HEADTEACHER WELCOME

‘The reason a lot of people do not recognise opportunity is because it usually goes round wearing overalls looking like hard work’

- Thomas Edison

Our wonderful Year 11s are over halfway through their GCSEs as you read this and we are very proud of how hard they have been working and how they are stepping up to the challenge of these exams. This time of year is incredibly pressurised for our young people, for their families and for teachers too as we are all unified in wanting the very best. It would be fair to say that it really is a team effort throughout the GCSE season as every member of staff has been involved in supporting the students in various ways from ensuring fruit and water are available at the start of exams to picking up anxious youngsters and being a friendly ear to providing post exam debriefs. Even the students from across other years have been part of the effort by being respectful and conscientious in ensuring Year 11s have the best experience possible. We are really looking forward to celebrating at the prom later this term – always a fabulous occasion in the Academy! The beginning of July will see our new Year 7s join us for a four day transition event which is an exciting new venture for us. It is a project agreed between many of the primary schools and both of the secondary schools in South Weston to try and ensure a positive and supportive move from primary to secondary as well as a great start to relationships between new families and the Academy. Being community focused is one of our values and we are relishing the opportunity to strengthen the links this new event will provide. Of course our pledge to this four day transition has meant we have also changed how we offer the traditional enrichment activities which will now happen over different days in the summer term. Students in Years 7-9 will receive information very shortly, and our Year 10s will be going out on Work Experience so there will be lots of new experiences coming up for all students. Earlier this term I promised you an update on our wish to join the Cabot Learning Federation and I am thrilled to say that the Regional Schools Commissioner South West Headteacher Board has agreed the transfer of Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College to the Cabot Learning Federation. Significant work is now underway to make this happen and I hope you will be as pleased as we are that Broadoak Academy will come into being in the new academic year. Students are already involved in designing a new logo to mark the start of a new phase for the school. Thank you to those of you who have been involved and have taken the time to share your thoughts and ideas. Ms K McGillycuddy Headteacher

YEAR GROUP UPDATES Year 7 During Year 7 charity week lots of fundraising took place. There were a variety of events including cake sales, lucky dips and a sponsored ‘blind’ walk.

One of the chosen lower school charities this year is Guide Dogs for the Blind so the students took part in a blindfolded walk in which they were led around a course by their partner. The other chosen cause is the dementia unit at Weston Hospital.

With Year 7 and Year 8 efforts combined, lower school students have raised a fantastic £770.00 which will be split evenly between the two charities.

Thank you and well done to all!

Year 8 Approximately 60 year 8 students attended the Buddy Programme run by IntoUniversity staff. The group attended a workshop in which they learnt about university life and took part in activities related to engineering degrees. This was then be followed by a full day's visit to the University of Bath. Students completed a tour of the campus to investigate studying at university. In the afternoon they took part in a themed workshop. The Buddy Programme was an excellent opportunity for students to find out about studying at a higher level and career paths afterwards. Meeting university students was hopefully inspiring and the scheme gave the young people the chance to think about how they can achieve their goals. Mr Knight & Mrs Hambley Head of Lower School and Assistant Head of Lower School

YEAR GROUP UPDATES

Year 9 Terms 4 and 5 have flown by for Year 9 as we have been busy with the options process. Thanks to the support of parents, tutors, subject teachers and Mrs Grimshaw, the process went smoothly with everyone successfully submitting their preferences. It was the first year for students to have the opportunity to visit key stage 4 lessons and have a ‘taster’ of what next year has in store. Students visited computer science, iMedia and photography on a fact finding mission. The Plastic (not fantastic) committee have worked hard this term. All classrooms now have a recycling box for plastic bottles. On the last Friday before Easter they organised a highly successful Easter tombola, raising over £60. We are raising money to provide all year 9 students with a plastic free pen! During Year 9 charity week, staff and students are raising money for Greenpeace UK through cake sales, a raffle and sports competitions. Our Education Welfare Officer, Mr Ali, has been challenging staff and students to a table tennis tournament for a donation to the cause. On 5th June students are taking part in a Sponsored Walk for World Environment Day. Students can pay 50p to wear a green or blue top and the sponsored walk will see students walking from Broadoak to Weston Pier and back again in aid of Greenpeace UK. In PSHCE we have looked at aspects of healthy living and healthy relationships. In response to a recent report on the changing face of high streets, students designed and presented the ideal high street of the future. Celebration assembly was a pleasure as usual. 24 students received gold certificates for achievement. 14 students were congratulated for participating in the Carnegie reading challenge. Mia was congratulated for winning book tokens for her entry in the 2019 poetry competition run by the LRC. Mrs Downes Head of Year 9

