After your guests admire your wedding dress, the next thing they’ll notice isthe beautiful bouquet of flowers you’re holding as you walk down the aisle.
Rebecca Cox, owner of Rebecca’s Flowers in Isanti, has over 20 years of floral designer experience, and has owned her own business in Isanti for 10 years.
Rebecca’s Flowers offers high-quality fresh flowers, unique designs, wonderful decorating ideas, and uncompro-mising service. Based on her years of experience, Cox can share some advice when selecting a wedding florist.
Cox said the best time to contact a florist is after the color of the bridesmaid dresses has been selected, and the bride needs to select a florist she’s comfortable with.
“A bride needs to work with a florist who understands her hopes and desires right away,” Cox said. “A good florist should understand intuitively who the bride is as a person and be able to offer her useful suggestions and ideas after just a few minutes with her.”
Cox said a good florist should be there to listen, or offer advice and suggestions if needed.
“About half of the brides I work with already know what they are looking for by seeing pictures in wedding maga-zines or on websites,” Cox said. “However, the other half of brides still come in without knowing too much, so I will get a feel for their personality and color schemes they like. We will start using different flowers and colors from my cooler
and create a variety of options for her to consider.”A bride’s florist should make her feel special.“A bride needs to feel the florist is paying attention to her
and listening to her needs,” Cox said. “A good florist will not try to talk the bride out of something she desires. I love new challenges and new ideas. A bride needs to feel like she’s being taken care of by her florist.”
A good florist is accommodating to any situation.“Often times, the brides I work with are in college and
can’t get back to Isanti that often,” Cox said. “I do a lot of emailing back and forth with brides on their orders and give quotes via mail based on what the bride has submitted to me. You have to remain flexible in our business.”
Cox also wants to remind brides that fresh flower ar-rangements and silk flower arrangements cost around the same price. She also noted that flowers can be in-corporated into almost any aspect of the wed-ding.
“You can put flowers on basically anything,” Cox said. “I’ve done a lot of unique things with flowers and have used some creative problem

solving. I really try to accommodate any need to take the ease off the wedding day.”
Cox’s average wedding order is between $500 to $1,500, with September and October being the busiest months for weddings.
She has also noticed that couples are having shorter en-gagements, and recommends having the floral order final-ized one month prior to the wedding date.
“Every wedding I do is different, as I customize my piec-es for each individual wedding,” Cox said. “I can also work within any budget. I will work with brides on just the small-est needs. I don’t have a minimum order charge.”
As an experienced wedding floral designer, Cox can per-sonally help the bride through the many aspects involved in choosing the perfect flowers for their special day.
“Every bouquet I’ve done has been so different from the next,” Cox said. “The bouquets always involve a new combi-nation and every one is individualized. I work with the most
beautiful products in the world and I always love seeing the end result. Other than her dress, a bride’s flowers sets her apart, and it’s a very personal project to be a part of.”
Cox mostly does weddings within one to two hours of the Twin Cities area, and has done weddings in many dif-ferent settings from farms, to Lake Mille Lacs, to a Jewish wedding at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Minneapo-lis to the Landmark Center in St. Paul.
“About half of the wed-dings I do are still in churches, but couples are also getting more creative with their wed-ding locations,” Cox said. “I’m also seeing more ceremonies and receptions held together in the same location.”
As far as weddings, Rebec-ca’s Flowers offers: bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres, centerpieces, hair pieces, al-tar pieces, candles, vase ar-rangements, silk floral design, pew bows and flower flour-ishes, wedding cake floral design, wedding decor rentals and floral delivery and venue placement.
The store also carries many items such as gifts and cards, baby gifts, gourmet truffles, fragrances and lotions, home and holiday decor, select apparel and jewelry and plants.
Rebecca’s Flowers is located at 11 Elizabeth Street in Isanti and can be reached at 763-444-5574. More information can be found at www.rebeccasflowers.com. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

A couple’s wedding day is sup-posed to be a time of bliss, filled with love, friends, family
and memories. It’s not a time to be worrying
about last-second changes, problems with food or alcohol, or the price the couple or their family paid to orga-nize the wedding.
Joni Monk, event coordinator at Spectacular Events Banquet Center in Isanti, a venue often used for wed-ding receptions and ceremonies, said having a good event coordinator or wedding planner to lean on before and during the big day can be a real asset.
Monk has been working with brides, grooms and their families since 2005.
She plans many weddings at Spec-tacular Events, but also does some freelance wedding coordination.
“I get paid to throw parties,” she said. “It’s great.”
Getting couples what they wantMonk said the most important
part of a couple’s wedding day is to “get what you want.”
True, many couples can and do organize weddings themselves or with the help of family members, but Monk said having someone separate from friends and family take the lead can lessen the stress on what can be a very hectic day.
“It’s not that difficult to put to-gether a wedding, but if you’ve never done it before, it’s all new,” she said. “I can take my expertise, calm them down, and tell them, ‘I can take care of that.”’
But she said she’s careful not to “take over” the planning of the day.
“My advice to brides looking at any venue is this: that coordinator is there to make sure you get what
you want,” she said. “Make sure they work for you.”
Coordinators can help manage stress on the big day

