Architectural and historical note

Brandsby Hall was built by Francis Cholmeley in the 1740’s and took 6 years

to complete. The Cholmeleys had lived at Brandsby since the late 16th

century and stayed until 1912. At its most extensive it reached 2,564 acres

in 1745. During much of their time they were victims of the persecution

handed out to Catholic families of the day. Folklore has it that the last priest

hole to be built in the country was at Brandsby. Described by Pevsner as a

“nobly proportioned piece of 7 bays and 2½ storeys and with the stables

attributed to John Carr of York”, Brandsby Hall was the subject of a Country

Life article in January 1969, in which John Cornforth wrote “the view is a

marvellous one....with the countryside stretching away to a low horizon

under a high sky, the vanishing line only broken on a clear day by the three

towers of York Minster”.

Listed Grade II*, the south and west facades are faced with ashlar whilst the

eastern façade is of coursed rubble. Internally the house boasts a wealth of

architectural interest with a spacious staircase hall with an oak staircase and

mahogany balustrade built by Matthew Ward, and having ornate plaster

work by Jos Cortese who was responsible for a number of other major North

Yorkshire houses. The original entrance hall became the drawing room in 1785.

Brandsby Hall

Standing on a low ridge and commanding extensive views south over the

Vale of York towards the towers of York Minster on the skyline, Brandsby

Hall is set in a wonderful position. Behind are the Howardian Hills and the

North York Moors. Approached down a gravel drive, the house stands

proudly in landscaped gardens and overlooks open parkland.

The Hall has recently undergone an extensive programme of renovation.

The entire project has been carried out to an exacting standard yet

sympathetically incorporating modern day conveniences whilst protecting

the original features including superb ornate plasterwork, door furniture,

shuttered windows and fine fireplaces.

Page 8: brandsby hall - OnTheMarket · 2016. 10. 26. · The Hall is approached down a gravelled drive through electric gates with a small Arboretum at its entrance with a variety of trees

The main entrance to the hall is on the eastern elevation and opens to a

large galleried reception hall.

‘The principal reception rooms are all south facing rooms and include the

study, drawing room and billiard room. These rooms all enjoy wonderful

views out over the garden and open countryside beyond. All main reception

rooms have exceptional proportions and are beautifully light, providing

superb entertainment space. Also on the ground floor and of particular

note is the bespoke kitchen/ breakfast room which is fitted with two central

islands, custom-made units and a spacious dining area to one end with

pantry off. Beyond the kitchen and to the rear of the house are a laundry

room and boot room with access to the courtyard.

The bedroom accommodation is laid out over the first and second floors

and is reached from the principal staircase in the hall. The accommodation

offers an excellent ratio of bedroom suites together with a self-contained

flat on the second floor. In total there are 10 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
