Foreword

This European Standard has been prepared byTechnical Committee CEN/TC 156, Ventilation forbuildings, the secretariat of which is held by BSI.

This standard is one of a series of standards forductwork used for ventilation and air conditioning ofbuildings for human occupancy, and it has a parallelstandard referring to dimensions of ducts with circularcross-section.

The position of this standard in the field of mechanicalbuilding services is shown in Figure 1.

This European Standard shall be given the status of anational standard, either by publication of an identicaltext or by endorsement, at the latest by June 1998, andconflicting national standards shall be withdrawn atthe latest by June 1998.

According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations,the national standards organizations of the followingcountries are bound to implement this EuropeanStandard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark,Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland,Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

IntroductionThis standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 156 tospecify dimensions and tolerances for rectangularducts and duct fittings used in ventilation systems.

Dimension and tolerances for straight ducts given inthis standard are in accordance with ISO 7807:19831)

concerning recommended sizes.

The dimensions given for duct fittings are based ondocument EUROVENT 2/41).

1 ScopeThis European Standard specifies dimensions of sheetmetal air ducts and duct fittings with rectangularcross-section. It applies to ductwork used in ventilationand air conditioning systems in buildings subject tohuman occupancy. The wall thickness of ducts andfittings is not specified in this standard; strength andleakage are dealt with in prEN 1507.

The corresponding standard for circular ducts isEN 1506.

3 Definitions and symbolsFor the purposes of this standard, the definitions givenin CR 12792, together with the following, apply.

nominal size

reference dimension used for designation, calculationand application of ducts and fittings. For ducts, thenominal size is the internal dimension of side a andside b, where a is the visible side (see Figure 2). Thelengths of the sides of the smaller end of atransformation piece are denoted by c and d, where c isthe visible side (see Figure 2)

4 Dimensions and values for ductsThe dimensions for ducts, including the correspondingvalues of cross-sectional area (Ac in m2), hydraulicdiameter (dh in mm), equivalent diameter (de in mm)and duct surface area per metre length (Ai in m2/m),are given in Table 1.

The equivalent diameter de is calculated using thefollowing formula:

5 Dimensions for fittings

5.1 Bends

Examples of bends are shown in Figure 3.

In order to reduce the pressure loss, bends of largerdimensions may be provided with splitters. Examplesof designing and positioning of splitters are given inannex B.

5.2 Branches

Examples of branches are shown in Figure 4. Thedimensions r and f are given in Table 2.

The tolerance of angles is 28.

B.1 General

It is recommended that splitters are positioned inaccordance with the examples given in Table B.1.Designers should take account of individual systemrequirements regarding acoustics, velocity and pressurewhen selecting duct fittings.

NOTE 1 The bend shown in Figure 3a) is only recommended foruse on low pressure/velocity systems and smaller dimensions ofducts.

NOTE 2 For bends shown in Figures 3b) and 3c), with radius rless than 100 mm, splitters are recommended in accordance withTable B.1 and Figure B.1. If alternatively r is increased to 0,5asplitters may be omitted.

NOTE 3 For bends shown in Figures 3d), 3e) and 3f), with angles# 458, splitters are not required but for angles > 458, splitters arerecommended.

NOTE 4 For transformation pieces, as shown on Figures 5 and 6,which are large or are used on high velocity systems the slopeangle a should be reduced.
