BSGA Chair’s Report AGM 2012I start by paying tribute to all volunteers that have served our organisation both locally andnationally during the 20011-12 season. Your enthusiasm, commitment and dedication havebeen inspirational. The take up by young people of our competitions in gymnastics wouldsimply be impossible without your year round efforts. A significant part of the burdenalways falls on our competition organisers and to each of you I say a special thank you.The 2012 AGM provides another milestone in the journey of the association whichaccording to “The History of British Gymnastics” (Jim Prestidge), started as the EnglishSchools Gymnastics Association in 1966. This AGM will mark the end of our longassociation with Carita House our main sponsor. My earliest gymnastics handbook ~(1976/7) contains a Carita advertisement for ‘Skin-fit’ leotards. BSGA wishes to place onrecord its appreciation of the generous support it has received and the friendshipsdeveloped with Carita House over many years. We offer our best wishes for the future tothe Carstensen family. It is also appropriate to thank Val Oswald as she steps down after 14 years from the role ofchairing the Scottish Schools Panel. Scotland has seen huge growth in participation inschool competitions and much of this is down to Val’s leadership, inspiration andmotivation.I believe that BSGA is a stronger organisation now than it was at the time of our AGM ayear ago. You might think this a surprising judgement given that both our membership andfinances have decreased in the last year. If the work of the steering group with BGachieved nothing else in 2011-12, it made us ‘take stock’ of the many issues facing us as avolunteer body. In a similar way to attending a religious convention, it has re-awakenedthe belief that BSGA has a specific role in promoting gymnastics in schools and thatthrough our own effort and determination we are capable of greater successes. We will continue to work with British Gymnastics to streamline provision for school children. At the same time we will retain our own budget and the respected name of BSGA.

Going forward from the 2012 AGM we will provide an action plan based on a clear visionof what is required to build a more robust competition pathway through the ten regions andhome countries. In this process each region must ensure it has a structure in place tomanage public funds and oversee efficient and effective local competition organisation.

Our plans for 2012/13 include three major new initiatives;

The launch of a dedicated BSGA website, the content of which we will build up during theyear.

The introduction of a completely new competition - The BSGA Team TrioChampionships. (To replace the Carita Team Championships).

A revision of the scoring system used in floor and vault events bringing it more inlinewith the system used in the FIG/UEG code of practice.

We know that a UK Olympics and Paralympics offer a once in a lifetime opportunity. I hopethat by the 2013 AGM we are in a position to show how our association has played its smallpart to fulfil the legacy promised by Lord Coe.

I Howard Todd(Chair BSGA)

Acrobatic Gymnastics & Tumbling Gymnastics Competition Rules

Judging Guidelines and Rules The following set of guidelines have been produced with the BSGA Acrobatic Gymnastics & Tumbling Gymnastics Championships in mind. They are based around the BGA Award Scheme for Acrobatic Gymnastics & Tumbling Gymnastics in Pair work and a simplified set of elements for Tumbling. The competition is aimed specifically at developing the sport in schools and with school gymnastics in mind, as such there are some differences which judges should take into account. There are nine Pair events, three Group events and six Tumbling events. General Age Groups: Under 11; Under 14; Over 14 - Under 19. Events: Boys Pairs, Girls Pairs, Mixed Pairs, Groups, Boys Tumbling, Girls Tumbling.

Age as of 1st September in the academic year of competition. No competitor may compete in more than one age group in the same discipline, e.g. U11 Girls Pairs

and U14 Girls Pairs. Competitors may compete in any number of events within the regulations although the competition

should not be unnecessarily disrupted to accommodate a performer who has entered more than one section. This may mean that warm-up in one or more events are missed.

All competitors must be in full time education. Pairs and Groups must be from the same school. Gymnasts may perform in the next higher age group but not in a lower one. An U11 performer may

compete in the U14 event, (if at the same school) but not in the 014 - U19 event. (An U14 may not compete in a U11 event). One gymnast in the partnership should be in the correct age group - deviation from this is only at the discretion of the Regional Organiser in order to enter a full team in National finals.

Schools must be affiliated through their Region to the BSGA before entering their Regional round. The facility does not exist for pupils in single sex schools to partner pupils from another school. Under 19 competitors must be in full time education.

Selection Only one Pair and one Group from each age group and discipline may proceed to the Finals. These will be those that won their section at the Regional Finals, regardless of their score or ability. In the event of there being only one Pair represented in any one section they will automatically qualify for the final. However, the individual teacher has the right to withdraw their Pair, Tumbler or Group from the finals.

Each Region may enter two Tumblers in each age group. In the event of their being no entries in a section the Region may select representatives, who must be nominated on the official entry form at the same time as the rest of the team.

