Dennis Croft nominated Dennis O’Rourke as life member of Brothers Rugby Club in recognition of both his playing and coaching career at Brother Rugby Club. Carried Unanimously.

8.0 General Business 8.1 8.2

Junior Co-operation Agreement. Negotiations with Brothers Junior Rugby Club continue. The co-operation agreement has been significantly amended in the last 12 months. Further meetings had been scheduled to continue discussions. There was reticence on the part of the Junior Club. Amalgamation of the clubs was possible though not an easy process. National Rugby Competition. There remained little direction concerning this concept despite its commencement in 2014. Brothers has had informal discussions regarding forming a partnership/joint venture to put a team in the NRC with other Brisbane Clubs. To be further considered by the committee when other information is available.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As I highlighted in the President’s Report for the 2013 AGM the current year presented us we some challenges and to cope with those we needed to make appropriate and tough decisions. I believe we did that fairly well and the report below will indicate that we remain on the right track to enhancing the position of the Club within Rugby circles and the community generally. The report will also indicate that we have a long way to go, as does Club Rugby in a changing environment, and that success in achieving our objectives will require a team effort from all those with a stake in the future of the Club. Financial Report Firstly our financial state at year end is good, if a little tight. Treasurer Des Hogan will report a trading loss of approximately $12,000 and that our cash-flow position at 30 September is reasonably strong. The loss arises in part from the failure of the QRU to pay the net $20,000 funding promised in this financial year. Our conditional QRU funding has not been received partly because we fought, with other clubs, in particular our Junior Club, to find a more acceptable solution to the ARU’s financial problems than an untimely and ill-considered levy. Whereas that matter has been resolved in favour of junior clubs, our funding remains unpaid as the QRU changes the goal posts on conditions applying. We confidently expect that for 2015 there will be no parent body funding for the first time in many years and that amateur club players will be charged a levy to play the game, unrelated to the costs associated with providing the competition in which they play. Overall our revenue has been affected by the funding issue referred to above, a reduced profit from our annual test lunch, when compared with the bumper Lions test result, and the termination of operations by Fratelli early in the financial year. Increases in revenue occurred principally through the donations contributed by a few generous members to the lights funding appeal, through small increases in sponsorship, mainly due to the sponsor support achieved for the Roma match, player subscriptions and catering for functions in the Green Shed and Jacaranda Room. We had hoped for reasonable levels of membership fees and profits from the 200 Club but overall complacency amongst supporters and players continues to hinder us and go some-way to lessening the enthusiasm of Committee members. From our cash flow we have funded the rebuild of the retaining wall and a significant contribution to the Crosby Park Lighting Project. The financial year ending 30 September 2015 will be a financial challenge for us as we face; a year without parent body funding; a fundamental change to player subscription model which could have significant financial ramifications; a year without a northern hemisphere Rugby tour on which to base our annual lunch; and continuing maintenance and upgrading of the facility. Football As reported last year we made a significant change to the coaching structure of Premier Grade and consequently the administration of the Club.

Thanks to Matt Kaye’s acceptance of the change, and the ability of Anthony Mathison, the result was more than pleasing. Matt dealt with the change maturely and then showed why he is an administrator that Brothers is very lucky to have. I am sure Matt continues to harbour coaching ambitions, and where we can accommodate those we will, but currently he is exceeding our expectations for quality administration. Anthony was a success in the coaching arena and will continue to improve the chances of the Premier Grade teams to capture a premiership in the near future. In fact Premier Grade achieved the same result as in 2013, third overall, and defeated in the minor semi-final, but the signs are there for 2015 and beyond, and I believe we have the right structure to get the results we are looking for. Premier Reserve at a time during the season faced a very ordinary year but turned themselves around remarkably and contested the preliminary final admirably, but unsuccessfully. Premier Colts were performed above expectation and contested the Grand Final against Sunnybank. Unfortunately for a 2nd year in a row a game ended in a draw and the competition rules meant the opposition were declared winners. Anyway congratulations to the Colts, and the coaches particularly Ben McCormack who continues to show extraordinary ability at the Colts level - your season was a credit to you as players and coaches. The Fire Ants (Normanby Cup) were overwhelmed in their Grand Final by a side they had narrowly beaten in the major semi. They tried hard but in the conditions a very big team was always going to win and Logan was just that. The other sides played well at times and tried admirably to be placed better than they eventually were, but injuries throughout the club and some retirements told and by the end of the season they had fallen away. We certainly did not get the representation in the Queensland NRC teams we wanted, and probably deserved, and so we have two additional focuses for 2015; improvement in our representation and a role for players who want to be involved in football between August and October. The NRC did not have any other effect on our club affairs but may result in a movement of players with ambitions to play NRC away from the clubs with low representation to clubs that were favoured. It was disappointing for us that none of our coaches or administrators were able to join with any NRC teams, until Anthony Mathison had a late call up to the coaching ranks. Congratulations to Anthony and players Matt Mafi, Sam Greene, Clynton Knox, Pierce Fitzgerald, Giles Beverage and Luke Beauchamp who played in the Queensland NRC teams and Ben Suisala who played for the NSW Country Eagles team. The Reds failed to engage with Dom Shipperley, who was coming off contract, and wisely Dom negotiated with and then moved to the Melbourne Rebels. Dom played well for Brothers whilst a Club member and will be missed in Premier Grade. Facility Improvements During the early part of this financial year we were awarded a Get Playing Grant of $100,000, by the State Government, for our Jack Ross Oval Lighting Project. The project caused some anxiety from a planning and a funding view point, but the lights are now there for all to see.

