The blendBy GateHouse News Service

Saying “yes” once the ques-tion is popped is the easy part. But just because you andyours have agreed to spendthe rest of your lives togetherdoesn’t mean your familieswill blend in perfect harmony.

The combination of differ-ent cultures or religions canbe tricky ground during wed-ding planning, so take time toensure that everyone’s beliefsare involved and honored.Read on for expert tips forweaving what’s important toeveryone into your special day.

Get togetherAt first attempt, the blending

of cultures at a wedding can seema daunting task. Not all parentsor grandparents are initiallypleased when a child or grand-child chooses to marry outside oftheir culture or religion.

“I think that multiculturalcouples face a couple of chal-lenges — the first is to gain un-derstanding and acceptance fromtheir families,” says SusanSoutherland, president of JustMarry! Inc., national expert forPerfectWedding Guide andA-ListPlanner for DestinationWeddings& Honeymoons magazine. “It's

critical that the bride and groomget their families together earlyso that they have a chance to getto know each other and accepteach other prior to the weddingweekend.”

Celebrate together with yourfamilies early and often to de-velop relationships that breakthrough cultural barriers.

Don’t shy awayOnce everyone is on board and

excited about the upcoming nup-tials, don’t avoid the subject ofhow and when it makes sense toimplement cultural or religiouselements into the big day.

“It is important to keep an

open dialogue about any concernsthat their families might have,”says Southerland, who is based inOrlando, Fla., and plans eventsnationwide. “It’s easy and fun toincorporate family traditions. Infact, discussing which elements toincorporate into the wedding maybreak the ice between the twofamilies.”

Be creativeSoutherland has assisted

clients from diverse backgroundsin putting together a seamless in-tegration of cultures, no matterhow different.

“One of my favorite multicul-tural weddings included a bride

who was Vietnamese and a groomwho was Irish,” says Southerland, who goes on to describe a cere-mony with parasol-carryingbridesmaids, a bamboo-linedaisle, a flower girl who tossedfour-leaf clovers and a handfast-ing ceremony that followed thevows.

“The cocktail hour includedshooters of potato leek soup, minicorned beef and cabbage sand-wiches and lycée martinis. Dinnerincluded the bride’s mother’srecipe for nuoc mam and a stir-frystation.”

EnjoyThere’s nothing like the feeling

of pulling off a wedding truly yourown, and representing of each ofyour cultures ensures that willhappen.

“When the couple works to-gether with their families to in-corporate family traditions, itresults in a wedding that truly re-flects their history and the blend-ing of the two families,” saysSoutherland. “It's those specialtouches, above all, that maketheir wedding unique.”

So, dig in and do the work re-quired to make sure both of yourcultures or religions are cele-brated during your affair. Theoutcome will be nothing less thanperfect.Arrange your own catering

when planning your receptionfor that special day.

Jewishweddingtradition

Couples of the Jewishfaith often spend their wed-ding ceremony underneath a"chuppah." This is a canopyor covering made from acloth or sheet stretched overfour poles. The chuppahmay be freestanding, or itmay be held aloft by mem-bers of the wedding party.According to tradition, thechuppah symbolizes thehome the couple will buildtogether.

Although a chuppah isn'ta required component of theceremony and couples willbe recognized as marriedwithout it, in more casesthan not, a chuppah is an in-tegral part of the ceremony.

THE SECOND DRESSWhy stop at one wedding dress?Changing into a second dress forcake-cutting is nothing new. In2012, brides will take it a step fur-ther with “white weddings.”Theywill be wearing white to theirbridal showers, rehearsal dinnersand other events. The dresses“can be short, sexy, long, fun orfeathered, but they don’t have tobe expensive,”Maddox said. Andthey can be worn again. David’sBridal recently introduced the DBStudio Collection filled withdresses that fit the bill for thatspecial day and beyond.

HINTS OF COLORFor several years, color has madea splash down the bridal aisle, and it’s “a look for everyone,”Maddox said.White or ivory wed-ding dresses can seem plain andboring when the same gorgeousdresses are available in blush, lavender, cream or platinum blue.It can be the hard-to-keep-in-stock, watercolor blue, printedVeraWang or the mermaid laceOleg Cassini with 3-D flowers insplashes of pink. Color is big in2012.

