1
A n aura of reflection and expectation enveloped the campus as we began the 2014–15 academic year with the sesquicentennial celebration of our founding on
the horizon. The backdrop of 150 years of providing access and opportunity in higher education framed a full slate of events throughout 2015. It also guided our expanding efforts to advance an agenda of transformation and innovation to secure the future of Bowie State University.
Looking back inspired us to push forward. The future began to take shape before our eyes as construction of a new building for natural sciences, mathematics and nursing got underway. This state-of-the-art science facility will change the landscape of the campus and significantly enhance our ability to compete for top students and faculty to join those who already make Bowie State University a very special place.
I am pleased to share just a few examples of the innovation and commitment to excellence that we see every day across the university, like the expanding student entrepreneurship initiatives and curriculum enhancements in cybersecurity education. In this annual report you will read about our faculty and students who are earning distinctive recognitions from
prestigious organizations and taking a seat at the table with local and national leaders to help address the critical issues of our time.
The Founders Day Awards Gala set the stage to recognize the growing engagement of alumni and friends throughout the year. It is particularly gratifying to note the achievements of our alumni and their commitment to advancing the legacy of Bowie State University.

When preparing for their future careers, some students choose to create their own path.
Through collaborative efforts with its partners, the Entrepreneurship Academy aims to nurture student entrepreneurs and prepare them for local and regional business plan competitions, in the hopes that they will later join the Bowie Business Innovation Center (Bowie BIC), the regional business incubator also located at Bowie State.
E ntrepreneurship education at Bowie State got a boost in October 2014 with the opening of a Student Business Hatchery, an initiative of the Bowie State
Entrepreneurship Academy to support students looking to start a business and connect them with expert coaches. Budding student entrepreneurs can now turn their ideas into business plans and enter the Entrepreneurship Academy’s Business Idea Competition for the chance to join the business incubator.
The top three winners of the spring 2014 competition won seed money and got to move into new office space in the Student Business Hatchery to further develop their business ideas. They also had access to coaching from the Entrepreneurship Academy’s advisory council, composed of local entrepre neurs, Bowie State faculty, company presidents, and other business professionals.
The College of Business started the Entrepreneurship Academy in 2013 to provide a pathway of practical learning opportunities to help college and high school students, especially those from at-risk communities, establish and develop their own businesses. Under the direction of Executive Director and Assistant Professor Minnette Bumpus, the academy hosted a summer entrepreneurship camp for high school students for the first time in 2014.

The ability to understand and appreciate cultural differences goes a long way in providing effective care in the field of social work.
Dr. André Stevenson, chair of the Department of Social Work, wanted to give students more opportunities to learn those qualities in the context
of a global environment and, at the same time, develop the skills to work in cross-cultural settings.
Together, Dr. Stevenson and co-coordinator Ellen Livingston have led the Global Learning Visits program, implemented to hone social work students’ cultural knowledge and awareness through international travel, so they can be better equipped to address the needs and issues in the communities they serve. There are also plans to expand the curriculum to include an elective course focused on international social work.
The department has sent groups to four countries: Munich, Germany; Havana, Cuba; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Maraisburg, South Africa, located in the Gauteng province where Johannesburg is the capital. The two- to three-week
learning trips for students, and sometimes faculty, were developed in partnership with the University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale, University of Connecticut, and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). All but the Cuba trip were open only to social work students.
The groups visited community organizations working on social issues, heard from local experts about the countries’ culture and government, toured important cultural landmarks or attended an accelerated course on economic and political human rights. Some students participated alongside community members in hands-on service, like helping South African social workers to prepare care plans and social activities for children and adults with AIDS. Some even earned course credits.
For students like Kiara Howard, who traveled to both Cuba and South Africa, participating in Global Learning Visits equipped her to become a better social worker and understand cultures through immersion. “Social work is about dealing with different types of people and you are able to relate to them more if you are able to get an idea of where they come from,” she said. “I feel like it’s helped me become more culturally competent.”