We are extremely grateful to Guy Ledwidge (Ledwidge Electrical and Design), the contractor, and as you are aware, strong sponsor and supporter of the Club, not only for managing the project, but for the very significant donation he made to assist with the management and funding of sub-contractors and their variations. We were reliant on the Juniors for funding assistance and they provided the amount they had committed to in a timely manner. That demonstrates the power of the two clubs working together to maintain and improve facilities. Faced with a funding short-fall, after the Club outlaid $30,000 from its cash flow, we appealed to members to support a fund raising initiative to get the balance of $20,000 required. We are very grateful for the support that the initiative received, particularly from Jim Gorman, a long- time supporter of the Club who made a significant generous donation. For a number of years the fact that we hadn’t replaced the retaining wall near the Can Shop has been an embarrassment for the administration as it reflected our lack of funds to carry out infrastructure improvement. At the beginning of the year we determined that we could afford the improvement, with a little help from the builder Betterlay Block Laying, and went ahead; the result is an improvement sorely overdue. The majority of the infrastructure changes that have occurred over the last several years involve our partnership with the Brisbane City Council and of course the lights project would not have been possible without the State Government grant. We are very grateful to both government bodies and the elected representatives for the electorates in which Brothers is located – David McLachlan BCC and Tim Nicholls Treasurer of the Queensland State Government. We continue to work hard at these relationships and are well supported in this by Jim Brabon, and John McKay at BCC and Kerry Partridge at State Government level. Brothers Junior Rugby Club Inc. The relationship between Brothers and Brothers Juniors has come a long way over the past couple of years and a partnership of tenure at Crosby Park is imminent. I would like to thank Junior President Hans Pearson for his support over the last 12 months and look forward to 2015. Sponsors Given that sponsorship income is the backbone of continued success of the Club we have visited, and negotiated with, most sponsors from 2014 and can report that we will be supported into 2015 by the vast majority of sponsors from the year recently completed. All sponsors are important to Brothers however we are delighted to announce the continuation of Imagetec as the major sponsor for 2015, the eighth year of their support. We are indebted to Wade Ranson and Tom Ritchie for their involvement with Brothers and to the Head Office Management for their affirmation of the relationship. It would be remiss of me not to publicly thank Guy Ledwidge for his support in all areas of electrical maintenance around the Club, but in particular his support in assisting us to complete the Lighting Project. Without providing the detail I must acknowledge that without his support we could have floundered financially during construction.

An initiative that paid remarkable financial dividends in 2014, and changed our perspective on the promotion of Club Rugby, was playing a Premier game in Roma, at the suggestion of the management of Mining Accommodation Services (MAS), James Donnelly and Peter Conway. Early discussions and negotiations for 2015 indicate support for that initiative will continue and grow. Volunteers We have an able body of volunteers supporting the Club and ensuring we achieve our objectives year on year. Without these generous people the Club would not exist and players would not have a venue or a Club from which to enjoy the game. Firstly I would like to thank the Management Committee, and in particular those who work on sub-committees like the Fund-Raising Committee. Des Hogan, now well into his seventies is a main-stay of the Committee as Treasurer and we thank him for his efficient and dedicated service. Committee and players alike are grateful to the Coaches and Managers of teams who freely give of their time to ensure the players are able to perform at the best of their abilities. Thanks to home game volunteers be they those at the barbecue, the Hobbits behind the bar, Tracey Silvester on score board duty and those who help with the after-game clean-up. As we move to improve our home game offerings for 2015 and introduce new fund-raising initiatives we will seek to strengthen our army of volunteers and hope you that read this will be generous with your support and your time. Season 2015 The 2015 season will begin in February with trials and the first Premier Competition game will occur on March 7. The season will end for Grand Finalists on August 2. We are considering some changes for 2015 that could strengthen our financial position. In addition some changes are inevitable as administrators of Rugby at all levels deal with the parlous financial state of the game. There will be no parent body funding for the first time in over 20 years and in fact players will be charged a levy to play. The whole registration system will be governed by a registration system made necessary by the desire of the ARU and the QRU to require players to contribute to their running costs. We will consider a charge for patrons to attend home games mainly because we have a need to continue to raise revenue to meet our running costs and because patrons have been reluctant to support fund-raising initiatives such as paying membership fees and joining the gaming clubs we have attempted to set up to augment revenue. We will prioritise our initiative to develop opportunities for sponsors and business associates to engage through dedicated functions and a special database. We will work at improving our status as part of the local community particularly amongst local businesses and their employees.

We will encourage everyone associated with the Club to support Ruggers Restaurant, which has now opened and will continue to trade through a trial period before entering into a long term agreement with the Club. Your continued support will ensure that that agreement is compelling for Ruggers proprietors. We will continue to strive to a more formal arrangement with Brothers Juniors Rugby Club and together with the Juniors and the Brothers Rugby Club Foundation the improvement of the facilities. Finally I would like to thank all associated with the club for their support and look forward to an exciting 2015.

TREASURER’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the Treasurer’s Report for Brothers Rugby Club Inc for 2014, together with the Audited Financial Statements for the year ended 30 September 2014.

The Club incurred a Trading loss of $12220 after providing for depreciation of $26664.

The main items to be reported upon are:

Income for the year was $626655, slightly down on last year and includes $42000 as donations which we didn’t have in the previous year.

