According to the statement of theTRNC Presidency, with theelection of Tatar as President, atwo-state solution has started to bediscussed and there is no groundfor a federation settlement inCyprus due to the intransigentattitude of the Greek Cypriot sidefor many years. Tatar said “Forthe first time, after 50 years effortsof the Founding President RaufDenktaş, we have reached such astage. This is very important. Atwo-state solution is beingdiscussed by the whole world.Diplomats who visit the TRNClisten to our thesis and take the

Adding that although thenegotiations have continued foryears, a solution could not bereached in Cyprus, Tatar said “TheTurkish Cypriot side said ‘yes’ tothe Annan plan. OPINION

Good Luck or Bad Luck depending on a choice of seat

By Ahmet Abdulaziz

Usually, I do not take the luckmatter very seriously. I am apractical man, so I believe that weget what we deserve. Butsometimes I come across eventsthat make me realise that indeedthere is something called goodluck or bad luck.

I was just going through some oldnews when I came across a newsitem dated 20th May 1965.

It was the news about a tragic aircrash of PK705, Boeing 720 ofPakistan International Airlines, inwhich 121 passengers and crewlost their lives. and 6 passengershad come out of the crashed planealive.

It was the inaugural flight ofPakistan International Airlines(PIA), from Karachi to London, via Dharan (Saudi Arabia), Cairo(Egypt) and Geneva. There were 6members of crew on board. I wasabout 10 years old then, but I stillremember the details of the crash.

The interesting point was thatsince it was an inaugural flight themanagement of PIA had decided totake journalists from Pakistanipress and some tour agents free ofcharge. Thus the passengers of thisfated aircraft mostly included freeriders. The idea of the PIAmanagement was to provide a

chance to the local tour operatorsto come in contact with foreigntour operators to flourish Pakistantourism. The journalists were alsotaken on board so that they wouldbe able to write their observationsabout foreign countries and alsoabout the performance of theairline.

Everything went as pre-planned.The flight had taken a short breakat Dharan (Saudi Arabia), and hadtaken off for Cairo, to be the nextstop. While descending for landingat the Cairo airport, the pilotreported a problem with the flaps. The plane crashed near the airport.Out of 127 onboard, only 6 peoplesurvived.

Recently on the internet I collectedsome old news and articles aboutthe same crash and found some

interesting material, worthy ofbeing mentioned here. Thisparticular incident proved thatthere indeed is something whichhas been considered as luck, goodor otherwise. A newspaper editor, who had arrived quite late at theKarachi airport, missed the plane. He did have arguments at theairport, to allow him to board theplane, which had not yet taken offbut had closed the door. He hadtried to contact higher officials tohelp him in this regard but hadfailed. He had returned back home, thinking that it was his bad luckthat he had missed a chance for afree foreign tour. The nextmorning when he learned that theplane had crashed, he realised thatit was in fact his good luck and notbad luck.

The six passengers of economyclass, who had survived the crash, were sitting on the last row of thefuselage, which had broken awayat the time of the crash, along withthe tail. Thus the tail and the lastrow of seats had remained intactand did not catch fire.

One of the Pakistani touroperators, who was also on boardthe plane, had wanted to take his

wife along free of charge, but thePIA management had refused to doso. So at the last moment, hebought a first class ticket for hiswife, whereas he was travelling inthe economy class of the sameplane, along with other journalistswith free passes.

He had spent some time talking tohis wife in the first class section ofthe plane when the plane hadstopped at Dharan airport. Afterthe plane had taken off fromDharan, he found another friend ofhis sitting in his seat. He forciblysent him back to his seat and sat inhis own seat, in the last row.

When the plane crashed, the sametour operator, sitting on his seat inthe last row survived, whereas hiswife sitting in the first class andhis journalist friend had died.Good luck for the man, and badluck for his wife and the journalistfriend.

I think we all come across suchsituations when our luck playssome part in the achievement ofour goals.