As the nation faces a shortage of well-trained cybersecurity professionals, Bowie State University is meeting the need by preparing more individuals in the fight against cyber threats, which President Barack Obama identifies as one of our most important challenges.
B owie State University is one of 13 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) awarded $25 million over five years to develop a pipeline
for minorities in cybersecurity. Bowie State received a five-year, $1.2 million grant in the formation of the Cybersecurity Workforce Pipeline Consortium, a network established by the U.S. Department of Energy with funding from the National Nuclear Security Administration. Led by Norfolk State University, the consortium also includes two national labs and the Charleston County School District in South Carolina.

With the grant, the university will enhance its award- winning cybersecurity curriculum by expanding on the real-world learning opportunities for students and purchasing the latest computer technology. Bowie State will also develop more summer youth technology programs and strengthen collaborations with industry leaders and government agencies.
A unique partnership with a national cybersecurity institute has already added to Bowie State’s ability to teach students the computer technology skills that employers need most.
Unique PartnershipComputer Science Professor Lethia Jackson is teaching her students to evaluate and improve computer code using the Software Assurance Marketplace (SWAMP), housed at the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, Wisconsin.
The partnership offers a national model for integrating cybersecurity into the curriculum. The SWAMP provides a rich and accessible suite of software security tools that Bowie State is integrating into undergraduate coding courses, giving students an efficient way to examine and rid their code of security weaknesses.
The academic benefits are transformational for the students, says Dr. Jackson. “My research students are becoming what I consider to be prolific programmers by using the SWAMP. Now they not only write code, but they can read and interpret other people’s code for errors, which will be necessary for any job in this field.”
She plans to establish a code review process in the classes, where graduate and undergraduate researchers submit student-produced code into the SWAMP continuous assurance pipeline. The team, called the Forensic Technology Information Cyber Squad, will work with students to identify where and why code is vulnerable and determine a path to correction.
Bowie State’s computer science department will compile its findings into a comprehensive secure coding book that defines common errors and possible fixes. Dr. Jackson says the goal is to share it with other universities, beginning with the consortium’s 12 other HBCUs.
Provost Weldon Jackson (standing fifth from the left) joins administrators from 12 other HBCUs, two national laboratories and a school system at the signing of the Cybersecurity Workforce Pipeline agreement.

Students who aspire to teach often get the best training when they are standing in front of the classroom. Over the years, the College of Education has built
strong partnerships with local public schools and in 2015 received national honors for how well it prepares student interns to become effective teachers.
The Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement Award recognizes the College of Education’s programs to enhance the hands-on experience for student interns and foster mentoring relationships with local schoolteachers. The National Association for Professional Development Schools praised Bowie State’s practice of assessing the programs’ success in providing a sound education for both the college interns and the children they help teach.
Collaboratively developed by the College of Education and its public school partners, the programs also award action research grants to encourage local teachers and student interns to explore innovative teaching methods and advance their educational practices.
Dr. Eva Garin, coordinator of Bowie State’s Professional Development Schools Network, says that the goal of the partnerships is to explore models of effective teaching and learning. After completing a yearlong clinical practicum, she says, students are better equipped to take on the classroom challenges facing educators.

The anniversary theme, “Delivering on the Promise of Opportunity,” provided the framework for a series of lectures, performances, forums, exhibits, alumni
gatherings and other events. We looked back at our humble beginnings for inspiration while focusing on the many ways Bowie State is fulfilling its vision to become one of the best comprehensive universities in the nation.
From our oldest alumna attending the kickoff luncheon in Baltimore, where the Bowie State story began, to a stellar Founders Day Awards Gala at National Harbor, Prince George’s County’s developing jewel, the sesquicentennial activities bridged the university’s geographic and histor-ical timeline. Expanding appreciation for the Bowie State story was a major focus, with an interactive website, historical video and sesquicentennial exhibit in Annapolis, providing a rich tapestry of information that reached far beyond the campus.

