Blog EntriesIn a personal blog, you write about your thoughts. You describe what you saw, heard, or felt. A blog sounds like an informal conversation. You can ask your readers to post a response on your blog. You can use expressions like so cool, awesome, hated it, and laugh out loud (lol).

• Work with another group. Share your ideas. Are they the same or different? Which ideas does everyone like best?

Land and Sea TurtlesAll turtles begin their lives on land. Mother turtles lay their eggs in holes and then cover them up to protect the eggs. But after that, the baby turtles’ lives are very different. Depending on the kind of land turtle they are, the baby land turtles crawl away to live in woods, swamps, grasslands, or deserts. In contrast, the baby sea turtles crawl to the ocean to live their lives in the water. Land turtles and sea turtles look different, too. Land turtles have hard, high, round shells. When they are afraid, they hide in their shells. Sea turtles, however, have soft, flatter shells. They can’t hide inside, but they can swim away really fast. When cold weather comes, land turtles dig holes in the ground and sleep all winter. They are too slow to move to warmer places. In contrast, sea turtles simply swim away to find warmer waters.

Read.Read about land turtles and sea turtles. How does the writer show differences? Underline the words and expressions.

18

ParagraphsofContrastIn a paragraph of contrast, you write about the differences between two things. You can use facts and descriptive words to show differences. You can also use words that show contrast, such as but and however, and expressions such as in contrast.

The water you drank today may have fallen from the sky recently,

but it is not new. That water has likely existed for as long as the

earth has. It may be the same water a dinosaur drank millions of

years ago. Or it may be the water that the explorer Marco Polo

sailed on in the 1200s.

The earth has a limited amount of water. The same water keeps

moving around again and again in an endless cycle called the “water

cycle.” It is the cycle water takes as it travels from the land to the sky

and back again to the land. These are the stages of the water cycle.

Facts About the Water Cycle

Evaporation:

Evaporation happens when

the sun heats the water in

rivers, lakes, and oceans and

changes the liquid water into

vapor. This vapor rises up to

the sky.

Condensation:

Condensation happens when

the vapor that rose up to the

sky cools and returns to a

liquid state. The droplets of

water form clouds.

Precipitation:

When enough droplets

combine and they are heavy

enough to fall, they return

to earth as rain, or if they

freeze, snow.

Collection:

This water that falls back

down to earth gets collected

by bodies of water like

oceans, lakes, and rivers.

When it falls on the ground,

it soaks into the earth and

becomes water that plants

and animals drink. Then the

cycle begins again!

But the Jade Emperor heard about the dragons’ rain

making. This made him very angry.

“Those dragons have been making rain without my

permission!” he yelled. “I will find them, wherever they are,

and punish them!”

The emperor called the generals of his army to the palace.

“Catch these four dragons, and bring them to me!” he told

the generals.

The army brought the dragons to the valley below the

palace. Then the Jade Emperor stood on the top of his palace and

waved his arms.

He used his powers to move four giant mountains from

four faraway parts of China. The mountains flew through

the air all the way to the palace.

“I will trap the dragons under these mountains so

that the dragons will never make it rain again!” he said.

And one by one, the mountains fell on the dragons.
