The Library is participating in the national Libraries Transform campaign, a public awareness and advocacy effort that speaks to what today’s libraries and librarians do to transform the lives of communi-ty members. Libraries contribute to education, employment, entrepre-neurship, engagement and empowerment but are often overlooked as catalysts for powerful individual and community change. Because libraries are essential to the communities we serve we are asking you to share how the library has transformed your life by filling out a “Libraries are valuable to you because …” form at any circu-lation desk or online at jvbrown.edu.
OWN-A-DAYThe library’s “Own-a-Day” program makes the perfect gift. For $100, you can Own-A-Day at the library and have your gift recognized on the receipts at circulation desks, on the flat-screen TVs inside the library, on the library’s home page, and in the library’s email and printed newsletters. This is the perfect way to honor or memorialize someone special, or celebrate a birthday or anniversary.
AN INITIATIVE OF THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
The library’s Summer Reading Program is 100% supported by donations from people just like you who realize how books and exciting programs can instill a lifelong love of learning and reading. This summer, children will build better cultural literacy with the Williamsport Crosscutters during bilingual storytimes, build a more colorful world through Art in the Alley activities, and continue to build their skills in science, technology, engineering and math with educational and enriching Friday family fun programs. We cannot do it without you. You can give on our website at www.jvbrown.edu, or by returning the card you received in the mail.
Together we can build better readers this summer and build a better world with your help and generosity!

At the Friday, March 3, book review luncheon, Dr. Oscar W. Knade, Jr. will review The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown. This nonfiction book fo-cuses on the University of Wash-ington’s eight-member rowing team as it competes for an oppor-tunity to not only race in the Berlin Olympics but also defeat Hitler’s champion team. The plot weaves this competition with stories of the lives of the American crew mem-bers, particularly the life of young Joe Rantz, a student athlete without family or support. The teamwork and determination of these young athletes, against the setting of the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler, combine to create a fast-paced, inspirational story.
K n a d e ’s experiences in rowing are what initially drew him to the book. During high school he participated in competi-tive rowing and was cox-swain of his high school’s varsity eight-
oar shell. He participated in a num-ber of races and regattas, mostly on the Schuylkill River in Philadel-phia. At the April 7 luncheon, Dr. Caroline Payne will review Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of Butterflies. It is an historical novel based on the true story of the three Mirabal sisters who were murdered in 1960 during the time of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. A fourth sister lives to tell their story. The book was nominated for a Nation-al Book Critics Circle Award in 1994, chosen as a selection for the Big Read program, and the story was adapted into a feature film in 2001. The Port Washington School District banned the book because it detailed the construction of a bomb.
Payne chose the book be-cause it details important historical events in the Dominican Republic. It is a powerful portrayal of the role the Mirabel sisters played in de-feating a dictator. Alvarez brings to life the plight of women in a patri-archal society. By giving each sister a voice, the author illustrates how they deal with their roles as women in this society, and how they ulti-mately help liberate their country. Come and enjoy Warrior Blue Coffee – coffee produced by Dominican Republic farmers who are working to improve the quan-tity and quality of their product by partnering with Lycoming College.
