To!our!Members,!Alumnae,!Faculty,!and!Partners:!!!Everyone!who!joins!our!family!of!business;oriented!women!deserves!the!transformative!experience!that!Kyra!and!I!received!at!the!hands!of!able!predecessors!such!as!Jessica!Chang,!Hannah!Sieber,!Cong!Ding,!Joanna!Bromley,!and!Christine!Devenny.!I!wasn’t!sure!if!I!was!talented!enough!join!this!distinguished!group!of!mentors!and!deliver!a!comparable!experience!to!our!members,!but!then!it!hit!me:!BOW$succeeds$because$it$takes$risks$to$stay$ahead$of$the$game.!It!was!time!to!let!go!of!those!misgivings!and!jump!into!the!ordered!chaos!because!BOW!is!(and!always!will!be)!fundamentally!a!startup!driven!by!entrepreneurial!individuals.!!! !Now!as!I!write!this!letter!I!am!happy!to!say!that!leading!BOW!with!Kyra!has!been!fulfilling!and!eye;opening.!Our!risk;taking!has!paid!off!in!terms!of!continually!expanding!BOW’s!network!and!fostering!a!culture!of!engagement,!ambition,!and!leadership!in!one!of!Duke’s!premier!pre;professional!organizations.!!

To!start,!BOW’s!membership!and!alumnae!base!is!broader!than!ever.!Our!community!of!over!200!women!comprises!entrepreneurs,!bankers,!consultants,!teachers,!techies,!marketers,!venture!capitalists,!future!lawyers,!social!activists,!world!travelers,!and!so!many!more.!BOW’s!competitive!application!and!interview!process!selects!women!who!are!both!intellectually!and!professionally!driven!—!the!depth!and!breadth!of!our!members’!accomplishments!as!they!progress!from!undergraduates!to!alumnae!never!cease!to!amaze!me.!!! !This!commitment!to!diversity!has!helped!us!to!refine!a!strong!undergraduate!mentorship!program,!which!caters!to!interests!ranging!from!fashion!to!healthcare.!Furthermore,!we!recently!inaugurated!a!pilot!alumnae!mentorship!program!that!pairs!alumnae!with!undergraduates!who!share!similar!aspirations!—enabling!alumnae!to!continue!their!involvement!in!the!

professional!development!of!Duke!women.!This!culture!of!mentorship!works!alongside!an!already!impressive!lineup!of!speakers,!skills!workshops,!and!other!events!to!inspire!BOW!women!to!reach!the!top!of!their!respective!fields.!!! !In!fact,!Fall!2013!saw!an!expansion!in!our!programming!to!renew!relationships!with!our!partners!in!addition!to!forging!new!relationships!with!distinguished!alumni,!faculty,!industry!representatives,!and!C;level!executives.!Our!newest!industry!partners!include!Abercrombie$&$Fitch,!Banana$Republic,!Blackstone,!Boeing,!Bull$City$Forward,!Burger$King,!Cisco,!and!Cvent.!Our!newest!on;campus!collaborations!include!an!academic!sponsorship!through!the!Coach!K!Center!on!Leadership!and!Ethics,!a!partnership!with!the!Duke!Development!Office!which!manages!relationships!with!Duke!alumni,!and!participation!in!the!Duke!Women’s!Caucus!which!addresses!gender!equity!issues!on!campus.!Lastly,!our!vision!and!goals!would!not!be!possible!without!the!generous!contributions!of!our!corporate!sponsors,!and!I!am!pleased!to!welcome!Accenture!and!Cisco!as!our!newest!donors!to!this!group.!!!Of!course,!at!the!core!of!every!successful!startup!is!an!executive!board!that!works!tirelessly!to!keep!the!organization!moving!forward.!I!could!not!imagine!managing!BOW!without!Kyra!Socolof,!my!co;President,!who!keeps!me!focused!on!what’s!important.!Her!intensity!and!attention!to!detail!is!admirable!because!she!asks!the!questions!I!fail!to!ask!and!remembers!the!details!that!I!forget.!Together!we!have!managed!9!vice;presidents!and!10!chairs—BOW’S!largest!executive!team!to!date.!Their!accomplishments!are!too!numerous!to!capture!without!writing!a!novel,!but!between!them!they!have:!hosted!approximately!9!general!body!meetings,!read!114!membership!applications,!organized!a!retreat!for!47!new!members,!overseen!mentor;mentee!pairings!for!over!170!members,!introduced!alumnae!mentors!to!24!undergraduates,!managed!relationships!with!over!6!corporate!sponsors,!amassed!121!Twitter!followers!(in!addition!to!231!tweets),!read/edited!over!50!articles!for!2!editions!of!BOW’s!newsletter,!and!blasted!over!210!emails!to!keep!our!members!in!the!loop!(some!would!say!that’s!too!many,!but!we!can’t!help!ourselves).!Together,!this!executive!board!has!planned!and!implemented!logistics!for!over!58!events—including!mentorship!events,!professional!development!workshops,!general!body!meetings,!and!recruitment!events.!

