Community Spirit and New Beginnings in Brunswick
l Welcome
Please allow me to welcome you to the City of Brunswick, Ohio. We who live here know just
how lucky we are to call Brunswick home. I feel confident in saying that there is more raw community energy in Brunswick than you’ll find most anywhere. We boast countless civic and volunteer groups all taking ownership of some piece of our community life. Our residents have managed to balance the City’s growth and expanding regional profile with a well maintained small-town feel. Brunswick really is a uniquely welcoming place to live.
The City is off to another new beginning here in 2011 as it welcomed its new City Manager and Safety Director, Jim Lukas. He joins Brunswick after serving many years as the City Manager of Franklin, Ohio. They were sorry to lose Jim, and we were very lucky to get him. Jim brings many years of experience guiding city operations, and a no-nonsense, common sense approach to everything he does. He confronts challenges head on and brings a welcome transparency to his dialogue with our Council. Brunswick is very fortunate to have someone with Jim’s skills and instincts at the helm.
One of Brunswick’s best known and best loved attractions has always been Mapleside Farms on Pearl Road. The farm is under new ownership as of this year when Greg and Kelly Clement took over. Greg and Kelly have infused this prototype of Brunswick’s history, roots, and charm with a new energy and feel, and given the restaurant a new name, the Melrose Grille. They continue working closely with the Eyssen family, whose love for Brunswick and commitment to our community established Mapleside as the regional attraction that it is. This is a great Brunswick story: one family with deep Brunswick roots handing off a local landmark to the loving care of another family with deep Brunswick roots. It’s a perfect snapshot of the spirit that animates our city.
Such stories are not rare in Brunswick. They result from the quality of the people living here. Our local non-profits and other volunteer groups keep generating opportunities for creative input in the City’s life. One great example is our Citizens Police Academy. They train residents in policing operations and involve the graduates in a wide range of police department support activities. With nationally recognized city-service programming and various other citizen advisory boards helping the City craft
its growth plans, Brunswick is truly developing itself as a model for vibrant community life everywhere.
The public servants who work in our local government are no exception. Police Chief Carl DeForest has for the last several years spearheaded the department’s participation in the torch passing ceremonies that culminate with the start of the Special Olympics in Columbus. Chief DeForest also co-captains the City’s “Pedal to the Point” team. One Saturday each August, as many as 40+ city team members (present company included)
have joined the Chief and literally thousands of others on a 75-mile bike ride from Middleburg Heights to Sandusky, Ohio, to raise money for the MS Society. The sturdiest souls (present company excluded) make the 75-mile return trip on Sunday. Another good example is our Assistant Fire Chief, Rick Barber. He has spearheaded a program called “adopt a hydrant,” by which he has inspired numerous volunteer residents to pick up free paint and brushes to paint fire hydrants throughout the city. The level of participation in Assistant Chief Barber’s program has been phenomenal, and the success is all driven by civic-minded residents, like Assistant Chief Barber.
Brunswick is made for family living. We’ve got first-rate schools, numerous civic and travel sports leagues, our own Susan L. Hambley Nature Center, and a 335-acre City park system. Our Recreation Center offers state-of-the-art workout equipment and a host of other swimming, fitness, and educational opportunities. And a vibrant area faith community, across many faith traditions, generously ministers to the needs of our local and regional population.
We who live in Brunswick care about being good citizens and good neighbors. The first-class family environment for which Brunswick has received national recognition is something we produce together. I am proud to be a public servant in such a place. Come visit us sometime, or maybe even become a part of Brunswick, a truly dynamic place to live.