KAR - News Update

Jekka and Loppi go home.We had been arranging Jekka and Loppi's travel to Scotland for a while and they were all set to travel - at the same time as their owners David andKenny, a little while back. However, as has been happening all over the world, flights on their travel date were cancelled at short notice.Between us, (Kim who was then on an urgent trip to the UK, Margaret, David and Kenny in the TRNC) we all looked at possible alternatives- accompanied into the EU, a cargo import into Turkey and then out again, even a possible road trip along with the owners, plus other potentialoptions. However due to the many restrictions across most borders all options were considered too much of a risk - the girls’ welfare wasparamount and so, along with David and Kenny, we decided it was better to wait until things settled and then continue with their travel plans toEdinburgh. David and Kenny cancelled their own flights - intent on only travelling on the same day and on the same flights as their girls. And so we waited..... and waited!A possible flight option emerged - Turkish Airlines explained the schedule - however the transit time at Istanbul was very long - much longer thanusual. After discussions with the owners they felt, as we had hoped they would, that the time in transit was simply too long. Due to the uncertaintyof flights we could not risk them arriving in Istanbul and then their connecting flight being cancelled! And so we all waited and waited !At last came the call that we had all been waiting for - a new date was confidently (!!!) set with a new flight schedule. And so we waited and worried - would it be changed? Would we have to all reschedule - again - their plans? No - it was time for them to fly and everything was as per their new schedule. We arranged to collect the girls from Alsancak and take them to Ercan - getting there and back before the curfew time - although KAR does havesome exemptions for travel for KAR purposes. David and Kenny had their own taxi and permissions to travel to Ercan. Finally - with beady eyes, in UK /TRNC, peeled on schedules, Turkish Airlines updates and flight paths - Jekka, Loppi, David and Kenny flew offinto the night.Their flights went according to schedule and a few hours after departing TRNC they were on their destination flight to Edinburgh. We received the following from David and Kenny - after the girls had been collected by KAR and on arrival :" Hello KimThank you so so much for the update and picture. We will not rest easy till we see them again safe and sound. The house is so quiet which makes iteven more difficult. We will have access to mail right till boarding Istanbul and again when we arrive in Edinburgh.Hello Kim and Margaret.Pictures of the girls at their new home in Ayrshire and they have settled in well after their mammoth journey. Feeling it a little cooler than TRNCthough.Flight landed on time at 15.45 on Thursday and by the time they cleared ARC at Edinburgh it was about 5pm, the staff there could not have beenmore helpful than they were. So all told the journey for them was approximately. 25 hours in their carriers and boy were they pleased to see us aswe were them.Arrived back here about 7pm where they saw and tasted their first real snow.We cannot thank you enough for all your help and assistance"Happy Days Bonnie Jekka and Bonnie Loppi

With those aging years creeping onand having had a back operationwith spine fusion and then livingwith a false hip that needsreplacing, life is not so enjoyable, and then having had the misfortuneto take a tumble and finding yourleg attached to the false hip isbroken meant more surgery and theneed to recover.

Sadly with COVID -19 andlockdowns the opportunity forfurther treatment and rehabilitationhas been very difficult but I havebeen blessed with good friends whohave helped me with walking andexercises at home but I havebecome frustrated that I havebecome an expert hopping aroundthe house with a walking frame butfeel I am not making the best ofopportunities to regain my fitnessand mobility.

My surgeon confirmed recently mynew hip is well set and that thebroken leg is healing and until I amable to travel and seekphysiotherapy I decided I needed to

do something else so reflecting onpast experiences I decided to makea start on that long road ofrecovery

In the past, I had a martial artsbackground with time spentenjoying Tai Chi and Chi Kung(Qigong) so I headed back to thosedisciplines to make a stress free aspossible start on that long roadback to strength and mobility .

In the past, I had the pleasure ofmeeting and studying Chi Kung(Qigong) with Tarik Tekman whowith the starting of the coronavirusproblems produced a series ofYoutube home study videos thatwere published over a 15 weekperiod and I had followed these butmisfortune had prevented mecontinue my home study.

Times do change and your mindand body signal they want to makea change so this week I started overby working with the week onevideo which gave a gentle shake tothe system but a week down thetrack I am feeling smallimprovements in balance, leg

strength and the feel good factor.

So I would like to share this optionwith our readers by showing belowthe first week's Standing TreeQigong Week 1/15 Wuji video andI know that working with the other

videos over the next 15 weeks Iwill have recovered strength andmobility and hope that by thenCOVID-19 will be more undercontrol and I can then start to enjoylife out of the house again.

CyprusScene Review with Richard Chamberlain

LOCAL NEWS

The Man Behind theCamera...

Hello my name is Chris Elliott and Iwould like to welcome you to thisCyprusScene review and my guestis a well-known ex-soldier,photographer and resident ofNorthern Cyprus, Mr. RichardChamberlain.