Weddings on a budgetMonk noted most couples she works with have a wedding
price in mind. However, some come to her, often with their parents, with a
list of things they want included.“If parents are here with the bride and groom and they get
to the bottom of the list and see the price, you hear the audible ‘gulp,”’ Monk said. “But when I hear that, I say, ‘Here’s where you can cut, here’s where you could make a difference.”’
She added having someone coordinate or plan a wedding might seem like an extra ex-pense to couples, but often times planners have the expertise to show couples where they could cut, while still keeping their weddings “fabulous.”
Monk also noted cou-ples on very tight bud-gets should think about
Friday or Sunday weddings. Those days are generally cheaper at most venues, as are
weekdays.
Having connectionsIn addition to having years of wedding planning expertise,
Monk said most wedding planners and coordinators have con-nections in their respective areas with others involved in the wedding business.
She said she knows good florists in the east central Min-nesota area, she could help a couple find a band or DJ, and she works with a pastor and a judge who perform marriage ceremonies.
“They’re our clients; we want to make them happy,” Monk said. “If there’s something we can do for them, we sure will.”

Words are an important part of any wedding ceremony, but these days, it’s the person who is expressing
them that seems to be held in higher regard than ever before. In other words, couples are turning to special friends and loved ones to perform one of the most important events of their lives.
Bonnie Carlson, of Rush City, got her start at a local nursing home where she cared for her grandmother several years ago. A full-time realtor with three children at home, she felt for all the senior residents there and be-gan to minister to them.
“I started ministering to them because they were not having their spiritual, emo-tional and social needs met,” she said of those who welcomed her. “I enjoyed sitting with them. I would say, ‘Tell me about your life, your grandchildren. I generally have an interest in people, and I don’t know why. I think that’s the gift God has given me — to help the broken hearted.”
Little did she realize, Carlson was about to get more involved in her ministry to oth-ers after a talk with a man associated with the chaplaincy program at Home and Away Ministries in Pine City. She was told she had the skills, so she pursued the credential part
and became an ordained, or certified, chap-lain in the state of Minnesota through Chap-lains in Service to the Nation.
Her future in performing weddings was just a matter of time.
“My mission was to minister to the el-derly, but I thought (the idea of performing weddings) was neat… Why limit myself?” she discovered.
It was her oldest son, Luke, who informed Carlson of a couple wanting her to perform a non-traditional wedding ceremony for them. A bit nervous, she prayed to God, “Help me figure this out,” started doing some research on the Internet and asked the couple what they wanted in their service.
“I wanted to communicate God’s true de-sire for man and wife in marriage and how wonderful it is,” she explained.
Carlson will tell you she’s not perfect, but in the end she performed a fine non-tradi-tional wedding. And she fell in love with it.
“It’s such an honor and a blessing to be-lieve my God has called me to do this,” she noted. “I love to share God’s message and his idea of what a marriage should be. It’s about being the right partner; it’s about pa-tience, kindness, love and a partner to share
for an extra special weddingJon Tatting | ECM Post Review
“We are to accept our partners for all that they are, embracing each other in times of delight and success, in the fullness of dreams, in moments of sorrow and during hardships. This is both God’s blessing and charge to you: to live together with courage and honor in whatever unfolding mystery your journey together will bring. Are you prepared to begin this journey together?”

