BrandingThe definition of branding is he marketing practice of creating a name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products. Branding is very important in the music industry as it allows artists work to be recognized and stand out compared to others.

Branding can be defined as a "name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers. As such branding is an important part of the music business. Record companies can spend hours creating a defined "brand" for a band, particularly with pop bands, many of which are fabricated by the record companies. These brands are important as they will say something about the artist to the audience and have the potential to change audiences perceptions of them. To a band a brand is a unique identity that says something about them.

Nicki MinajNicki Minaj’s recurring motif is actually herself. She presents herself as an

individual character and uses this and her unique persona to promote her products. She is known for using Pink in almost everything she does and has even called her

album ‘Pink Friday’.

In terms of font she uses quite feminine ones although she has a unisex audience. She makes herself an object of awe to her female audience and desirable to males.

EminemEminem on many of his advertisements and album covers has Large, bold font, written in capital letters with the signature "E" facing the opposite way. Even with his Encore album "Eminem" isn't written on it but the "E" still faces the wrong way so it is recognizable too fans that it is his work (pictured above). On a lot of his work he has the Parental Advisory label on it as most of his songs contain swearing (pictured below). "Eminem" himself is a brand as this isn't his real name but one he uses as an alter ego just like "Slim Shady", his real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers the second which isn't very well known to the public.

TypographyThe font that we use is important and should enforce the image of the band and promote its ideas. Here I have selected a range of fonts, some that I felt were appropriate and others the

clearly don’t fit into the genre of the band.

This font is quite appropriate for our band but doesn’t really have that punk edge

we’re looking for

The fonts below have a catchy edge to them and are probably more

appropriate but they might be a bit too much because although we want

it to be recognizable we want the main focus to be on the band.

Clearly the two above fonts and the one below are inappropriate because they are covered in love

hearts and very immature and girly. And the one below has quite a circus feel to it which doesn’t give

off the impression that the band is serious.

The Final choice

We decided to change the name of our band from The Release to Contraband because The Release seemed like more of a name for a boy band and we need our name to be reflective of the music that

is produced. I then found some fonts that I found were the best for our band.

Band LOGO

Here is a selection of bands that have logos for their band. It shows that the logo doesn’t necessarily have to be a picture like the rolling stones logo but it can be the name of the band

positioned in a recognizable way.

This means that whatever font we use for our band we could then potentially have that as our logo and the band would be

recognized from this