Substitutes Any changes to the nominated performers should be notified in writing to the Competition Organiser, from the Regional Officer 3 days prior to the date of the competition. Team Competitions There will be three team competitions. One for each Age Group. All positions count towards the final score of the team (both tumbling scores will count). If a region is not represented in a floor discipline then their score will be 13. If they are not represented in tumbling section their score will be 26 for each missing tumbler. For first place a team will score 1, 2 for second and so on. The team with the lowest score will be the winner.

Evaluation of Tumbling Exercises

1. General Notes:

a) All Tumble runs will be marked out of 10.00 b) All Tumble runs will be performed on a matted, not sprung, tumble run. c) Each performer will perform three runs d) Each run will contain a minimum of five elements from the list. e) Additional elements to those on the list may be included, but will not be credited. They may however

accrue technical deductions. f) No element may be performed more than twice in any Tumble g) Elements may be repeated in different tumble runs, but no tumble run may be identical. h) Walkouts do not constitute a different element but may be added to any element on the list. i) A reuther board may be used at the beginning of the run for any element listed. j) No more than 3 elements may be jumps

2. Judges May Deduct Under Six Headings:

a) Deviation A tumble should be performed astride the centre line of the track. Deductions ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 may be made for any deviation from the centre line. Should the Tumbler deviate from the centre line they are advised to continue parallel to the centre line rather than strive to regain the line. A zig-zag course could lead to several deductions under this heading although the maximum is 1.0. b) Finish The Tumbler should finish with the body vertical in a two foot landing with feet astride the centre line at the end of the tumble i.e. last element may not be a cartwheel or walkout. Any foot movements, arm and body movements to maintain balance, or stooping forward, will be penalised. Penalties range from 0.1 to 1.0. c) Tempo A Tumble should be i) Fast and ii) Maintain momentum or accelerate throughout. A Tumbler can incur deductions for loss of momentum between elements. These deductions are additional to the technical deductions and range from 0.3 to 1.0 for stopping. d) Difficulty Each element in the Tumbling exercise is assumed to have a difficulty of 1.0 for the purposes of defining the difficulty of the routine, when the following occur:

I. Omission of an element: deduct 1.0 (the difficulty value of the missing element). Deduct a further 1.0 for failing to perform the exercise as prescribed, e.g. the exercise would be marked out of 8.0.

II. Changing an element: If an element changes beyond recognition to become an element not included on the list, and in so doing there are only four elements from the list then 1.0 (the maximum technical deduction for the element) is deducted CJP, with a further 1.0 mark for the non-performance of the element. The routine would be marked out of 8.0.

III. Additional steps: If a handspring to two feet is followed by a cartwheel, the exercise ends at this point for judging purposes. Deduct 1.0 for the steps, deduct a further 1.0 for failing to meet the requirement of the exercise, e.g. If an exercise started with a handspring and steps were taken immediately after the first element, the exercise would be marked out of 4.0.

IV. Fall: Deduct 1.0. Also deduct for any element not performed and 1.0 for failing to meet the requirements of the exercise.

V. Stop: As for a fall. VI. Both feet or hands outside the boundary line: as for a fall.

e) General Impression A Tumbling exercise should be fast, ideally accelerating throughout. It should have rhythm and lightness and an uninterrupted smooth flow. Fulfill all the requirements of shape and height. All landings should be exact. A Judge may deduct 0.1 to 1.0 for his general impression of the exercise. Deductions can also be made under this heading for untidiness, discourtesy, and behaviour of the coach; however the maximum deductions under this heading cannot exceed 1.0.

29

Faults for Composition and General Impression Minors Errors (0.1)

- insufficient lightness and rhythm - repeated small technical faults - uncertain approach - indistinct start and finish to exercise - untidy or immodest dress

Significant Faults (0.2)

- incorrect dress - repeated significant technical deductions - visible effort or strain

Serious Errors (0.3)

- presence of a spotter - most elements performed with serious technical faults

f) Technical Deductions Minor Errors (0.1)

- slight bending or spreading of arms or legs - slight deviation in direction - landing with a small bounce or step - other small insignificant errors in technique - slight lack of height in somersaults (below shoulder height of the performer)

Significant Faults (0.2 to 0.3)

- a distinct bending or spreading of the arms or legs - a large step in landing or three small steps - poor shape in the element - distinct deviation from the centre line - over or under turn in somersaults up to 45 degrees - slight loss of tempo - deep bend in landing - execution of somersault at waist level

Serious Faults (0.5)

- distinct loss of tempo - additional steps after landing (more then three) - touching the boundary line of the runway with one hand or foot - significant bending of arms or

legs - over or underturn in twisting somersaults (more than 45 degrees) - serious technical errors - landing a somersault on one leg when it should have been two - touching the floor briefly with the

hands - stepping out of the exercise area with one hand or foot. Non-Performance Faults (1.0) - a stop in the routine (remainder not evaluated) - crossing the boundary line of the track with both hands or feet (remainder not evaluated) - fall on

head, hands and feet, front, back or seat - physical assistance from a spotter (element and remainder of exercise not evaluated)