a variety of employee related needs, including the management and coordination of health insurance and benefits, recruitment, testing, hiring of staff, and issuing City-wide policies. In general, the office performs the traditional offerings of regular Human Resource offices.
Additionally, the Office of Administrative Services is responsible for all aspects of coordination of the public bidding process, working in tandem with all City departments in their purchasing needs. Please call 330-558-6860 for more information on the Office of Administrative Services.
COuNCiL CLERk/MAyOR’S SECRETARy The office of the Clerk of Council acts as the liaison between
residents and elected officials. The Clerk regularly processes records requests from the community at large, prepares the Council agenda and packets for their regular meetings, and composes the minutes of the majority of these public meetings. Additionally, the Clerk’s office can provide Notary services for the community at no charge, and coordinates the posting and codification of the Ordinances adopted by City Council.
In a dual role, the Clerk also serves as the secretary to the Mayor’s office and helps to coordinate public events such as ribbon cuttings and grand openings, as well as the preparation of Mayoral recognitions and proclamations. The Clerk also coordinates the scheduling of weddings which are performed by the Mayor for a nominal fee of $40. Additionally, the Clerk assists with the recruitment of members for a variety of City
Boards, Commissions and Committees. For more information, contact the office of the Clerk of Council at 330-558-6845, Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 5:00pm.
diViSiON OF ENgiNEERiNgWhile the work of this City department may be somewhat
invisible, it is one of the most important aspects to the proper function and placement of Brunswick’s roadways, storm water drainage and the City’s traffic flow, just to name a few. The Engineering Department works closely with the Planning Department to make sure the final design of new neighborhoods are compatible with their surroundings and do not poorly impact the existing neighborhoods. The same attention is given to retail and industrial developments with the goal of creating a harmonious community. From the smallest drive pipe to the largest neighborhood detention basin, the storm water system is designed to alleviate flooding throughout our community. The Engineering Department even makes it easier for you to receive your mail, as it is where all addresses in the community are assigned. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact the Brunswick City Engineer at 330-558-6880 between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Twenty-four hour voicemail service is available.
gREAT LOCATiONThe City of Brunswick is an ideal place for commercial and

recognized in this fashion. We also welcomed a new firefighter this year, Firefighter /Medic John Hovan, who comes to us with extensive firefighting and EMT experience.
Our Adopt-A-Hydrant program continued this year. The community responded by helping us to finish painting all our fire hydrants. In addition we have completed the annual service and maintenance program for our hydrants which ensures they are in good working order and ready in the unfortunate event that we should ever need them.
A new project this year was the continued in house improvement of our fire station number two. The work included some outdoor landscaping, repainting the apparatus bays and the installation of new energy efficient lighting with support from Sherwin Williams Paint in Brunswick and First Energy.
Our Fire Prevention Program continues to provide safety inspections for the businesses here in Brunswick as well as assisting new businesses with their required inspection and tests prior to opening their doors. While this program often goes unnoticed, it is at the forefront of protecting our citizens by preventing the loss of life and damage to property which is inherent with a fire.
Brunswick’s Medic 1, one of four
ambulance units, is equipped to
provide full advanced life support
service to the community.

T here’s something about a child’s smile.
Those first teeth are the basis for beautiful grins and precious school photos. But what you might not
realize is that it’s a trip to the right dentist that can set the stage for a lifetime of good oral health.
“Visiting a pediatric dentist, instead of a general dentist, is as important as taking your child to a pediatrician, instead of a family practitioner,” explains Dr. Arlene Coloma, D.D.S, M.S. “Pediatric dentists receive an additional two to three years of specialized training centered around the growth and development of children.”
Dr. Arlene has been the pediatric dentist of choice in this area for more than eight years. “We’ve established an outstanding reputation in the community as the kind of practice that is absolutely focused on children. Parents know they can expect a more successful outcome because we speak directly to
the kids,” she says. “It’s important to make the first visit as positive as possible. We let your child sit in the chair and look at all of the tools. They get to meet the tooth tickler and we talk to them on their level,” Dr. Arlene explains. She sneaks an exam in, too.
“I never want their first visit to be traumatic,” she emphasizes. “And it’s so important for parents to realize that age one is the new standard, instead of age three. These aren’t just little teeth, they’re little people. I’m passionate about helping them keep a healthy smile—for life.”

