The Office of Police Integrity (OPI); is interested in hearing from consumers of mental health services who have had contact with police over the years; specifically in relation to being taken to hospital or in situations when a person is appearing to be unwell and police have been called. The Office of Police Integrity is particularly interested in anyone who has had experience under the recent PACER trials in Moorabbin and Prahran, which involved police attending with mental health practitioners. OPI want to know whether consumers experience of contact with police has changed over recent years. It is possible to have your say by contacting either Sue Tait directly over the internet: [email protected] or David McDonald on [email protected]; or by ringing 86356110. Contact can be anonymous.

Carers and family members are important contributors to the care of a person with a mental illness. To assist and support you in your caring role there is available the Carer Support Fund. So, what is the Carer Support Fund and how can I access it? The Carer Support Fund (CSF) aims to assist the carer/parent/family member by providing support and assistance when required. The main goal of this funding is to help promote and sustain the caring relationship and the wellbeing of the carer/parent/family member. To be eligible to access this funding you have to be a carer of a consumer of South West Healthcare, Mental Health Services. You can get more information and/or discuss your circumstances with the clinician (or carer consultant) of the person for whom you are a carer. You will be asked questions to determine the best way to assist you in your caring role. You will also be asked to provide relevant documentation including original tax invoices, quotes or receipts to support your application. It is important to note that funds are limited, therefore financial assistance cannot be provided on a regular basis. Applications are assessed on an individual basis. The Mental Health Service can provide a range of immediate support which can include petrol, movie, massage and grocery vouchers.

If you are a family member, friend or carer of a person using our service and would like to become more involved, please call Alison Tickner, Carer Consultant on 5561 9100 or email the Participation Team [email protected]

“The Delta Dogs are great Company. They make me feel happy and calm”

Delta Therapy Dogs is a Volunteer program run by Delta Society Australia. Delta dogs provide an excellent source of diversional therapy. They can also assist with individual residents’ therapy programs in areas such as physical or intellectual maintenance or rehabilitation, speech and emotional well being. The presence of a companion animal reduces stress and increases interactivity and humour. There is often an increase in friendly interaction between residents, visitors and staff as the Therapy Dog team provides a catalyst for communication and interaction between people. Some of the benefits may include: Patient- therapist interaction Staff-animal interaction increased muscle strength and range of motion pain management reduction of blood pressure and heart rate greater self-esteem and emotional well-being improved patient independence improved social interactions creating a home-like environment and a positive effect on the community Recently the Delta Dogs visited the ECIU at South West Health Care. Choux Choux a Griffon Bruxellois and Harry the Kelpie were a huge hit. The Delta Dogs will be visiting the ECIU once a week.

These are some of the factors that promote mental health and wellbeing for Children of Parents with mental illness...

Knowledge that they are not to blame for their parents' illness

Help and support from extended family members

A stable home environment

A sense of being loved by their parent

A naturally stable and happy personality in the child

Positive self-esteem

Inner strength and coping skills in the child

A strong relationship with a healthy adult

Friendships, positive peer relationships

Interest and success at school

Healthy interests outside of home-life for the child

Help from outside the family to improve the family environment

As parents, relatives, neighbours, community members and health workers we need to support children, parents and families where a parent has mental illness. We can do this by offering assistance, talking and listening, being positive and open and speaking up if we hear or see discrimination occurring.

STAR Beat Choir You may not know, but the choir celebrated its third birthday at the end of March. It’s lovely to look back over all the achievements in the past three years including producing 2 CDs, performing in Melbourne to officially open Mental Health Week, writing an original song, performing at the many festivals and events, and just to reflect on all the joy that the choir spreads wherever they perform.

It has again been a busy couple of months for the Choir. From performances at Archie Graham Centre, Vision Australia and Bunnings; to thinking about new songs to learn together, choosing new uniforms and even planning to write another original song! Luckily, the joy of singing gives energy…..

Hi my name is Cameron Shaw. Drawing is my way of thinking out loud. My head is always cluttered. And my voice is seen in my images. I believe people who have mental troubles have lost their voice. And the road to recovery is a waste of time if you are not honest with yourself. I also do creative writing. The mind’s eye plays a huge part in how I see the world. Relationships are my greatest inspiration for my work. I started drawing when I truly realised my spirit is in my eye, and my hand is a peripheral interpreter. Please enjoy my work. If people did not enjoy it, I may not enjoy it to its full length of inspiration.

Thankyou.

Monday 14 May – Sunday 20 May National Volunteers Week recognises the valuable contribution made by volunteers across Australia. We are lucky enough to have a number of volunteers who support us so generously. The great news is that volunteering is great for mental health. Research shows that people who assist others unselfishly have higher rates of health and happiness.

We thank you for your continued support.
