FIVE STAGES
W elcome to the Berkshire Theatre Group! Now in our second year combining the strengths of the Berkshire Theatre Festival and The Colonial Theatre,
we are pleased to present a diverse and rich array of performances across five stages (including one lobby which offers the high-energy music of The Garage). We are stronger together, enabling us to produce incredible theatre productions, present first-class entertainment, and offer mind-expanding educational opportunities for our school-based programs. All of this we do in a deliberate effort to provide access for everyone in our community and simultaneously contribute to the economic engine of Berkshire County.
We are so glad you are here and thank you for your support. This great theatre company and community organization is only made possible with the support of people like you. Thanks for joining us and enjoy the show!

BEGINNING MAY 26, 2012
Pictured: Dick Ziter, Julian Whitley and Larry Vaber
In 2011, we lost two of our greatest caretakers. We honored the remarkable
legacy of Jack Fitzpatrick with A Christmas Carol which made the move to Pittsfield and opened at the Colonial in December, 2011. With James and Kim Taylor and Eric Hill leading the cast of community members in this great tale of giving we were reminded nightly of the many treasures bestowed on us all by Senator Fitzpatrick. The Berkshires will miss this remarkable man who enriched all of our lives.
We dedicate our summer 2012 season of plays to the memory of Larry Vaber, whose gentility and loving ways will forever be remembered by us all. His dedication to our theatre led the way to the building of our Unicorn theatre. Generations of artists will continue to find their paths to artistic greatness on the Larry Vaber Stage.
We will miss them both and are stronger for their care.

enrichment and entertainment that we are here—you play the main role in Berkshire Theatre Group! Whether you are sitting in the glorious Colonial, enjoying a refreshment and listening to fabulous music in the Garage, spreading a blanket as Pinocchio peaks through the trees at the Mount, finding a perfect seat at our intimate Unicorn theatre or settling into our historic Fitzpatrick Main Stage for a great play—we want you to enjoy and come back. It is through your attendance and support that these theatres will be here for generations to come. Enjoy the show and thank you for being a part of all we do.

Each year, Berkshire Theatre Group reaches over 100,000 arts lovers through our events, both
produced and presented, on our five stages in the Berkshires. Additionally, we provide opportunities to over 10,000 students through our educational and pre-professional programming. We cannot survive on ticket sales alone. It is only through the generosity of our supporters that we are able to continue these vital programs year after year. There are so many
ways that you can be a part of our ongoing efforts. Here are just a few:
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is the simplest way to be a part of what we do. By making an annual contribution of $50 or more, you ensure that Berkshire Theatre Group can continue to produce and present the finest events and bring much needed arts outreach opportunities to children throughout Berkshire County. In exchange for your annual gift, you are listed in this program and receive special member benefits based on the level of your gift.
BENEFACTORS CIRCLE/ENCORE SOCIETY
Our most generous members, those who give $1,000 or more per year, join our Benefactors Circle/Encore Society. At this level you receive special recognition in our program, as well as ticket discounts, parking passes, behind-the-scenes tours and invitations to special events throughout the year.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
Now is the time to honor a loved one, celebrate a “milestone” birthday or anniversary, give a memorable graduation gift, or make a lasting tribute. A wide variety of naming opportunities are available at our Stockbridge campus, from engraved stone pavers on the Unicorn Patio ($250), Adirondack Chairs on the lawn ($1,000) or wooden benches for “conversation areas” adjacent to the Walkway ($2,000). The Colonial invites you to take your place amidst its rich living history by naming a seat (starting at $1,000). You may even choose to plant a tree or underwrite aspects of our landscape plan as a remembrance.
RENT OUR THEATRES
Rent our theatres for any of your special events! For conferences, meetings, performances, parties or weddings, Berkshire Theatre Group has the perfect space available for your next occasion. For more information contact Noah Weiss at (413)-448-8084 ext. 18.

