Theater Close-Up continues to bring off-Broadway theater productions to your television set, with two acclaimed plays premiering this month.

Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Buried Child from The New Group—starring Ed Harris, Amy Madigan and Taissa Farmiga—is a poetic and cuttingly funny take on the American family drama, which pulls apart the threadbare deluded visions of our families and our homes.

Jonathan Tolins’ comedy Buyer & Cellar stars Michael Urie in a one-man production that takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride of fame and friendship at the outer reaches of American celebrity, performed and taped at the Westport Country Playhouse.

BRINGING THE THEATER HOME

NYC-ARTS provides arts lovers in the tri-state area and beyond with an all-access pass to the city’s many eclectic cultural offerings. In the process, the weekly show makes a measurable impact on the institutions, artists and patrons of these area treasures.

Co-hosted by New York Emmy Award winners Philippe de Montebello and Paula Zahn, with events around town reported by News Correspondent Christina Ha, the series—now in its eighth season—showcases both world-renowned and local, community-based arts organizations with its weekly broadcast and comprehensive website. This month, viewers can enjoy an extra dose of the award-winning series with its first-ever two-hour special, Celebrating NYC-ARTS. Highlights include a feature segment at The Morgan Library & Museum, where the original manuscript of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is on display. Viewers are also taken inside the American Museum of Natural History for a look at the Origami Holiday Tree – a Big Apple holiday tradition for more than 40 years. “My family and I are longtime supporters of PBS, and we love NYC-ARTS in particular…the short segments are the perfect length to give us a taste of what’s out there,” wrote Jill Ratzan, a THIRTEEN member in New Jersey.

The benefits have proven to be a two-way street, with many featured artists and venues reporting the positive impact of an appearance on NYC-ARTS. New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert said, “Classical music can sometimes fly under the radar of our very busy, digitally-obsessed culture, so getting prominent TV coverage for what we are doing is a very important way to engage a broad audience and invite them to participate in what we are doing.” Young Soon Kim, Artistic Director of Brooklyn-based White Wave dance company, wrote, “Thanks to NYC-ARTS for highlighting the Eternal NOW performance…Besides selling out our opening night, we had a wonderful turnout for Friday and Saturday nights’ performances with standing ovations. From founding father to Broadway icon, Alexander Hamilton is a remarkable figure who still captivates us today.

Treasures of New York: Hamilton’s Albany explores the political genius’ life in upstate New York, from marrying into the wealthy Schuyler family to the feud that fueled the duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. This historical documentary also looks at the society and issues that informed some of his most important decisions. The film visits historic locations such as the Schuyler Mansion —home of Revolutionary War General Philip Schuyler and his family—and The First Church, where Reverend Eliphalet Nott delivered a rousing eulogy that helped turn the tide of public opinion against dueling.

T he image of Queen Victoria seared into popular culture is one of a dour older woman, swathed in black, looking as if she never cracked a smile. So when Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who), a beautiful slip of a woman, portrays her as joyful, it’s jolting. At age 18 —still known as Alexandrina, and playing with dolls—she is awakened one morning and informed she is now queen of England.

Welcome to the world of Victoria, a new Masterpiece miniseries premiering on WLIW. Boasting grand sets, lush countryside, and political intrigue, the lavish series is one of the highlights of this month’s drama line-up. Following Queen Victoria from her accession to the throne in 1837, through her education in politics, courtship, marriage, and epic 63-year reign, Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders, but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge.

The stellar cast includes Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle) as Lord Melbourne, the British prime minister who was Victoria’s father figure and intimate friend; Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) as the handsome Prince Albert, who stole Victoria’s heart; and Alex Jennings (Churchill’s Secret) as Leopold I, King of Belgium, Victoria and Albert’s uncle, who dreamed of a dynasty for his obscure royal line.

Also this month, Benedict Cumberbatch returns as super sleuth Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Season 4 on Masterpiece. In the first of three specials, Holmes is back on British soil, as Watson (Martin Freeman) and his wife, Mary (Amanda Abbington, Mr. Selfridge), prepare for parenthood.

Mercy Street, the acclaimed Civil War drama set in Alexandria, Virginia, returns for a second season. Follow the growing chaos at Mansion House hospital, the precarious position of the Green family, and the changing world of newly freed African Americans. Patina Miller (Pippin) and Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder) are among the new actors and guest stars who join the impressive cast.

Emmy Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated writer, actress, and comedian Monica Piper stars in Not That Jewish, a hilarious and heartfelt autobiographical ride of a Jew-“ish” woman’s life. Reminiscent of Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays with a peppering of Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers, it’s 90 lightning minutes of funny, moving, and inspirational theater. With an additional donation, enjoy a pair of tickets to this new comedy The New York Times calls “delicious” on FEBRUARY 12 OR FEBRUARY 23 AT NEW WORLD STAGES, plus a post-show talk with the playwright/star.
