BOW is for ALL women.BOW and Camp Fire place a high value on inclusivity. Camp Fire,

purposefully supports communities and groups underserved by other programs or agencies - such as women participating in historically predominantly male-focused activities such as

hunting and fishing. Camp Fire welcomes children, youth, and adults regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status,

disability, sexual orientation, or other aspect of diversity. Becoming an Outdoors-Woman® fosters an environment of

respect for the dignity and worth of all participants, volunteers, and instructors. Diversity is recognized as an important

component of the program. Bias, prejudice, discrimination, and harassment in all forms and manifestations are not tolerated. Discrimination based on an individual’s race, gender, religion,

color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, pregnancy, or parental status is

demeaning to all, impairs the process of education, and violates individual rights.

Women needing reasonable accommodations related to specific medical diets, mobility challenges, or hearing/sight should

request these items on their Workshop Registration and contact the BOW Director with questions.

BOW is a non-profit, educational program offering hands-on, outdoor workshops

to adult women in the United States and Canada since 1991. All BOW programs emphasize a supportive environment

for novices conducive to learning, making friends, and having fun. BOW is not a membership organization and no

experience is necessary to participate in the programs.

All BOW Workshops require teaching a

balance of hunting and shooting; fishing and boating; and non-consumptive

outdoor recreation activities such as campfire cooking, crafts, and outdoor

skills. Additional specialty trips to develop skills gained at BOW Workshops are

offered throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad.

BOW is for ALL women 18 years

and older of varying fitness, confidence, and skill levels.

LODGINGThe Bartlett House is a one-room, open bunkhouse with central heat and air, restrooms, showers, and a standard kitchen. The shared space with staff, participants, and food service creates more time for informal networking during non-class times. Be prepared for a communal living experience with about 30 other women that maintain different sleeping styles – many times this close-knit experience creates life-long friendships! Limit 30 staff & participants - $210

Indoor bunk space is limited – both top and bottom beds on the bunk beds will be utilized. Help give bottom-bunk priority to those with physical challenges by indicating on your registration your willingness to stay on a top-bunk. Linens are not provided.

TENTINGA very large, grassy meadow provides ample space for tenters that still want the comforts of nearby facilities. The meadow is right outside the Bartlett House with restrooms and showers inside. Cars remain in the parking areas creating a picturesque camp community in the meadow. Bring your own tent and everything you need to be comfortable during the weekend. No limit - $200

COMMUTERSFor the first time – and to welcome more women – a reduced rate is available for those within commuting distance or for those who prefer to stay in near-by accommodations. Downtown Sapulpa is approximately 6 miles away, Jenks is about 15 miles away, and downtown Tulsa is about 20 miles away. Stay as long as you’d like each evening then return in time for classes in the morning – breakfast is NOT included for commuters. No limit - $190

SCHOLARSHIPSDue to the generosity of previous BOW participants and staff, scholarships are

available to welcome first-time attendees based on requested need. Pay a $50 deposit

to register then submit a Scholarship Form by March 9.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICYCancellations on or before March 9 will result in a 50% refund. Registrants who do not attend, or cancel their registration after March 9, will be responsible for full program fees. You may,

however, send a substitute in your place – please notify us in advance if doing so. Your substitute

will attend your assigned classes and stay in your assigned lodging location.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Previous evening activities have included facilitated game or craft time, presentations from local agencies, and storytelling. Follow BOW Oklahoma on Facebook to find out this year’s plans!

Don’t miss Sunday’s lunch! Door prizes are available to participants that submit evaluations for each of their specific classes. A drawing for a FREE Spring 2016 BOW Workshop is available to those that

submit their evaluation of the full workshop.

BOW SHOPPINGStaff and participants are invited to bring outdoor clothing or gear, that’s in good shape, to sell at the BOW GARAGE SALE. Many times, these are items you’ve “upgraded” and no longer need, but are still

in good condition. Proceeds go the BOW program, unless otherwise specified.

The BOWtique is available throughout the weekend and offers various BOW and Camp Fire merchandise available for purchase.

Workshop classes are intentionally facilitated on a novice level, as an introduction for women who have little or no knowledge of how to get started in activities related to hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. Classes emphasize experiential learning over lecture, providing hands-on opportunities for most, if not all, class participants.

The deliberate lack of competition during the workshop creates a less threatening atmosphere for beginners, especially when they try something new and different.

Internationally, BOW Workshop classes maintain a balance between the three categories listed in the grid below. BOW provides all required class supplies, though

participants are welcome to bring and learn on their own equipment, if desired.

DON’T BE DISAPPOINTED WITH YOUR CLASSESRead the class descriptions carefully before registering – don’t base your decision on the titles alone. Request more details if you’re still not sure of class intentions. Note the “Class Activity Rating” in each class description to choose topics best suited for you. Identify a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice for each time. Classes fill quickly and many participants are assigned their 2nd or

3rd choice, so choose three classes that appeal to you. Remember, classes are for beginners so challenge yourself to try something new and outside your comfort zone!

Immediately after registering online, you’ll receive a statement via email confirming your registration, lodging choice, and method of payment. Approximately two weeks before the

Workshop, you’ll receive emails with a confirmation packet and class assignments. The Confirmation Packet includes check-in times, lodging information, packing list, and directions

to camp. Those requesting a scholarship or with outstanding balances before the Workshop will have additional contact with Camp Fire staff.

