Go Green . . .How to Get a “Green”LawnWe all like a nice green lawn. What about a“green” lawn? The fertilizer or weed killeyou use can impact our water qualityConsider these tips, from the Natural Resource

Conservancy Commission, to a “green” lawn.• Don’t bag grass. Clippings left on thelawn

add nitrogen and reduce fertilizer use.

• Keep it long. Long grasses shade weedsMow no closer than 3 inches to reduce pes-ticide use.

• Use natural herbicides. Boiling watersoap solutions and vinegar can kill many weeds on contact.

• Water well. Lawns need about one inchof water to be well irrigated. Make a wate

gauge – a cup or container with a ruler –and use a timer to figure out how long thesprinkler has to run to get to one inch.Water no more than once per week.

• Water wisely. It is not necessary to waterinhot, dryweatherwhengrassgoes dormantdormant grass will recover in the fall.

• Consider a rain barrel. Collect waterfrom roof and eave downspouts and use to water your lawn. Be sure to use a deep col-lection barrel, however, to avoid creating ahabitat for mosquitoes.
