I am glad that we are all gathered together here atthe World Organic Trade Fair, BioFach 2013. Thenomination of Romania by the organisers as the“Country of the year” at the most important organictrade fair in the world, is a great honour for us andat the same time an oligation to fulfill expectations. Romania is a beautiful country, blessed by naturewith clean and fertile soil, and an amazing biodiver-sity. Moreover, Romanians still keep alive theirancient traditions, while young professionals areeager to take steps forward in building a sustain-able agriculture, identifying themselves as modernEuropean farmers.In Romania, organic farming has always been athome as a way of life. And now the passion andthe expertise of these young professionals makepossible a transition to large-scale, certified organ-ic agriculture.At BioFach there are more than 50 exhibitorsassembled under the umbrella of the national pavil-

The large number of participantsindicates the active role of the “Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development” MADR andthe growing interest of farmers and consumers inhealthy, certified organic products. The nomination of Romania as “Country of theYear” is proof of the significant achievements ofour country in organic farming. We have signifi-cantly enlarged the area of land designated as cer-tified organic and recognized on an European level.We have increased our specialization. We havesecured an expanding and dynamic market, andwe export 80% of our organic products.On this firm foundation Romania has a huge poten-tial to develop organic agriculture in the future: wehave fertile and unpolluted lands, suitable for large-scale cultivation, we have vast areas, where we arestill using traditional farming methods without anychemical intervention. Our country is surroundedby virgin forests, where wild fruits, so healthy andappreciated by European consumers, grow natu-rally over large regions.From the very beginning agriculture has been thefoundation on which the pyramid of social develop-ment rests. Now in 2013, organic agriculture con-stitutes the foundation of the sustainable develop-ment of society, guaranteeing a better and healthi-er quality of life based on superior products. I am convinced that Romanian farmers specializedin organic farming will also benefit from BioFach2013 in another way. They are here among theirprofessional colleagues, European farmers withwhom they share the same principles and values.Collaboration between Romanian and otherEuropean farmers will help to consolidate a single

Obwohl die Rumänen ihre Traditionennoch leben, gibt es junge Branchenkenner, diesich als moderne europäische Landwirte verste-hen, die zielstrebig nach vorne blicken und ersteSchritte in Richtung einer modernenLandwirtschaft unternehmen.Die Biolandwirtschaft war in Rumänien immerbeheimatet, da diese dort eine Lebenseinstellungdarstellt. Unter der Schirmherrschaft des„Ministeriums für Landwirtschaft und Entwicklungdes Ländlichen Raums“ (MADR) präsentieren sichüber 50 Aussteller im rumänischen Landespavillon.Dies spiegelt das wachsende Interesse fürgesunde, zertifizierte Bio-Produkte von seiten derLandwirte sowie der Verbraucher.Die Wahl Rumäniens zum „Land des Jahres“ bei

dieser Fachmesse ist eine Bestätigung derErgebnisse die durch die Biolandwirtschaft in denletzten Jahren in Rumänien erzielt wurden. Eswurde eine bedeutende Vergrößerung derLandwirtschaftsflächen im zertifizierten Bioanbaunach europäischem Standard verzeichnet. Ebensoist positiv anzumerken, dass wir einen expandierenMarkt, sowie eine Exportquote von ca. 80% ineinem immer professionellerem Sektor verzeichnenkönnen.Rumänien hat ein riesiges Potential für die zukün-ftige Entwicklung in der Landwirtschaft: wir verfü-gen über saubere und ertragreiche Anbauflächen,geeignet für groß angelegte Kulturen, über weiteGebiete, wo die Landwirtschaft unter Verzicht aufchemische Mitteln mit traditionellen Methodenbetrieben wird. Wir besitzen große, unberührteWälder, wo die von den europäischenEndverbrauchern so hochgeschätzten, gesunden,wildwachsenden Waldfrüchte gedeihen.So wie die Landwirtschaft von Anbeginn an dasFundament der Pyramide zur gesellschaftlichenEntwicklung darstellte, sind wir der Auffassung,dass jetzt 2013, die Biolandwirtschaft dasFundament zur Weiterentwicklung unsererGesellschaft in eine gesündere und bessereZukunft auf der Basis guter und hochwertigerErnährung darstellt. AGF CEREAL RUMENA emerged on theRomanian market in 1997, as a representative ofthe Tampieri group, the company owing its foundation to the group’s need to answer to thegrowth of the Italian market in the food, energyand agro-alimentary sectors. The company produces and sells oleaginous andnon-oleaginous seeds and makes sure the Italianmother company is supplied with raw material.Sunflower, wheat, cole, maize, barley and peasare only a few of the bio goods the companyproduces and sells. The goods are produced incollaboration with bio farmers, or obtaineddirectly from the cultivation of the fields ownedby the company in the County of Brìla. Afterharvesting, the goods are kept in optimal storageconditions inside the company’s warehouse inLacu S`rat, Brìla County. Our philosophy is based on aiming for perfectionin all endeavours, all of our efforts being focusedon reaching this goal.

