Pre- Productions

Storyline

Fantasy fiction The character goes to the library to find a book. Whilst looking she comes across an old large book, quiet dusty. Taking the book of the shelf dusts off the dust and opens the book. One the page she opens a gothic dark castle forms, either folds out of emerges from melted substance. The castle is not that tall on the page but bigger that the book. Mountains build up and make the scene for the castle. Water runs off the mountains on to bottom of the mountain that the castle is on and off the book edge. The door of the castle slides down and three trolls stumble out one with a troll weapon, wooden handle and spikes on the club. One that is quiet funny looking that scratches his head and the final one looks about and looks up at character.

Clouds form and the moon emerge. Moonlight scene and lighting. The character lifts book up to eye leave and turns book around to get good look at castle and trolls, the trolls shake to the movement. Character pokes troll with weapon which then uses its weapon and pricks characters finger.

I like to have interaction with the pop up story book like the finger pricking but if I had time I would like to have the clouds move when the character waves over them, or they disappear. Also having the water running off the page is another interaction but if character was to drop something in water to make a ripple effect. (when it comes to moving the book around in this scene the water might but only falling off side when is moved rather than spilling off edge of the book)

Effects Breakdowns

3D Max Gothic Castle

This is the main scene. I have to create a gothic castle with spires and towers and make it look realistic as possible. I will start with getting research images of similar interest castle and create my designs and then create it in max. I will try and keep it low polygon so that it doesn’t take a long time to animate. The textures on the castle will me the most important and what will make it more realistic so the modelling will be simple.

Animating the castle Using the melt modifier to build the castle from the rocky mountain:

Mountains, Water and Trees backgrounds

The scene will have mountains and trees and water at the bottom of the mountains. For the mountains using triangles and small vertex bumps, main area will be in the texturing of the mountains.

The water/sea will be at the base of the mountains and will hopefully use a plane and in aftereffects have the water moving slightly. However for starting point will use a image but will make it reflective so the shadow of the castle and moon light will hopefully reflect off it.

Trolls

Researching trolls that I like and that are simple. Three trolls similar but still different one with a weapon. The troll will be very simple 3d max characters as I don’t have a lot of time or rendering time. They will also be low polygon and the same character but different faces and colour of skin. This scene is where the troll with the weapon stabs/ pricks the character with his weapon. I want it to be simple movement and defiantly not too much if possible won’t move the arm too high as then will come into some defiantly problems with the skinning.

3d Camera Tracking Rotation of book

Using 3d max and matchmaker to have scene link to the book when rotating it. Also the camera will rotate around the castle to see the back of the castle and mountains. Images of using matchmaker for tracking, using post it note as tracking point:

3D compositing with video Finger pricking

The character presses her finger up on the troll, poking it and the troll interacts but pricking her finger with its weapon. For this scene it would consist of the footage of the troll pricking the air and the character poking the character. It also entails the footage of the finger bleeding in the spot where the weapon would hit it. So it would be a trick of over lay once the finger is hit by the troll the footage of the bleeding finger will take its place. This may be tricky but I think it is the way I think it could work.

I would have to have the two finger positions in the exact same place so that there is no difference in the swap over.

Green Screening Bleeding finger

In this effect it means using the footage that was taking for the finger going to poke the character and doing it the exact same way but after a few seconds have the finger bleeding. This would allow me to overlay the footage to look like after the finger is hit it starts to bleed due to the weapon. I would use my green screen so I can overlay it into the scene and then use colour correction to make it realistic to the lighting and shadows in the film.

Water over edge of book

Take footage of water flowing over a bucket or an object with flat corner to it so I can then cut this out and add to scene were the water flows over the edge of the book. I think I will use a green book, of make all surrounding are green, so that I can take out all the background and set it into the screen. Colour correction needs to be done for this and good green screening, as it may be hard to not have the water disappear.

Project Planning

Review the project

• The objective for this project is to create a short film using the techniques learned in the last semester.