TEXTUREWhether it’s extreme beading, elaborate embroidery, daringfabric choices or ruffles, 2012wedding dresses are “all aboutfabric, movement and volume,”said Maddox. Satin and silk aretimeless, but today’s brideswant something more. Maybeorganza and chiffon? Howabout “lace, tulle and horse-hair all in one dress,” Maddoxsaid.

BACK INTERESTLooking great as you’re walk-ing away is one of the newesttrends, Maddox said. That canmean plunging backlines, ex-travagant embellishments, trains that dive from the neck-

line down to spread across thefloor, or sexy illusion backswith striking details or demurelace.

2-TIERED DRESSESWedding dresses with two dis-

tinct tiers are a modern lookwith a good reason for catch-ing on. It’s a figure-flatteringstyle for the ladies with a littleextra at the hip. A peplumpaired with a longer layer addsup to a fun and flirty fusion offashion.

THE SECRETWEAPON“You don’t have to have agreat body to look hourglassand shapely,” Maddox said.A side-ruched dress flattersalmost any body type and as-sures that the bride can glideinto the room with confi-dence.

THE KATE EFFECTThe most bride-friendly neck-line — the sweetheart strap-less — is now overshadowed

by illusion or altered neck-lines, which were made popu-lar by Kate Middleton and herfabulous new-twist-on-tradi-tional lace wedding dress.“The trend is to be more cov-ered. You can look cool andclassic with more coverage.Kate made not going strap-less cool again,” said Maddox. Illusion necklines featuresheer fabrics over a section ofskin that would otherwise bebared and are often high-lighted with delicate detailssuch as beading, jewels orlace.

What’s new for 2012 brides? Something unique

Whether a size 2 or a size 20, brides are ready to experiment with their wedding dress-es, stepping away from the traditional gown and choosing to bedeck themselves insomething a little different for the walk down the aisle. “The key word in 2012 is‘unique,’” said Catalina Maddox, fashion director for David’s Bridal. “There are sever-al key trends that we’re excited about.” Here they are:

What’s in a name? There’s a lot toconsider inmarital namechangesBY KAREN CAFFARINIGATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

For some new brides, saying“I do” to their groom is aneasy decision, but taking hislast name is not. Usually, emotional issues come intoplay, but experts and those

who have kept their ownname, or use both lastnames, say there are practi-cal and legal issues to con-sider, as well.

PROSOne of thebest aspects

of keeping your last name isyou don’t have to do any-thing. There’s no need to gothrough the process of chang-ing your driver’s license, So-cial Security card, passportand other legal documents, says SusanMoss, a partner atChemtobMoss Forman &Talbert LLP, a matrimonial

law firm in New York City.It also is more desirable for

work-related recognition, said Kathryn E. Nelson, aformerWashington, D.C.,resident who lives in Manila,Philippines, and who kepther maiden name.“Authoring papers under

two different names wouldmake online listings/searchesa bit more problematic,” shesaid.

CONSBut difficul-ties can

arise, especially when kidscome into the picture. Moss

and Nelson say traveling byplane can be difficult ifMom and children have dif-ferent last names. Mosssaid airlines need proof youare the children’s parent.“It started about 10 years

ago with more examples ofchild abduction,” she said.Moss said to bring a copy

of the children’s birth cer-tificates with both their andyour names on it and someother form of identification.Nelson said she brings acopy of her marriage cer-tificate and her children’sbirth certificates.

