Brutus 2014
Vol 4
Wow!
“Use your time wisely”
Baie liefde

Gehoor in die gange
“As my ma vra hoe my vraestel was, sê ek baie lekker, dankie. So lekker, ek dink ek skryf hom sommer volgende jaar weer.”
As ek nie ‘n outfit kry om aan te trek nie, las ek maar die SS en swot in my kamer.
“As ek nou kon teruggaan skool toe, doen ek matriek as ‘n vak.”
“Ek moet by die huis gaan swot, want ek moet nog al my notas print en my printing credits is op. En dis die einde van die maand. Plus Admin A is ver van die koshuis af.” – Op die rooiplein
“University is easy. It’s like riding a bike. And the bike’s on fire. And the
ground’s on fire. And everything’s on fire because you’re in hell.”
–Tina Brand
“What is the main reason for failure? I think it’s exams. What do you think?”
–in dive SS.
During the 5minutes of a test every student gets a super power.
I’m at that point in the semester where if a car hit me, I’d probably say thank you to the kind stranger.
Unfriendliness in “The Land of the Friendly People”
Tropical beaches, coral reefs, a warm, turquoise
ocean. This is probably what a typical description of
Mozambique would sound like. Located on the South
East coast of Africa, Mozambique is bathed in rich
history. Thanks to its natural beauty, wildlife and
historic heritage, the country’s economic and tourism
sectors have been insurgent in the past years. Driving
from Johannesburg to Maputo takes less than seven
hours. A journey along the Limpopo River, taking in
sights such as Vilanculos Beach or the Cahora Bassa
Dam, could easily help you relax after the stress of
exams.
However, if you take time to look past the appeal of
attractions such as the Bazaruto Archipelago with
islands like Santa Carolina, seen on the second
season of Survivor South Africa, you will come to
learn that for much of its existence, Mozambique has
had to endure various forms of political unrest.
After gaining independence from Portugal, The
Peoples Republic of Mozambique was established
on 25 June 1975. Only two years later, the country
was uprooted by an intense civil war that would last
16 years. Waged between the ruling Mozambique
Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and the newly formed
Mozambique Resistance Movement (RENAMO), the
conflict led to the collapse of infrastructure, lack of
investment in productive assets as well as
widespread famine. The period was also marked by
human rights violations from both sides, including the
recruitment of nearly 10 000 child soldiers by
RENAMO. The war formally ended in 1992, with an
estimated one million deaths and over five million
displaced refugees as a result, as well as the
bespoke death of the country’s first elected
president, Samora Machel.
Recently there has been resurgence in RENAMO
activity. A renewed rebellion that began in October
2013 has already led to more than one hundred
deaths. A ceasefire has been in effect since August
of this year, allowing elections to be held in October.
FRELIMO and its presidential candidate Filipe Nyusi
were declared as victors on 31 October 2014.
Tensions remain high however as opposition
parties challenge the results of the elections
citing claims of fraud.
Thus far the violence has not been centered in
regions popular with tourists. If you plan to travel
to Pemba with its renowned Portuguese
architecture, or you want to dive with whale
sharks in Tofo, or want to see any other of the
numerous cities and towns and beautiful gems
that Mozambique has to offer, we urge you to
do so with caution.
Although you and I can add nothing to
immediate efforts of relief, just by setting aside
our ignorance and realising the need of the
citizens of countries like Mozambique that are
under threat of political unrest, we can already
help to preserve the natural beauty and the
cultural and historical significance of
landmarks.
Santa Carolina Island, Bazaruto
The once prestigious Grand Hotel Beira, reduced to a
slum by militia and civil war refugees.

Love is in the sun (maybe still on maties crushes
for some) Dates in summer are always the best no matter how
cheap and small they are. Nothing beats being in the
sun and experiencing life with that special person. So
this summêr, make everyday a valentine’s day with these
cheap summer date ideas:
1. Back before PlayStation and series consumed our
lives, the local park was the best place to be in the
universe. So go out into the playground and have
summer fun.
2. Cookout. That is always a great way to get creative
with some exotic spices and a lot of flavor.
3. Biking is relaxing and healthy. Take a ride and
have some fun getting fit together.
4. Outdoor Concert. Leave the iPod at home and go
listen to some live music. Many cities or towns offer
outdoor concerts. It’s a great way to enjoy the music or
dance without the stuffy club setting or overpriced
drinks.
5. Hiking is sweet and romantic and definitely
cheap.
6. Be a tourist for a day. Take time to explore around
your city and create memories.
Fountain hopping. One of the most romantic movie 7.
scenes of all time is from Fellini's La Dolce Vita where
Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni danced in the
Trevi Fountains, but you don't have to go to Rome to
recreate this romantic moment. Grab a towel, some beach
balls, maybe a floating mattress or two, and head to the
nearest park/college/campus/any place with lots of
fountains, and pretend it's your personal resort for the
day.
8. Have a stargazing picnic: Make dinner, grab some
bug spray, and head outside or up to the roof to eat
under the stars. You can make it romantic by setting up
lights, pillows and blankets - your own romantic rooftop
fort. Make a playlist for the occasion as you lay back
and try to point out as many constellations as you can
9. Spend a Hot Day at the Zoo: You probably don't
remember how great the zoo really is. The adorable
animals, the cotton candy, feeding time in the lion cage.
You can walk around all day, holding hands and
there's always a new topic of conversation right around
the next corner. Don't worry about the heat. If you get too
hot, you can always head to the Rainforest Building,
cuddle up, cool down in the artificial mist while exotic
birds fly over your heads.
10. Ice cream dates. There is nothing better than going
ice cream tasting, trying out all the unique flavors and
figuring out what you like best. It’s cheap and cooling
Religious Education According to the 2001 census (The recent census with
religious statistics due to low priority) in South Africa;
Christianity, Islam and Hinduism are the three largest
religions in the country. Amongst many others,
Christians make up 79.8% of the South African
population, Muslims make up 1.5% and Hindus make
up 1.2% of South Africa’s population.
The diversity that is in South Africa comes with
various cultures and religions and that are depicted in
Nerina as well. These different religions have different
practices, origins and so forth. It is quite essential
that we try to learn and acknowledge each other’s
religious beliefs to obtain more respect for one
another. Embracing our differences will strengthen
the sisterhood that is already apparent and make our
experience in Nerina remarkable.
The purpose of all major religious traditions is not to
construct big temples on the outside, but to create
temples of goodness and compassion inside, in our
hearts. – Tenzin Gyatso, 14TH Dalia Lama.