Evaluation of Pair & Group Exercises (please note the changes to elements required) Pair elements will be taken from the BGA Gold, Silver, and Bronze Acrobatics Award Scheme. The pair elements should be performed following the guidance given in this handbook. The position of the free arms and legs are optional. Each pair must choose four pair elements and three agilities from the diagrams in the handbook. The individual elements must be performed either simultaneously or in immediate canon. All pair balances must show a static position for 3 seconds in the balance phase of the element. Timing of the element begins when the position is static. A 0.3 deduction will be made by the CJP for each missing second in a balance. There is no requirement for a static hold in teprime consideration. In mixed pairs the male must be the base. In other pair events partners may change as the base. Any of the pair skills may be performed with one-arm support if the teacher considers the element safe for the performers. Stands on shoulders may be performed with support from two hands, one hand or without support from the base. Floor routines will be performed on a 12 x 12m square matted, not sprung floor area. The use of a sprung floor is not permitted for a Regional selection event. Additional Agilities or Pair Elements No additional difficulty will be accredited to the performers for extra pair or individual elements although such elements are likely to accrue deductions if not performed well. Scoring A judging panel for the Pair and Group exercise comprises four judges and one CJP (Chief of Judging Panel). The judges mark the routine for Technical excellence and Artistic merit from 10.00 regardless of time faults or compositional requirements. The final score for a pair or group is the average of the two middle marks of the four judges with a tolerance range of 0.5 for all four marks. The CJP makes deductions from the final score for time faults and compositional requirements. The CJP also marks the routine and records a score, though this is not taken into account on the first instance. If there is a tied position, this is resolved by:

1. Taking tie still exists: 2. Taking the average of all marks including the recorded mark of the CJP. 3. If a tie still results then a joint award is made

Group Sequence Requirement

Six competitors per group Any combination of boys and girls is acceptable Age regulations apply as for general regulations

All six competitors will perform the same three agilities. These must be performed in synch or in canon. There should be no contact between gymnasts during the performance of these elements. Agilities however may be linked together to form a sequence, e.g. cartwheel, immediate one-arm cartwheel. Each group will perform three pair elements from the diagrams in the handbook i.e. the same element at the same time. Each pair must be in contact with their partners throughout the balance phase (entry, balance, and exit) during balance elements but have no contact with other pairs. In addition they will also perform ONE GROUP BALANCE, involving all members of the team and in which the members are in contact. The structure of the group balance should be such that all members are playing a part in the maintenance of the final balance. To this end all members of the team should be in support or supporting another member of the team. It is considered insufficient merely to make contact while still being on the floor. The creativity, aesthetics and difficulty of this balance will be taken into account by the judges in their 2.0 mark for artistry. Pyramids where partners are merely in contact rather than in support will be penalised under the Artistry heading. The structure of this balance is left to the discretion of the teacher. The Group balance does not have to be made of elements from the awards. Schools who won the Group National title in 2012 will be automatically selected. That region may then enter two groups in that age range. Compositional Requirements If one or more Compositional requirements are not fulfilled the CJP will deduct 1.0 from the final score together with a further 1.0 to represent the value of the missing element. This applies to individual elements and pair/group elements. Individual elements if one of a partnership fails to perform a skill, it is considered as not performed by both (all) performers and the deduction is made as previously described. If one of the partners performs the skill and the other makes a recognisable attempt for instance aiming to perform a handstand forward roll but failing to complete the roll the 1.0 is deducted for the value of the element but no deduction is made for Compositional Requirements.

Pair/Group Elements If the element is completely missed (only three/two pair skills are shown, or an incorrect move is performed),

the CJP deducts 1.0 mark for the skill value and another 1.0 for Compositional Requirements. If the element is attempted but does not reach the final position, then the CJP deducts 1.0 for the value of the

element, 1.0 for Compositional Requirements and a further 0.9 for time faults. (total CJP deduction of 2.9) The performers are permitted to rebuild the balance. If they do, then they regain the 1.0 for SR and the 1.0 for element value, but the 0.9 time fault deduction is still applied. (Total CJP deduction of 0.9). Technical judges deduct 0.5 for an incomplete element.

i.e. the performer starts to climb, then immediately returns to the floor and begins afresh, there is no deduction by the CJP and a 0.5 technical deduction is made by the panel.