Also, different last namescan cause mix-ups at schooland make enrollment con-fusing, Nelson said. You’ll need to provide

proof of marriage or an“alias sheet” with your oth-er name in order to get thebenefit of your state’s mari-tal laws regarding commu-nity property with yourhusband, said Tina B.Tessina, psychotherapistand author of “Money, Sexand Kids: Stop Fightingabout the Three ThingsThat Can Ruin Your Mar-riage.”And you could receive

checks in your marriedname from relatives or in-vestments, necessitatingyour opening a bank ac-count in that name, too, said Danielle Tate, founderand president ofwww.MissNowMrs.com, aname-change service forbrides.Even more confusion aris-

es when a woman uses bothlast names, either by usingone as a middle name or byhyphenating the two. Tatesaid people will use one orthe other name.Kathy Doyle Thomas of

Dallas encounters thatproblem when checkinginto hotels.“I once missed an impor-

tant call from my husbandbecause they could not findme under Thomas. Theyhad me under Doyle,” shesaid. Finally, check with your

state to see if your namechange request is even le-gal. Tate said there are fivestates where women cannottake their maiden name astheir middle name: Ohio,Washington, New Jersey,California and Pennsylvania.

HandmadeweddinginvitationsMetro Creative Connection

To create a personalizedinvitation, many couplesare opting to go the do-it-yourself route. DIY invita-tions are even morecommon thanks to the pop-ularity of scrapbooking andpapercrafting.

Although people mayhave different standards interms of quality for their in-vitations, it's important torealize the invitation is thefirst thing guests often seeconcerning the wedding, and they will help set thetone of the upcoming nup-tials.

Today there are many op-tions when it comes to mak-ing invitations oneself.

Couples can be as hands-on or hands-off as they like. Here are some choices toconsider.

• Design it yourself,but hire a printer.

Couples can visit Websites that enable them tochoose paper type, ink color,a certain template, wording, color scheme, embellish-ments, dye-cutting, andmany other different op-tions.

Then the couple sits backand waits for the invites tocome in the mail where theyare put together beforebeing sent out.

These may be the mostexpensive of the DIY invitesbecause a printer is stilldoing much of the work.

• Use wedding invita-tion kits. Many stationeryshops, craft stores and officesupply retailers offer all-in-one kits that can be pur-chased.

These feature a standarddesign with the accou-trements of that particulardesign.

Most will come with en-velopes and small responsecards. The couple simplyuses the template providedto create text on a personalcomputer and then the in-vite can be run through ahome printer.

• Mix and match com-ponents.

Couples who want to be alittle more hands-on can

purchase card stock and en-velopes separately and de-sign their own invitationsaccording to color scheme.

Clip art included withsome word processing or de-sign software can embellishinvites that are then

printed on a home printer.Ribbon can be added bypunching holes into the in-vite and threading the rib-

bon through.

• Do it all yourself. The truly crafty couple

can make their invitationsfrom scratch.

This involves drawingout a template, cutting thecard stock to fit, selectingenvelopes, creating and ex-ecuting response cards, anddecorating the invitationsas they see fit. This will re-quire some tools, includingscrapbooking or papercraft-ing supplies.

A paper trimmer willhelp ensure straight cuts, and decorative-edged scis-sors can help hide anysmall mistakes in theedges.

While this may be acheaper option if couplesget good prices on all thepaper components, it alsoentails the most work andthe greatest margin oferror.

Do-it-yourself bridalBY CAROLYN SPERRYGATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

Brides-to-be in 2012 areexcited about lots of differ-ent trends, including feath-ers, plenty ofembellishments and gor-geous accessories that willcomplement the gown.

But buying accessoriescan get expensive fast, andthough it’s easy to get sweptup in must-have-it thinking, you need to keep the realityof that budget in mind.

“If you’re only going towear it once, it is hard to ra-tionalize spending hundredsof dollars on accessories,”says Danielle de Luna, de-signer and creator of theDSMeeBee crafting blog.

That’s where DIY comesin. If you’ve ever looked athair accessories or otherwedding finery and thoughtthey couldn’t be that hard tomake, you might be right.

Making your own bridalaccessories not only givesyou bragging rights, but itcan also be a perfect way toachieve the look you wantfor less, de Luna says.

Where to startInstructions abound on-

line for making everythingwedding-related, from invi-tations to centerpieces andeven nontraditional bou-quets out of fabric or spe-cialty papers.

But for the not-so-craftyand the time-challenged,some projects can be a bit in-timidating.

And you do need to be rea-sonable.