Welcome Richard and it seems youare always busy either sendingreviews to CyprusScene forpublication or promoting yourbooks of photography from yourarmy days way back in the 50s.

So please tell us a little of yourearly days in the UK and how youcame to take photos of Cypruswhen you were in the army.

Richard: I first became interestedin photography in about 1950, whenI was 15 years old. I had a brotherwho was 7 years older than me andgood at metal work. Amazingly, hemade me a small camera out of aColmans Mustard Tin.

It took 16mm film. He also taughtme how to develop the film and putthe film into a photographicenlarger. I took the camera toschool and started taking photos ofthe boys in my class and when I gothome, I developed the film andenlarged the photos and sold themto the boys for sixpence each.

Chris: Amazing, so tell us aboutyour time in the army.

Richard: I left school when I was16 years old and went into theprinting industry as a apprenticecompositor. At 18 years old, mytwin brother, Michael and I weretold to go and join the army underthe government National Service

scheme, but before I joined thearmy, I went to the camera shop andbought a French camera calledGallus De-lux. It was £8, about 2weeks wages in those days and Itook the camera with me when Ijoined the army. After our initialbasic training we were taught somesort of "trade". I was taught to be awireless operator, and my brotherwas taught how to drive an armylorry.

Chris: Wow, so how did you starttaking photos of Cyprus and whatdid you do with them?

Richard: Soon after that we weresent to Cyprus. We could notbelieve our luck. When we arrived,we thought we had arrived inParadise. We had never beenanywhere up till then.

As soon as we were allowed sometime off, we went down to the localtown, which was Famagusta, (nowknown as Varosha or Maras). I hadmy camera with me and I soonstarted taking photos of this"Paradise" we had come to. Therewere camels walking down thestreet in Famagusta, old men withdonkeys loaded up with farmproduce, rows of "shoe shine" boyswanting to shine our army boots

and many things we had never seenbefore in England. So there wasplenty to photograph. Everywhere Ilooked, I kept taking photographs.

Luckily, the army had a "darkroom"in Famagusta for us soldiers to goand develop our films and print thephotographs. I spent a lot of myspare time in the dark room.

Before we went into the army, my 2brothers used to cut each other’shair, so besides the camera, I tookwith me I took the hair clippers. Inthose days, the young men's stylewas to have their hair fairly long, but the army didn't like long hair sothe Cypriot army barber used to cutit short. So because I would justgive them a little "trim", I soonbecame more popular than the campbarber. I used to charge sixpencefor a trim up. I soon took enoughmoney each week, not to take myarmy wages. I saved them.

With the help of a friend, wedesigned a book and put them alltogether, and had it printed. I soldquite a few books on Amazon.

In about 2015 I decided to move toNorthern Cyprus for good. I tookmy CD with all the book photos onit and had it printed again inNorthern Cyprus. I have sold orgiven away about 1,000 books.

I have presented my book to 4 NorthCyprus Presidents and now I havebeen asked to donate my collectionof photographs to an archive of OldCyprus photos that is being set upby the Nicosia museum. I amhonoured and pleased to accept.

Chris: Wow Richard thank you, that is most fascinating, and so aswe come to the end of our chat weare adding some clips of a previousvideo we made with you in the oldRound Tower in Girne some yearsago and we hope you and ourviewers will enjoy your past hobbythrough your pictures.

Thank you very much mate and Ihope to see you again soon.

RUSUK ask: First contact – would it be good for Earth?

First contact: alreadyhappened?

I understand that this is just ahypothesis but, to me, the FirstContact might have alreadyhappened in the very distant past.

I wouldn’t talk here about lots ofancient myths from all around theworld saying that our predecessorshave come down from the sky tostart a civilization on Earth. Thosemyths tell us about gods or divinestrangers from outer worlds thathave brought various knowledge tothe people of the Earth.

I do not rule out such a possibility. After all, what is a myth?Something that actually happenedin the past and then, in ametaphorical, symbolic formtransported to the generations tocome. In a shape those generationwould understand it.

Just look at the pictures here: onecan find those strange ‘bags’ and‘watch’ or ‘bracelets’ in basicallyevery ancient culture of the world, from the Shimerians to Aztecs.Yes, there’s different visual styles, based on a distinct culture. But theitems themselves are easy to spot, mystifying scholars andresearchers.

Isn’t it very, very strange?

