4. SKILLS, ABILITIES, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

INNOVATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY

I worked at Cut and Fill Pty Ltd which involved solving various problems in the fields of estimating, project planning and site operations for both road construction and the telecommunications division. Some examples are shown below:

-One hundred year old bridge demolition in Sale required innovative problem solving for environmental, safety and time management of the project. One example was the use of floating pontoons to catch the concrete slurry before falling into the environmentally sensitive pond below, then sucking the slurry out with slurry vacuums.

-Working in the telecommunications division. I helped in planning site layout, Quality assurance, planning and organising subcontractors to carry out works on time and on cost and more. The works included the foundations, erection, earthing and placement of headframes and connections for 30 – 50m SP Ausnet ‘smart meter’ poles. This also included the site layout below which included earthing, fencing, dimensions, stairs, concreting and placement of materials to specifications. I also helped in the construction of the headframes for the SP Ausnet ‘smart meter’ poles.

-In the Estimating division I had to attain quotes and help to work out project costs for tender bids, the hardest part of this being the lack of knowledge I had about the industry when I began. The way that I got past that was constant discussions with my colleagues and persistently reading through the available information I had.

Some other examples in my working life are:- Stocking truck - Dealing with customers if stock is not available- Time management (developing schedules for each day to effectively and efficiently

deliver the goods)

Examples from university- Brainstorming and developing ideas for a broad range of university projects

PREPAREDNESS TO UNDERTAKE FURTHER TRAINING TO KEEP ABREAST OF MODERN PRACTICES AND TECHNIQUES

Extracurricular activities such attending university functions and information sessionsPost graduate learning (Certificate of Construction Management)

Looking to follow up with either a Master of Engineering and Construction Management or Master of Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Personally I think innovation and constantly learning and improving is the key to success in any business. I would fully accommodate and involve myself with any training that would improve myself and the business.

Undergraduate membership to Engineers AustraliaWorking as a labourer to gain further on site experience for CMR Personnel

ABILITY TO ANALYSE DATA AND PRESENT INFORMATION ACCESSIBLY

I have found through my studies, projects and work life that one minor mistake can cost a lot of time and work, therefore constant checking of work and the use of iterative procedures can help to improve the time, fluidity and overall quality of projects. I have very good attention to detail; this has been improved through working on large projects at university and with Cut and Fill. One of the major criteria working with Cut and Fill was reading, understanding and applying specifications and drawings in estimating, on a major bridge construction site in Sale and in my time working with the Telecommunications division. I constantly look to improve this skill through every project I undertake.

ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE TIME ALLOCATIONS

On site – Effectively time allocating tasks and the labour force on the bridge and roadwork’s construction project in Sale.

Estimating – time managing the various tasks to have the tender submitted on time. Planning – managing my own time to have certain design and planning tasks delivered on time

to keep the various projects that were undertaken in the Comms & Fibre division from being delayed.

Labouring – Managing my time properly on site to do as good a job as possibleDon Smallgoods – Scheduling and managing time constantly throughout each day to be able to

deliver the goods to various areas in the Melbourne city region on time.University – My time management skills have developed to a higher level in the past few years

and this has shown through the improvement of my marks. I have found that the more effectively you use your time the better the outcome of both work and life in general.

ABILITY TO FORM POSITIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH A WIDE RANGE OF FUNCTIONAL AREAS

On site – The ability to work on site and keep positive relationships helps with both productivity and overall happiness of the work force. I enjoyed my time on site in Sale because of the positive relationships I formed with the work force.

Working in head office with Cut and Fill in estimating and then planning was good because I had a few more people I could talk to and ask questions.

Working in the smallgoods industry brings you across various different people with different backgrounds and attitudes. This has helped me to be able to talk and form positive relationships with a wider variety of people.

University – working on group projects at university is tough at times but throughout each project we managed to succeed. Providing people with tasks and positive motivation and help can help create a quality group project.

Have improved my interpersonal skills in a professional working environment at Cut and Fill and CMR personnel.

My communication skills have also developed further as I was travelling around Europe on my own. Being able to communicate with all sorts of people proved to be a valuable skill.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS - WRITTEN

Toolern Vale Writing professional emails to subcontractors and other professional entities at Cut and Fill Writing professional emails to customers while working at the UGG Shop

LEADERSHIP

I have developed my leadership skills throughout university, Work, High School and Sport through taking on leadership roles in group projects in both university and High School, captaining Basketball and School Sports teams and also being house captain in year twelve.

I believe that in order to become a good leader you have to have a good understanding of a variety of things, such as the people you are working with, the principles and knowledge of what you are working on/ towards and a strong desire to succeed. I believe I am working towards becoming a good leader. The key criteria in becoming a leader and the areas in which I am striving to improve are; integrity, work ethic, communication, knowledge and a desire to continuously develop and succeed.

ABILITY TO HANDLE PRESSURE

Working under deadlines for work, university and school has helped me develop my ability to handle pressure of my work. I work well under pressure but I have found that it is always better to try to reduce the pressure I’m under by finishing work promptly.