YEAR GROUP UPDATES Year 10 A busy few terms have been spent in the classroom for Year 10. They have been responding positively to their PPE's, ensuring that they are closing their knowledge gaps across all subjects and a number of year 10 students are now beginning their final GCSE exams in specific subjects. Staff have been quick to recognise the hard work that is going on in lessons which was highlighted by 4 pages of positive feedback received during the planning for the year 10 celebration assembly. Praise should also go to the Year 10 students who were involved in the recent 'Broadoak's Got Talent' production. Year 10 are now looking forward to their Work Experience in July and their taster day at Bridgwater College this term.  Mr Perham Head of Year 10 Year 11 Term 5 has seen many important elements for Year 11, the students have been finalising fundraising for the 2019 Year 11 leavers prom; completing coursework and controlled assessment; undertaking revision and beginning their final exams. So much work has gone into these final preparations, and it is now that the heart and soul of the students is really coming to the fore as the students build on their skills of resilience, determination, time management and effort, turning them into their final push before they leave us this summer. They have collected their leavers hoodies and are looking forward to the leavers assembly on June 14th, Prom on 27th June and then finally, GCSE results on August 22nd. Keep going Team Awesome, you are nearly there! Mrs Harvey Head of Year 11

BECOMING A MOBILE PHONE FREE SCHOOL

A real focus for us as a school has been to ensure the very best climate for learning so that students are fully prepared for lessons and any distraction is eliminated. To support this we have made the decision to become a mobile free school because of the negative effect on student learning and the part that they sometimes play in antisocial behaviour. This decision has not been taken lightly as we have done significant research into the topic to look at what the issues are. Our rationale: There are a number of reasons why we have made the decision to become a mobile phone free school. Some of these are outlined below:

• Research has shown that in mobile free schools academic outcomes are increased. The London School of Economics found that it had the effect of giving pupils an extra week’s education over the course of an academic year. The researchers who looked at schools in four English cities found test scores increased by more than 6% in those which were mobile free.

• At Broadoak we recognise that mobile phones, cameras and digital devices are now an integral part of our culture and can be of considerable value, particularly in relation to personal safety. However, balanced with this is the need to safeguard young people and staff from the inappropriate use of the Internet and telecommunications, and the misuse of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.

• Mobile phones, in particular the most up to date smart phones, are very expensive. This causes pressures on parents to buy the most up to date devices for young people. This can also cause much upset if they are lost, broken or stolen.

Young people’s digital health is becoming increasingly important and by ensuring that their time at school is mobile free we hope this will support parents at home as you will know that for at least 7 hours each school day your child has not been on their phone.

Students will be informed though a tutor time activity on Wednesday 5th June. Students, parents and staff will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding this policy change and the rationale behind it over the next few weeks. The changes will come in from Monday 17th June. We appreciate that you may have specific questions regarding this change if so you are very welcome to come into the college for an informal Q&A session with Mr Tipler on Monday 10th June between 4:30pm and 6pm, or alternatively send us an email to [email protected] and we will endeavour to respond to you as soon as possible.

BROADOAK’S GOT TALENT Broadoak’s Got Talent was held on 27th March and was a fantastic evening jam packed with a great programme of different performing acts. The event was led by students, for the students and was comedically hosted by two year 10 students. During the evening we saw an eclectic mix of extremely talented performances from vocal solos to self-accompanied duets, rapping to classical piano and modern dance to a full gymnastics floor display. After a guest performance from Rhys, a 1st year music degree student from Weston College, the judging panel unanimously announced that the evening of spectacular performances were topped by runners up Marcel (piano) and Archie (gymnastics) and the winner Hazel with a highly polished and emotive vocal performance of “I Dreamed a Dream”.

Mrs Aves (Head of Performing Arts) says “It doesn’t matter how well you know your

students, this type of event always creates the platform for the most

wonderful of creative surprises and this year was no exception.

Well done to everyone who took part!”

