[Mario Giacomelli (1925-20 00)]Walking with Aldrin on the surface of the MoonSenigallia, July 1969

Vintage Agfacolor silver print, 128x90 mm, from the studio of Italian artistMario Giacomelli.

A conceptual amateur cropping from the celebrated Italian lanscapephotographer’s archive. Only the Agfa watermark indicates it cannot be anoriginal NASA print, supposed to be only on US Kodak papers.

A Man on the Moon is one of the most famous photographs of the 20thCentury : Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin walks on the surface of the moonnear the leg of the lunar module Eagle. Apollo 11 Commander NeilArmstrong took this photograph with a 70mm lunar surface camera.Armstrong and Aldrin explored the Sea of Tranquility for two and a halfhours while crewmate Michael Collins orbited above in the commandmodule Columbia.

There has been much speculation about Aldrin's desire at the time to be thefirst astronaut to walk on the Moon on July 21, 1969. According to differentNASA accounts, he had originally been proposed as the first to step ontothe Moon's surface, but due to the physical positioning of the astronautsinside the compact lunar landing module, it was easier for the commander,Neil Armstrong, to be the first to exit the spacecraft.

Aldrin, a Presbyterian, was the first person to hold a religious ceremony onthe Moon.