General

The first movement by a competitor shall constitute the beginning of the exercise Each pair, group or individual element carries a difficulty mark of 1.0 Pair and group elements should be held static for three seconds. 0.3 will be deducted

by the CJP for each missing second. Evaluation of Pair: Technical merit from 9.0, artistry from 1.0 Evaluation of Group : Technical merit from 8.0, Artistry from 2.0

Technical faults Technical errors include: landing faults, entries and exits from elements, shape and position, falls and breakdowns in the execution of elements. Minor errors (0.1)

Inaccurate position of partners in a balanced element Slight instability in balances Slight bending or spreading of arms Small hop or step in dismounts

Significant Errors (0.2 – 0.3)

Visible strain in strength elements Pronounced bending or spreading of arms to maintain balance Loss of balance with no more than two steps Distinct bending of arms in handstands Slight touch of a partner or the floor Significant loss of tempo Poor body lightness

Serious errors (0.5)

Artistry Mark Minor errors (0.1)

failure to use all four quarters of the floor uneven distribution of the elements throughout the routine failure to use one of the levels high, medium or low repetition of similar elements or poses slightly noticeable divergence from the musical accompaniment small deviations in synchronised movement wearing jewellery adjusting dress while performing (0.1 each time) failure to present at the start or end of the routine

Significant faults (0.2)

only half the floor area used majority of routine performed at one level lack of variety in pace of routine

Serious errors (0.3)

lack of harmony between music and movements throughout the routine big deviations in synchronised movement only one variety of pace throughout the routine poor quality and variety of choreography use of additional matting prompting from the sidelines or to each other display of poor sportsmanship

Deductions for Artistry should not exceed 1.0 in the Pair routines and 2.0 in the group routines

Time faults Pair balance elements must be held for 3 seconds, and the Group balance for 3 seconds. Timing starts at the moment a definite balance has been achieved. The time limit for Pair and Group exercises is 2 minutes. The timing begins from the movement of one or more of the performers and ends when a definite finish position is shown. Every routine must be timed by an appointed timekeeper who must not have any other responsibility. The timekeeper must sit next to the CJP who will also time the routine and who will make the final decision on the appropriateness of any deduction. The precise duration of each routine must be recorded, and the record sheet signed by the timekeeper and the CJP. If, for any reason one or more routines are not timed, then the time deduction may not be applied to any performer in that section

.

Music All Pair and Group routines should be performed to music, which may be instrumental or orchestral, but lyrics are not permitted. Voice may be used as an instrument, provided lyrics are not used. The routine starts and finishes in an aesthetic held position. This may not be one of the technical skills. The routine should show a relationship with the music, and the end of the routine should coincide with the end of the music. If the music fails during a performance the Pair or Group should continue to perform their routine. If the fault is that of the equipment then a re-run may be offered, time permitting. If the fault is caused through a poor recording no re-run will be allowed. CJP deductions

Time faults for balance elements 0.3 for each second missing Music faults that are the responsibility of the teacher 0.3 e.g. poor reproduction of music, faulty CD Exceeding the allowed time of the routine 0.3 (see above) Finishing before or after the end of the music 0.3 Missing elements : 1.0 every time Very significant size difference between partners 0.2 Stepping over the floor area boundary 0.1 each step Undergarments visible or immodest dress 0.3 for each performer Theatrical dress such as animal representations, attachments, uniforms/suits, flowers or excessive ribbons in

the hair, or heavy make-up 0.3 Clothing not matching or complementary 0.3

Group Balance Each team must create one voluntary static pyramid involving all six team members. The composition of this balance should demonstrate the skill and inventiveness of the group. All partners should be actively contributing to the group pyramid each person must either be supported or be supporting another group member. The creativity, aesthetics and difficulty of this balance will be taken into account by the judges in their 2.0 mark for Artistry. Pyramids where partners are merely in contact rather than in support will be penalised under the Artistry heading. Dress code Gymnasts must perform in accepted gymnastics clothing including gym shorts, T-shirts and catsuits. Theatrical make-up, exaggerated hairstyles, ribbons, flowers or themed (e.g. soldier costumes) are not permitted and if worn will incur deductions from the CJP as shown above. Throughout these rules we have tried to mirror the work being done at the lower levels of acrobatic clubs. This is in line with government policy, which seeks to link sport being done in clubs. In the event of any queries over these rules, or any other Acrobatic or Tumbling questions please contact the ACROBATIC REPRESENTATIVE (currently Tim Wild) listed in the BSGA Committee Members, and he will give a final & binding decision. Regional Team Entries to your Regional Organiser as shown on the Regional Pages.

All trophies from School Gym National Finals 2012 should be returned to Verity Trevor-Morgan on or before 9th March 2013.