Bingo profit is down some $7000 for two reasons, namely: a. An unsuccessful major bingo promotion. b. Increase in rental levy to assist in covering the cost of a major upgrade to the air

conditioning - this increase was agreed to by all stakeholders.

Expenses are $638875, again slightly lower than 2013. Some overspends were: a. Water Rates $29000. This followed the installation of a new meter after investigation by

the supplier. b. R & M Grounds. $1300. Building of a new retaining wall between the Jacaranda Room and

the can shop. c. Coaching fees paid to Premier Grade coaches following their appointment.

As at 30 September 2014, our cash at Bank was $89622 down from $130476 last year. This reduction is represented by contribution to major expenditure on the retaining wall and the lighting upgrade.

We acknowledge a grant from the Queensland Government for $110000, as a contribution to the lighting upgrade.

Again, it has been another difficult year financially as Brothers, along with other clubs, have been denied annual grants from the ARU/QRU even though we had been advised we would receive around $25000 for the year under review.

I extend my sincere thanks to our President, Jim Frayne and the Committee for their contribution and a very special thanks to our group of loyal volunteers in all capacities whose efforts enable the Club to continue to be successful, on and off the field.

Denis O’Rourke The R.G.J. Price Coaches Award “THE RONNIE” For outstanding service to the Club in the role of a team Coach This trophy is named in honour of a great Brothers man. Ronnie’s coaching career is second to none with a career spanning from 1978 to 2015 and an outstanding strike rate of 11 Premierships from 13 Grand Finals. He’s probably most famous for coaching the Club to 5 consecutive “A” Grade Premiership from 1980 to 1984.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

2014 has definitely been an action packed year with many achievements both on the field and off the field. Our on field performance continues to develop as we strive to provide the players and community with a program that is the regarded as the best in Brisbane. From Recruitment to High Performance we are aiming to provide a product that can cater for everyone’s needs whilst providing an entertaining brand of rugby which spectators love to watch. The season kicked off on Saturday 22nd March with a home match against Sunnybank and concluded on Sunday 17th August. The club would like to congratulate all players, coaches, managers and volunteers for their efforts throughout the year in particular those teams that progress to the finals. Below is a breakdown of final team standings after the Home & Away Season. Premier Grade was competitive throughout the season however need to find that little bit extra during the finals to go all the way. Premier Reserves started the season slow then kicked into gear mid season to win 8 consecutive games leading into the finals. Premier Colts played great rugby throughout the season and were rewarded with the chance to playoff for the Premiership in the Grand Final. Unfortunately a draw at fulltime in the Grand Final saw the result go the way of Sunnybank. The remaining grades had their ups and downs during the season and a high turnover of players definitely had a major effect on the team’s performances. A major positive of the 2014 season is the number of younger players coming through the grades. The recruitment and retention of the Colts over the last couple of years has reinvigorated the club and we are now seeing the benefits. It is extremely important that we continue to develop our Players & Coaches so that they can achieve their ambitions and goals. We will ensure that the pathway from Brothers to professional rugby is reachable and work hard to provide those opportunities. The club has made some large steps forward off field over the last 12 months particularly with the upgrade of the facility. The change room building received an upgrade thanks to a few volunteer players, the retaining wall was constructed beside the loading dock area, and significant works were completed by the BCC at the Southern End of the field which has improved the spectator viewing areas around Jack Ross Oval.

In addition we also have new field lights on both the Vic Walsh Oval and Jack Ross Oval allowing the club to play Premier Matches under lights. All this work wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the players, Sponsors, Brothers Juniors and Government Agencies. We club conducted a number of fund raising events throughout 2014 which included the Croft Hardman Lunch, Ladies Day, French Test Luncheon and the annual Northside Sevens Tournament. All these events were well attended and raised some much needed funds for the club. We also had a number of events based around the Home & Away Season including Anzac Day Clash, Sponsors Day, Corporate Tent Days and Old Boys Day against GPS which was probably the biggest crowd at a club match in Brisbane since Tony Shaw graced the turf at Crosby Park. Throughout 2014 we have run a number of functions in the club and this has been a great source of revenue for the club. We can cater for small to large functions and meetings to parties. This will continue to develop in 2015 as we see huge potential to increase our function business and generate a healthy revenue stream. I would like to thank all the club sponsors who have been fantastic to work with, building relationships and providing opportunities for business through Brothers is what we will continue to provide. We will look to increase our Sponsorship base in 2015 and continue to engage with the local businesses in the area to become the local footy club that everyone wants to be a part of. Finally I would like to thank the committee in particular Jim & Des for their continued support, the coaches and managers who make my job easier throughout the season and the players for their efforts during a tough season.

CROFT & HARDMAN Legends Lunch – 7 March 2014

Over 170 people attended the Croft Hardman Lunch last Friday afternoon at the Tattersall’s Club. Hosted by Brothers legend Chris 'Buddha' Handy the day raised much needed funds to go towards the upgrade of Crosby Park Precinct. It was a great tribute to Wallaby, Queensland and Brothers Legends; David Croft & Sean Hardman who took centre stage with Rupert McCall to talk about stories from their illustrious playing days. We would like to thank the support from the event partners and the table captains to make this day a success. Over $10,000 was raised on the day.

