Research has ind i -ca ted tha t males and females react d i f fe ren t ly to hum or . Males o f t en show anindependence be tween the i r over t, pub l ic expression o f hum or apprec ia t ion(mirth) and thei r pr ivate , evaluat ive response to humor s t imul i ( funninessrat ings) , whereas for females there exis ts a greater in terdependence betweenthese behav iora l measures (Cupch ik & Leven tha l , 1974 ; Leven tha l & Mace ,1970). Fur ther , males have been fou nd to apprec ia te sexual (Groch , 1974 ;Malpass & Fi tzp atr ick , 1959 ; Te rry & Ertel , 1974) and aggressive hu m or (Groch ,1974; Lan dis & R oss , 1933) m ore than females , whi le the reverse pat ter n hasbeen no ted fo r absurd hu m or (G roch , 1974 ; Land is & Ross , 1933 ; Ter ry & Er te l ,1974).
