NETWORKING 101

FOR BREAK THROUGH

NAMES ARE IMPORTANT! LEARN THEIR NAME, TEACH YOUR NAME.

• Come up with a tagline, a short identifier after your name

• Answer one or more of these questions.

Why are you here?

Who are you?

How do you relate to me? Look for connections and touchpoints!

HELLO, MY NAME IS ______________________________ and I’m a (what year) student at Susquehanna

University studying (which major). I’ve had some experience with . . . (something relevant to your field of

interest, or to the alumni’s field – an internship, a club or organizational role, a volunteer experience or class),

and I’m excited to learn more from you about (what they can help you with in relation to their own career

paths).

THE FIRST THING YOU WILL BE ASKED – “SO, TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF”

Practice your 30-60 second elevator pitch. You can find resources on mySU under “Interviewing.” There is also

an informational interview handout on the resources tab of Handshake.

RESEARCH ALUMNI YOU’D LIKE TO MEET - AND MAKE THEM FEEL VALUED WHEN YOU MEET THEM

• Connect with them on LinkedIn and ask them questions about their areas of expertise, before and after

the event.

• Thank them for their time in coming and in sharing advice with you.

TOP NETWORKING TIPS

• Do your homework: Research the people BEFORE the event and plan your strategy.

• Set your goals: For example, “Meet five alumni in my field of interest.”

• Make a good first impression: Give a firm handshake, make eye contact, and SMILE!

• Introduce yourself: Be interesting and brief (practice your elevator pitch).

• Prepare conversation starters: Find connection points, such as majors, athletics, clubs and hometown.

• Keep it short: Each conversation should be 5 – 8 minutes long.

• Don’t forget them: Ask for a business card and write notes about follow-up on the back.

• Make graceful exits: Say thank you, shake hands, and don’t overstay your welcome.

• Follow up: Write thank-you notes within 24 hours to those who offered helpful information.

• Establish a reciprocal relationship: offer, and look for ways, to help.

Page 24: BREAK THROUGH Feb. 7 8, 2020 SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE Friday ... Through 2020 Booklet.final.… · 2 – 6 p.m. Career Expo (Mellon Lounge and Benjamin Apple Meeting Rooms) The Career

• ADDITIONAL NETWORKING ADVICE

• Make a confident introduction

• Extend your hand first

• Name tags go on the right

• Don’t spend the event only talking to your friends or current students – step away from the group and

meet new people

• Shake hands to say hello and goodbye

FOLLOW-UP AFTER BREAK THROUGH

• Stay in front of their faces and don’t get discouraged

• Connect on LinkedIn

• Send an “updates” email

• Ask for resume/job search advice

• Use mySU for email template to SU alumni

• But be aware – there is a fine line between being assertive and aggressive!