BECOMING AN OUTDOORS-WOMAN®

Page 8: BOW Spring 2015

FRIDAY AFTERNOON, 2-5 pmClimbingClimb on! Artificial climbing walls have a completely different feel than a real cliff, but they allow you to gain the basic skills necessary before free-climbing in a natural environment. Personalize your experience by moving the handholds around allowing you to focus on specific skills or moves. Bring your own certified and approved harness and helmet or wear one of ours.

Creative Jewelry Have an antique pendant you’d like to make more modern? How about a broken bracelet you can’t part with but never wear? Make it all new again by learning basic jewelry making skills. Replace-ment closures and many, many beads will be available to adapt your own pieces or create new ones. We can’t wait to see your new BOW bling!

Gourmet Fish Fish are good for more than just frying! Join a local Executive Chef to test a variety of preparation methods with different species of fish. And the best part? Taste testing it all when you’re done! Your friends and family will be impressed with your new-found master chef skills!

Kayak Fishing Combine your love of boating with your love of fishing for the best of both worlds! Educate yourself on the gear specifically made for kayak fishing then launch yourself from the shores of Euchee Creek in a very stable, recreational kayak to practice your skills. Bring your own USCG approved lifejacket or wear one of ours.

Photography There’s beauty everywhere, you just have to look for it! Discover new angles and perspectives to see all the art that exists in the natural world. Adjust your viewpoint as you explore Camp Okiwanee, search-ing for inspiration to capture creative compositions for the “perfect shot”. Bring your own fully-charged camera of choice – DSLR, phone, or “point & shoot” – and owner’s manual, if you have it.

SATURDAY MORNING, 9-NoonArcheryBULLSEYE! Experience this re-popularized sport and practice your shooting accuracy. Proper shooting techniques and stance, using both compound and recurve bows, will be explained. You will have an opportunity for plenty of hands-on archery shooting, and then finish the class with fun archery games.

Car Confidence You drive your car every day, but might feel overwhelmed when it comes to simple maintenance. Put your worries at ease as you work with Camp Fire’s favorite mechanics at KC Auto. Learn to change a tire, check the air pressure, check your oil, back a trailer, and how to be prepared when talking to a mechanic.

Dutch Oven Desserts Your mouth will water at the smells wafting from your new favorite cookware. Recognize the value of maintaining the perfect tempera-ture in your Dutch Oven to produce delicious desserts, and savor the sweet taste of success! This is definitely a family heirloom to preserve for future generations!

Kayaking You won’t be flipping upside down in these kayaks! Launch yourself from the shores of Euchee Creek in a very stable, recreational kay-ak. Develop a sense of comfort with the equipment and then start paddling solo in a flat-water kayak. Expand your skills with plenty of paddling time and kayak games on the water. Bring your own USCG approved lifejacket or wear one of ours.

Self-DefenseSolo trips and activities can be a lot of fun – and a lot less worrisome if you know basic self-defense! Gain hands-on knowledge from a fellow BOW woman who is a 4th degree black belt in Goju Ryu karate and 2nd degree black belt in Shotokan karate. Techniques will range from stopping someone from touching you without harming them to de-fending yourself against someone holding a weapon.

“I gained a sense of accomplishment for stepping outside my comfort zone and succeeding in new and

chal lenging tasks.”

Page 10: BOW Spring 2015

SATURDAY AFTERNOON, 2-5 pmBasic Fishing Want to swap fishing yarns with your best buds but don’t know how to get started? Start with the basics – knots, hooks, lures, and baits – to reel in “the big one!” This class is for those with little to no knowledge of fishing. Look at the “Social Fishing” class to relax and fish with friends. Bring your own equipment or use ours.

Canning Try your hand at a couple of basic water-bath canning recipes such as salsa and pickles with fresh produce. This easy to learn method doesn’t require a lot of start-up costs and is great for beginners. Review safe food storage, canning, and preservation techniques as you create tasty take-home treats to share with your friends and family.

Challenge Course It’s mind over matter as you challenge yourself through mental and, at times, physical challenges on Camp Okiwanee’s low ele-ments ropes course. Build trust and develop lasting friendships with other participants as you step out of your comfort zone then celebrate at the end when you experience success!

Map & Compass What do you do on the trail when your GPS battery dies or your phone has no service? Any BOW woman should be prepared with their trusty map and compass! These skills are invaluable for geo-caching, letterboxing, or even navigating on the open road.

Turkey Hunting No need to buy turkey for your next Thanksgiving dinner! Learn the basics so you can hunt your own! Review myths and truths, mental and physical preparation, decoys, blinds, and land owner relations. Best part? You’ll go home talking turkey with your own turkey call!

“I get to speak to and laugh with and enjoy these strangers – who have suddenly become non-strangers –

because of this wonderful interest we are sharing.”

Create tools specifically for outdoor cooking and develop an appreciation for fire building based on what you’re cooking. Bring an empty stomach – taste testing is the best part!

BOW has occurred in Oklahoma for over 20 years! In 2004, Camp Fire Green Country began hosting BOW – a perfect match for a national, co-educational, youth

development organization that provides opportunities for youth and families to be outside to learn, explore, and

play together while developing a lifelong appreciation and respect for the outdoor environment. BOW and youth-focused Camp Fire programs, such as summer camp, help reach

children and adults individually to build skills they can share together as a family either on their own time, or together at

Camp Fire events.