BROADOAK SPORTS UPDATE

TERM 4 and 5 Lower School Boys Football This term has seen the commencement of the football season for Years 7 and 8. Both year groups have shown a good commitment to training with numbers remaining consistently high each week. The Year 7 squad in particular has gone from strength to strength on a weekly basis with more and more boys coming forward and wanting to play. Training sessions have been competitive and played with good quality. The Year 8 squad have formed a strong bond and been really supportive of each other during both training sessions and matches.  Year 7 and 8 V Priory (H) Year 7 played their first competitive fixture against a very strong Priory team. They spent a large part of the first half camped in their own half having to defend for their lives. The second half saw a similar pattern but to the boys credit they never backed down from the challenge and continued working hard to the final whistle. Unfortunately the Priory teams size, strength and quality shone through and they ran out convincing winners 8-0. Year 8 also faced a strong Priory team, however they matched the Priory teams performance in the first half creating several of their own chances to score. Only a very unlucky goal separated the two teams at half time. Unfortunately the second half saw some quick fire Priory goals and they ran out 5-0 winners. I feel that the scoreline was a harsh one and didn't reflect the amount of possession and chances created that Broadoak had. All in all, despite the result, a very encouraging display. Year 7 and 8 V Hans Price (H) Year 7 played Hans Price in what turned out to be a game of two halves! The first half saw a couple of soft goals given to Hans Price. The team spent large parts of the first half defending around their own eighteen yard box, with Toba producing 3 fine saves to keep the scoreline at 2-0. The second half saw a more even affair with Broadoak getting on the ball more often and looking more threatening, especially through the pace of Leon. The boys forced Hans Price into more defensive work than in the first half and but for several fine saves from the HPA keeper we would have run out with at least a draw, possible even a win. As it stood the game was decided on chances taken and Hans Price ran out 3-0 winners. The Year 8 team faced a match with similar features to the Year 7 game. Some good attacking play saw a couple of goals for the boys but Hans Price were able to hit back quickly each time to maintain their lead. Broadoak were not then able to convert more of the chances that they created and Hans Price ran out 4-2 winners. In terms of performance it was another encouraging display and they can consider themselves unlucky not to come away with a result.

BRONZE FOR ARCHIE Congratulations to Archie in Year 8 for a fantastic achievement at the National Acrogymnastics Championships. Archie and his partner and Maddie brought home a Bronze medal each to be third best in Britain! As the youngest competing, the pair coped brilliantly with a challenging first round performance with changes to their routine 2 days before the event and then having to repeat the routine following a mess up with their music, however , they still went on to get the top score in the second round. We look forward to following Archie’s gymnastics journey which could potentially involve competing at the world championships with the GB Team in the next few years!

Well done Archie and keep up the hard work!

WELCOME TO YEAR 6 STUDENTS FOR TRANSITION WEEK

We will be welcoming Year 6 students to Broadoak for four days from July 1st to Thursday July 4th for Transition Week. We have been working with our feeder primary schools and Hans Price to provide the students with the best possible ‘taster’ experience of secondary school life. This fantastic opportunity will help our new students to feel welcome and part of our community and help them to manage this ‘big change’ positively. Parents will be invited to join us on Thursday 4th July at 2pm for a performance, showcasing the student’s week. All students will have a role in the performance. You are welcome to stay for tea and coffee afterwards and meet the tutors and the senior leadership team. Following this, there will be a Welcome Evening on Thursday 4th, where parents can again meet the Headteacher, tutors and other staff. You will also have the opportunity to order uniforms, to book music lessons and to collect any relevant information you might need. Year 7-9 students will be in normal lessons during Year 6 Transition and Year 10 students will be on work experience that week.

Students at last year’s transition day with Mr Knight,

Head of Lower School.

THE 100 CLUB

Lower School students are being encouraged to help build a better Broadoak Community and improve their citizenship by joining ‘The 100 Club’. Students have been given a card which they can complete for ‘good deeds’ such as volunteering to help someone, standing up for something they think is right, picking up litter even if it isn’t theirs and working efficiently as part of a group. Once students have completed each of the 10 activities, 10 times they will have 100 points and will be congratulated for joining The 100 Club!

YEAR 7 AND 8 STUDENTS VISIT WESTON HOSPITAL Following very successfully charity fundraising, 4 lower school students visited Weston General Hospital to deliver a cheque for £385. Tyler, Brandon, Hazel and Tia worked hard to raise the most money during Year 7 and 8 charity weeks with a school disco, cake sale, sponsored blind walks and much more. The funds are supporting ‘Bobs Café’, a calm and relaxing space provided with the intent of making hospital stays for those with dementia a bit less stressful. Well done to all students who helped to support this local cause.