your life with. What a joy that is. You’re never too old to hold hands, to say ‘I love you,’ or forgive.”
Carlson also admits that she enjoys being in the limelight and speaking in front of large audiences. Since 2010, she has performed seven weddings in both traditional and non-tra-ditional settings. And word of mouth travels fast.
On another occasion, a friend was in a pinch in Rush City. She was about to get married in front of 250 people, but the
minister was not able to make it. Carlson, meanwhile, was four hours away on a camping
excursion when she got the call.“I went over everything, retyped everything when I got
home and did everything in four hours,” she remembered. “Here I was in full (ceremonial garb), and my knees were shaking.”
Yet all went well, except for the part where she intro-duced the groom by the wrong name. “I was horrified that I screwed up,” she said. “But the father of the groom said, ‘Bonnie, that was great.’ Instead of criticizing me, he praised me for making it a memorable, humorous moment. So the message here is mistakes can be OK.”
Another memorable wedding brought Carlson back to Colorado, where her family once lived. The bride was a friend’s daughter who used to have her diapers changed by Carlson.
“As children, she (the bride) played with my three boys who used to take off her Barbie doll heads and throw them like grenades,” she smiled. “She was marrying a military man who was to be deployed. He was in full uniform, which was close to my heart because of Houston (her middle son) at West Point.”
And due to the groom’s scheduled deployment, timing was an issue.
“So my husband Tony and I flew to Colorado,” she said. “And because it was my friends and a rushed wedding, I was the chaplain, decorator, ceremony organizer, and I even did the hair and make-up for the mother of the bride and the flower girls.”
In reflection of that day, “It was so rewarding to be able to help them put this whole production together,” she noted.
In her experiences as wedding chaplain, Carlson has asked couples if they would like to do a “Covenent of Salt” or “Love Letter and Wine Box” ceremony. Allow her to explain the latter, as stated at a wedding she performed:
“This box contains a bottle of wine, two glasses and a love letter from each to the other. The letters describe the good qualities you find in one another, the reasons you fell in love and your reasons for choosing to marry. They have also asked the parents and each member of the wedding party to write a letter of advice and well wishes.
“The letters are sealed in individual envelopes, and you have not seen what each other has written. You have created your very own ‘romantic’ time capsule to be opened on your fifth wedding anniversary. I recommend that you keep the box in a place of honor prominently displayed in your home as a constant reminder of your commitment to one another.”
Carlson said she presents these options to make the cer-emony more meaningful.
“I want it to be an enjoyable event, not trite or boring,” she explained. “If people say that it’s the most loving wed-ding ceremony they’ve ever been to, that tells me I accom-plished my mission. This is my service to God’s people. Get-ting married is one of the top two events in people’s lives. And to be a part of that is amazing.”
While Carlson went through a chaplaincy program, an-other option in becoming ordained is through groups such as the Universal Life Church Monastery, which promotes freedom of religion and enters applications for ordination into the International Database of the Ministry of the Church. Members, who apply online and receive their credentials by mail, can perform marriages, funerals and baptisms, while they can even start their own church — whether it be brick and mortar or online.
For those thinking about pursuing this experience, Carl-son offers some advice.
“Life is an adventure. If it’s something that burns in your heart to do, go for it,” she suggested. “It’s something to add to a list of your accomplishments. It does take work to put it all together, and I take it seriously. I want people to know that I’m giving my best shot with this thing called marriage.”
ORdainEd from page 6
Another request to perform a wedding brought Bonnie Carlson back to Colorado where she and her family once lived. She wore many hats that day in November 2012, but it was her role as chaplain that made everything extra special for the bride and groom, Kelsey and Will Weir, in Colorado Springs. Will, dressed in full military uniform, was to be deployed overseas shortly after the ceremony. Photo by Terry Jinings

For couples looking to reduce some stress on the big day, Spectacular Events Banquet Center offers the luxury of a one-stop shop venue.
One benefit of using the center in Isanti for a wedding reception is that they offer full service, including all the set up, serving and cleanup.
“They literally drop in, have their day and they’re done. They don’t have to work to have a wedding,” said Joni Monk, the center’s event coordinator. “We aim to please and we’re kind of at their beck and call.”
Spectacular Events can seat up to 400 people, making it one of the largest indoor venues in the area. The building also has a restaurant and a great hall, which can comfortably fit smaller groups of people.
“We’re one of the nicer facilities around, and we’re also big,” Monk said. “There are nice facilities around, but we’re the only one that can fit a large quantity of people.”
And the couple can choose to hold the ceremony as well as the reception at Spectacular Events if they choose, so guests don’t have to move to another location after the ceremony. The venue features a 900 square foot dance floor and an outdoor patio with a pavilion.
“It can be however they want to design it,” Monk said. “People have said we’re easy to work with and we don’t charge for every little thing.”
The couple uses the catering and bar service at their event, and Spectacu-lar Events provides all the tables, chairs, linens, glassware, flatware, china, servers and bartenders. The couple can bring a cake, but Monk said they have a baker on staff who can make wedding cakes.

Couples can create a unique, customized wedding with the many options available at Isanti Rental.
Isanti Rental is a locally-owned, indepen-dent equipment and party rental company offering a wide selection of tents, party and special event supplies.
The family business has been in Isanti since 1993, said Owner Tracy Neifert. Be-fore they opened the store, her father had been renting tents out of his house since the 1980s.
“We’ve been doing it long enough where we know what they need or what’s available to them,” Neifert said.
Couples can rent various tent sizes that can seat anywhere from 40 to 500 people, and delivery and setup are included with the larger tents.
The tents have gutters, so guests are pro-tected from the rain.
They also rent out tables, chairs, dance floor, archways, candelabras, lighting, lin-ens, portable toilets and sinks and much more, with delivery and pickup services available. And Neifert said they’re always adding more.
“If you haven’t seen it before, it doesn’t mean it will never be here,” Neifert said. “We’re always looking at new stuff.”
Whatever a couples’ needs for their wed-ding day, Neifert is sure Isanti Rental can help.
“I’m not a salesman,” Neifert said. “I don’t want to sell or rent people something they don’t need. I’m here to provide information and let them know their options.”
Isanti Rental is located at 421 West Dual Boulevard. For more information, visit www.isantirental.com or call 763-444-7368.