Trampolining For Schools With the inclusion of trampolining as an option in the GCSE and A-level PE syllabus, there has been an increase in interest in this discipline within schools, and there are now very few secondary schools which are not equipped with at least one trampoline. As many schools share their sports facilities with public provision, it has become easy in many areas for children to progress from trampolining within their PE classes to participating in more specialised training sessions that are run by the Local Authority outside school hours, and from there into competitive clubs. Whilst club members have access to a wide range of competitive opportunities provided by the clubs and by British Gymnastics, a series of `Schools Trampoline Competitions' has been adopted by BSGA. This series aims to offer competitions for schools per se, and with particular emphasis on accommodating the relative novice who does not receive training outside the school. To this end, all athletes are entered under the name of their school (even if they are trained at a club). Competitors are grouped by age and gender; each enters as an individual, with teams being formed by three or four individual competitors in any age/gender group. There are two parallel series of competitions: the `Novice' events are restricted to athletes who are not registered with BG for national competitions, whilst the `Elite' series is open to athletes of any standard. Events within each series are run together, with each having its own trophies and titles. The competitions are open to any school and FE college below `University grade', with an upper age limit of 18 years at the start of the school year. 6x6mm competition beds will be offered at both levels. 6x4mm beds may be offered to the Elite level entrants at the O discretion. Both series comprise three `rounds'. The first is held at Regional level (South, North West, etc.); Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland are individual Regions for the purposes of these competitions. These Regional rounds are held early in December. From the Regional events, the top three individuals and top two teams in each age/gender group progress to a `Zonal' round (rather like a semi-final). There are three nominal Zones, covering the South. Midlands, and North of Britain. Wales competes in the Midlands Zone, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland compete in the northern Zone. The Zonal rounds are staged in January. From the Zonal events, the top three individuals and top two teams again progress, to the National Schools Championships, which are staged in March. The Zonal and National competitions are organised by individual Regions on a rota basis. Because the trampoline coaches in each Region are also committed to hosting events within the BG national competitions calendar, the rota has to be planned in co-operation with the BC National Trampoline Competitions Committee. Attire: In the Awards Ceremony at Zonal & National Levels, competitors must present themselves in competition attire. `Retired' Competitors: Competitors who have retired from National competitions & wish to enter a Novice Level competition must apply for permission to the Schools Trampolining Working Group. Such permission must be obtained before the closing date for entry to the Regional competitions. Permission will not normally be given to athletes who have ever competed at National Grade 2 level. Officials: Schools submitting more than 3 competitors must provide at least 1 official. Schools submitting 6+ competitors must provide a judge amongst their officials. Accompanying' Officials: Every competitor must be accompanied by a suitably-qualified coach who will take responsibility for the competitor's performance on the trampoline. Such a coach does not need to be a member of staff of the competitor's school. The coach must be named on the entry form for each round of the competition. Should the nominated coach fail to attend, a suitably qualified substitute may be requested to offer his/her services. If no substitute can be secured, then the competitor must not be allowed to compete.

Does your school need TRAMPOLINE JUDGES?

If your school is taking part in the annual Schools Trampoline Championships, then you will need a

knowledge of judging and the duties of competition officials.

The Schools Trampoline Working Group is staging special Judging/Officials courses for schools staff, in

order to help schools to take part in the Championships.

Courses will be arranged around the Regions to meet demand. If you would like to take this opportunity, please contact:

Ron Linton([email protected]).

Routines Competitors will perform one Compulsory Routine and one Voluntary Routine. In the voluntary routine at Open Level, a maximum 7.0 will be awarded, whilst in the Closed Level a maximum difficulty mark of 2.0 will be awarded. The compulsory routines are listed below:

Elite Novice 1. Full Twist Jump OR 1. Back Somersault (Tucked) 1. Full Twist Jump 2. Straddle Jump 2. Straddle Jump 2. Straddle Jump 3. Seat Landing 3. Seat Landing 3. Seat Landing 4. Half Twist to Seat Landing 4. Half Twist to Seat Landing 4. Half Twist to Seat 5. Half Twist to Feet 5. Half Twist to Feet 5. Half Twist to Feet 6. Piked Jump 6. Piked Jump 6. Piked Jump 7. Back Landing 7. Back Landing 7. Back Landing 8. Half Twist to Feet 8. Half Twist to Feet 8. Half Twist to Feet 9. Tucked Jump 9. Tucked Jump 9. Tucked Jump 10. Front Somersault (Tucked) 10 Full Twist Jump 10. Half Twist Jump In the voluntary routine at Novice Level, competitors may not perform more than three skills which have more than 270º of somersault. A full copy of the rules is listed on the schools trampolining web site http://schools.trampolining.net

Support for P.E. Teachers As teachers have to be familiar with a wide range of sports, it is not practical for them to take a governing body coaching qualification in every sport that their schools may promote. The NCF and BG have jointly produced a `Trampoline coach' award for qualified P.E. teachers that has a narrower syllabus than the BG Level 2 Coach award, but is sufficient to enable teachers to coach trampolining within their school environment to GCSE requirements, and to a standard suitable for entry into the Schools Trampoline Competitions. These courses can be run at the request of an LEA, and it is hoped that they can be promoted via the medium of the BSGA.