Equally stunning and state of the art, it promises to change the landscape of the campus as a hub for science, technology, mathematics and engineering
(STEM) education. It will position Bowie State as a leader in attracting expert faculty and producing graduates who meet the increasing national demand for qualified professionals in those fields.
The $104 million development kicked off with a ground-breaking ceremony keynoted by Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford who remarked, “This project is key to economic and workforce development for the state.”
The latest in a tripartite of new buildings erected on campus in the past five years, the science center will facilitate student research and collaboration across programs and disciplines, offering 14 teaching laboratories, 15 flexible classrooms and a rooftop greenhouse as a shared space for interactive learning. An iconic cylindrical, glass-walled structure is the center’s signature feature that will serve as a visual expression of the university’s commitment to STEM education.
The building also allows for the expansion of the nursing program, one of the most popular majors on campus with
a waiting list of interested applicants, and features a cutting-edge simulation suite to give students additional experience as hands-on practitioners. Playing a part in remedying the country’s nursing shortage and filling communities with healers and caretakers is a mighty return on the building’s initial investment.
Construction on the science center is expected to be complete in spring 2017.

WISEMAN CENTRE DEMOLITION MAKES WAY FOR
SCIENCE BUILDING
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tours the Crawford Science Building, which is slated for demolition.
W hen the J. Alexander Wiseman Student Centre opened in 1966, it was part of a period of transformation of the campus landscape
when five new buildings were erected in 11 years. Many alumni have fond memories of the Wiseman Centre—from participating in student activities to connecting with their mentors to meeting lifelong friends.
Its demolition marked another era of transformation as the university made way for the construction of the Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing.
The student center’s name honored the legacy of Dr. Wiseman, a Bowie State alumnus and beloved education professor who eventually became the founding director of the Graduate Division in 1969. His relatives got the chance to visit the campus just before the building’s demolition and made their way to the newly opened Student Center, which still honors Dr. Wiseman with a first-floor ballroom that bears his name.
After the completion of the new science center, the Crawford Science Building will be demolished and replaced with
green space. Opened in 1967, the building is currently home to the departments of natural sciences and mathematics. Its demolition will mark the complete transition of those academic programs to the larger, state-of-the-art science center and create new open space adjacent to the Student Center.

Creating an earth-friendly campus has long been a priority at Bowie State. With the completion of several concurrent initiatives, the university solidified its position as a leader in sustainability.
Bowie State ranked among the greenest historically black colleges and universities in The HBCU Green Report—jointly released by Clark Atlanta
University, the Building Green Initiative and the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development. Bowie State was one of only three schools out of the 43 surveyed to hit every benchmark based on a ten-category checklist, comprising administration, green building, student involvement, food and recycling, and climate change and energy.
A GREEN CAMPUS GETS EVEN
GREENERIn 2014, Bowie State became the first HBCU to earn the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold Certification for a student center. The new construction, completed in 2013, was also honored with an Excellence in Design Award by the American Institute of Architects. The installation of two solar-powered charging stations also gave the campus community a more convenient and energy-efficient way to power up their cell phones, laptops and tablets, reducing reliance on traditional electric sockets.
These planned efforts, included in the university’s framework to achieve climate neutrality by 2019, have been funded in part by Bowie State’s students, who elected to implement a yearly sustainability fee as part of their tuition. In 2015, President Mickey Burnim signed the American Campuses Act on Climate Pledge and the new American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, building on the university’s dedication to sustainability.

The Student Government Association invited leaders from the Bowie State University Police, Bowie City Police and Prince George’s County Police to join a panel to discuss relations between law enforcement and the people they serve. The forum provided a platform for students to address their questions to police officials in an open exchange—an example of the kinds of peaceful dialogue that can take place between police and the public. The vigil, held just before the forum, symbolized a public display of unity to increase positive interactions between students and the police. Officers and students, holding hands as they stood around the campus obelisk, listened to songs, poetry and a prayer for unity.
Throughout the school year, students found ways to raise their voices and energize the campus and local community in response to cases of suspected police brutality. When widespread rioting and protests surged in Ferguson, Missouri and major cities nationwide following the police shooting of Michael Brown in fall 2014, Bowie State students stopped traffic on MD-197 in a peaceful demonstration just outside the campus. They also held a vigil in Brown’s honor. When looting and violent protests spread throughout Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, student leaders and athletes volunteered in the clean-up efforts in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods.