Agrimondo

AGRIMONDO was founded in Romania in 2007,based on the big demand on behalf of well-known firms which produced organic fodder andorganic alimentary products and which wantedto obtain their raw materials directly from thefields.Agrimondo guarantees rather short trade routesand is always in contact with the farmers. In2011 and 2012 various new cultivation projectshave been realized. Agrimondo deals with various interests concern-ing organic farming such as tests on seeds ofsoy beans. Agrimondo has developed an excogitated logisticsystem for the roads, railway and shipping mainlyfrom Romania. Agrimondo has on its disposal various controloffices in different places in Romania. The Roncon family has been involved in OrganicFarming since 1965 while Agricola Grains wasofficially born in 1991 when the EU Reg 2092/91aknowledged organic farming in Europe. APICOLA BAC~U is a Romanian company, located in Bacù County, founded in 1990 bythe Romanian Beekeepers Association.We are specialized in packed apiary product andfood supplements based on apiary products. In 2004 we started our own program for organicbeehive products. In 2005, in collaboration withthe German certification body Ecocert S.A, wesucceeded in having 50 beekeepers certified fororganic honey production. In 2006 the number ofcertified beekeepers increased to 100 and,presently, we are working with over 150 organichoney producers. In 2006 we took part in theBioFach fair, signing our first contract to deliverorganic honey in the EU.At this moment we are looking for buyers andtrade intermediary services (distributors, agents,chain stores, etc) for our packed products. Currently our products have ISO 9100 and ISO22000 certifications and are sold on theRomanian market and to various foreign coun-tries such as France, Germany, UAE."

BIOTERRA - the Romanian Organic Farmers’Association is the biggest association of biofarmers in Romania. It was established in 1997and gathers almost 3 000 members in the wholecountry. SOPHIA NYKA Association is the association oforganic farmers from Bra[ov and CovasnaCounties. Currently the association has a total of210 farmers, mostly certified organic producerswhile some are in the period of conversion. Ourorganic farming practice is specific to the moun-tain area of the Carpathiens. Production reliesmainly on dairy/meat cattle and dairy/meatsheep. The Association manages from 2010 theeco-certification process for an area of 3 400hectares of pastures and hayfield, 244 hectaresof arable land (fodder plants), 3 100 ovines and680 bovines. The Association is able to sell large quantities ofmeat cattle (Romanian Spotted or half-breeds)and meat sheep (}igaie), both live and carcass,with environmental compliance certificates.

The SZEKELYGYÜMÖLCS Association is a non-governmental organisation founded in 2010 anddedicated to establishing social enterprises in theCentral Region of Romania in order to increasethe economic revenues of the farmers and localrural communities. Presently the Association isrunning three social enterprises in the fields of(1) processing forest fruits and mushrooms, (2) production and processing of old fruit varieties,(3) processing of milk. The processing of fruit and mushrooms was ourfirst BIO certified economic activity. Our mainproducts are deep frozen wild fruit and mush-room products obtained from blueberries, rasp-berries, blackberries, cranberries, Boletus edulisand Cantharellus cibarius. The quantities offrozen fruits and mushrooms vary annuallybetween 40-100 tons according to our agreementswith our commercial partners. The packaging ofthe final delivered products is made according tothe partners’ requests.

PFA B~L~JEL EMIL TUDOR was founded in2009. Emil B`l`jel comes from a family of bee-keepers and also represents 90 beekeepers fromS`laj County in Transylvania, grouping them inone association named Apiecologic, with the aimof promoting and developing activity-specificenvironmental bee activity, providing inputs andoutputs for his collaborators without obtainingprofit. Presently, Apiecologic totalizes over 9 000beehives, 50% of which are certified organic andthe other 50% are currently being converted orpreparing to sign a contract with an inspectionand certification organization. In the future PFA B`l`jel Emil Tudor andApiecologic aim to promote organic bee productson the international market and to provide infor-mation on the latest developments in the bee-keeping and organic fields.