Liaison Within the Regional framework of BG/BSGA there is a `Schools Secretary' on each Trampoline Technical Committee, and also a National Schools Competitions Secretary on the BG Trampoline Competitions Committee. These officers offer a medium of liaison and advice over matters of schools trampolining within their own Regions, and will be pleased to hear from any teacher in need of assistance. A list of these officers is in Regional Information. Representatives for Schools Trampolining

BSGA JUNIOR TEAM EVENTS by Joan JackmanWhen Vicki first asked me to write a little about BSGA and the history of its Junior Team competitionI was happy to oblige – until I started! Our competition structure is so involved and ‘there is nothingnew under the sun’ as is proved later on!The first English Schools Gymnastics Association (ESGA) handbook was 1976 (I have them all!).President: Bob Currier; Vice: Nik Stuart; Chair: Bob Garner; Secretary: Frank Hughes; National SchoolsOrganiser; Joan Jackman; Boys Coach; John Atkinson; Girls Coach; Bob Garner. Affiliations were:Secondary Schools £3.00; Primary Schools £2.00 and Individuals £1.50.The first Junior School Team Championships in 1972 were based on the BAGA Sunday Times AwardsScheme and took place at the American School in London. In 1973 they moved to NottinghamUniversity and then on to the well remembered Michael Sobell Sports Centre in London, sponsoredby ESGA in conjunction with the Olympic Gymnasium Company, where they remained for manymemorable years. They have had many sponsors over the years – Mattison; Saul & Roberts; Lilia White;Kit-E-Kat; Errys Printers; Harrison Drape and Carita House. In 1978 the Championships moved to Gloucester and it became a two day event, with the Under 11’son the Saturday performing to a capacity audience of 1,000 spectators and on Sunday, slightly fewerfor the Under 13’s, but still a very appreciative audience. This was the year of the leotard – in a brightrange of colours! 1978 also saw the first Sports Acrobatics Championships sponsored by Kay-Metzeler held in Coventry. In Artistic Gymnastics in 1979 we competed in the World School Games in Izmir, Turkey which wasthe beginning of the ESGA travelling world wide to include: World School Games in Florence; Boyscompeting in Belgium, Hungary, Holland & Iceland; Girls in Sweden & Finland; and the Ulster Gamesfor both boys and girls, to name but a few.For Schools competitions it was now time to look at changes to the Junior Team Championships andin 1981 the question was asked ‘should we introduce girls, boys and mixed teams?’The competition moved to Crystal Palace for a number of years, before losing its sponsor and beingsupported by the BAGA for a return to Gloucester for the National Finals. We were now gettingschools from Belfast, Glasgow and Wales entering the competition.I986 saw the introduction of the Floor & Vault Competition for Secondary School pupils with theNational Finals being held in Birmingham. In 1988 we moved to Chelmsford for the Junior Team, wherein an attempt to get more boys teams entering the age groups changed to Under 11 and Under 14.Age groups changed once more, to Under 16 in 1992 for the Floor, Vault & Group Sequencecompetition or Junior Team, which became known as the Carita House Junior Team Championships, until its final year! And this coincided with yet another return to Gloucester for the Finals. In 1993 thequestion was asked ‘if no more boys enter should we allow two boys teams from each region?’The Carita House Junior Team Championships remained relatively unchanged apart from a few smallrule changes. The finals were held in Cannock, Bath & Birmingham before finally resting at FentonManor since 2005.Joan Jackman

AddendumAs you can see from Joan’s report, questions were being asked as early as 1981 about increasingparticipation for boys! We tried two teams from each region in 2012, with enormous success for thegirls but unfortunately resulting in a reduction of the number of boys participating overall! The new competition for 2013 retains all that is good about the Junior Team Championships i.e. Floor,Vault & Group Sequence, except with reduced numbers! Thus allowing Schools at regional level to enterlots of teams of 3, and increase participation in their School Clubs. Please boys, coaches of boys, andteachers of boys encourage your boys to emulate the great Team GB boys and embrace the new TeamTrio competition!

Carita House Junior Team National Final 2012Although we did not know at the time of these British Finals, this was to be the last Carita House JuniorTeam Championships! Carita was first linked with the BSGA in 1982, when they took over thesponsorship of the Sports Acrobatics & Tumbling Championships. Throughout the thirty years that theyhave supported BSGA they have sponsored the Floor & Vault British Finals prior to the Junior TeamChampionships of latter years. It is with sadness and much appreciation of all that they have done forSchools Gymnastics over the years that we say a huge thank you and good luck in the future.48 teams travelled to Fenton Manor for these National Finals in March and a great day was had bygymnasts, officials and spectators alike. The growth in numbers this year had been through allowingthe second place team from each region to come to the Finals and compete in a Plate competition. This was successful as far as the girls were concerned where a further six Under 11 teams and nineUnder 16 teams took this opportunity, but unfortunately the boys did not take up the offer and numbersdecreased even further. Let us hope with the introduction of the new Team Trio competition and riding onthe success of the Team GB Men that more boys will want to participate in gymnastics in years to come!In the Under 11 age group the South continued to dominate with Maltman’s Green and Chalfont StPeter regaining their titles, and with strength in depth Stoke Poges (S) took the Under 11 Boys Platetitle, with Chalfont St Peter’s girls taking the silver in their Plate final. The Under 16 age group saw abattle from the other end of the country with Newcastle RGS from the North winning the boys andCraigmount, from Scotland, coming out on top over London and the South East. Congratulations mustalso go to Royal Masonic (E) who’s winning score in the Plate Final would have seen them medal inthe main competition. If the Team Trio competition is a success this year we may see two teams from each region competingon an equal footing, in years to come.Well done to all the teams who took part in this last ever Junior Team National Final, and a huge thankyou to everyone, and I mean everyone – too numerous to mention - who helped me in enabling thesmooth running of this competition!

