New film press for B&B
Brigl & Bergmeistermakes major investmentBrigl & Bergmeister is investing
in a new Andritz film press for
its site in Vevče, Slovenia.
On 11 October 2012 Brigl & Berg-
meister commissioned Austrian
company Andritz to build a film
press for the PM5 at Papirnica
Vevče in Vevče (near Ljubljana).
Brigl & Bergmeister – one of the
world‘s leading producers of spe-
cial papers for labels and flexible
packaging – will thus increase an-
nual capacity at the Vevče site by
20,000 tonnes, to 110,000 tonnes
p.a. Moreover, by increasing and
improving the initial coat in the pa-
per machine, it will be possible to
enhance product quality even fur-
ther and offer new, innovative so-
lutions for the packaging industry.
This is Brigl & Bergmeister‘s se-
cond major investment since it
was acquired by paper trading
group Roxcel last year. The first
major investment was its acquisi-
tion of the ENAGES thermal ener-
gy recovery plant, which supplies
power to Brigl & Bergmeister‘s
site in Niklasdorf, Austria.

short infoPackPro 3.5iAt present the trend is to-
wards sustainable pack-
aging materials;
with PackPro 3.5i, there-
fore, B&B stands a good
chance to become a major
player on the market.
News from the innovation pipeline
PackPro 3.5iIt is always possible to improve
things.
This is the story behind our “Pack-
Pro 3.5i” brand as well. The “i”
stands for “improved”.
This paper has a grammage of no
more than 40 g per square metre,
which makes PackPro 3.5 a
champion in the light-weight cate-
gory. This is demonstrated by the
variety of applications it allows, as
required again and again for pa-
ckaging in particular. Whether it is
a matter of PE extrusion laminati-
on, aluminium composites or just
sealing properties for further pro-
cessing, there seem to be almost
no limits.
As the paper comes into direct
contact with foodstuffs as well, all
these requirements are of course
guaranteed. The application focus
is on products such as:
n sugar sticks and sachets
n pharmaceutical packaging
made of composite materials
n innumerable flexpack applica-
tions.
So why »improved«?We have been able to make fur-
ther improvements in terms of
both gloss and smoothness. This
helped us gain access to impor-
tant brand article manufacturers
such as illy or Segafredo.
Wide acceptance on the mar-
kets has already confirmed the
product‘s great potential. By now,
we supply customers in nearly all
large EU countries with this paper
on a regular basis.
B&B launches its »Talking Zone« at Brau Beviale 2012
Let our customers talk!
short info
Facts32,810 trade visitors,
38 % from abroad
1,284 exhibitors from
50 nations
Brigl & Bergmeister presented its
updated label and flexible packa-
ging paper range at this year’s
Brau Beviale in Nuremberg. More
than 1,300 exhibitors and 33,000
visitors were present. Following
the strategic direction of one-
stop-solutions, B&B reinforced its
core values of constant quality,
security of supply and technical
support. All of this can be easily
summed up in two words: custo-
mer proximity.
As a result the traditional B&B
claim „let your labels talk“ was
transferred at the fairground into
„let our customers talk“ – namely
the B&B Talking Zone.
At the booth an interactive wall
allowed customers to voice their
opinion about B&B and its pa-
pers. In addition the full B&B
staff is equipped with state-of-
the-art communication tools to
support interaction with custo-
mers and not detract from the
essence of every exhibition – the
personal conversation. This was
highlighted by the Wednesday
evening „coming together“ at the
B&B Talking Zone.
„We are proud to be at the fore-
front of label and flexpack papers.
This event allows us once more
to show our passion for paper in
a modern setting. Allowing ideas
to float between customers and
B&B staff is vital to any business.
Our Talking Zone at the Brau
Beviale sets the perfect stage to
foster such creative interaction“,
says Michael Sablatnig, MD of the
Brigl & Bergmeister Group.