”Battle of the Bush” – 5 July 2014

NEW ZEALAND MARIST COLTS TOUR – 15-24 August 2014

The NZ Marist Rugby Football Federation is undertaking the 40th Annual NZ Marist Colts tour. The tour will be for eight days covering the Wellington and Upper South Island Regions and will run between Friday 15th August and Sunday 24th August 2014. The tour involves a player from each of the 29 Marist affiliated Clubs in New Zealand as well as invitations to the Marist associated rugby club organisations in Argentina, Brisbane, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. The tour is another great opportunity for these young men to mix and learn from each other both rugby and life skills as well as experience cultural differences. They play four games in the eight days and visit many schools as part of the tour where they hand out sporting gear and give talks to the school children. While this is a great experience for the school children it also provides great personal growth experiences for the players. SATURDAY 16 August

THOMAS KEVIN BOURKE

Kevin Bourke, a former Queensland and Wallabies representative, sadly passed away on 27 May 2014, at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, having suffering a stroke last week.

Kevin, originally from Kingaroy, attended Downlands Sacred Heart College in Toowoomba during the late 1930’s before taking up a job with Shell Co in Brisbane. He will famously be remembered as Downlands’ first Wallaby.

Kevin represented Queensland in 1941, 1947 & 1948 and earned selection in the Wallabies following strong performances in the centres against the 1947 touring All Blacks. Kevin would go on to play 16 matches for the Wallabies, including one Test match.

Kevin was part of the Wallabies historic world tour of Britain, Ireland, France and North America, which ran from July 1947 through to March of 1948, and consisted of five Test matches and 36 minor tour matches.

The nine-month journey was one of the last of that era of epic tours when transport was mostly by ship and when the tourists were whole-heartedly welcomed by rugby fans and townships, civic officials and royalty.

The squad was captained by Bill McLean and also featured fellow Queenslanders Keith Winning, Clem Windsor, Eddie Broad, Graeme Cooke and Bob McMaster.

Kevin played his club Rugby at Brothers alongside fellow Wallaby tourist Bob McMaster, and his brother, Jimmy Bourke, also represented Queensland in 1948.

Kevin Fegan, the FATHER OF CROSBY PARK (longest serving Life Member of Brothers Rugby Club), sadly passed away on 27 June 2014, aged 97. Kevin was awarded Life Membership in 1955 after a long association with the Club as a player, coach, masseur & committee member. Family and Friends were invited to attend The Little Flower Catholic Church, 80 Turner Road, Kedron for 10.30 am, Rosary and Funeral Mass at 11.00 am, on Friday, 4th July, 2014, and thereafter to Pinnaroo Cemetery, Bridgeman Downs.

BON MAUI – TEST DEBUT

Cook Islands are now preparing for the biggest game in their country’s history as they prepare to take on Fiji; where a win will give the Cook Islands direct entry into the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. Despite preparing to take on a team that are the current champions of the Pacific Nations Cup and ranked 11th in the world, the Cook Islands, who are ranked 45th, remain confident ahead of their showdown with Fiji. Brothers’ own Bon Maui was selected as a member of The Cook Islands full 24 member squad for their Rugby World Cup Qualifier against Fiji and went on to make his Test Debut for the Cook Island in this Test Match. Former Brothers & Queensland Reds player, Joelin Rapana also made his Test Debut in this match. Fiji went on to defeat Cook Islands 108-6 in Lautoka to qualify for the 2015 Ruby World Cup.

At the Reds Gala Ball held on 29 August 2014, two of Brothers Rugby Club’s finest were inducted into the Queensland Rugby Union Hall of Fame. Austin Sarsfield Ireland GRALTON St. Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace Q.R.U. Life Member – 1904 COACH: Australia 1914; Queensland 1909-14; Brothers 1905-10 PREMIERS 1907 PLAYER: Australia 1899, 1903 (3 tests GB (2), NZ (1)) Queensland 1893-1903 (29 matches, NSW (23), NZ (4), GB (2)) Queensland Tour to New Zealand 1896 Alhambra 1889-93; Boomerang 1894-98 PREMIERS 1894; Valley 1899; Merthyr 1900; North Brisbane Electorate 1901-03 PREMIERS 1901, 1903 BIOGRAPHY: Prominent CBC Old Boy’s Tom Gaffney, Austin Gralton, Voy Oxenham and Frank Ahern, commenced negotiations with the QRU Executive in 1904 after it was identified that the existing electorate system was about to be scrapped and a Club system was going to be re-established for the 1905 season. Our Founding Fathers saw an opportunity to found an Old Boys Football Club for past students of the Christian Brothers Colleges. Who would of thought that the Club they founded would be the template for an uniquely Queensland Association that over the next century, would see the rise of 12 Rugby Union & 28 Rugby League Clubs throughout the State. Following the successful negotiations with the QRU Executive and with the support of CBOBA’s Vice-President Reverend Father Thomas Hayes and prominent Catholic Parliamentarian Frank McDonnell MLA, the Founding Fathers decided to approach St. Joseph’s College (Gregory Terrace) headmaster Brother Paul Aloysius Furlong and Brother William Mark Reidy to aid in the foundation of the new Christian Brothers Football Club and permission to use the school’s badges and colours. Aussie Gralton became the Club’s foundation coach of the Senior Grade team and went on to coach the team to the Club’s inaugural Premier Grade Premiership in 1907. Gralton died on 26 June 1919 at the age of 46; a victim of the influenza pandemic that was sweeping the world. At his funeral he was eulogised as “a player who never squeaked, an outstanding coach, always played to win and was always friends with his opponents.”

