The comeback trail for singer Chad Borja is full of exciting possibilities, judging from the kind of music he performed last week at 19 East in Sucat, Parañaque.

Backed by an eight-piece band, Borja spiced up his act with doses of swinging jazz, funk, R&B, rock and good old pop in a repertoire that covered Frank Sinatra standards, Van Morrison, Queen, Tower of

Power, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF), Van Halen, Blood, Sweat and Tears—which had the audience looking at each other and smiling like they just discovered the fountain of youth.

But Borja also obliged with an original, “Kung Ako Lang Sana” (a track from his overlooked 1997 album “Show Me the Way”), and his newly recorded version of “Yakap,” a 1970s hit by Junior—indicating that he’s ready to plunge back into the pop mainstream.

The band, an indispensable part of Borja’s current incarnation, was a blast of funky exuberance. The horn section,

composed of Mike Guevarra (sax), Romy Francisco (trumpet) and Ronnie Marqueses (trombone), blew away the worries of the day with its swaying melodies and cathartic solos.

Guitarist Noel Santiago was in a class of his own, cranking out street-wise riffs while handling the vocals on “Saturday in the Park.”

After hearing their superb renditions of “Moondance,” “You Can’t Fall Up” and “Diggin’ on James Brown,” it would be a

sin to miss Borja and his band the next time around.

Paolo’s musical journey was considered to be accidental. It seemed that he was at the exact place

and time when people were looking for something fresh in the music scene. Before doing anything

that has to do with music, he traveled the world, worked odd jobs and even thought that he would

end up working in the corporate jungle for the rest of his existence.

However, the love for music has been there at a very young age. He listened to the works of The

Beatles, James Taylor , America and Bread. He taught himself to play the guitar and fell in love with

it. Eventually, he ended up playing for the community church choir, small gatherings and even for

birthdays and weddings.

In 2003, while playing for a wedding, he was approached by a very popular radio DJ named Joe

D’Mango. He offered him a 30-minute slot at his radio station to do live covers of popular songs. It

became an instant hit and paved the way to do bigger venues, international tours and numerous

albums. He was popularly known as “mister acoustic” because of his musical style and has already

sold platinum and gold albums, worked with the best musicians in the Philippines and even opened

for international acts such as Jason Mraz and Duncan Sheik.

The Groomsmen is an all-male classical pop crossover vocal group composed of four individuals with totally different professional backgrounds:

R&B vocalist Mark Calimlim is a real estate professional and the lead vocalist of DQ Acoustic. Kits Falcis is a music graduate, teacher, and opera singer. LA Saludez, the group’s Music Director, is a grade school teacher, a private painting tutor and a choir conductor. Last to join the group is BTE’s managing director, Bien Rivera, a former Investment Banker and event professional.

Initially formed to accommodate a request for an all-male ensemble to sing at the Bridal March of a former colleague of Bien Rivera, the boys, after getting astonishing reviews from their performance, decided to keep the group and further develop their craft. Starting with songs by Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and other notable cross over artists, Groomsmen has managed to increase it’s repertoire to extend beyond wedding songs.

QUARTETS

A quartet is a musical ensemble of four players. The most common combination is a

classical string quartet – usually two violin players, a violist and a cellist – or a piece

written to be performed by such a group. The string quartet is one of the most

prominent chamber ensembles in classical music, with most major composers, from

the late 18th century onwards, writing string quartets.

Through the years, the quartet has evolved to other possible combinations. In the

Philippines alone, a more common combination is a violinist, a cellist, a keyboardist

and a singer. Some would even combine the group with a flutist or a brass

instrumentalist such as a French horn player or even a trumpet player.

Black Tie Entertainment is home to some of the country’s finest quartets such as the Manila

String Ensemble and the Manila String Machine. Last year, we launched DQ acoustic

-- an acoustic jazz quartet which plays jazz standards that appeal to a younger and

more hip audience.

This year BTE is launching its newest quartet—the Dynasty Strings which is composed of

highly skilled, classically trained string players. The group will be performing popular

classical songs, jazz standards and its main and most unique quality—modern hits

such as songs by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and the like.

Classic unlimited is one of the most in demand string

ensembles in the wedding music industry. Leading the

group is the renowned Violinist Jemay Dadap. A former

member of the now defunct, San Miguel Philharmonic

Orchestra, Jemay has led the group in various corporate

and social events. He is also noted to be one of the few

professional electric violinist in the country today.

Jeanne Marcelle Velasco-Vicars

Jeanne is the daughter of lyric tenor Noel Velasco and coloratura soprano Zonia Elvas-Velasco. Jeanne’s choral training started at the age of 9 when she joined her brother and two sisters in the University of the Philippines Cherubims and Seraphims under Dr. Flora Zarco-Rivera. Jeanne credits Aileen Espinosa-Cura, Joel Navarro, Jonathan Macarambon, Celine Valdes-Fabella, Zonia Elvas-Velasco and Noel Velasco for her voice training.

Her teaching technique on the other hand is greatly influenced by Eudenice Palaruan, Jonathan Velasco, and Prof. Carmencita Arambulo, pioneer of the Suzuki Method in the Philippines.

As Voice Instructor at Becky Aguila’s Talent Agency, Jeanne is also the voice coach of some GMA Artists as well – Jennylyn Mercado, Ella Guevarra, and Jade Lopez, to name a few.

In 1994, a group composed of young and talented instrumentalists formed a string quartet. As

demand for performances increased, they decided to invite more musicians who share the same

passion for chamber music, thus the birth of The Manila String Ensemble. Most of the members

came from the former Manila Chamber Orchestra, Manila Symphony Orchestra and The San Miguel

Philharmonic Orchestra. Each member has embarked on a career in either the music teaching

profession in institutions such as the University of the Philippines College of Music and the St.

Scholastica's College of Music, or have attended prestigious music workshops abroad in the pursuit

of further honing their crafts. Two of its members earned their Master's Degree in Music at the San

Francisco State University (Gina Medina) and at the Winthrop University (Mayos Esmilla). Noted

clients include The Malacanang Palace, the Consular office of the United States, the Australian

Embassy, The Chinese Embassy, The German Club, Sen. Jambie Madrigal's wedding, Bea Zobel Jr. the

Friends of CCP, The Metropolitan Museum, The Macau Tourist Government Office, PLDT and

recently the wedding of broadcaster Ms. Bernadette Sembrano and Vice Mayor Orange Aguinaldo

in June 12, 2008.

and Jose in a mission to continue the legacy of their

father, the late Joselito San Juan Sr.--the man behind

LSJ Strings and Impressarios Strings (Circa 70).

From a family of professional musicians in the last five

decades, the San Juan’s have been performing in
