This question comes up very often, hope this helps:

While many Veterans qualify for free healthcare servicesbased on a VA compensable service-connected condition orother qualifying factor, most Veterans are asked to completean annual financial assessment, to determine if they qualifyfor free services. Veterans whose income exceed the estab-lished VA Income Thresholds as well as those who choosenot to complete the financial assessment must agree to payrequired copays to become eligible for VA healthcare servic-es. 50% or more compensable VA service-connected disabil-ities (0-40% compensable service- connected may take copaytest to determine prescription copay status

VA Eliminates Copayment for In-Home VideoTelehealth Care

Beginning May 7, the Department of Veterans Affairs will nolonger charge Veterans a copayment when they receive carein their homes from VA health professionals using videoconferencing.

“Eliminating the copayment for this service will remove anunnecessary financial burden for Veterans,” said Secretary ofVeterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “We will continue to doeverything we can to ensure that Veterans have access to thefirst-class care they have earned with their service to ourNation.”

This change will primarily benefit Veterans with limitedmobility, such as spinal cord injury patients. Whenever med-ically appropriate, VA will make the home the preferred placeof care for Veterans to ensure timely and convenient access toVA services.

For more information about telehealth, visit:http://www.telehealth.va.gov/.

Data have shown that expanded use of technology in thehome enables patients with chronic health conditions, such asdiabetes, chronic heart failure and hypertension, to live inde-pendently, actively engage in managing their health, andprevents avoidable hospitalization of patients who otherwisemay need long-term institutional care.

Home telehealth does not replace the need for nursing homecare or for traditional noninstitutional care programs. Howev-er, it enhances the ability for many veterans to better under-stand and manage chronic diseases. This partnership withtheir care team helps delay the need for institutionalizationand enables them to maintain independence for an extendedperiod of time, thus improving their overall quality of life.

Why Do We Celebrate the 4th of July?

Read this to your kids and grandkids so they can understand the real importance and meaning of this day.

Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to ourcountry? Imagine how you would feel if someone older than you (maybe an older sister or brother) kept telling you what to doall of the time and kept taking more and more of your allowance. That is how the colonists felt in the years leading up to 1776.Great Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and beganmaking plans to be able to make their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to do, so theydecided to tell Great Britain that they were becoming an independent country. (To be independent means to take care ofyourself, making your own rules and providing for your own needs.) Continued on page 6 bottom

Stranahan High School Stranahan High SchoolThe Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they appointed a committee (a group of people working together to do aspecific job) to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. The committee asked Thomas Jefferson to write a draft (first try) of the document, so he worked for days, in absolute secret, until he had written a document that he thought said everything important that the committee had discussed. On June 28, 1776,the committee met to read Jefferson's "fair" copy (he put his best ideas together and wrote them neatly.) They revised (madesome changes) the document and declared their independence on July 2, 1776. They officially adopted it (made it theirs) onJuly 4, 1776. That is why we call it "Independence Day." Congress ordered that all members must sign the Declaration ofIndependence and they all began signing the "official" copy on August 2, 1776. In January of the next year, Congress sentsigned copies to all of the states. Continued on Page 7 right column

Continued from page 6 bottom

The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece ofpaper. It is a symbol of our country's independence andcommitment to certain ideas. A symbol is something thatstands for something else. Most people can look at a certainlittle "swoosh" and know that it stands for "Nike." Well, thesigners of the Declaration of Independence wanted the citi-zens of the United States to have a document that spelled outwhat was important to our leaders and citizens. They wantedus to be able to look at the Declaration of Independence andimmediately think of the goals we should always be workingfor, and about the people who have fought so hard to makethese ideas possible. The people who signed the Declarationrisked being hanged for treason by the leaders in Great Brit-ain. They had to be very brave to sign something that wouldbe considered a crime! So every time we look at the Declara-tion of Independence, we should think about all of the effortand ideas that went into the document, and about the courageit took for these people to stand up for what they knew wasright -- independence!