The Minor Premiers Trophy for Premier Reserve, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade were originally awarded to the 2nd Round Champions up until the 1978 season. The Keith Horsley Memorial Trophy was awarded to the 2nd Round Champions from 1946 to 1999 until it was reinvested as the Minor Premiers Trophy for the 2000 season.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Welcome, As another rugby season draws to a close, it goes without saying – what a cracker! The influx of new Colts to Brothers, coupled with the passion and enthusiasm of the second year lads has really taken a hold of the club and what we aim to achieve on and off the field. The week in, week out, filling of the hill has been impressive. When the boys playing at 3pm were asked, “What did you think of the game?” The response was always: “Geeze, Colts Corner was killing it!” I applaud the efforts put in by the Colts this year as you are the driving force behind the majority of what happens culturally and socially at the club. The commitment from the coaching staff and managers is something which can go unnoticed. Their week in, week out, preparation is tireless and they cannot be thanked enough. To the team at Junction Road Physio, the professionalism you bring to our game is outstanding. Thank you for keeping us in one piece! With five teams in the finals series this year, two of which are in grand finals, I would like to congratulate the Premier Colts squad and the FIRE ANTS squad on their efforts in securing these births. A rugby club cannot run without the help of volunteers! The efforts put in throughout the year are astronomical. From people setting up the fields in the morning, to the hobbits in the can bar, cooking the BBQ and John Sayer snapping away at the end of the field: Thank you for everything you do! Thank you, too, for the endless and tireless efforts put in from Matt Kaye and the committee. Thank you for the financial supports and investments put in willingly from our sponsor. It is something that cannot be more appreciated. I hope we can continue our ongoing partnerships for years to come. A big congratulation goes to all the boys who made representative teams in 2014. Your commitment to the game is something all of us are proud of! The Club is very proud of your success! Andrew ‘Jack’ Coady, you’ve been an inspiration to me, players and the Club! Congratulations on playing 200 first grade games. That is an achievement most of us will never see again in our playing careers. Premier “A” Grade SEMI-FINALIST, Pilecki-Shaw Cup Winners

The 2014 Premier Grade season proved to be a successful one for the club with the emergence of a wealth of young talent proving themselves at Premier Rugby level. Brothers eventually lost to a quality GPS outfit in the Minor Semi-Final, but a firm resolve to build on 2014 was clearly evident in the aftermath. Following trial matches against Sunnybank, GPS and University, Brothers commenced the season by hosting Sunnybank in Round 1 in what was the club’s 2000th Premier Grade fixture. Brothers were eventually victorious 18-12 in front of large home crowd, which set a determined tone that remained for the rest of the season. Subsequent victories against Bond University, Souths, Wests, Norths and Easts followed, seeing Brothers undefeated after 6 competition rounds. The next three matches against GPS, University and Sunnybank saw the group experience a mid-season slump of sorts, losing three consecutive fixtures. However, due to the resolve of the players, the season was quickly turned around seeing Brothers embark on another 6 match winning streak, including convincing performances to defeat Easts 26-9 at Bottomley Park and a strong 35-24 victory over GPS at Crosby Park. These performances positioned the team well to push for a top two finish but ultimately a close defeat to University in the final round ended this opportunity, leaving the team in third position on the table at the end of the regular season. 2014 witnessed many individual highlights, including Andrew Coady’s 200th Premier Grade match – a truly remarkable achievement in the modern era - and Damon Murphy’s 150th Premier Grade match. Four players: Luke Beauchamp, David Campbell, James Carter and Iosefo Tabalala each played their 50th Premier Grade match for Brothers during the course of the season. Additionally, Giles Beveridge ended the Premier Rugby season as the competition’s leading try scorer crossing for 16 tries, including a 5 try performance against Norths. Finally, I wish to acknowledge and thank all members of the coaching, management and medical staff for their professionalism, efforts and good humour which they brought to the group throughout the season. Their dedication and support was invaluable throughout the course of the year. Additionally, the support provided from Director of Rugby, Matt Kaye, and the committee ensured that the services offered to the players were of an enviable standard. Special mention must be made of the club’s efforts to organise a home match at Roma, which provided players with a unique rugby experience and one which is sure to develop further in future years. While 2014 provided glimpses of the potential of the playing group, I look forward to 2015 with great optimism at what can be achieved with continued hard work and the determination that was so clearly evident in 2014.

Premier Reserve Grade PRELIMINARY FINALIST

Reserve Grade in 2014 was a great experience for all involved. With an exciting bunch of colts coming through to grade rugby, some second year players, coupled with a few very experienced Premier Grade players we were all very excited in terms of what the year would bring. Things did not start how we expected however losing our first game by a big margin and then a draw against Souths at Souths. After a couple of close games against Norths which we lost and then a win against Easts we were ready for a big turn out against GPS at GPS. After being totally outplayed and out muscled in every part of the game GPS ran away 32-0 victors. We finished the first round winning only 3 games from 8. After a meeting with the players on a cold Tuesday night the team decided that the year was not over if we played to our strengths and trusted each other more on the field. With 8 games to go and a possible 40 points on offer we were not going to submit and play out the rest of the year for the fun of it. The start of the second round saw us upset Sunnybank 36-15 and then easily dismantled Bond University and Souths. All of a sudden the playing group began to believe in the structures and more importantly in each other and we were on our way. Norths at Brothers was classed as our pay back game as they defeated us in the first round and after accounting for them 45-0, the entire team knew we were building to something special. A few more wins had us in the top 4 with GPS and Uni to go. The GPS game was one of the most exciting of the year with a try after the siren to win it. This is the first time we have beaten GPS in 5 years in this grade. A final round game against Uni and a win here would mean we went through the second round undefeated. After an early scare we managed to put on 29 unanswered points to secure a 29-7 victory. Our first Semi Final was against Sunnybank and although down 28-10 at half time a classy performance in the second half saw us run away with the game 39-28. Next up was Uni in the knock out Semi. Although we trained well and prepared well we did not play our best rugby on the day. A somewhat disappointing end to the year as Uni started well and continued to dominate the play until eventually securing a 25-17 win. With Des Kissane & Simon Price as fellow coaches, we thoroughly enjoyed the year with this group and hope the majority will be back next year striving for higher honours at Brothers.