If any lower school students would like to take part, please see Mr Knight for a card to complete.

YEAR 9 WIN PROGRAMME SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES

The Wessex Inspiration Network (WIN) visited Broadoak to help Year 9 students examine their social media profile and digital footprint. Students explored the different social media platforms and reflected on the benefits and risks associated with using social media. Students had the opportunity to reflect how their social media profiles can be used to enhance their career prospects and completed audits on their own social media content to ensure they portray a positive presence in the digital world.

YEAR 10 HOSPITALITY TASTER DAY

Year 10 Hospitality and Catering students attended Weston College industry taster day as part of their Level1/2 award. They were a fantastic example of Broadoak students at their best. They were engaging and keen to get involved. Students competed in the omelet challenge Reece had an ‘eggcelent’ time of 16 seconds! Stars of the show were Rhys and Daisy who came second in the eclair competitions. Daisy reported what she had learnt on the visit: “When I went to the Hospitality Taster Day at Weston College, we were allowed to taste some of the gourmet taster snacks they had cooked. We then had a look around some stands of farm based businesses, for example Thatchers. We had a look at vacuum packaging and sealing fruit to extend the life and flavour. Rhys and I entered an éclair making competition with other schools and were awarded 2nd place. Our prize was Weston College hoodies! It was a good experience to be able to have a look into the different thing that they offer at the college for Hospitality and Catering.”

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

Over thirty Year 10 and Year 11 students completed their bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) expedition which was the final step towards achieving their DofE Bronze Award. DofE awards are made up of 4 sections and participants have to complete a skill, physical and volunteering section for 3 – 6 months and then take part in an assessed expedition. Broadoak students have completed a variety of activities through their DofE experience including learning new skills in cooking, martial arts, music and craft, trying out new physical activities such as rugby, cycling, running and badminton, and volunteering in their local communities at Guide and Scout groups, children’s sports clubs or even helping neighbours and litter picking. Five groups went out on the expedition and their mission was to complete twelve hours of hiking in the Mendips, camp overnight and cook for themselves using Trangia cookers. The students showed an impressive range of skills such as map reading, outdoor survival skills, route planning, and teamwork. They also showed formidable endurance and resilience. The camp in Sandford really tested the limits of the students when they were unfortunate enough to be caught in a four hour long downpour during the evening. For all students, this made cooking and camping extremely challenging, and for one group in particular it made the erecting of their tent very difficult indeed. By the morning of the second day, the students were raring to go and, six hours later, all groups had completed their expedition, exhausted but elated. Mr Whitehead who led the expedition said “The resolve and spirit of the students never flagged and each and every one of them should be proud of their achievement” Year 11 students will have their awards presented at their Celebration Leavers Assembly on Friday 14th June and Year 10 students will be invited to have their awards presented at the Broadoak Awards evening on Tuesday 9th July.

LRC NEWS 12 Words for 2019 - Writing competition Winners!  Congratulations to Mia from (9W) for winning the 12 Words Writing Competition, with a prize of £15 worth of book tokens for the Scholastic Book Fair. Well done to runners up Filip and Evie who both won £5 book tokens. Each enjoyed exchanging their vouchers for some great books at the fair. Mia’s winning entry is a positive message we can all learn from:

“The past, learn from it. Don’t dwell on it, happiness forever more.” Book Fair brings new books for Broadoak! The Scholastic Book Fair took place earlier this year with hundreds of great books for students to buy, many at discounted prices too. All Year 7 and 8 students were given the opportunity to visit the book fair during an English lesson and it was also made available to parents during the Year 10 parents evening. Thank you to everyone who supported the book fair, we had a fantastic response again this year and raised nearly £180 worth of books for the college library.   These brilliant new books can be found in the LRC… please come down and take a look!

Form tutors let their groups know how many points that they have picked up and where that leaves them in comparison to other tutor groups in the year. The overall score is given as a percentage to ensure that it is fair for each tutor group, regardless of numbers.

If you are looking for an easy win in the pursuit of excellent grades then

look no further, attending school regularly is the way to achieve this.

If you have any questions/queries/would like support in regards to attendance then please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Tutor or

Year Leader.