•MAKE, Pg. 8

Need amazing accessories? Make them!1. When you cut the netting, usethe factory edge as the edge thatwill sweep along your face. Thisedge should be what will be seen, and the other sloppier edges willbe tucked under to be less notice-able. Also be aware when you cutthat the netting will look unfin-ished wherever you cut it withscissors. 2. Take the leaf-shapedfelt and start hot gluing featherson it. Fan them out the way youwant them to look, and leave thetip completely open so you canhave an area to sew the netting to.3. Take the non-factory side of thenetting, and fold the netting asshown in the photos. Then sewthe folded netting to the felt base.44..This is the tricky part; sit infront of the mirror and shape thenetting how you want it to look.Bunching the netting at the feltand stitching it will help you getthe look you desire. Keep repeat-ing this method untill you get theshape you desire.

De Luna confirms whatevery bride-to-be alreadyknows: Wedding planning isplenty stressful without try-ing to make all the elementsyourself.

There are plenty ofmoney-saving options ifyou’d like to make your wed-ding unique without goingnuts. You don’t even have tostart from scratch necessar-ily; you can put togetheravailable elements cre-atively and achieve a hugesavings, as de Luna didwhen making her own bird-cage veil for her wedding. She started with a hair clipthat cost a dollar, then re-worked it by carefully gluingtogether feathers, felt andnetting for a unique finishedproduct.

(See her photos and in-structions at http://dsmee-bee.blogspot.com/2011/08/sim p l e - i s h - b i r d - c a g e -veil.html)

Making accessories your-self also allows you to haveone-of-a-kind elements thatcan be deeply meaningful.

Try putting materials to-gether in unexpected ways. For her own wedding, deLuna made “a personalizedbouquet pin that had a pic-ture on it of my mom, whopassed away when I was 12.Honestly, in the end, it is thelittle touches that you canmake for yourself that mat-ter the most.

“When I was promising tospend the rest of my lifewith my husband, I lookeddown at my pin with a pic-ture of my mom’s smilingface, and I knew she wasthere with us.”

That bouquet pin tookonly about 30 minutes tomake and cost about $7. “Istill tear up when I thinkabout it,” de Luna admits.

Inspired to get crafty andbring handmade allure toyour wedding? Here’s deLuna’s lineup of accessoriesthat look amazing and thatyou can make cheaply, withno special skills:

• Make a necklace from avintage brooch.

• Buy plain shoes anddress them up with a fabricflower.

• Make your own bridalclutch (easier with a sewingmachine, but do-able with-out).

• Make a “somethingblue” beaded anklet.

The cost of weddings isastronomical – accordingto a survey by weddingwebsite The Knot, the av-erage wedding in the U.S.costs $27,000. But withthe economy not recover-ing quickly and peoplewanting to pinch penniesmore than ever, manybrides and grooms want totrim their wedding budg-ets.

One way to do so is toeliminate the cost of avenue and have the wed-ding in your own backyard. But how do you do so andstill keep your event classywhile keeping down thecosts? Here are some tips:

Plant your ownflowers ››Rather than spending a lot ofmoney on flowers, grow them in

your backyard so they are part ofthe natural décor. Just make sureyou plan early enough so theflowers are in full bloom for your

big day.

Place settingsRenting place settings can eat upa large chunk of your budget. So

pull out the plastic instead.Sounds cheap and tacky? Fearnot. You can find heavyweight dis-posable plates, silverware and

cups (such as thosemade by Re-flections) that look like bonechina and real silver.

Unique to yourhomeThe Knot advises those who arethrowing backyard weddings to

play up your backyard’s best fea-tures. For example, a trellis areacan be used as an “altar” or serveas a focal point for your weddingphotos. Have an enormous tree in

the middle of your lawn? You canincorporate it into your decora-tions by hanging lights from it.Transform your patio or lawn intoa dance floor.

Just the necessitiesAccording to The Knot, there aresome things you’ll just have tospend money on in order to keep

your guests comfortable and thewedding running. For example, you’ll likely need a generator topower catering equipment andlighting, as well as portable bath-rooms so there’s not a log jam inyour house.