Education programs are a fundamental component of Berkshire Theatre Group’s mission to serve our
community and the next generation of artists. Study after study concludes that children who are introduced to the arts at a young age and given a chance to participate are more successful throughout their lives. BTG is proud to provide a multitude of arts outreach opportunities for students throughout the Berkshires and beyond.
BTG PLAYS!
BTG’s year-round Educational Program, has been providing arts programs in Berkshire County schools for over 25 years. Through in-school residency programs,
vacation camps, after school classes, and the annual community production, local students have explored the art of theatre and shared their individual voices and creativity. These programs have considerably expanded since inception, impacting 100 students in the beginning and currently serving nearly 10,000 annually.
This past fall marked the 6th Annual Berkshire Theatre Group’s Children’s Theatre production. Over 125 children grades 3 and up, from 35 school districts throughout Berkshire County participated in The Wizard of Oz at The Colonial.
PERFORMING ARTS FOR SCHOOLS
Affordable school field trips to Berkshire Theatre Group’s theatres allow students to experience diverse, educational and entertaining programs that reinforce classroom curriculum while fostering an understanding of and appreciation for the performing arts.
EDUCATION
49 | www.BerkshireTheatreGroup.org
Each year, events are scheduled specifically with local area school children in mind and offer an array of educational entertainment ranging from The Magic School Bus Live! A Climate Challenge to Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical to the literary classic Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
SUMMER PERFORMANCE TRAINING APPRENTICE PROGRAM
Berkshire Theatre Group has a strong commitment to investing in the next generation of theatre artists. BTG’s highly regarded Summer
Performance Training Apprentice Program, founded in 1929 and boasting past participants such as Katharine Hepburn and Al Pacino, offers 25 students, from all over the country, a multifaceted approach to actor training that combines a strong emphasis on movement and vocal technique. The uniqueness of the program lies in BTG’s fundamental belief that theatre succeeds through ensemble work. As a result, apprentices are vital members of the BTG community, performing on at least one of our many stages, taking classes each day and assisting in a variety of departments. Most significant is the program’s daily training, the Suzuki Method of Actor Training, complemented by master workshop classes taught by visiting theatre professionals.

ASSISTANTSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
Each summer Berkshire Theatre Group brings in students from across the country to work with our professional actors, directors and designers. Berkshire Theatre Group offers Assistantships in Directing, Design, Stage Management, and Technical Direction. BTG also offers Production and Administrative Internships. Each intern and assistant is a crucial part of the creation and operation of the festival from running professional shows, to building sets and costumes, to house managing and working in our marketing and development departments.
YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD
As part of BTG’s ongoing effort to support children’s interest in the arts, we have started a Youth Advisory Board. This Board, which features high school students from across the county, meets periodically to discuss upcoming events, makes suggestions for programming to young audiences and assists with
activities at the theatres, including distribution of information, creation of videos and social media networking.

AWARDS &SCHOLARSHIPS
THE RICHIE DUPONT AWARD
The Richie duPont Award was started in memory of the talented young actor, Richie duPont, who was a part of the Berkshire
Theatre Group community, where he performed in two productions on the Fitzpatrick Main Stage. To honor his memory, the fund was established in 2005 to enable children to pursue their dreams of being on stage and afford them the opportunity to attend one of the
BTG PLAYS! camp sessions.
THE BETSEY MCKEARNAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Betsey McKearnan Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to apprentices
entering BTG’s Training Program each summer, in addition to two full apprenticeship scholarships. The Margaret Brenman Gibson Scholarship, in memory of Ms. Gibson the noted psychologist, teacher, writer and social activist, is awarded to a deserving female apprentice; while the Wally Harper Award, in memory of the pianist, composer and musical director, is offered to an apprentice with strong musical theatre skills.
PERFORMING ARTS FOR SCHOOLS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Performing Arts for Schools Program is so important to our community that donors have stepped forward to guarantee that all students, regardless of
financial situation, have access to this creativity-building resource.
Ruth & Nicholas Boraski established an endowment gift, the income from which will be used to provide scholarships for student tickets. Linda O’Connell established a multi-year fund to annually underwrite programming. Nancy Vale established a charitable remainder trust in the name of her late husband Michael Vale to provide scholarships for student tickets.

• Founded – 1903, The Colonial Theatre • Founded – 1928, Berkshire Theatre Festival• Merged 2010
OUR HISTORY
On September 28, 1903 The Colonial Theatre opened, designed by J. B. McElfatrick. McElfatrick designed
220 theaters in total, 39 of which were on Broadway. The Colonial was built in five and a half months and boasted pristine acoustics and classic gilded age architecture.
In 1912 the Colonial Players were founded. They were an in-house company that produced weekly shows from May through October. Edith Luckett, Ronald Reagan’s mother-in-law, was the original star of the Players. Will
Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, Eubie Blake, Al Jolson, Lillian Russell, William Gillette, Billy Burke, George M. Cohan and many others performed on the Colonial stage.
In 1928 Berkshire Theatre Festival was founded. The Berkshire Playhouse opened at the dismantled and then relocated Stockbridge Casino, built in 1887 and designed by famed architect Stanford White. The Berkshire Playhouse is the third oldest theatre in the United States. The theatre was officially born as soon as the magnificent Eva LaGalliene stepped onto the stage in The Cradle Song. Years later her words of inspiration still provide guidance: “the theatre is a great force capable of spreading beauty and understanding.”
In 1934 the Colonial closed due to the depression.
In 1937 the Colonial reopened as a movie house.
In 1951 the Colonial closed again due to the rise of TV and the decline of touring theatrical companies.
In 1952, the Colonial was put up for auction. Although George Miller was the lowest bidder, he wanted to save the building rather than demolish it, and thus Miller Art Supply moved into The Colonial.
In 1976, The Berkshire Theatre Festival’s playhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1994 Friends of the Colonial Theatre Restoration was formed by Bob Boland.

