reformer, the bright headgear which had become a proud symbol of India’s nationalism and

fight against foreign rule adorned the humble persona of the man who had been fighting all

his life for freedom from blindness of his people, leading to a self reliant and independent

life. The occasion was the awarding of the first ‘Pune Netra Seva National Award’ instituted

in honour and memory of Late G.M Shetty of Modern Cafe, Pune, a philanthropist who

supported social causes generously, by the Pune Seva Netra Pratisthan a unique and

1. Sankara Nethralaya’s service at Tirupati through

Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya

The Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya (SSSN) which was established in the year 2009 by

Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya Trust by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). This

center has screened more than 11,983 new patients and has performed 4,210 cataract

surgeries during the financial year 2018 -19 (FY 2017 -18: 11,642 new patients and

3,004 surgeries). This was a record year for our operations at SSSN, in terms of

surgeries performed in a year. Mission for Vision Trust is playing a major role in

mobilizing patients for free cataract surgeries at SSSN. Sankara Nethralaya is also

exploring the possibilities of having an exclusive Mobile Eye Surgical Unit for the State

of Andhra Pradesh, under the aegis of TTD. Discussions in this regard are progressing

well and we hope this project would be a reality before the next financial year.

2. Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya & Kamalnayan Bajaj

Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata, West Bengal:

Both our centers at Kolkata have grown further in its stature by catering to more

number of patients through their base hospitals and as well through community

outreach programs. These centers together have screened more than 1, 17,234 new

patients and performed 14,018 surgeries during the financial year 2018 -19. (FY 2017 -

18: more than 1, 05,207 new patients and 12,780 surgeries).

3. Sankara Nethralaya, Sricity, Tada, Andhra Pradesh:

Our center at Sri City, catering to the needs of industrial workers and also the needs of

the villagers living around this upcoming industrial town, has rendered services to

more than 6,555 patients and has performed 97 cataract surgeries during the financial

year 2018-19.

4. Suraj Sankara Nethralaya, Chetpet, Tiruvannamalai District,

Tamil Nadu:

Suraj Sankara Nethralaya, named in honor and as a token of gratitude to Shri Surajmal

Jain, a well-known philanthropist, champion of social causes, Chairman of Acharya

Shri Hasthi Aradhana Foundation (ASHA Foundation) and a long time well-wisher of

Sankara Nethralaya, who has most generously donated the premise housing the new

facility. Suraj SN assumes great importance as it would be dispensing world class eye

care in a semi urban region and serving a large number of indigent patients from the

neighboring villages, who do not have access to quality eye care.

The hospital collection crossed Rs. 200 crores for the first time. The number of free surgeries in the FY 2018-19 was 22810. Number of free surgeries as a percentage of total surgeries done was 36%. The Mobile Eye Surgery Units (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand), the brain child of Dr SS Badrinath, kept the flag of Sankara Nethralaya’s service to community flying high by performing 4520 totally free cataract surgeries in different villages across the 3 states.

The Bhumi puja for the new Community Hospital at St. Thomas Mount was conducted on 23rd April 2018. The new facility would have a fully equipped out-patient facility, 8 operation theaters and 140 beds dedicated to totally free surgeries and service. In a moment that captured the spirit of the day, special guest of the event Shri Iravatham Mahadevan expressed that if only he had been 10 years younger he would have visited every home in the locality to mobilize funds for the noble endeavour.

A close look at the inception, growth and 4 decades of service by Sankara Nethralaya would make it apparent that if something has been the consistent moving force for all the above, next only to the blessings of the Kanchi Acharyas, it is the boundless love to mankind, a strong sense of service, a no strings attached generosity and utmost faith in the institution exhibited by its donors and well wishers. It was a beautiful demonstration of this faith that was being showcased on the 20th of September 2018 in the small town of Chetpet in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, as the curtains went up on yet another major step in Sankara Nethralaya’s battle against blindness, in a semi urban area. The hospital, now named Suraj Sankara Nethralaya, was donated to Sankara Nethralaya, by Shri Surajmal Jain and his family. After required renovations the hospital started functioning from October 2018, serving the people from surrounding villages.

Two well qualified and trained ophthalmologists supported by a well-trained and

dedicated team of nursing, paramedical and administrative staff offer quality care for

all eye ailments. The new facility has fully equipped operation theaters, General

Ward beds and AC room. This facility was inaugurated by the district collector Shri K.S.

Kandasamy, IAS on 20th September 2018. This center has offered services to 3,358

new patients as Out patients and performed 91 Cataract surgeries during the financial

year 2018-19.

MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION

With clinical work, academics and research marching ahead with full speed, 2018-2019 was

a busy and productive year for the organization.

During the year, 78 Ophthalmologists got trained through the various Ophthalmology post

graduate and fellowship programs. This is a proud achievement of the institution and

reaffirmation of the Vision of Dr. Badrinath. Further, another 150 students graduated from

different programs including Optometry, Medical Laboratory Technology, Business

Administration, Nursing and Ophthalmic Dispensing. These are all indicators of the

robustness of Sankara Nethralaya’s academic activities.

Research work at Sankara Nethralaya has helped produce 2 Ph. D graduates this year. A

further 15 students are pursuing their Ph.D. Numerous projects in Optometry (Binocular

vision, Contact Lens and Myopia) and Ophthalmology (Dry eye, Keratoconus, Diabetic

Retinopathy and Glaucoma) are being carried out. A number of papers have been published

on the research outcome in peer reviewed Indian and International journals.