Unique reception touches personalize ceremonyOver the course of their life-

times, many people will bewedding guests on several oc-casions. During the height ofwedding season, weddings canrun into one another, as the for-mat and the festivities are sim-ilar at various ceremonies.

Couples interested in set-ting their nuptials apart maywant to enhance the weddingreception with a few uniqueideas.

Who hasn't attended a wed-ding that seems formulaic?

The couple enters, they dotheir spotlight dance, there'sfood, a bouquet toss and thenthe cake cutting. Guests mayactually be able to predictwhat's coming next.

While it is often customaryand easy to follow tradition, that doesn't mean you cannotbuck with tradition and offer afew creative ideas to make yourevent stand out.

Here are several ideas youcan introduce into your wed-ding to add something specialto the reception.

* Skip the big entrance. Those who were kind enough to

attend the ceremony have al-ready been introduced to thenewly minted happy couple. In-stead of spending the cocktailhour in the isolation of the

wedding suite, mingle withyour guests from start to finish. So much time is spent posingfor pictures or being out oftouch with guests, the cocktail

hour can be a great time to sitand chat. Being with guestsduring the cocktail hour meansyou don't have to make that bigentrance from behind closed

doors. Guests will have all eyeson you when you step on thedance floor for your first dancetogether.

* Dance to an upbeat num-ber. Guests are expecting aslow, sappy tune. What theymay not expect is an upbeatsong that shows you are will-ing to have a little fun.

If you haven't mastered thewaltz but enjoy a little quickstep now and again, feel freeto choose a tune that showsyour excitement and love foreach other.

* Encourage couples todance together. It's often cus-tomary for the bridal party tojoin the bride and groom onthe dance floor midwaythrough the first dance.

However, that leavesspouses or significant otherswaiting in the wings whiletheir dates tango with grooms-men or bridesmaids.

Instead, don't have as-signed partners. Rather, en-courage your bridal partymembers to dance withwhomever they choose.

* Swap the garter/bouquettoss for something more mean-ingful. If you're part of a cou-ple who feels the garter andbouquet toss has become trite, there are other ways to create

special moments in your cele-bration -- ones that don't sin-gle out the singletons whohaven't yet found their specialsomeones.

Use this time to present a

small gift or token of your af-fection to someone on theguest list who has served as amentor or source of inspira-tion.

* Choose one special compo-

nent as an extra goodie forguests. Some couples feel themore they offer the betterguests will view their wed-ding. Spending more moneydoesn't necessarily mean

guests will have a better time.If you want to go above and

beyond the ordinary, find onething that you absolutely loveand offer that at the party.

Just like the song ‘Little Brown Church in the Vale’ is a wedding hot spotBy American Profile

There’s a church in the valleyby the wildwood,

no lovelier spot in the dale. These words to a sentimental

and popular old hymn, “TheChurch in the Wildwood,” de-scribe a spot where something ofa miracle occurred about 150years ago.

It seems that a young musicteacher named William Pittswas traveling to visit his bride-to-be in 1857 when the stage-coach stopped briefly in a

wooded glade where Pitts envi-sioned a little church being built.Returning home, he wrote apoem, “Church in the Wildwood,”which he later set to music.

When Pitts and his bride re-turned to the area to settle fiveyears later, they found a littlebrown church had just beenbuilt in the same glade that in-spired him to write the hymnyears earlier. Pitts’ song wassung at the church’s dedicationservice.

Today, the Little BrownChurch in the Vale still standsalong the Cedar River two mileseast of Nashua, Iowa. It is testa-ment to the power of faith, loveand marriage for the thousandsof couples who have been wedthere over the years.

“I’d always heard that if youget married at the Little BrownChurch, it will last forever,” saysRodney Speicher of Garwin,Iowa, who exchanged vows withhis wife, Donna, in the churchon Valentine’s Day in 1998.

Each year, more than 400couples from around the countrycome to the church to be mar-ried in every kind of ceremonyand attire imaginable — fromdenim and lace to leather andsatin.