I’ve read many times about thembefore in various sources andrecently have done some moreresearch. There’s no final scientificexplanation of what theseaccessories are. Could those things

be something of some hi-techdevices of an advancedcivilization? Why not?

My point is that these ‘Gods’ withsuch weird accessories of unknownpurpose might well be thosemystical ‘Seven Sages’, divinetutors who enlightened previouslywild people from Egypt toMesopotamia to Central America.Lots of ancient legends fromaround the globe talk about thoseteachers coming from anotherworld to help and educate. If true, then there’s two possibleexplanations: they’re either reallysome ‘out-of-Earth’ creatures orsurvivals of the vanished super-civilization that tried hard to handdown the torch of knowledge to thepeople of our planet.

So far we don’t know the answer. Thanks to new archeological data, including marine archeology, lotsof new evidence is coming up tothe surface. For instance, thefamous Goebekle Tepe site inTurkey, which mysteriouslyoriginated, according to verifiedarcheological information, around9600 BC, out of nothing - in aplace previously populated by onlyhunters and gatherers with noknowledge of agriculture.

By the way, this is the exact date, according to Plato, of the Atlantiscatastrophe. Is it a coincidence?Yes, the human-like figuresdecorating Goebekle Tepemonuments have those ‘bags’, too.

This is why I think that we mighthave already experienced thiscontact. It would take decades tostudy and prove it. But if true, those ‘Seven Sages’ have broughtthe light of knowledge to us. Thenthere is no bad in the First Contact.

***************

First contact – would itbe good for Earth?

The idea of an alien civilisationmaking themselves known to ushas intrigued me throughout mylife. As a child, I thought it wasinevitable. Sadly, as I grew olderand gained more knowledge, I havelong since come to the conclusionthat it will never happen. Ever. So Ican’t answer the question posedbecause there is zero chance of ithaving to be dealt with.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m convincedthere is plenty of life around ourever-expanding Universe, and I’veno doubt that some of it hasbecome intelligent and civilised. Orwill become so over the next fewbillion years. Or has already existedduring the last 13.8 billion years.

Two salient things will stop contacthappening. The first is the sheerdistances involved. It is so difficultto imagine just how big theuniverse is. And it’s getting biggerand bigger and bigger. Take a lookat this image taken by the Hubbletelescope. It shows thousands ofother galaxies, like our own MilkyWay. When you think that justgetting to our closest star, travellingat the speed of light, would takefour years just to get there, andgetting to our closest galaxy a littlebit more, some 2,500 years, it’simpossible to imagine how long itwould take to get to some of thosedistant galaxies in the image.

continued .... RUSUK : First contact - would it be good for Earth? The second is that if our humanrace is anything to go by,supposedly intelligent, then longbefore anyone can travel the kindof distances involved, the alienswill long since have eitherdestroyed their planet or morelikely, have destroyed themselves.

I’ve just thought of a third. Whywould any alien species bother tocontact a completely insignificantplanet, which goes around a punyyellow dwarf of a sun, where theinhabitants regularly kill eachother in wars, or annihilate eachother because of race or religion,or abuse each other just becausethey have different opinions?Anything remotely intelligentwouldn’t bother.

First Contact – Run ItOn Page 12

Most folks define First Contact asseveral Grays getting out of theirship and having a little face to facetime. Maybe scratch the dog andponder whether Bud is actuallymade from genuine Clydesdalepiss.

Nah, not too likely. But it makes agreat movie when they blow up theWhite House.

By the time we have our first faceto face meeting, first contactshould be old news. Why?

Because it most likely will not godown this way. Why? Again withthe why; you do know this is a freeBlog, right?

OK, science class time. You knowwhite light is basically all thecolors of the rainbow combined.Cool. Now if pure white lightpasses through a gas, the moleculesin that gas absorb light, so now ourrainbow in a prism has some littledips in it. Each dip corresponds tothe exact wavelength absorbed bya certain gas. We can tell what gaslight has passed through based onthe light we receive in ourtelescopes.

Here’s where things getinteresting; there are several new, powerful space telescopes comingonline shortly. If you look at aplanet and take its spectra, you cantell what kind of gasses are in itsatmosphere. There’s more to it butthat will do. So now we have ourlittle rainbow with a bunch of dipsin it.

