    Solar Umbrella

Inspired by Paul Rudolphs Umbrella House of 1953, theSolar Umbrella provides a contemporary reinvention of thesolar canopy a strategy that provides thermal protectionin climates with intense exposures. Passive and active solardesign strategies render the residence 100% energy neutral.Recycled, renewable, and high performance materials andproducts are speci ed throughout. Hardscape and landscapetreatments are considered for their aesthetic and actualimpact on the land. The Brooks-Scarpa Residence elegantlycrafts each of these strategies and materials, exploiting thepotential for performance and sensibility while achieving arich and interesting sensory and aesthetic experience.

Rather than de ecting sunlight, this state of the art solar skinabsorbs and tranforms this rich resource into usable energy, providing the residence with nearly 100% of its electricity. Util-ity costs are less that $500/year. Like many design featuresat the Solar Umbrella, the solar canopy is multivalent and richwith meaning performing several roles for both functional, formal and experiential effect.