• The scope for the project is that it has to be as close to professional quality as possible but it also has to be short. It has to include the techniques we have learned in the previous semester and use them to create a short film. For the project to be a success there has to be a film report, including:

• Storyboard • Key effects breakdowns • Project Plan • Shot list, script

• The constraints of the project are that it has to be between 3-10 minutes long but has to be professional. There should be title sequences and music and the effects breakdowns should be a page per effect.

• The deliverables for the project are: • The final film should be HDTV ready (1920x1080) or for standard HD

(1280x720). Presented on CD- Rom/DVD Rom or memory stick • Use the H.264 code with 80% quality • Upload a copy online to Vimeo or You Tube account

• To make the project a success I will have to create a short professional film 3-1o minutes long, with the use of the techniques I learnt last semester. I also will have to create storyboards and key effects breakdowns of how I did each effect and made it work and show my process in creating it. These would be min of one page per effect.

• For my filming I will have to colour correct the whole film so that it looks continuously the same throughout the film. This is especially important when moving from scene to scene and compositing two separate images or film.

• Any still images I will take will be bmp, targa or tiff as they are a better format then jpeg or gif.

• A project plan will also have to be written up for my film report which includes the storyboards and effects breakdown and shot lists and scripts.

• Sketch books including sketches of characters/ models in the film. I may have to scan each sketch into the computer and add into film report just in case there are no sketch books to be handed in.

• For presenting the project it has to be the size of full HD or standard HD and use the H.264 and to upload the final film on to my Vimeo account.

Define what needs done

Through looking through the WBS and asset list I can now tell what needs to be done. I can divide these up onto certain people and what they should do but as it is my project I can’t get anyone to do the work because I know specifically what to do a most of it is on 3d max.

Sequentialise With Dependencies

There are no time restrictions at this time. But if was to include the library in Armagh as the opening scene then the times for when it is open is 10am – 4pm, Monday to Friday and they are closed for lunch from 1pm to 2pm.

There are not really any dependencies unless was to contain the walking of the trolls outside to see how far they go until we can film the footage as to where to poke the character. I also have to create the castle before I can create any of the other objects in the scene. But there are a lot of things that can happen before another such as creating all the 3d max work first and then can do the footage. In the story there are two activities that can be filmed at same time such as the footage for scene one and the footage with all the bits that include looking at the book, I may be able to do the green screening at the same time as I can then have all the actual filming footage done.

Define Resource List

What will I need to make the footage tasks happen? What are my restrictions? Who do I need to make this task happen? Where do I need to get to and how?

To make footage tasks happen I need my camera, tripod, actor, storyboards, shot list, charged battery, spare memory cards, library an old big book.

The restrictions for this task are finding a library that looks good. Finding a large book to fit into my story. There may only be a certain amount of time I can film, or even none.

I only need myself and one other person to achieve this task. I have to get to the Armagh library and I will drive as I have to take my equipment.

For the 3d mask task what I will need to make these happen is my laptop, 3d max software, sketches and research images. The restrictions would be the amount of detail I can model my characters into as I do not have a lot of time, and the speed of my laptop. I only need myself to complete this task. For camera tracking however I would need a post it note to help with matchmaker and camera.

Green screening to create these tasks I will need a green screen, green screen stand, good light, possibly natural light, character wearing no green, camera, tripod. The restriction would be very limited, hardly any in this task as the green screening is quite simple. I need myself and someone to use the camera.

Estimate Time per Task

I do not have to learn anything new to make these tasks happen. To finalise a task such as the footage each sub task will possibly take bot 30 seconds each to film. However for 3d task the sub tasks take much longer than any other tasks in my story such as the creating, texturing and animating the castle, and trolls would take about 6 hours each and I’m not sure yet how long it will take to animate it. The camera tracking is ok to it has to just have two footages and to know exactly where the object is going. Finally the green screening and the sub tasks are simple and the time spent on each would be about 10 minutes as have to set up the screen and make sure everything is right.
