World War I and Childswickham

As the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of that War draws near, I m wondering – in prep-aration for Remembrance Sunday, in November – if there are any memories or records of those whose names are inscribed on the War Memorial in Church. They are as follows: - Harry White Bertram Carter Alfred Carter Frank Hodgkins Reginald Gilder Harry G. Lambley Cecil Smith Walter Jones Albert Newbury James W. Hemming Hubert R. Newbury Henry Sandell Sidney Staite Arthur Agg If you do know anything about any of them, I would be pleased to hear from you – John Thompstone – 01386 852930 email: [email protected]

HARVEST FESTIVAL. CHILDSWICKHAM.

John Thompstone, ‘interim’ Vicar writes about Signs of Hope

Fresh Expressions of church are increasing and, with them, a considerable number of new Christians (or lapsed Christians returning) are forming the basis of new churches and Christian Communities. Fresh expressions of church include ‘messy church’ which are child oriented occasions of play and worship: or cafe church – meeting informally and interactively: or meeting in peoples’ homes with all the ‘laid back’ and friendly atmosphere that that promotes towards becoming a place of friendship, learning and wor-ship. It is reckoned that there are about 2000 such communities within the life of the Church of England. In 2012, the number of people joining the Church exceeded the number leaving by 38,000. A derelict farm Latimer Church (just outside the M25 between London & Oxford) began in a rented house before ac-quiring a derelict farm and converting the buildings into a centre where Christian worship, teaching and fellowship could happen. In its two year history, it has grown to some 200 people attending on Sundays and throughout the week. New churches planted Holy Trinity, Brompton established the Alpha Course which has touched the lives of thousands in our own country and beyond. They have also planted many new churches in places where the traditional parish church had run out of steam and was, perhaps, on the point of closure. From Balham to Battersea, Fulham to Hampton Wick, you will find these lively churches and their fresh expression of what it is to be ‘church’ in 2014. Growth in the inner city In Leicester, Pastor Sunny George led his Christian fellowship into a redundant C. of E. building and formed the Church of All Saints. Its large congregation, drawn chiefly from the local Indian and Pakistani community and speaking many languages, worships together, colourfully, and with a mix of musical styles: its congregation explores faith across the generations from the very young to the more senior – a place of love, faith and fellowship in that multicultural city. So, what of Childswickham and you When, in January, we held ‘Mary’s Place’ in the Village Hall and served ‘Full English Breakfast’ before a short act of worship ( and 50 people joined in) – that was an attempt to express church in new kind of way. I would love to explore and develop those ideas – but, alas, we lack the resources and the manpow-er unless a new and younger generation feels able to think creatively about the church in our village, steps forward, and says ‘Here I am!’ However, even though my time is limited, I travel hopefully! Who can tell what the future of St Mary’s is? But if these fresh expressions and the growth they engender can happen elsewhere then, maybe, some-thing similar could happen here. If you are reading this; if it touches you – my name is John and I’d love to meet up with you. 1, The Times 19/04/2014

Childswickham Evergreens The will be an Open evening in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday 23rd July at 2.00pm , when Mrs Merleen Watson will be speakinh on Hearing Dogs for Deaf people. She will also bring her dog Grace. Charge £1 pp including Tea & biscuits. Please support this very good charity that does excellent work. Further information from Peggy Maudsley 852316 The Return of the Bicuits, The biscuit tin which was taken from the Evergreen Cupboard has been returned with most of the biscuits in the tin eaten by the person and persons to whom they were offered. An apology would have been accepted or a replacement of the biscuits. To think we have someone in our midst that would do such a thing doesn't bear thinking about. I wonder if your conscience lets you sleep at night!

Childswickham WI

Since last meeting there has been a cinema outing to Le Weekend and an excellent walk around Worcester with Paul Harding, plus a lovely cream tea at Dumbleton Hall. We also welcomed a new member. Our speaker this month was Mrs Sue Watson who gave a very entertaining talk about her life as a BBC Producer. Sue began by telling us about her teenage dreams of becoming an actress and ending up in Hollywood. She actually landed her first job in a Manchester Theatre as an usherette! She went on to recount many amusing anecdotes about how she became a journalist and eventu-ally a producer at the BBC~ She began as a researcher on Good Morning with Anne and Nick and has worked with many famous names, one of her favourites being Terry Wogan on Points of View~ Sue gave up working for BBC to spend more time with her family and has since written three novels, two of which were for sale at the end of the evening. Sue never did become an actress but she used her great stage presence to provide us with a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Next meeting on July 2nd is Mr Mark Wilkins talking about the Air Ambulance Trust. For details contact

Marilyn on 854661, or Mary on 859661.

Childswickham Parish Council News Defibrillator Update

After positive suggestions from several Childswickham residents on how to improve the use and availability of

our Defibrillator, the Parish Council are working on a number of initiatives.

We are investigating the purchase of improved signage, sited at the entrances to the village and opposite the

Memorial Hall, to make sure everyone can find the Defibrillator when needed in an emergency.

We have provided contact details for the trained first response trained villagers, both inside and outside the

Memorial hall. We also plan to post location details and pictures, instructions for use in an emergency and

names and contact numbers of first response trained villagers, on the Childswickham Parish Council website.

In this way we can reach out to as many of our residents as possible.

Please watch this space for details of when this information is available and the website address.”

Moon Walk 2014 On the evening of May 10th, 4 friends and I caught the train into London and took part in the Moon walk 2014. We walked 26.2 miles around London, in our decorated bras, starting off at 12.40am, taking in many of the fantastic sights in and around London. This all in aid of raising money and awareness of breast cancer. We all enjoyed the experience, along with 18,000 other people, all walking the walk. After a slow start, and battling strong winds we achieved this challenge, all feeling overwhelmed and emotional at completing the 26.2 miles. I wish to thank everyone who so kindly sponsored me, and gave me words of encouragement and support, enabling me to take on, and complete this challenge. With the generosity of villagers, friends, work colleagues and family, I have raised £1203.80, which is a fantastic sum of money to pass onto the breast cancer research charity. Thank you all so much, and a big thank you to Mrs Cumper for helping me collect sponsors.