Spring!Business!Conference!in!Keohane!Atrium.!BOW’s!SBC!Chair!Marissa!Maetani!teamed!up!with!DBS’!Jay!Wang!and!Neal!Padhye!to!present!a!lineup!of!keynote!speakers!and!panelists!of!Duke!alumni!and!current!students!to!discuss!this!year’s!theme!of!Social!Media!and!Entrepreneurship.!The!event!covered!entrepreneurship!opportunities!on!and!outside!of!Duke’s!campus!as!well!as!social!media’s!role!in!a!start;up!environment.!!!!

Kathie!Amato,!Director!of!Education!for!the!Duke!Innovation!and!Entrepreneurship!Initiative,!started!the!conference!off!by!unveiling!the!new!Certificate!in!Innovation!and!Entrepreneurship.!Next,!the!conference!showcased!a!panel!of!three!entrepreneurs:!Tatiana!Birgisson,!founder!of!Mati!Energy;!Jake!Stauch,!founder!and!CEO!of!NeuroSpire;!and!Bryan!Silverman,!co;founder!of!both!Star!Toilet!Paper!and!Install!Media.!When!asked!about!how!to!build!credibility!as!an!entrepreneur,!the!panelists!responded!that!an!unwavering!commitment!to!the!business!and!a!positive!attitude!are!key.!!!

Since!its!creation!in!Fall!2011,!BOW’s!Mentorship!Program!has!steadily!expanded!and!evolved!to!meet!our!members’!needs.!We!remain!committed!to!building!a!close;knit!community!within!the!organization,!empowering!younger!members,!and!providing!an!opportunity!for!seniors!to!develop!leadership!skills!and!give!back!to!the!organization.!The!mentorship!program!continues!to!provide!a!platform!for!valuable!interaction!between!younger!and!older!members!through!events!in!the!professional,!social,!and!one;on;one!settings.!

! This!spring,!due!to!the!large!number!of!highly!qualified,!business;oriented!applicants,!we!accepted!more!women!into!our!organization!and!expanded!our!mentors!from!25!to!42!in!order!to!reach!the!goal!of!providing!every!freshman!and!sophomore!member!with!a!mentor.!We!paired!each!of!our!mentors!with!two!to!three!underclassmen!who!shared!similar!career!goals.!On!a!monthly!basis,!mentors!are!expected!to!meet!with!their!mentees!to!go!over!goal;setting!and!planning!worksheets!and!organize!one!family!dinner.!This!year,!we!also!implemented!a!simple!and!efficient!accountability!system!to!track!how!often!members!are!able!to!meet.!Through!these!initiatives,!younger!members!are!provided!with!resources!to!guide!them!through!academics,!career!exploration,!and!skill;building,!while!simultaneously!allowing!older!members!to!develop!leadership!skills,!contribute!to!the!organization,!and!leave!a!legacy.!