Gina Upholzer, a student at Hickory Ridge Elementary School, started making Duct Tape clutches/pencil cases for her friends as a hobby, but then decided to make them for charity.
Gina’s dad is walking in the Susan G Komen 3-Day to support her grandmother, Theresa Rinaldi, who was diagnosed with Stage IV Breast Cancer.
In February, she asked her mother to put her creations on eBay so that she could do something more to help. Her parents, Joe and Alesa, are very proud of her and her efforts -- and then came another surprise.
After being featured on Fox 8 News, the Duck Brand® supplied Gina with all of Duck Tape that she will need for her fundraising! “It’s wonderful how this company is supporting the efforts of my daughter to raise money for charity,” said her dad.
The pencil cases are 8.5” wide and have a Velcro closure. They are made completely by this 9-year old with the help of her friends, and are perfect for pencil cases (for boys and girls) and clutch purses (for girls - even teens and adults). At the time of the walk, Gina had raised more than $3600 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation by making her Duck Tape Purses!

for the past two years. The show is not only an opportunity for students to show off their artwork, but it is also a fundraiser for Kidder’s Art department. “A percentage of each frame sold comes back to Kidder. I am trying to save up enough money for a new kiln. We do have a kiln here at Kidder that works, but it’s very old,” said Mr. Vance.
Mr. Vance chooses the projects that are going to be in the show. “ I have specific projects per grade level.” The artwork that is featured is different for each grade: Kindergarten learned how to correctly paint with watercolor paints and created a crab out of their handprints. First grade learned how the artist/author Eric Carle created his artwork for his books. First grade then used Eric Carle as their inspiration for creating an imaginary watercolor collage creature. Second grade learned about tape resist and used this skill to create a landscape watercolor painting of birch trees. Third grade studied the cave paintings of Lascaux, France (via the Internet) and used oil pastels to create their own style cave paintings. Fourth grade studied some of the portrait work done by Pablo Picasso (cubism) and they created their own cubistic oil pastel portraits. And Fifth grade was introduced to
the photographer Ansel Adams and used some of his work as inspiration for their own nature photographs, which were taken at fifth grade camp.
Parent, Michelle Newcomer, said that her favorite part of the art fair is “seeing all of the children’s different levels of artistic abilities.” Micah Pistillo, a Kidder fifth grader took a picture at Hiram
House, where the 5th graders go to learn about the outdoors. “I took a picture of these leaves on top of each other because all of the layers had pretty colors.” said Micah. Samantha Wolf, a 4th grader, made a sculpture of a dog from clay because “Dogs are my favorite type of animal.” Elizabeth Vance, Mark Vance’s wife thinks that what he gets out of the art show is “Seeing all of the children get a chance to shine.” When asked what Mr. Vance thought his students get from the fair he replied “They get a sense of pride and joy from seeing their artwork displayed in such a professional manner. Most have never had their work put into a museum style double matted frame.”
Mark Vance has two children, a daughter named Murphy who is 12 and a son named Jack who is nine. (continued on page 20.)

Hickory Ridge Students Breakfast Book Club
By: Molly McGinnis 7th grade, edwards Middle School
Students at Hickory Ridge Elementary school are enjoying books and breakfast together in the breakfast book club. The breakfast book club started about 3 years ago. They are known for
their donut discussions and their pop-tart projects.
The breakfast book club meets two Thursday mornings a month. They meet from 7:45am- 8:25am. On the first meeting, the kids have donut discussions. Every month the kids get a new book to read. On the donut discussion days the kids in kindergarten through second grade read a picture book with Mrs. Yates, a club advisor and second grade teacher. Then, they talk about the book. The third through fifth graders read chapter books on donut discussion days. The older students and Mrs. Smith, a club advisor and special ed. teacher, start the books and talk about the first chapter.
The second meeting is the pop-tart projects. On this Thursday the students in grades kindergarten to second grade meet with Mrs. Yates again, but this time they complete a project on the book they read at the beginning of the month. The third through fifth graders do a project on the book that they started at the beginning of the month and were supposed to finish before this meeting with Mrs. Smith. “My favorite part of the breakfast book club is the fun projects,” says Grace M., first grader, “and the funny books!”
Marissa M., third grader, said “The fun projects after we read the books are the best part of breakfast book club!”
This is a wonderful club that gets kids reading. The best part is that the kids enjoy themselves. Way to go breakfast book club!