Division One – 1st Grade

2014 was not a great season for First Grade finishing 6th on the competition ladder. The side had massive potential and should have made the final series. A number of factors were responsible. The main one being lack of attendance by players at training. The commitment in 2015 needs to be a lot better for First Grade to make the top four. Injuries in the higher grades did not help our cause, we did not play the same combination of players all season and over fifty players played first grade. External problems such as University exams and work commitments also made the season difficult for selection purposes. Better communication needs to be established in 2015. On a positive note we were quite a young side with some players from the previous season’s colt’s teams making their appearance in first grade and showing they had what it takes to play at this level. Sam O’Reilly in particular was promoted to reserves half way through the season and held his spot in the highly competitive loose forward position. Other players to stand out were James Briskie, David Corbenici, Ross Evans, Tim Lollback, Billy Leal and Andrew Price. A big thank you must go to all the reserves who sat on the bench from second grade and to the first grade players who sat on the bench for Reserves. The efforts of John Diamond our manager and Matt Nichols assistant coach, thanks for your tireless efforts during the season. Thanks Matt Kaye for his assistance during my first season at Brothers. I look forward to a much more successful season in 2015.

Division One – 2nd Grade

Season 2014 was an indifferent year for 2nd Grade with new coaching team and large influx form 2013 Colts. The New Year started well with a mix of experience, youth and everyone enthusiastic during pre –season and showing some good form in trials with wins over Sunnybank & University with a tight loss to GPS. Then came the curse of the season long & ending Injuries to some key players Daniel Kent, Liam Blake, Felix Sheahan & early captain Navi after our home game against East’s and unavailable players. By the finish of the first round of matches we had used a total of 48 different starting players. The large numbers in relation to player rotations led to difficulty in forming combinations, and ultimately left us to finish the season in 6th spot on the ladder. We were able to build on some solid performances in the last few games of round one with solid games against GPS only losing by 2 points and claiming the clubs only point against GPS that day. Round 2 provided us with some real highlights we win a gutsy win against Sunny bank and two really polished performances against East and our best performance of the year a 48 – 7 win away to West’s. The last 2 rounds provided a big challenge hosting GPS and finishing the season away to UNI. We defiantly saved our best to last we every member of the team leaving it all on the park and showing true Brothers sprit and fitting to end. Although we lost both game the boys showed true club spirit & passion. Big thanks also goes to Kieran Moffat who lead the team on & off the field for the majority of the season and did an outstanding job assisting John & myself with setting stands and dragging everyone else along. Also thanks to Adrian Dixon for his efforts throughout the year that greatly improved our scrum, tight forward play and general inspiration to all the players.

As a whole, the lower grades predominately trained as a group (1sts, 2nds and 3rds) which helped lift training standards and aided players in being exposed to higher levels of play. Having new coaches in each grade helped alleviate some of the personality issues seen in previous years which also had a positive effect on the morale of the squad. Some things to be worked on for the next season would be to develop a leadership group to lead from the front and to look to at training to avoid complacency and the occasional lack of focus. It is commonly accepted that the attitude at training is carried over to the game, and at times the players’ attitude to training lacked enthusiasm and snappiness. The year definitely unearthed some good young players that will be better for the season this year with end of season awards going to the following.

Other players of note from the season: Nathan Shewry, Felix Sheahan, Daniel Kent, Evan Kostowski, James Briskie, Morgan Papi, John Kennedy, Dan Tweedy and a skinny kid that started the year in Colts then 3rd grade and played the last 4 rounds with us Jono See. There is a lot of talent, depth and potential with the lower grade at Brothers. If can manage to keep everyone of the park week in week out. 2015 will be a very successful year for the Brethren across all grades.

Division One - 3rd Grade

While the team started the year in the winner's circle, it soon turned into a long hard slog with the team finishing 7th on the ladder. While only finishing with two wins from the season, the results do not reflect how close the team was to winning many of the matches, including a one point loss to eventual premiers Souths. With many injuries throughout the club and the resulting loss of players particularly from 3rd grade, it was good to see the dedication of many of the players to keep turning up week after week. The team was also made up of mainly new, young guys to the club and it was great to see them come together and improve so much as the season progressed. Special thanks has to go to some of the Friday Night Bhoys who came down and filled in for us when we were short despite playing the night before, and a special mention to Landis Condon who did this week after week. Thanks would also have to go to the Army boys that came down near the end of the season to play for us when we were getting desperate for players. I would also like to thank Tim Collyer, Bobby Longtime, David Ingram and Jimmy Vail for providing some old heads for a young team and instilling passion for the jersey and pulling the team together when times were tough. Lastly I would like to thank Glen Boevink, my co-coach, for helping me throughout the year as well as John Burton and Greg Beaver for providing me with advice when I needed it. Also thank you to Sandy Prestedge for making sure the book was filled in properly after every match and David Magoffin for helping with the gear each week.

