These students received a certificate of achievement and have their work hanging in the State House where it will be on display through May 31st. Congratulations to these talented young artists. I would also like to recognize our students and staff for their ongoing commit- ment to their community. Just a couple examples of their recent generosity include their donation of profits from Hot Country Nights and Stuff the Bus to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program. They helped to raise $2,000 and 1,000lbs of food. We also had over eighty students participate in a Big Brothers Big Sisters event where they helped to raise $2,800. Thank you to the students and staff for their efforts and to the community. It is because of your support that we are able to raise so much for these great organizations. As we look ahead, there are many events at BHS to look forward to, so please visit BHS’s website (http://www.brunswick.k12.me.us/bhs) to stay up-to-date. Selected applicants for the ROTC Scholarship Pro- gram are awarded scholarships through a highly com- petitive national selection process, and receive full tuition, books stipend, educational fees, monthly liv- ing allowance, and other financial benefits at many of the country's leading colleges and universities. Lincoln As Storyteller In March, Mr. Flanagan (BHS AP US History Teacher), along with five students, were able to gather and participate in a second Civil War Roundtable pre- sentation. This time the topic was Lincoln The Humorist, Storyteller, and Poet. This was another exciting opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom. From left to right: Max Burtis, Wyatt Slocum, Charles Plummer (as Lincoln), Siona Henze, Cesar Fortin and Emily Coffin. Emily and Cesar are holding up the books they won at the auction. Traveller is the story of the Civil War told from the point-of-view of General Lee’s horse. Charles Plummer delivered an anecdote-filled discus- sion of Lincoln as a storyteller. The students learned that Lincoln’s skill at telling a story most likely came from Lincoln’s interactions with his father, with whom Lincoln had a very strained relationship, but that his ability to meet the vicissitudes of life with humor was a gift from his mother. Mr. Plummer capped his presen- tation by reading one of Lincoln’s poems. Jazz Residency BHS has been asked to host internationally known Jazz Saxophonist Dave Pietro for a three-day residency in May. Dave is an internationally known clinician, performer, and teacher. He currently is on staff at NYU and tours throughout the globe. There is a concert with our students Friday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m in Crooker. This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for our kids. Thanks for making this happen Mr. Scarpone!