In 1996 the Unicorn stage was reopened after a lengthy renovation and became BTF’s official second stage. Since the beginning, BTF has had a focus on training. Early acting apprentices renovated a space in the old Mellon Barn to rehearse and perform scenes and monologues. By the 1980’s this Unicorn Theatre became a home for new and experimental work.
In 1998 over 10,000 people came to see First Lady Hilary Clinton dedicate The Colonial Theatre as a National Historic Treasure.
In 2006 The Colonial reopened after a $21 million restoration.
In 2010 Berkshire Theatre Group was created from the merger of The Colonial Theatre and Berkshire Theatre Festival.
In 2011 Berkshire Theatre Group built the Neil Ellenoff Stage outdoors at The Mount in Lenox. The glorious Dell sets the stage for evenings of family enchantment.
In 2011 Berkshire Theatre Group opened The Garage, located in the lobby of the Colonial. Its name pays homage to its former owner, Berkshire Auto Co. Garage. This newly developed venue, complete with stage, lights and sound system, is BTG’s dedicated venue for local and regional music performers.
As Kate Maguire, Artistic Director, CEO, said “The BTF and The Colonial share the distinction of having provided an artistic home for the Lunts and the Barrymores; each are registered as National Historic Landmarks. The
combined stories of these theatres provide a mirror of insight to the American Theatre– indeed they represent the strength of the American story and capture the essence of our understanding that the arts provide doorways to growth and windows to all that lies in the human heart.”Pictured Clockwise: Berkshire Playhouse Box office, 1931; Hillary Clinton and Bob Boland in The Colonial Theatre; Interior of The Colonial Theatre; Stockbridge Casino

"...The company's impulse to air issues--moral, social and political--thrills (me.) I like seeing the power of theater used to connect with other things in the world. It makes clear that art is part of life." Andrew Joffe---actor/director/playwright
One of America’s foremost playwrights, Inge’s characters find themselves victimized by their need for love as they search for identity. This collection of his work portrays real people who are contending with lives of undefined fear. His seemingly mundane conversations are deceptively insightful and poetic.
With dialogue that is brisk, brittle, funny and lethally accurate, two couples act out three different versions of the same disastrous dinner party. Reza contrasts man’s ability to map the outermost reaches of the universe with his total inability to respond rationally to the most trivial domestic mishap.

This critically acclaimed, award-winning evening of one-act comedies combines humor, intellect, and piercing satire. The writing is not only very funny, it excites the brain and tickles the heart. You’ll ponder over Ives’ mordant wit as you laugh your way through his comic lunacy.
Five aging practitioners of the oldest profession are faced with a diminishing clientele, increased competition for their niche market, and aching joints. With wit, compassion, and humor, they struggle to find and learn new tricks as they fight to stay in the Life.
With humor and empathy, the play explores the conflict between an established older priest and an impassioned young seminarian who challenges the validity of his well-routined regimen. Their relationship, fraught with conflict, brings each to a recognition of his own frailties and strengths.

The S&P 500 Index (S&P) has been used as a comparative benchmark because the goal of the above strategy was to provide equity-like returns. The S&P is one of theworld’s most recognized indexes by investors and the investment industry for the equity market. The S&P, however, is not a managed portfolio and is not subject toadvisory fees or trading costs. Investors cannot invest directly in the S&P 500 Index. The S&P returns also reflect the reinvestment of dividends. Berkshire Money Managementis aware of the benchmark comparison guidelines set forward in the SEC Clover No-Action Letter (1986) and compares clients’ performance results to a benchmark or acombination of benchmarks most closely resembling clients’ actual portfolio holdings. However, investors should be aware that the referenced benchmark funds mayhave a different composition, volatility, risk, investment philosophy, holding times, and/or other investment-related factors that may affect the benchmark funds’ ultimateperformance results. Therefore, an investor’s individual results may vary significantly from the benchmark’s performance. All indicated stock market calls and associatedcommentary are that of Allen Harris & Berkshire Money Management and have no relationship to NDR/MDR.

“By mid-year (up to possibly August), however, stocks may nolonger tolerate the global uptrend of bond (i.e. Treasury) yields.Currently, with optimism already high (a contrarian bearishindicator) and valuations stretched, a peak could be expected.Going longer-term, any sell-off later in 2011 would be followedby rallying into 2012.”
August 14, 2011 (buy)
“It appears likely that we have seen the selling climax and thestart of a bottoming process.”