DOMENIILE FRANCO ROMÅNE was created in2000 by Denis Thomas, a Burgundy grower andproducer, with the support of a team ofRomanian professionals. The Vineyard (40 ha)and wine cellar are located in the old hill vineregion of “Dealu Mare”. ECO DANUBE is responsible for the organisationand monitoring of stock ponds 1 and 2 in theRazelm – Sinoe complex, and also for theNorthern area of Lake Razelm, which adjoins the uplift near the town of Colina, and the stockponds at Calica, which make up an importantpart of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The company is also a partner of the Natura2000 NGO, meeting all environmental require-ments. The stock ponds cover a 513 hectare surface,including a 435.5 production surface. By virtue of its technical structure, the complex containsmaturation ponds, natural reproduction ponds,wintering ponds and three summer vivariums.The technological flow involves multiple opera-tions during which the following categories ofpisciculture products are raised: pre-developedfries, summer old fries and fish intended for consummation. Eco Danube is now going through the secondyear of its conversion into a bio aquaculturecomplex. In April 2013, the company will be ableto sell BIO certified fish.

ECOHERBA was founded as result of the coop-eration among WWF-United Kingdom, WWFDCP (Austria), Albert-Ludwigs UniversitatFreiburg (Germany), University of AgriculturalSciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca(Romania), the Mayoralty Gårda de Sus andWeleda Company (Germany). These institutionshave developed a system of sustainable use ofArnica montana species for the benefit of biodi-versity conservation and local welfare. The entireactivity is performing in Gârda de Sus commune,Apuseni Mountains, Romania.The system developed here will be taken furtheron to other places by Ecoherba Ltd. The sustain-able exploitation system implies activities like:training for local people concerning the sustain-able harvest of Arnica flowers; monitoring theresource; ecologic certification for the resulteddry Arnica material.The dried and packed merchandise until nowwas entirely sent to Weleda firm in Germany.Ecoherba is financially supported in its activitiesby Weleda, Germany.

Between 2004 and 2007, Ecoinspect functionedon the strength of the RENAR accreditation.In 2007, the IOAS (International OrganicAccreditation Service, USA) accreditation proce-dure was started, and the accreditation certifi-cate was obtained in 2008. Finas Consulting

Set up in 2006, FINAS CONSULTING is a mem-ber of the Finas Group and of the Finas AgraraAgricultural Cooperative. In 2009, the companyleased 22 hectares of land in the village ofDragu, S`laj County. The same year, FinasConsulting signed a contract with ECOINSPECT,a company the grants ecological certification,and thus entered a transformation stage whichwas completed in 2012. Following the 2009 - 2012 capital investments,the company inaugurated a 6.4 ha ecologicalapple plantation, containing the varieties Remo,Relinda, Florina, Rebella and Rubinola, grafted onthe MM 106 stock. The seeds were bought fromHungary and Germany. Presently, the entire 22 ha surface leased byFinas Consulting is ecologically certified. It consistsin 9.5 ha occupied by the old orchard, 6.4 haoccupied by the new orchard and a 6.1 ha pas-ture. The ecological nature of this orchard makes thecompany investment an important one, especiallyconsidering that, in late 2007, there were no biovegetable and fruit producers in the County of S`laj.

OU~ DE }AR~, established in 2009, near Pite[ti,in the southern part of Romania, is dedicated tolaying hens breeding and organic eggs produc-tion. In 2009, we started an experiment with onlyone establishment of 3 000 hens and 4 yearsafter our capacity is of 30 000 hens divided in 3different exploitations, making us the biggestorganic eggs producer in Romania.In it's activity the company combines the advan-tages of a modern era - technology, information -with those of a traditional way of living - freerange hens, access to the pastures, natural feedproduced in our own premises.The organic eggs we produce are the result of acarefully supervised chain of production fromhens nest to the market shelf: from the layinghens environmental conditions, in accordancewith European regulations, to their feed which isproduced in the company's small mill with organiccereals and cakes produced in Romania and EUcountries, continuing with sorting and packingoperations and finishing with the transport to thefinal clients.