Premier Colts GRAND FINALIST

Looking beyond the devastating result in the 2014 Grand Final, it was otherwise another highly successful year for Premier Colts and the Club. With a good sprinkling of premier colts remaining from our popular 2013 campaign, the recruitment emphasis focused on a few key positions as well consolidating the depth of numbers throughout the colts program. Fortunately, a lot of talent was graduating from schools that we have recently strengthened our relationships with; St Joseph’s Colleges; Gregory Terrace & Nudgee, St Patricks, Downlands and Brisbane Grammar School being the main contributors of players. The colts program in 2014 once again improved on its overall numbers, which in turn enhanced the depth of the top side. Pre-season was an extremely busy time for all coaching and management staff as we had a significant number of new faces to familiarise ourselves with. The trials against three top sides were all successful, which gave the squad some confidence moving into the start of the season. This was evident in the Premier Colts sides 5-1 stats after our first six games. Highlights of our early rounds included;

- Sam Walters and Sam Hyne finishing fantastic, wide running team tries in what was a very high quality 16-8 win

over Sunnybank;

- Jake Gagel and George Partridge scoring two and three tries respectively in individually dominant displays in a

54-4 demolition of traditional rivals Norths at Hugh Courtney Oval; and

- Our second row pairing of Michael Gilbert and Joe Kendall sharing the spoils of three tries in a clinical 41-12

thrashing at Souths.

The team had a few set-backs mid-season, with injuries to key players and University exams hindering a lot of training and game days, which affected the team’s momentum. Dropping 4 of 5 mid-season fixtures, we found ourselves sitting in fifth place on a very congested ladder. To guarantee a top 4 finish and a finals birth, we needed to have an unbeaten run home. This was a task the boys took to with enthusiasm and determination. After wins against Wests and North’s, front rowers Zac Shanks and Andrew Gough with outside backs Will Shipperley and Kris Larosa, stood tall and were physically brutal in a 46-7 dismantling of Easts at the Tiger Den on ladies day - sending us into the last two rounds to face 1st and 2nd spot on the ladder. Henry Fitzgerald and Paddy James then led the team to an inspired win over the hot favourites GPS in a cracking game on Old Boys Day at Crosby park. University at St Lucia was a tough way to finish the season and we looked beaten with 1 minute remaining and on our own 10metre line; but a brilliant back row move saw Angus Fowler slip a pass to winger George Partridge who scorched the turf like a greyhound in an amazing 90m try. To win 5 from 5 to finish the season was a credit to all of the individuals in the squad who showed determination, belief and a great work ethic. Week 1 of our finals campaign brought the knockout semi-final, again against University. The escape act the previous week and a bolstered University outfit brought a lot of nervous excitement and energy. However, the team’s confidence and momentum was evident throughout the first half as Brothers played a far superior brand of finals football, dominating field position and frustrating University into errors. Tries to Sam Hicks, Will Shipperley and George Partridge secured an 18-12 win and a berth in the preliminary final. Here we met early season favourites and Minor Premiers GPS. Brothers prevailed, out enthusing GPS in attack and defence, and controlling the tempo of the game. Stuart McReight, Alistair Harper and Jay Nyssen were in the thick of everything with outstanding work rates that paved the way to a team victory 23 points to 18 - a Grand Final against Sunnybank awaited. Contesting the first Brothers Colts’ grand final since 2005, the team started like seasoned professionals. Kicking to the corners, controlling possession, defending with great line speed and aggressive shoulder contact, we went to half time in front 10-3. The second half started much the same, and after a perfect set piece backs move which sent William Shipperley over untouched, we were looking comfortable at 15-3. Brothers threatened to open up the game mounting attacking raids one after the next, which failed to pay off through either handling errors or the scrambling Sunnybank defence. The ease at which Brothers were starting to break the line was a double edged sword which saw us chance our hand within our own territory and gift Sunnybank a soft try through our own errors. At 15-8, with 1 minute remaining, Brothers attempted a penalty goal to put the game out of reach with no time to play. The penalty missed and stayed in field, Sunnybank then showed enormous patience to put together a huge number of phases and go 100meters to score in the corner well after time was up. They then converted from the sideline to draw the match and ultimately win the

premiership because they were placed higher on the ladder at the end of the regular season. Needless to say, it was a very bitter pill to swallow. While lots of lessons were no doubt learned, the loss shouldn’t take away from the huge effort put in by the team who, mid-season had an extremely tough road ahead to make top 4, let alone the grand final. Despite a disappointing end, 2014 was very encouraging for the club as a whole. A number of colts gained experience in premier grade and proved we have a lot to look forward to in coming years. It was very encouraging to see William Shipperley moving uninhibited in Premier Grade after an injury ravaged 2013. Sam Hyne, Pat James, Henry Fitzgerald and first year colt Angus Fowler all featured for Premier Grade at times throughout the year also. Congratulations must also go to the boys after 10 Brothers players were chosen to represent Brisbane North, in the QLD 20’s trial. Finally I would like to thank all the players, coaching staff, management and supporters for their efforts throughout the year. Division One - Colts I

Season 2014 like the one before, brought with it a lot of excitement and eagerness considering the wins we had last year. Unfortunately due to the nature of Colts 1, we had players stepping up and down for Premier Colts thus creating a rolling roster which eventually hurt us with combinations and consistency. Considering the wins and losses the Colts playing group had a year to remember on and off the field.

With an early season loss then a two week spell the boys were feeling fresh for our Friday night encounter with Souths. Considering the numerous late changes to the team the boys stood tall and played out of their skins to narrowly go down. Courage would be understatement; with Jeremy Stevens unknowingly breaking his jaw in the first half and to continue and play through to near on the final whistle was nothing short of the measure of the guy.

