The UQ Faculty of Engineering, Archi-tecture, and IT ('EAIT') is staging an undergraduate design competition to stimulate ingenious, innovative, and interdisciplinary thinking in EAIT stu-dents. The competition is supported by the Brisbane Airport Corporation ('BAC') and is administered by the School of Civil Engineering.PRIZESThere are five prizes available:Best Entries The overall winning entry will be awarded $2,000. Second place will be awarded $1,000 and third place will be awarded $500. All best en- tries will additionally recieve a certifi cate of commendation.Best Young Entry The best team entry whose mem- bers are all in their 1st or 2nd year of study will receive $750.Best Interdisciplinary Entry The best team entry whose mem- bers are all in different EAIT Schools will be awarded $750.

Entrants can be eligible to win more than one prize. The results of the competition will be announced in late May 2015. Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony in June.

THE BRIEFTHE COMPETITION

BRISBANE AIRPORT NORTHERN TERMINAL

EAIT Design Competition 2015

Brisbane Airport is creating a new domestic terminal which will be opera-tional by mid-2019. The design is at “concept stage” and BAC is currently seeking innovative and cost effec-tive design proposals to create an iconic new terminal building. To get the broadest possible range of de-sign ideas, BAC are inviting UQ EAIT students to submit their own innova-tive concepts for the new Domestic Northern Terminal (DNT).

The DNT is a two level terminal intend-ed for use by low cost carrier airlines. Fundamental client goals are therefore to provide gates to simultaneously service ten Code C aircraft, optimise use, minimise construction cost, and provide flexibility to meet future market demands.

The successful planning, design, and management of an airport termi-nal requires the integration of a huge number of architectural and multi-dis-ciplinary engineering considerations. There is therefore scope for students across all EAIT Schools to apply their disciplinary learnings (or collaborate across discipline boundaries) to pro-duce relevant innovations.

Entries must demonstrate innovation in one or more of the following areas. The proposed innovation may be as specific (e.g. terminal signage) or broad (e.g. overal terminal building and systems design) as desired.

Examples: baggage drop-off / reclaim; mechanical services; airline scheduling and operations; automation systems; passenger information systems.

Low Cost / Rapid Construction

Examples: building elements and su-perstructure; construction processes; recycled / low-cost material usage; minimise construction disruption.

Safety / Sustainability

Long-Term Usage / Flexibility

Systems Innovation

Thoroughfare / Terminal Usability

Examples: fire safety systems; emer-gency systems / access; green con-struction / operation; waste generation / disposal; air quality; noise mitigation.

Examples: passenger check-in / secu-rity screening area; retail / food facili-ties; ground access / safety; walk out / bussing facilities; curbside facilities.

Submissions must focus on the innovative aspects of the proposed design, and explain (in concept, but not in detail) how the design is innovative, feasi-ble, and cost effective.

Examples: maintenance; reconfigur-ability / renovation; expansion / demo-lition; extended revenue sources such as accommodation or carparking.

THE RULESEligibilityThe competition is open to students currently enrolled in an under-graduate or coursework masters program in the EAIT. This includes full-time, part-time, or dual-degree enrolments, where one of the dual programs is an EAIT program. Entrants must be enrolled for the duration of Semester 1, 2015.

Entrants can register by submitting the registration form by Friday 27 March (Week 4). Forms can be emailed to [email protected] or submitted to the School of Civil Engineering Recep-tion (Level 4 AEB). Submissions may be made by individuals or teams consisting of two to four members. Only team submissions will be eligible for the Best Young and Best Interdisci-plinary Prizes. Entries will automatically be considered for all prizes for which they are eligible.

SubmissionsEntrants are to submit their deliver-able by Friday 1st May (Week 8). Submissions should be made to the above email address or the School of Civil Engineering reception.

Entries shall be a brief report, no more than 10 single-sided A4 pages in length. The report should include an explanation of the entrants’ ideas and a professional appraisal the ideas' po-tential benefits and feasibility. All draw-ings, plans, and relevant details must be included within the page limit.

Judging The submissions will be assessed by a panel including at least one repre-sentative each from UQ and Brisbane Aiport. Submissions will be assessed primarily on addressing the brief and report presentation. At their discre-tion, judges may announce additional commendations without any financial awards or withhold prizes if there are no submissions of an adequate stand-ard. The judges’ decision shall be final without appeal.

The copyright in the submission shall remain with each of the entrants, but in entering the competition, entrants agree that UQ may use submission contents for the purposes of adver-tising, media, publication (including online) or display, or for any other Uni-versity purpose in whole or in part. No liability (including consequential loss) is to be attached to the organisers, sponsors, or their agents.