Labels keep getting better at communicationAs far as label quality is concer-
ned, technical parameters such
as smoothness, gloss and whi-
teness have long ceased to be
the only things that count. The
stories told by labels become
tangible by what they show and
how they feel. The label materi-
al becomes part of the message
and strengthens or emphasises
the brand and the design. Wine-
growing areas are brought to life,
the landscape where the product
is grown can be perceived, as
can be the smell of the region, a
composition of fish, vegetables or
fruit. A salt-breeze with a sailing
ship displayed, a variety of ginger-
bread with strong holiday beers,
or Asian vitality combined with
wonderfully hoppy lager beers.
Label designers manage to trigger
these expectations within an area
of just a few square centimetres,
and technical implementation is
so impressive because there is
no weak spot that might distract
the beholder‘s attention from the
labels‘ message.
Entries for the 8th Golden La-
bel Award come from more
than 20 countries. Despite the
expected large number of fi-
nalists from German-speaking
countries, entries from Portu-
gal, Spain, France, the Nether-
lands, Romania and even from
India have made it through to
the final.
This makes the competition toug-
her and an even more internatio-
nal event.
short infoIn total 297 Labels have
been submitted for the Gol-
den Label Award.
Out of them the jury nomi-
nated 20 labels in the cate-

There is actually a “fan communi-
ty” for labels.
During the 4-week period speci-
fied, everyone who has an email
address could cast their vote
once a day for their favourite la-
bel. More than 3,000 votes were
cast for the winning label.
There were, however, many com-
peting labels that also received
thousands of votes from their
fans.
Yet only one label in this category
can win the Golden Label Award.

Training seminars on the subject of label paper
The 10th B&B Label AcademySince 2007, we have offered
our customers 1 or 2 intensive
training seminars a year on the
subject of label paper.
These training seminars are boo-
ked mainly by large brewing and/
or food enterprises which want
to give their staff working in the
production facilities in various
countries an opportunity to learn
more about the technologically
complex interaction of “labels and
labelling”.
These seminars deal with techni-
cal parameters in particular – from
paper manufacturing and printing
processes through to various la-
belling methods and the removal
of labels from returned bottles
using lye. The theoretical presen-
tations are backed by detailed
practical demonstrations at our
laboratories.
Besides technical requirements,
environmental issues keep being
discussed extensively. In big mul-
ticorporate enterprises in particu-
lar, this issue is given top priority;
it is therefore obvious that we,
too, address this subject. As in
the past, we also offer a visit to
our pulp supplier, Zellstoff Pöls
AG. From the onset, we at B&B
have been actively involved in the
environmental debate, and in this
area are also a pioneer in terms of
energy-conscious production and
environment-friendly products.
Evidence of our above-average
performance has been provided
by specific studies.
Due to bad examples occurring
in other parts of the world, wood
processing and pulp production
are to some extent still viewed
sceptically; it is therefore all the
more important to us to show that
all the raw materials we use are
guaranteed to come from sustai-
nable sources. For our seminar
attendants, a visit to the pulp fac-
Planting trees with ABInBev
Our most recent training seminar
was organised for ABInBev. For
the first time, attendants were pro-
vided – directly on site – not only
with information on pulp produc-
tion but also on forest manage-
ment. The Association of Styrian
Forest Owners (Steirischer Wald-
verband), which is accountable
for sustainable forests in the regi-
on, reported in great detail on the
stringent and environmentally re-
asonable requirements applicable
to Austrian forests. Of course, all
other European countries set very
clear rules regarding balanced en-
vironmental assessments as well.
In Austria, for instance, 15% more
trees are reforested than har-
vested. Unfortunately, damage
is also caused by storms – the
areas affected are then carefully
cleared and new trees planted. In
a forest area like this, we and our
seminar attendants were allowed,
instructed by an expert, to plant
the first new trees.
The attendants carried out this
sustainable open-air initiative en-
thusiastically and very success-
fully, apparently enjoying a little
exercise after 2 days of theoreti-
cal training. Even the rain could
not stop them. The trees planted
tory is always very informative and
a rewarding experience.

Incidentally, our seminar atten-
dants have expressed the wish to
come back and visit their trees, a
request we will be pleased to ac-
commodate. However, it will pro-
bably be their grandchildren who
will do the harvesting, which will
be possible in 60 years at the ear-

minimum age for being cut down.

»Learning beyond
professional bor-
ders« that is the idea
behind the Tandem
Academy launched
by B&B and organi-
sed for the first time
in July 2012.
B&B + printers +
branded compa-
nies = a perfect
team
Today‘s customers want to be
swept away. For this to happen it
is necessary that all members of
the supply chain, from the manuf-
acturer of raw materials through
to the finished product, contribute
their respective know-how in the
best possible way.
At the recently established Tan-
dem Academy, organised in col-
laboration with Villacher Brewery,
the Marzek Printing House and
the label-paper manufacturer
Brigl & Bergmeister, participants
discussed what perfect collabora-
tion should be like, and how costs
and quality can be optimised
through an improved understan-
ding beyond the limits of one‘s
own processes. The participants’
feedback on this event was highly
positive.
A similar event with other custo-
mers is already being planned.
