or no access to healthcare. The project also offers students the opportunity to gain experience and develop skillsin community outreach.

The donation from the event’s ticket sales totaled $5,000. “The Outreach Van Project isone of the most admirable organizations at our School and, as we are all painfully aware, the problem of homelessness is not going away any time soon,” says David Annas ’07, aformer clothing chair for OVP and a member of the Senior Committee. “We hope thatthis donation will help them in their mission to provide food, clothing, toiletries, and medical services to the homeless and indigent population of Boston.”

“We are tremendously grateful to the BUSM students who have stepped up to cover ourfunding gap, in addition to all of the hours they have volunteered with us,” says SaharAminipour, Outreach Van Project Coordinator.

Elementary and Middle School Students RaiseFunds for BUSM’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center

“One of the striking things about my visit to the school was when I asked the

students to raise their hands if they had someone close to them with Alzheimer’s

disease. One half of the students put their hands up.”

With an estimated 5.1 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, this devastating neurological illness touches many families. Students in schools in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, decided to do something to help. They have been fundraising forthe past two years to support the research being done at the Alzheimer’s Disease Center at BUSM.

In addition to the $1,700 raised last year, members of the Laslie Family, representing the schools, recently presented a check for $3,341 from the schools’ “Crazy Hat” fundraiser to the Alzheimer’sDisease Advisory Board. The three Laslie girls’ grandfather, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, loved to wear hats, so the granddaughters inaugurated Crazy Hat Day at their schools, where everyoneincluding faculty and staff joined in. “It’s wonderful to see young people take action to have a direct impact on what we do to fight this disease,” said Robert Stern, PhD, associate professor ofneurology and co-director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical and Research Program at BUSM.

Stern, wearing his own crazy hat, spoke to the 1,000 students about the disease during the May 4,2007, event at the Gordon W. Mitchell Middle School in East Bridgewater. He recalls, “One of thestriking things about my visit to the school was when I asked the students to raise their hands if theyhad someone close to them with Alzheimer’s disease. One half of the students put their hands up.”

The goal of the Alzheimer’s Disease Center at BUSM is to help reduce the human and economic costs associated with Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of knowledgeand increasing awareness of the illness. The Alzheimer’s Disease Advisory Board, initiated in 2003, helps raise funds for Alzheimer’s disease research at BUSM through personal philanthropy, outreach, and volunteer efforts.

Cassie, Alexa, and Kandyse Laslie present a check to Robert C. Green, MD, co-director of theAlzheimer’s Disease Clinical and Research Program and professor of neurology, genetics and epidemiology; Carlos Kase, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology; CarmelaAbraham, PhD, professor of biochemistry and medicine; Karen Antman, MD, dean and provost;Michael Critelli, chairman of the Alzheimer’s Advisory Board and executive chairman of PitneyBowes; and Robert A. Stern, PhD, co-director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical and ResearchProgram and associate professor of neurology.

Planned Gifts help BUSM succeed today and tomorrowFor M. Douglass Poirier, MD ’76, making a planned gift was an easy decision.“I wanted to give something back to an institution that I care about, which for me is Boston University School of Medicine,” says Poirier.

Poirier chose to establish a charitable gift annuity at BUSM that provides him with a fixed annuity payment basedon his age at the time of the gift. A charitable gift annuity is also taken as a tax deduction in the year of the giftand provides tax-free income on a portion of the annuity payment.

This is not the first time that Poirier has decided to pitch in and help his Alma Mater. A graduate of the Six-YearProgram, Poirier is a past president of the BUSM Alumni Association, as well as a regular phonathon volunteer. He also served as the 25th Reunion organizer and spearheaded the establishment of the Class of 1976 ScholarshipFund. In addition, Poirier has supported the Student Village at Boston University and the athletics program.

“Charitable gift annuities are a good investment with a fair return. The great thing about them is that you avoid the anxieties of the stock market and have a guaranteed income for life,” states Poirier.

“Planned gifts provide income and tax benefits to donors while increasing the endowment of the School ofMedicine,” says Dean Karen Antman, MD. “These gifts allow the School of Medicine to better prepare and planfor future growth and expansion on our campus and in our profession.”

For more information on establishing a charitable gift annuity or other planned gift, please contact School of Medicine Associate VicePresident and Director of Development Lynn Hendricks at 617-638-4570 or Alumni Association Executive Director Barry Manuel,MD ’58, at 617-638-5154.

“One of our daughters is in herthird year at BUSM, and theother graduated in May. As parents, my husband, Alan, and I have witnessed firsthand theexcellence in medical education

provided by BUSM as our daughters transform fromeager college students to compassionate, skillful physicians. We are proud to support this outstanding institution.”

“Everyone at BUSM and on theBoard of Visitors is passionateabout educating physicians andsupporting medical research, and I am proud to be a part of that important tradition.”

“As a member of the Board ofVisitors, I have enjoyed the oppor-tunity to meet both faculty andstudents, and I was pleased thatmy contacts at Cognia Molecular

resulted in a contribution to the Genetics and GenomicsDepartment. Establishing and developing these contactsfor the School are important and one of the reasons thatI joined the board. Through my meetings with students,I have come to understand some of the unique challengesthey face. As a result, my wife and I decided to establishthe “Special Medical Needs Fund” to provide financialhelp for certain medical needs not covered by disabilityservices or student medical insurance. My involvementand ability to help support the School of Medicine havebeen very gratifying.”

ADRIENNE M. PENTA

“I will be forever grateful to thefaculty, staff, and patients who all contributed to my wonderfulexperience as a student at theSchool of Medicine. My donations

to the School enable today’s students to have a similarexperience, and I hope they too will be grateful andcontinue this spirit of philanthropy.”

ELIZABETH STENGELDirector, BUSM Office of Government Relations

“Over the many years that I’ve worked for BUSM, I havegiven annually—not because anyone made me feel it was expected, but rather because I felt a strong commitment to the special mission of the School in training physicians to care for poor, urban populations and providing health care access to all. I’ve felt espe-cially fortunate to work closely with Deans John Sandson and Aram Chobanian onissues to which I personally relate: the need to reduce medical student debts, the impor-tance of federal funding to continue the excellence of BUSM’s research enterprise, andthe understanding that the political process is necessary to achieving the School’s goals.”

“I consistently contribute to BUSM because I am forever grateful for the educational experience that I received. It is clear to me every day that the medical school prepared mewell for the ever-changing landscape of medicine. As a surgical residency program director,I review more than a thousand applications and interview dozens of applicants. The grad-uates from BUSM are more prepared than graduates from any other medical school—due to the diverse and carefully planned experiences provided to BUSM students. I owe my professional success to Boston University.”

“We feel that our BU medical education has been a major contributor to our accomplishments thus far in life. Further, we have had the opportunity to work with medical studentsfrom over a dozen medical schools, and we continue to note that BU students have superior clinical skills. For these reasons,we feel that it is our privilege, not only to give back to the

medical school that started our careers, but to provide our help to an institutionthat will continue to educate outstanding physicians.”
