Making Disciples
One important feature of discipleship is a commitment to make disciples. Jesus’ final command to his disciples was to make more disciples (Matt 28:19-‐20), and making more disciples meant not only converting and baptizing them, but teaching them to obey all that Jesus commanded. Clearly, things like the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-‐7) are in mind here, but notice that Jesus’ words in this Great Commission are also commands. To teach new disciples to observe all that Jesus commanded means to teach disciples to make new disciples and teach them to make disciples. It is a self-‐perpetuating process, a process of multiplication. We might rightfully ask, “If I am not making disciples, what biblical grounds do I have for calling myself a disciple?” Consequently, one of the foundations of our mission is to make disciples. We do this in a variety of ways.
v Christ-‐centered worship and preaching during each Monday night BSU Gather.
v Intentional discipleship on the Leadership Team. v Working toward four semester discipleship study
curriculum: Ø Basic Doctrine: Apostles’ Creed Ø The Church: What is it and what is my role? Ø Spiritual Disciplines Ø Biblical Manhood and Womanhood
v Various small group studies (see separate brochure for details)
Developing Leaders We seek to develop leaders in two primary ways.
v We ask our leadership team routinely for ideas on how to make BSU a more effective Christ-‐centered community. Their thoughtful, prayerful ideas are a valuable part of making BSU better. Thinking of and voicing valuable opinions are one way of learning and growing and taking leadership.
v We expect our team to be servant leaders. That means that we take an active role in serving the community, but we must also lead. It is not enough for us to do all of the setup, cleaning, and events and leave everyone else out of the process. If that’s the case, we are not leading anyone—we are just doing things. With this in mind, the Areas of Ownership and Service is a reminder of ways in which we can practice servant leadership and help BSU accomplish its mission.
Missional Living
We encourage students to be authentic, radical, passionate, and intentional for Jesus.
v Authentic: We strive to be real, transparent lovers of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.
v Radical: We desire to live lives of such devoted service to Jesus Christ that the world will see us as “radical” because our lives will look like Jesus’ example of humility and service instead of pride and self-‐indulgence.
v Passionate: We desire to have a passionate relationship with Jesus Christ that demosntrates that we treasure Christ and the glory of God above all things.
v Intentional: We seek to find opportunities, or use the opportunities already before us, to proclaim the love of Jesus Christ to others.
Missional Living
We encourage students to “Do Life,” by which we mean embracing a God-‐centered life that results in depth of knowledge, growth in wisdom, and is refined to reflect Jesus! We hope to see them change, grow, and refine as a result of their involvement in BSU.
v Change: We believe that a life of service to Jesus
requires that we change after we believe. Paul writes, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Paul routinely expresses our new life with the metaphor of putting off the old self and clothing ourselves with the new self as with a garment. We, therefore, desire to change, as much as possible, into the likeness of Christ.
v Grow: We desire to grow in wisdom and also in our understanding of and relationship with God the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ, recognizing that it is possible by the continued work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
v Refine: Sometimes change and growth get misinterpreted as legalism, that the Christian life is about following a bunch of rules. This often leads to asking questions like, “How close can I get to the ‘sin line’ before I cross it?” We believe that Jesus taught us to refine our lives by making conscious choices to honor him in all our thoughts, words, and actions. We call this the development of Christian virtue.
Mission of BSU Our mission at BSU is to make disciples who make disciples, love God, and love others. Our goal is to challenge students to pursue passionately a relationship with Christ as we respond to His grace through worship, discipleship, and service as a Christ-‐centered community. We aim to accomplish this goal by developing leaders, promoting and practicing missional living, and making disciples of Jesus Christ.
How do we accomplish this mission? Making Disciples
v Communicate to Leadership Team the importance of discipleship, detail biblical models of discipleship, and equip them to disciple others.
v Disciple interns and equip them to help disciple the rest of the Leadership Team and others.
v With aid of interns, disciple the Leadership Team and equip them to disciple others in small group and one-‐on-‐one settings.
Missional Living v Establish a vision for campus and community
mission for the semester. v Have individuals on the Leadership Team take on a
“people group” on campus that they are already involved in with the goal of reaching them with the gospel.
v Participate in community service opportunities. v Plan and execute regular on campus Acts of
Kindness (AOK’s) to serve students. v Have a visible presence on campus (service, club
fairs, etc.).
Developing Leaders v Communicate to our Leadership Team the
importance of leadership, detail foundational aspects of Christian leadership, and provide opportunities to take leadership.
v Spend intentional leadership training time with Leadership Team. Teach them in particular the importance of servant leadership and leading by example

WHO? The Baptist Student Union (BSU) is a ministry to the students, faculty, staff, and administration of College of the Ozarks. We desire for BSU to be a Christ-‐centered community of worship, fellowship, accountability, and service. We meet each Monday night at 9pm for BSU Gather, a weekly gathering of college students for fellowship, worship, and challenging teaching.
WHAT? Our mission, vision, and goals for BSU demonstrate our ultimate goal of growing in the likeness of and in relationship with Jesus Christ. Our mission is to make disciples who make disciples, love God, and love others. Our goal is to challenge students to pursue passionately a relationship with Christ as we respond to His grace through worship, discipleship, and service as a Christ-‐centered community. We aim to accomplish this goal by developing leaders, promoting and practicing missional living, and making disciples of Jesus Christ.
Our vision is to see the students of BSU become a multiplying community as their growth in relationship with Jesus Christ leads to Gospel proclamation and kingdom living.
HOW? BSU seeks to model the local church, not be the local church, so that students can learn better how to serve in the local church according to their gifts.