What would happen if one of thoselittle dips corresponds to hetra-cattle-cow-o-zine? There are manyindustrial chemicals in ouratmosphere that will give us awayto folks with decent telescopes. Ifwe know what chemicals you use,

Hubble Space Telescope Image

we can tell roughly what kind oftechnology your planet has.

I have read where several seriousastronomers say with ultimateconfidence that we will findextraterrestrial life within the nextten years. No, it’s not the kind offirst contact where Will Smithjumps in his F18, but it wouldcertainly be the lead story of thecentury.

Some believe that our planet willchange; peace, love and holdinghands around the campfire. I don’tbuy it. Oh yeah, for the first fewweeks that would be the only thingon TV, but the 24 hour news cyclewaits for no Gray and old mencrave power. Do you believe forone second China or any numberof Trumpy leaders will allow theUN to decide on first contact? Doyou believe we will speak as one?Unfortunately, mankind ispredictable.

Our leaders can’t have peoplerunning around singing Imagine.Don’t worry, pretty soon thingswill settle into their old ways andthe story will settle into its rightfulplace – on page 12

Seeking TRNC permission to travel for medical treatmentBy Chris Elliott…

With Covid - 19 lockdowns inplace, it’s been necessary to applyfor permission to travel for variousreasons including medicaltreatment.

We often receive emails toCyprusScene asking for advice onthe various issues and recently wehad requests for help for a cancerpatient and accompanying carer totravel between regions for medicaltreatment and seemingly havingtheir requests refused.

There is a system in place on thelink shown below which enablesthe user to register a request totravel and the important part wethink is the reason for travel andwe have stressed the need to fillthis in confirming which Doctoryou have an appointment with andat what time and also give atelephone number so yourappointment can be clarified if theauthority needs to do so.

https://permissions.gov.ct.tr/street

The online form also asks you togive the location to visit (werecommend giving full hospitalname and who you will be seeing)and also the date of travel to andfrom and between which hourlytimes.

There is one small worry here andthat is if the person needingtreatment is being taken by anotherthen they also need to seekpermission and should clearly stateunder the reason for travel, whothey are accompanying for anappointment, who they are seeingand at what time and give atelephone number forconfirmation.

I have had reason to seekpermission to visit a hospital whichis 2.2 km away and takes around26 minutes (google maps quote)and although on the form I gave anhour travelling time (hours are theonly choice) I notice thepermission given only allowed 30minutes for travelling and the 4hours I asked for travelling andbeing attended to at the hospitalhad been reduced to 2½ hours onthe permission.

Another interesting point if youhave a mobile that predatessmartphones although you willreceive a permission notificationyou will be unable to open it toread the permission detail.

The system seems to work OK, ordoes it?

On my last visit my partner, whowas driving, also had anappointment to see a doctor about alump that had quickly developed inher armpit. On attending herappointment she was asked by thedoctor to have an ultra -scan testand when he reviewed the resultsshe was introduced to anotherdoctor who after examination saidit's probably not a major problembut should be dealt with quickly asit could be an infection andrecommended a minor operation toremove the lump the following dayand she was asked to check in atthe emergency department of thehospital the next day at 8.00 am.Super service.

The problem on returning homeshe applied for permission to traveland this was rejected so a furtherapplication with a morecomprehensive reason to travel andattend the hospital was sent andeventually a further rejection was

received on her phone at around4.00am in the morning. There isno reason given for the rejection.

So what do you do when you havehad 2 rejections to attend hospitalfor an operation and the personaccompanying you has receivedpermission to travel.

I leave our readers to puzzle thatone out.

Returning to the case of the cancerpatient seeking permission to travelI received the following messagethis morning.

“We went to Lefkosia yesterdayfrom Alsancak.

On the Tuesday prior to treatmentmy wife has to have blood testsbefore the chemotherapy, soapplied online first thing in themorning at 07.00am.

On returning from having theblood tests, still no response fromthe system, so went straight toLapta police station and got

written permission without anyproblems.

However, on returning home (Ihaven’t got mobile data roaming) Ifound that electronic permissionshad been granted!

We had to be at the hospital inLefkosia by 08-30, so expected tobe stopped at the checkpoints, butwere waved through simply bysaying we were going forchemotherapy.

Hopefully things will changesoon.”

Life is never perfect and as ourfriend says “Hopefully things willchange soon” and those receivingpermission requests may strugglewith English understanding or arejust having a bad day, just like uswhen we struggle to understandsome aspects of life in our adoptedhomeland..