It could be a flambe pres-entation, a chocolate or candybar, a carving station withyour all-time favorite food(even if that's PB&J), or a car-nival-inspired automatic photobooth.

* Hire a live performer. Al-though it's hard to beat theperformance quality of yourwedding song being performedby the original artist, unlessyou're cousins with CelineDion, chances are she won't beavailable to sing "My HeartWill Go On" at your reception. However, a live band adds acertain level of excitementthat a disk jockey may not beable to provide. Those who areadding a cultural or ethniccomponent to their weddingmay want to hire a dancetroupe or another type of per-former, like a bagpiper, as anadded measure of entertain-ment for guests.

* Let them eat ... cookies? Some people just don't likecake. Therefore, why should acouple have to cut a seven-tiered white confection? Tow-ers of different types of treatscan be created from just aboutanything and serve as the per-fect backdrop for that classiccake-cutting photo. A pyramidof cream puffs, stacks ofbrownies, a cookie castle, or ce-real-cake concoctions canwork. Some bakeries will deco-rate a "dummy" styrofoamcake, and then you can serveapple pie a la mode, if you de-sire.

* Stage a costume switch.Let's face it, dancing all nightin a long gown takes somestamina. As the bride, have amore comfortable cocktaildress available to switch intofor the latter part of the recep-tion. It will also add some va-riety to your wedding photos.

“There are people with smallweddings and those with abridal gown so elaborate itcould be worn in the biggestcathedral,” says Juanita Goings, the church’s volunteer weddingcoordinator for two decades.“Some wear white tails anddrive up in a stretch limousine.”

Large or small, the church’s100-member congregation wel-comes the weddings and takesgreat pride in maintaining itsrenowned church. In 1998, thebell tower was restored, and in2000 the congregation raisedmoney to renovate the churchbasement and install air condi-tioning.

More than 40,000 visitorscome to the Little BrownChurch each year. In October2009, the 73,000th wedding washeld at the church.

The congregation also hostsan annual gathering the firstSunday of every August for cou-ples married in the LittleBrown Church. The 60th re-union is this year.

Couples can get hitched for$175 to $900, depending onnumber of guests, or renewtheir vows for $75 on a weekdayor $150 on Saturdays. An or-ganist and soloist cost $50extra.

At the end of each ceremony, the bridal couple is invited toring the church bell together, asymbol that they will pull to-gether throughout their mar-ried life.

Trending toppersWhat’s new on top of the wedding cakeBy Cynthia Reyna | Gate-

House News Service

Cake toppers have been partof the American wedding caketradition for more than a century, and while marriages haveevolved over the years, so havecake toppers.

While some couples stillchoose the traditional bride-and-groom toppers, more couples nowprefer more self-reflective, whim-sical pieces that are sure to geteveryone at the reception talking.

After starting his cake toppersbusiness online 10 years ago,Aaron Ellsworth, vice presidentof sales and marketing ofwww.caketoppers.com, says wed-ding toppers have become morepersonalized over the years. Cou-ples are beginning to veer awayfrom the time-honored plastic fig-urines that were popular duringtheir parents' time. Now, theywant something that reflectstheir personalities, hobbies andinterests as a couple.

Pastry chef Lorelie Carvey ofwww.wedding-cakes-for-you.com,who baked her first wedding cakein 1984 and now has her own in-formational site on weddingcakes, has experienced the sametrend from her customers: "Moreand more brides and grooms arechoosing not to have the tradi-tional figurines. A unique or per-sonalized topper is what mostbrides and grooms want. Themost popular are toppers thathave some sort of meaning to thecouple."

One of the most popular per-sonalized selections, according toEllsworth, is the monogram caketopper.

Other trends include ethnictoppers and humorous toppers, such as a couch potato groom fig-urine, says Ellsworth.

Carvey has also seen sometopper choices beginning to trendsuch as cartoon characters, in-cluding Marge and Homer Simp-son, and figurines to represent acouple's pet.

Couples now have hundredsmore selections for cake toppersthan they did before, thanks tothe Internet. At various cake top-per sites, options include reli-gious-, career-, music- andhobby-themed toppers, as well asfloral ones.