Obesity is on the rise for American kids. In fact, there are almost three times as many obese kids
ages 6 to 19 as there were 30 years ago, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some experts believe if obesity among children continues to increase, our children’s generation will become the first in American history to have a shorter life than their parents.
An obese child or teen is at risk for health problems during their youth and as adults. They’re more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes – two leading causes of death in the United States. They’re also more likely to get asthma, liver degeneration and sleep apnea. Obesity is a leading cause of preventable death in America, second only
to smoking, according to the CDC.
Obesity can also cause your kids to face psychological and social
problems. They can be teased and face discrimination. That, in turn, can cause low self-esteem and hurt their schoolwork and social skills, even as an adult.
Weight problems in children and adolescents are generally caused by
not being active, not eating well, or combination of the two, according to
the U.S. Surgeon General. Genetics and lifestyle affect your child’s weight, too.
Take a closer look at your child. Watch his or her habits at home and talk to your doctor to determine if
your child is overweight.
understanding BMi
“obesity” and “overweight” rankings for your child can be found by using weight and height to calculate the Body Mass index (BMi). the CdC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend using it to screen for obesity, overweight, healthy weight or underweight children. BMi is a reliable way to measure body fat for most children and teens even though it does not measure body fat directly. For children and teens, BMi is age and gender specific. www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/children.
Tips for Parents:• Give kids 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day• Prepare more meals at home, as a family• Prevent diabetes, heart disease and many forms of cancer with a diet rich in fruits and veggies• Limit screen time (tV, video games, computers) to 2 hours or less per day• Avoid putting a tV in your child’s bedroom• encourage children to be physically active before allowing screen time• Get at least 1 hour of physical activity each day• Plan family walk time after dinner• encourage kids to join a school sports team, club or dance class• Avoid serving soft drinks or sweetened drinks to kids• encourage water between meals because it helps kids feel full• Add fruit like lemons or limes to your water for better flavor

Colon cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers in the United States. According to
recent statistics from the American Cancer Society, there are an estimated 150,000 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed annually, and an estimated 50,000 deaths from colon cancer annually, making colon cancer the 4th most common cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
Common symptoms of colon cancer include change in bowel habit, blood in the stool and change in stool caliber. However, people with colon cancer can often have no symptoms at all, stressing the importance of colon cancer screening, which can help prevent colon cancer by finding and removing polyps, the precursors to cancer.
Colon cancer screening is recommended by all major cancer and gastroenterology societies. Although there are radiology exams and stool tests available that are approved for colon cancer
screening, it is generally preferred to undergo a colonoscopy. Screening colonoscopy is both safe and effective and generally prevents colon cancer by finding and removing precancerous polyps.
Common factors that increase the risk of developing colon polyps and colon cancer include age over 50, personal or family history of colon polyps or colon cancer, and inflammatory conditions of the colon, including Crohn’s disease or
colitis. Other common risk factors for colon cancer include diet, obesity, diabetes, smoking and heavy alcohol use.
While colonoscopies can be performed by other providers, no one better understands the anatomy and pathology of the colon than a properly trained board certified gastroenterologist. Please contact the doctors at Digestive Disease Consultants to determine if you qualify for colon cancer screening. They can be reached at 877-891-3636. See ad on page 1.