The boys gained confidence from a barn storming win against the ever struggling West Bulldogs, with the wind finally blowing in our direction our season felt like it was on the turn. Unfortunately injuries throughout the colts program hit our team and triggered another reshuffle. Our season was slowly slipping from our grasp but our ever conquering spirit was not.

The boys were very welcomely introduced to a club favourite and Brothers Club Old Boy Wayne Mackie. Wayne joined the coaching staff to assist the team in the absence of the ever delivering Graeme Silvester and Peter Haig. Graeme was seconded to the juniors program where this year he was very successful at both club and representative level. Peter along with his wife Isla had welcomed the birth of their first daughter Lillie. Having Wayne on board did bring a new fresh face and a style that the boys responded well to.

With some major focus on our team commitment and a rejuvenated defensive strategy saw the boys lift and give Wests another slap in the face. It was a hard few losses throughout the middle and back end of the season that had the boys down and feeling a bit out, the boys dug deep in the hopes of sending the big George Rafter out with a win in his last home game as a Colt. Unfortunately for the colts favourite George, this was not to be, the boys going down in hard fought tussle with GPS.

Having seen how hard the boys had trained and played this year, we thought it best to show our gratitude for a tough season by organising a few light refreshments in the bottom oval change rooms prior to cheering on both premier teams.

I would like to send congratulations to our entire Colts 1 Squad, including the guys who sat around every Saturday to either run water, run the line and reserve. We would not have had as much fun as we did without their commitment. For the colts coming back next year to the program – get excited and be prepared to work even harder and for those boys heading up to grades – Best of luck, you all will do exceptionally well. Thanks for another great year.

Division One - Colts 2 Our first game of the season included over 30 Colts II players looking for a run. At season’s end we had very similar playing numbers and an ever crowded reserves bench. Turn up to training and you had guaranteed game time. I would like to thank the players for their understanding and the manner in which they approached training and games. I accept that the constant changes made developing combinations difficult. In spite of this we were in semi-finals contention till late into the season. Unfortunately we finished just outside of the top four. Some of the long standing traditional Brisbane clubs have struggled to field Colts II teams in recent years. Brothers Colts II for season 2014 did not forfeit any games, had a full roster of players and reserves and had a contestable scrum for every minute of every game. Our scrum was our strength but was only ‘in play’ for about half of our games. Thank you to Matt Kaye for helping to make the dressing shed on the Vic Walsh Oval clean and usable for every match day. It became the unofficial clubhouse for Colts II and a few recovery drinks after every game, before the move to Colts Corner. To Wally Bennett for his time and commitment as our forwards coach, a further thank you. I think it is now 31 years since Wal first coached a Colts team at Brothers. Apparently the only difference is back then “we only drank heavies”. To our newest Life Member and very long term Colts mentor Dennis ‘Rugby’ O’Rourke, much praise for the thankless task of chasing up 17 and 18 year olds for ‘paperwork’ and subs. Further and most importantly to the young men who have played their last Colts games. I hope you have enjoyed this year and your memories of Brothers Rugby and the friends you have made serve you well into the future and that this is but a fraction of your future involvement with “the boys from Crosby park”.

32 players present themselves for preseason training and to see who would be selected to represent FNF. Beep tests urine tests, fat demobilisation tests, drug tests, were all used.

Such was the calibre of player all 32 survived, the task of gelling players together would be onerous, and combinations had to be sorted thru (boxer boys, tightey whiteys or free ballers.)

21 March the first game was upon us 27 to 7 a win the combination were working, boxer boys in the front row tightey whiteys in the back row and the free ballers airing their views in the backs. Had we found the holy grail of coach a test was needed.

Second game found us in front at half time after break a couple of free ballers were put in the back row and a boxer boy shifted to the backs, all hell broke loose red cards, yellow cards, pokers cards if it was a card it was used, result a loss. Game three had us back to the combinations that worked with a 22 to nil win over Meds

We lost some boxer boys and a couple of free ballers throughout the year

With our worst loss at the hands of Logan this game was played with 12 Brothers boys doing it for each other, club Logan had just finished their training session before the game and had 30 reserves to choose from. As a coach I feared and felt for my players, if they got injured they got up and just ripped in, players rising again and again no one wanted to let the other 11 down. We started with 12 and finished with 12 bruised blooded but never broken FNF boys.

Injuries, university and work commitments suspensions happened throughout the years which lead to us scrapping in to playoffs.

Could we hold off the fat lady we hadn’t beaten the teams above us all year could dreams come true, alas no she sung her tune and we where bundled out in straight sets.

Queensland Country Tour to New Zealand 2014

A 25 man Queensland Country Healers squad, selected from 9 of the 11 QCRU Sub-unions, headed to the south island of New Zealand for a two match tour in June of this year, only the fourth time that a Queensland Country team has undertaken such a tour.

The ARU have ruled on the criteria for a player to be known as a Wallaby or an Uncapped Wallaby:

a) Any player that is selected in a Wallabies squad and tours overseas with the national team is considered an Uncapped Wallaby, even if for any reason he is unable to play in a match,

b) Any player who was selected to assemble with a Wallabies squad and trained with the team in the lead-up to a Test during the period of the non-replacement rule in International Rugby is considered an Uncapped Wallaby; and/or

c) Any player in the replacement rule era who has been selected in a Wallabies Test squad, is part of the 22-man game day squad, but is not called on during the course of the match is considered an Uncapped Wallaby.