Report for School Gym 2012School Gym 2012! The Queen’s Jubilee! And London 2012 – the home of the Olympic & Paralympic Games!A year to celebrate in style! And School Gym 2012 certainly set the trend for what lay ahead! A friendly, happyand relaxed atmosphere prevailed over Fenton Manor throughout the weekend and everyone was entertained bya very high standard of gymnastics from young people from across the country. The bringing together of thetwo disciplines: Floor & Vault alongside the Acrobatics & Tumbling is now firmly established in the calendar, displaying the very best in schools gymnastics in Great Britain today. It must be remembered that “It’s not thecolour you take away but the colour you come in” as all these gymnasts are already champions of their region,as are the athletes who represented their country in the Olympic Games, already champions of their country! The Floor & Vault always sees a great response from the boys with 10 regions represented within the threeage groups and 12 of the 13 regions represented in the three mixed sections. With the introduction of the newTeam Trio competition for next year, and the success of the Team GB men, I hope this will encourage evenmore boys to participate in the future. In the Under 11 age group we saw Tormead girls from the South East and St Anne Line boys from the Eastnarrowly retaining their titles from strong opposition from Port Regis in the South West. Tables were turnedon Chalfont St Peter (S) this year being pipped to the post by Grafton (L). Outstanding individual performancesfrom Lottie Smith (EM) and Imogen King (SW) returning accumulative scores of 18.75 and 18.7 respectively– contenders for the Emma James trophy in the future!Tumbling continues to be dominated by the Welsh, medalling in four of the six categories. Well executed skills, showing increased momentum were performed by gymnasts of all ages providing an exciting competition for all.The Acrobatics competition is always inspirational, imaginative and highly creative and routines throughoutthe weekend continued to enthral the audience and judges alike. Maltman’s Green girls from the South are tobe congratulated for achieving their goal, winning the Under 11 Group, after many frustrating years, demonstrating that determination and hard work pays off in the end! Welcome back and congratulations toSurbiton (L) who medalled in six out of the twelve sections, including gold in the Under 13 group and Over13 girls pairs.May I take this opportunity to thank everyone, as the success of this competition is due to the cooperation ofall involved especially the friendly and helpful staff of Fenton Manor; the judges; scorers; warm up marshalls;floor managers; teachers; coaches; parents and friends who continue to give me their support to facilitate thesmooth running of this event.I hope everyone enjoyed the British Final and took away many happy memories from School Gym 2012.

Scottish Schools GymnasticsAnnual Report and results to BSGA AGM

I can’t believe another year of schools gymnastics is almost drawing to a close as I write thisreport. It seems to have flown by as have the last 14years in which I have held the position ofChairperson of the Scottish Schools Panel - but that too is drawing to a close with this my lastreport as I have decided to step down from this role but will continue on the panel. The schoolspanel will elect a new chair at our annual review and planning day in June. I am pleased to saythat I have survived the ups and downs of the post and been privileged to experience theenormous joys of seeing schools gymnastics flourish throughout the regions in Scotland and alsofurther afield with the enormous success the Scottish teams have had over the years in BritishSchools National finals.

This year we had our usual rounds of regional heats which culminated in our Scottish SchoolsFloor and Vault finals at Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth in March. This once again was a huge eventwith increased entry at our Pre-Level 1 and Level 3 categories. With last minute judging call offsand a huge entry of school teams we found it difficult to keep to time but nonetheless our judgesand scorers did a sterling job to get through such a big programme. We are in a way victims ofour own success having such a large entry of all age groups compete over one day in the mainarena and will now look to see how we can streamline the competition to make it a betterexperience for competitors, spectators and all involved.

Our regional heats for Carita House resulted in two teams going to National finals in March.Craigmount High School competed in the main competition where they performed superbly to wingold and be crowned Carita House Champions -the first time a Scottish team has achieved thisaccolade. Kirkland High School competed in the plate competition and in their first experience ofa National final performed exceptionally well with all gymnasts enjoying the whole experience. InMay I had the great pleasure as Team Manager of taking four teams and their coaches to theNational Floor and Vault finals in Stoke. It was a great weekend of competition especially for ourtwo medal winning teams – the U/11 team from Oakbank in Perth in their first national finalwinning bronze along with the U/19 Craigmount team also winning bronze. The U/13 team fromCraigmount and the U/19 mixed team from James Young High School both narrowly missing outon a medal position but produced excellent performances on both floor and vault. It was a wellorganized, smoothly run competition – well done to Vicki and all those who were involved.