Partnering for Successthe City of Brunswick, Pearlview rehab and Wellness Center
and KHM travel Work together for Seniors
I n 2010, the City of Brunswick developed a very unique approach to its senior services. Faced with the possibility of being unable to provide a Senior Coordinator, the city took
a positive and proactive approach by partnered with Pearlview Rehab and Wellness Center and KHM Travel to provide services to the seniors. Both companies have volunteered their time to ensure that senior activities continue in our city.
KHM Travel is pleased to be working with the Brunswick Recreation Center and the City of Brunswick, providing a well-balanced travel program for Brunswick Seniors and their families. They also help individuals plan unique, affordable vacations at their full-service travel agency on Pearl Road in Brunswick.
Pearlview Rehab and Wellness Center is responsible for organizing and planning the activities at the Recreation Center.
This partnership started earlier in the year and since the transition has occurred, many new activities are taking place. There are educational series, additional days for the nutrition center, and many more activities occurring on a monthly basis which are available to all seniors in the Brunswick area - free of charge! This was all made possible because Pearlview partnered with local businesses, volunteers, and other facilities to ensure our seniors programming will continue to grow and be a success.
If you are interested in any senior activities, travel, or you would like a newsletter mailed to your home monthly, please contact the Brunswick Recreation Center Senior Coordinator at 330-273-8000 and leave your name, phone number, and address or view the extensive list of senior activities on the City’s website at www.brunswick.oh.us/recreation department/senior activities.

l Pet Health
During difficult economic times, it is important to remember the value of preventative health care. While saving money on prevention may seem reasonable, it
is almost always less expensive than medical treatment. The current recommendations are annual examinations for healthy pets and semi-annual examinations for geriatric pets. Dogs and cats age more rapidly than humans, so regular visits with a veterinarian may be the only way to detect illness at an early, treatable stage. Diagnosing medical conditions before they advance may lead to more treatment choices and sometimes less financial strain.
Parasite prevention is another area where it is more economical
to prevent than to treat. Prescription parasite prevention is safer and less expensive than treating your home and yard with
potentially dangerous chemicals. Most people do not realize that indoor pets can get parasites or that fleas can live outdoors through the winter months in northern Ohio. The two common misconceptions are that worms are visible in a pet’s stool, and that indoor pets never have parasites. Only two types of worms can be seen with the naked eye. Other parasites are identified under the microscope by the shape of the eggs they lay. There are several parasites that can be transmitted from pets to humans, so
annual stool testing is recommended to keep everyone safe. Parasite prevention may seem costly, but it is usually much less expensive and safer than treating an infestation or parasite-related illness.

While ‘staging’ a home for sale has become a great way to help potential buyers visualize your home as their
own, there are also other updates you can do to increase your home’s competitive edge. If you plan ahead, you can spread out the costs and time of ‘staging’ throughout the years you spend living in your home.
As you decide on improvements or changes you want to make, be sure to consider what effect they will have on the resale value of your home when it comes time to sell.
First impressions really DO count toward a buyer’s perception of your home. One of the most important features is your home’s exterior. A well manicured and landscaped yard can make a huge difference in your home’s appeal. Shrubs, trees, and other landscaping elements take time to mature to reach their fullest effectiveness in increasing the privacy and attractiveness of your yard.
And remember, when you ARE ready to sell or buy a home, you can trust the consistent, proven ability of Barbara and Bill Wilson and the Wilson Team!
Homeowners Can Plan Ahead
l Homes and real estate
Things to Consider:
do your research! Some updates may not actually increase the potential sale price on your home. Be careful not to make improvements beyond the current market values of the homes in your neighborhood.
Keep in mind that some changes need to be more recent when the time comes to sell. For example, carpeting that is 10 years old is not necessarily going to be considered ‘updated’ to buyers. this may mean you think about postponing some updates that might need to be done closer to the time you sell.
