Biddestone and Slaughterford Parish Council Notes from the meeting of 29th May, 2012 Eight Parish Councillors were present at the meeting. Cllr Stafford confirmed the arrangements for the Diamond Ju-bilee celebrations centred around a tea party with childrens’ activities would be held on The Green on 5th June, as discussed at the April meeting. It was agreed that this was a parish Council event. The appearance of the TV dish at Quoin Cottage has been modified as is regarded as acceptable. Cllr Mullens will represent the Council on the transport committee (CATG). It was noted that meetings of the committee are now open to the public. Judging for the Best Kept Village competition will be during the early summer. Definition of the access to the burial ground at the Ebenezer Chapel in Cuttle Lane has been requested and the owner of the converted chapel has been contacted. The dog fouling order requested for the playing fields has not bee issued and the clerk was asked to chase WC as a matter of urgency. Concern was expressed about the water on the Corsham Road between the Manor and Brook House. This has been reported to Highways over several years but no curative measures have been taken, although the danger of a skid pan forming in cold weather has been raised repeatedly (signs warning of ice were supplied last winter). It is hoped that a solute\ionwill be found before next winter. Two planning application have been received: rebuilding of the utility room and other internal changes at the Coach House, Harts Lane; and division of one dwelling ito two separate entities at the old Rectory. There were no objec-tions to either proposal. Four applications were accepted by WC: tree works at The Coach House, Harts Lane and Mountjoy Farm; resiting of the road access at 3 Slaughterford Road; and minor internal works and repainting of the conservatory at Elm Cottage, The Green, Biddestone. Biddestone’s Open Gardens On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July from 2.00 to 6.00pm about 17 gardens will be open. These range from typical Cots-wold cottage gardens to Landscaped gardens which include a Japanese garden, water features, etc. Various stalls will sell handmade pottery, silk umbrellas, jams and preserves and re-freshments, and Malcolm Cleverley, first prize winner for hon-ey at Frome’s Cheese Show, will give guidance on keeping bees.. Tickets and maps will be available at the car park (by the vil-lage hall) and from a stall on the village green. Admission £5 for adults, children under 16 free. Proceeds will be divided between charities chosen by the gardeners. Further information from Di Webb on (01249) 715963.

Jubilee Tea Party on The Green It was definitely a matter of 'Keep Calm and Carry on' as the wind blew and the rain lashed down on Biddestone on June 5th. Much planning preceded the Biddestone Jubilee Tea Party and the organiza-tion had taken many people many hours but, alas, the weather was the one element that not even Her

Majesty could pre-order! However, the Dunkirk Spirit really did shine through on the day and the party went ahead. The tents and bunting went up on The Green, followed by the table and chairs, crockery and patriotic napkins and all due to a really great team of willing and enthusiastic helpers. Caroline Penny's vintage marquees saved the day and kept us all as dry as possible.

As villagers started to arrive the food tent quickly filled up with plates of delicious sandwiches, Jubilee cup cakes, scones, sausage rolls, jam tarts and other delights. No one was going to leave this tea party hungry! Pretty Jubilee jam jars of red,

white and blue flowers arrived to be judged before decorating the laden tables. Janet Hartley kindly carried out the judging and announced Rosemary Warchus the winner with Mary Owen, Jane Iggulden, Anita Powell and Kitty Cutbill and Flora Madley (joint entry) as runners up.

Approximately 200 people sat and enjoyed tea and goodies and it was perhaps all the more memorable be-cause of the rain. Lots of happy children took part in the games and races on the front lawn of The Close and many were seen proudly sporting Olympic-style med-als. Well done and many thanks to Anita and Mary for organizing the games and many happy smiley fac-es. Big thanks must go to Gill Stafford to heading up the Jubilee Team and co-ordinating all the meetings at The Close, the Penny's for the use of their tents and team to put them all into position so quickly, and to every single person who helped in any way on the day from bunting and flags, tables and chairs, manning the tea stations, all the clearing up and, of course, for contributing such a delicious Royal feast! It was a truly memorable day. Carolyn Madley

Police and Crime Commissioner Information Site An information site about the election of the first ever Police and Crime Commissioner for Wilt-shire has been launched. The area on the Wiltshire Police Authority's website - http://www.wiltshire-pa.gov.uk/pcc - includes details about the role and responsibilities of the forthcoming Police and Crime Commissioner and how they will be scrutinised. Much like the existing police authority, the Police and Crime Commissioner will be responsible for overseeing Wiltshire Police on behalf of all residents in the Force area. They will represent people living across Wiltshire and Swindon. Elections for Police and Crime Commissioners take place on Thursday 15 November 2012. There will then be a formal seven day transition period before the commissioner takes office on Thurs-day 22 November. The Wiltshire Police area Police and Crime Commissioner will replace Wiltshire Police Authori-ty, the group of 17 councillors and independent members who currently oversee Wiltshire Police. Firstly, thank you to Christine Taylor for hosting June’s meeting. There were mixed reactions to the book, which we felt was at its best when touching on autobiographical details about life in Ceylon. In July we shall be reading ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ by Mark Haddon. The meeting will take place at 7.15p.m. on Monday July 16th at Church Farm, Hartham thanks to Kate Jones.

‘The Hare with the Amber Eyes’ keeps proving elusive so that the books will not be available from the library for September’s meet-ing. We have no meeting in August but September’s book and venue will be announced in the August Biddestone Broadsheet.

Record of Biddestone & Hartham W.I. Meeting on 20th June 2012 President, Jo Hancock, welcomed 13 members and seven guests to the meeting, and then introduced Theodora, the well-known local florist. Instead of a floral demonstration she had decided to have a ‘hands on’ afternoon when everyone would learn how to create a corsage with the leaves and small flowers and buds she provided. There was much hilarity struggling with wires and green tape, but in the end everyone had a small attractive arrangement to take home. . Valerie Spencer-Jones provided delicious refreshments before business matters were attended to. The Record of the previous meeting was read and approved. Matters arising 600 pennants had been made for the WI Jubilee Party at Rowdeford School. Jo had spoken again to the owner of Sharcott Manor re our August visit. The entry fee is £4 and there will be a guided walk round the gardens of one hour. It was agreed that Jo would order a ploughman’s lunch for everyone at the café there. Following the visit by a local midwife to the Resolutions meeting in May, Jo and Betty Evans will visit the Birthing Centre at Chippenham on its Open Day on September 22nd and members will make cakes for the occasion. Margaret Beswick will go back to Stewart Entwistle to discuss the Welcome letter and information for new-comers to the village and work out what to include. Correspondence A sample of the 2013 calendar and order forms had been received. There will be a New Members day at Wroughton on 6th September Di Webb had asked the WI if they would provide flower arrangements for the church over the Open Gar-dens weekend July 7th and 8th and this was discussed and agreed. Extra chairs would be needed for the Garden Party in July. Members should take enough food for two.. The invitations had been sent out and replies should be received by the next Committee meeting.