Unfortunately our Schools Gymfest date clashed with the National finals in Stoke but that did notdetract from an entry of over 25 school teams and invited display teams having a great day of noncompetitive, fun filled gymnastics at Bells in Perth. I am very grateful to a wonderful group ofschools gymnastics enthusiasts led by Jennifer Mann who ran the whole day while we were inStoke. Schools Gymfest grows year on year and is the ideal way for us to end the schoolsgymnastics year.

In concluding this report I am extremely grateful to the many people who have supported me andthe work of the schools panel throughout my time as Chairperson. I have valued the friendly advice, encouragement and support of all the dedicated members of the schools panel and our PresidentLynn Milne who somehow managed to talk me into taking on this job 14 years ago!! A huge thankyou to you all for your devoted time, effort and vision in moving schools gymnastics forward. Thanksalso to judges, helpers, SGA office staff (especially Ashleigh) and to all the gymnastics colleaguesand friends I have made through SGA and BSGA over the years who all willingly give of their timeand to the teachers/coaches, gymnasts and parents who have made it so worthwhile. To everyone,my sincere thanks for your support of Schools Gymnastics in Scotland.

BSGA Girls Apparatus Championships 2012 The final BSGA Girls Apparatus Championships took place in Newcastle in March 2012. Next event will be run by British Gymnastics and take place in May 2013. However, we hope that City of Newcastle will continue their support of the new event. This year saw the South West dominate the competition by taking both the Junior and Senior Individual titles with Phoebe Turner and Ruby Harrold and also the Senior Team title which they won by over 7 marks. The Junior Team title was won by the West Midlands. Thanks again to everyone who has supported the event in the past especially the coaches, judges and gymnasts and those regions who have played host to the competition. We look forward to a successful new event starting next year.

Report on Welsh Schools for 2011-2012Another School Year of competitions is over and at present we have a healthy membership ofschools throughout Wales.I feel that the schools section of Welsh gymnastics is not supported as much as it could be. It is verydifficult to get any help with judging and organising the competitions. These children are the grassroots of our sport and they deserve a little more. November 2011The Novice final was held at W.I.S. The competition had 4 age groups: Under 14, Under 12, Under 11and Under 9. Schools were represented from Cardiff, SE Wales, Dyfed and North East Wales, WestWales and Powys. The standard continues to improve thanks to the dedicated staff at the schools.During the day we had over 300 gymnasts competing. February 2012The Floor and Vault competition and also the Acrobatic Gymnastics competitions were held inFebruary. The winning school from each section boys, girls and a mixed team represented WelshSchools in the British finalsMarch 2012We held the inter Counties competition at WIS –Again a very successful and enjoyable day. It was very good to welcome back West Glamorgan. 6counties took part in the competition, unfortunately we still do not have any representatives fromPowys and North East in this county championship, although North East schools do haverepresentatives in the Novice and Floor and Vault and Acrobatic Gymnastics. South East were thewinners and many congratulations to them. In the tumbling competition the top two tumblers wereselected to represent Welsh Schools at the British Championships.May 2012We travelled to Stoke for the British Championships with nearly a full complement of 80 gymnasts. No representatives in the Over 13 Mixed or Over 13 Floor and Vault. There are two separate competitions Floor and Vault and Acrobatic and Tumbling Gymnastics. Thestandard of gymnastics in our schools in the Floor and Vault was excellent, and I know that each ofthe children who competed gained a lot of experience from taking part in the competition, not onlydid the children benefit but also the teachers and coaches. The Acrobatic and Tumbling Gymnastics team had a lot to live up to this year to achieve the numberof individual British Champions we had won in previous years, but even with quite an inexperiencedteam they managed to perform as a team taking the overall title as British Team Champions. We had to make late alterations as some gymnasts did not turn up and failed to let us know at all, which was very disappointing, but this did not deter and gymnasts were ready to step in and makeup the team everybody performed well and they received their just rewards- Well done toeverybody I was really proud to be Welsh.May 2012May I congratulate all the gymnasts who represented Welsh Schools at the UK Games. Thanks to themen’s and women’s tech for organising the team to take part and in this prestigious competition. Congratulations to the individual winners it was a pleasure to sit and watch the immense standardof the Welsh gymnasts.Just to finish my report may I thank personally all the coaches who accompanied the children thisyear, to the parents who brought them to the competition, Eileen Budd and Annette Brown for theircontinued support and effort to make sure Welsh Schools have every opportunity to developgymnastics. It was a great pleasure and honour for me to be part of this achievement.