REACH – a school screening project supported by Orbis was completed this year. The 3-year

project helped to screen 3 lakh school children studying in Corporation and government

aided schools across Kanchipuram, Chennai and Tiruvallur districts. The unique feature of

the screening was inclusion of Binocular Vision Screening – the first of its kind in the world.

5% of the children required spectacles which were distributed through the project.

2018-19 was an impactful year for Sankara Nethralaya. Global projects involving Artificial

Intelligence were started at the Institution in the fields of Diabetic Retinopathy and

Glaucoma. The school screening program has received an extension of 3 more years which

would help to revisit the districts and include more children under the program. Tata Trusts

have extended another 3 years of support for the Mobile Eye Surgery Project in Jharkhand on

seeing the impact the program is having on the ground. Our ophthalmologists and

optometrists have represented Sankara Nethralaya in National and Global Forum with

distinction. A new centre was added to the Organisation and a new Community hospital is

under construction. The vision of Dr Badrinath is not only deep-rooted in the Institution but

is urging the next generation to carry forward the philosophy of the hospital.

HUMAN RELATIONS:

The Founder, Dr. S. S. Badrinath and Dr Vasanthi Badrinath are the real force behind this

great institution, continuously guiding and monitoring the progress of the institution in

every sphere. Their concerted actions in the continuous development of Consultants and

their professional management style with succession plans have started yielding results. Dr

Girish S. Rao, Medical Director – Administration & Vice-President, MRF has moved

comfortably into the role of heading the administration of the hospital under the guidance

of Dr. S. S. Badrinath.

With the support of Chairman Emeritus and the Administration team, he is working on managing the hospital functions. The Vice Chairman, Dr. T. S. Surendran, Medical Directors / Senior Consultants Dr. Prema Padmanabhan, Dr. Pramod S. Bhende and Dr. L. Vijaya, Dr. J. Biswas all share a common vision as that of the Founder, Dr. S. S. Badrinath, which helps to continue the successful functioning of the Organisation.

Quality administrative supervision and management was provided by Dr. K. S. Vasan for the year 2018-19 who guided the operation over the past decade and improved the operation three folds. He now moves over as advisor projects. Mr. V. Vaidyanathan who is associated with the organization since inception has taken over as the President of the Foundation and has taken over the task of guiding the organization now. He is ably assisted by Mr. G. Ramachandran Hony. Secretary, Mr. N. Sugalchand Jain, Hony.Treasurer and other board members of the foundation besides Ms. Akila Ganesan, Director Administration and Ms Susila Girisan, DGM – Finance.

Our entire para medical and administrative staffs are an important link between the patients and the institution. They ensure the smooth functioning of the Organization. Regular training classes are being held to some of these groups.

I record with gratitude the support of the dedicated Board of Management who despite their other priorities have always come forward to advise the Institution whenever needed even at very short notices.

Our auditors, since the beginning of this institution, M/s S. Viswanathan & co. are carrying out their assignment as a service to a non-for-profit organization for a token compensation. I record with appreciation the personal involvement of the partners Mr. C. N. Ramachandran and Mr. Chella Srinivasan. The internal auditors Mr. S. A. Bhatt are also very dedicated in their service to us. I thank them for their personal involvement in our case.

SWAN, the women auxiliary wing of our organization is continuing their good service to Sankara Nethralaya. Their contributions to the welfare of indigent patients treated at Nethralaya are praise worthy. I salute these dedicated ladies guided by Ms. Surekha Ben, Mrs. Appukutty, Mrs. Haridas and many more.

Our bankers, HDFC and SBI, are very considerate in taking up our requests and delivering their service very promptly to us. I thank them for their support.

At this juncture, I need to extend my sincere gratitude to our Major Donors during this financial year – Clearing Corporation of India, HDB Financial Services, HT Parekh Foundation, Tata Trusts, Computer Age Management Services Private Limited, Bhabani Pigments Private Limited, Binaguri Tea Company Private Limited and the TVS Group. They have supported the Community Services of Sankara Nethralaya through large grants and donations. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the numerous other donors who have been the pillars of support for our work.

I thank the following partners for our community work for their help in taking care of our indigent patients - Mission for Vision, Sri Shridi Sai Trust, Sri Sai Darshan Trust and Lions Club.

debate and discuss the challenges faced by the ocular surface of the eye and Keratoprosthesis,

conducted from the 27th to 29th of July 2018 had all the elements that make a Sankara Nethralaya

If the 3 day, high power conference attended by national and international expertson the field from

the world over went into the depth of the ocular surface, unravelling new facts, questioning old

theories, throwing light on new technology, sharing new approaches and real time experience through

case studies, the valedictory function held at the packed to capacity Ball Room of The Taj Coramandel

on 29th of July 2018,was a giant step towards creating awareness on the gravity of the issue among the

political dispensation, seeking political will, mandate and legislation, to give teeth to preventive

measures discussed in the meet

against ocular surface disorders especially those caused by human misconduct and folly (caused by

external factors like accident, careless handling of hazardous substances and planned assaults like

acid attacks), a multi layered approach to a multilayered challenge