JOIN NATIONAL CONVERSATIONS
On the eve of major local, statewide and Congressional elections, Bowie State students made their voices heard by engaging political leaders and candidates
in national conversations.
Joining House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-Md.) at a college affordability press conference, student Golden Okolo shared the impact of taking on thousands of dollars in student loans at an out-of-state university before transferring to Bowie State. A month later, U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski visited the campus to hear from students and administrators about the challenges Maryland students face in paying for their education.
Building on the momentum of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative to address opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color, Cardin returned to campus with Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) for a press briefing on how community partners, like Bowie State University, can support it. They learned about the successes of the Bowie State Male Initiative in helping male students reach their full potential though mentoring and support.
Students also invited high-profile political candidates to the campus to engage students in their campaign agendas. Maryland gubernatorial candidate Larry Hogan, who was elected governor in 2015, visited the campus to encourage students to exercise their right to vote in a forum hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha fraternity. As Congressman Rand Paul (R-Ky.) weighed a run for the White House, he visited Bowie State to lay out his vision for criminal justice reform.

The team developed the kiosk to enable people in need to receive real-time information about the number of available beds at local shelters, as well as other resources like food, toiletries or clothing. For the project to be fully implemented, the students proposed that the kiosk would use reservation software to connect to a network of local shelters.
The invention was developed for the STARS Design Challenge, a contest through the Department of Computer Science encouraging students to use technology to create an original product that addresses a problem in society. Assistant Professor Courtney Lamar established the competition to engage students from various academic programs to work together to turn their ideas into a workable model.

NEW VICTORY
Athletics
A s gifted in the classroom as they are in their game, they also won the CIAA Bowling Highest Grade Point Average Award for their cumulative 3.23 GPA,
the most preeminent of any CIAA women’s bowling team.
The Lady Bulldogs earned the lofty CIAA title in a 4–1 blowout against defending Virginia State, clinching the victory for the 2014–2015 season. It’s an addition to an already long string of championships in 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2013. Under the direction of Head Coach Kenneth Scott, they finished with a 61–23 overall record and placed sixth in The National Tenpin Coaches Association poll of D2/D3 schools.
For an impressive fifth time, Bowie State University Women’s Bowling Team brought the championship back to campus, reaffirming them as the university’s winningest team in any sport in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
The team also dominated the top league honors during the CIAA Bowling Awards Ceremony, including Bowler of the Year (Shayla Lightfoot), Rookie of the Year (Sierra Davis) and Coach of the Year. Together, they won the Northern Division trophy for finishing the regular season with only one conference loss. Four students, including a set of sisters, were named to the honorary 10-member All-CIAA Women’s Bowling Team.

A T H L E T I C S
EXCELLENCE ON THE FIELD AND IN THE
CLASSROOM
The Bowie State University athletics program encourages students to be great in their sport and in their studies. Throughout her time at Bowie State,
Cassandra Clayborne distinguished herself on both fronts.
A star on the field and in the classroom, outfielder Clayborne ended her stellar Bowie State softball career in 2015 by being named one of the top 30 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which recognizes excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. She was selected from a record 480 school nominees, which was narrowed to 30 women representing each of the three NCAA divisions and 12 different sports.
An Honors Program student and biology major, Clayborne graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and was also named the 2015 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year by the CIAA, among other awards.
Clayborne’s honor shined a national spotlight on Bowie State athletics as she represented the university and the CIAA at the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year’s annual ceremony in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her teammates and coaches heralded her positive attitude and her dedication to her studies.
Bulldogs Take Northern Division Title, Player of the YearThe Bulldogs men’s basketball team clinched the CIAA Northern Division title when they closed out the season with a 21-7 overall record (13-3 in league play and 8-2 in the North). Although Bowie State shared the title with the Virginia State University Trojans, the Bulldogs entered the CIAA Tournament as the #1 seed. BOWIE STATE GUARD CAMERON KNOX was named the 2014–2015 CIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Bulldogs Football Produces NFL TalentFORMER BULLDOGS TIGHT END KHARI LEE (’15) joined the National Football League in 2015 after a Pro Day on campus drew more than 20 NFL team managers, scouts and staff to evaluate his skills. Lee signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans before being traded to the Chicago Bears, who gave up a draft pick to get him. Another Bulldog, WIDE RECEIVER DOUGLAS MCNEIL III (’13), suited up for the Seattle Seahawks on the NFL’s biggest stage that year, becoming the second former Bowie State athlete to be a part of a Super Bowl roster.