HOPE is the soul's best bower anchor let
go in good holding ground. Through every
trial, through every woe, in health, in
sickness, in poverty and in want, hope, like
a bright fixed star of promise, shines
aloft and bids us not despair. Hope
entered the dark chambers of our childish
hearts, and has ever since been the sun
of our existence, shining day and night,
never dark, never extinguished. Hope joined
us in the cradle, and will be with us at
the last.
Hope never dies in the breast of man;
It may slumber and sleep for a while,
Then wakes up refreshed, all its troubles
to scan,
And meets them half-way with a confident
smile.
At home or abroad, on land, on sea, in
prosperity or in adversity, hope's beaming
star ever lights us, sometimes feeble,
but oftener bright; sometimes weak, but
oftener strong. Hope is the murderer's
cell, and with the shipwrecked mariner on
the desert isle; in the palace, and in the
cot; it is shining with surpassing splendor
by the dying bed of the Christian, and
flickering round the couch of the infidel.
Hope met our first parents in Eden, and
will be with the last man on earth. Hope is
part of our immortality; we hope on, and we
hope ever.

EK IS MY BREIN
karakter.
Neurowetenskappe. Hy was ‘n professor in neurobiologie by
“Ek is my brein” is ook gepubliseer in Sjina, Duitsland, Italië,
“ ʼn vrye keuse” of “ ʼn weloorwoë besluit” bestempel nie.
afhanklikheid, sterk gefokuste aandag, obsessiewe
jou ʼn lekker gevoel gee en dopamien as chemiese
boodskapper gebruik, is baie aktief.
Hierdie belonende sisteem is nie net betrokke by
boonop ook by verslawing. Dit verklaar ook die hewige
“onttrekkingsimptome” wanneer so ʼn intense verhouding
is.
styg en by mans daal.
Wanneer daar ʼn stabiele paarvorming plaasvind, verdwyn
“regte” maat. Eers as die hewige verliefdheid verby is, neem
“Dis ALLES my brein se skuld, Pa!”

Finding the perfect swimwear for your
body shape
Marnia Wessels
Summer is here and “Jooltoer” is just around the
corner. All you need is a swimsuit that will
highlight your body in all the right places. Finding
the perfect swimsuit may cause more stress than the
exam. Fortunately, there is a way to find the perfect
swimsuit for your body type. The most important rule
for swimsuit shopping is to achieve balance. You want
the bottom half and the top half of your body to
balance out.
The four body types:
-Hourglass
-Newspaper
-Apple
-Pear
Hourglass
Your upper and lower body are very similar in
measurements and well-proportioned. Woman with
hourglass figures have a distinctively narrow
waist.
*You need extra support on top, so look for
halter tops or swimsuits with enough coverage.
*Be careful to wear the classic string bikini
with a triangle top.
*Stick to a bikini with a matching top and
bottom.
Newspaper
There is no big difference between the size of
your hips, waist and shoulders. With the lack
of a defined waist, you are the opposite of a curvy body.
*You do want to add some curves, so go for ruffles, ties
and girly detail to add some volume.
*Girly detail such as floral prints are always a winner.
*Try to draw the attention to your hips with a detailed
bottom.
Apple
The top half of your body is generally
bigger than the bottom half. You
have a large chest and stomach,
but slimmer hips. You tend to gain
weight above your waist.
*A swimsuit with a belt will instantly make your waist
look smaller.
*Rather go for darker solid colors and matching tops and
bottoms.
*A V-neck and solid side panels will give you a taller and
slimmer upper body.
Pear
Pears tend to have
smaller upper bodies and
larger lower bodies.
Your hips are a bit
wider than your shoulders and you normally
gain weight below your waist.
*With a small chest you do want to add some
volume to your upper body, so go for a
detailed top.
*Try fold-over style bottoms, it will give
you a slimmer look below your waist.
*If you go for a two-toned swimsuit, keep it dark on the
bottom.