! The!highlight!of!the!semester!was!the!mentorship!orientation!event!in!which!Bill!Wright;Swadel,!the!Fannie!Mitchell!Executive!Director!of!the!Duke!Career!Center,!spoke!to!our!members!about!mentorship!in!the!context!of!a!Board!of!Directors.!He!pointed!out!that!each!of!us!needs!a!wide!variety!of!advisors,!and!that!a!BOW!mentor!can!be!one!key!contributing!member.!Other!mentorship!events!included!an!article!discussion!about!women!in!business,!an!ice!cream!social!with!the!children!and!families!residing!at!the!local!Ronald!McDonald!House,!along!with!a!bagel!and!coffee!study!break!during!finals!week!to!encourage!interaction!in!a!more!relaxed!setting.!

Can) you) describe) your) affiliation) to) Duke?) What) made) you)decide)to)come)here)as)an)undergraduate)and)what)has)inspired)or)compelled)you)to)stay?)

I’m!a!double!Dukie.!I!came!here!as!an!undergraduate!and!studied!biomedical!engineering.!What!compelled!me!to!stay!at!Duke!was!a! mix! of! different! things.! One! is! the! culture! –! you! feel! the!community! here.! Secondly,! there! is! an! intellectual! vibrancy! on!campus.! I’m! deeply! curious! about! so!many! different! disciplines!and! at!Duke! there! is! that! interdisciplinary! distinction,! where! so!many! opportunities! are! offered.! After! graduation,! I!went! to! DC!where! I! was! working! at! the! American! Association! for! the!Advancement! of! Science,! one! of! the! world’s! largest! and! most!prestigious!scientific!organizations.!I!was!working!on!bridging!the!ethical! and! social! implications! of! science! and! technology.! To! do!that,!you!had!to!bring!in!various!perspectives.!!

In!the!process!of!doing!that,!I!realized!that!I! love!to!make!things!happen!and!love!to!make!things!run.!I!came!back!to!Duke!for!the!Cross;Continent! On!the!surface,!Engineering,!Science,!Policy,!and!Business!look!like!completely!different!things,!but!I!am!actually!doing!very!similar!activities!across!these!three!arenas.!In!engineering,!I!was!bridging!different! science! disciplines.! In! science! policy,! it! was! about! bridging! different! people! together.!What! I!do!now!is!bridging! leaders!across!public!and!private!sectors,!and! I! learn!more!about!the!patterns! of! underlying! ideas.! I! also! look! at! harvesting! ideas! and! creating! and! amplifying! their!impact.!I!also!worked!at!The!Chronicle!as!an!undergraduate,!so!writing!has!always!been!a!big!part!of!my! life.! In! science!policy,!no!one!was!writing!about! science!ethics,! so! I! started.!Now! today,! I!write!pieces!for!Fortune,!Wall!Street!Journal!and!the!Huffington!Post!on!an!array!of!topics.!!)

The!Fuqua!Coach!K!Center! for!Leadership!and!Ethics! (COLE)! is!based! in!Fuqua.!What!we!do!as!a!center!is!threefold.!The!first!part!is!thought!leadership,!where!we!draw!both!from!academia!and!industry!leaders.!We!think!about!what!is!coming!down!the!pipeline!in!leadership.!The!second!part!is!research.!Being!an!academic!center,!that!has!to!translate!through!our!work.!The!third!part!is,!of!course,!education.! Leadership! challenges! transcend! gender.!However,! one! thing! I!notice! through!working!with! our!female! students! it! there! is!something!about! society! that!acculturates! females! to!have!more!self!doubt,!and!to!question!themselves!a!lot!more.!Now,!if!that!idea!of!questioning!leads!to!wonderful!reflection!that!can!be!a!tremendous!plus.!However,!that!self;doubt!can!also!be!a!major!hurdle.!Our!Life!Chat!series! is!all!about!triumphing!over!times!of!tremendous!self;doubt!and!failure.!A! lot!of!times! I! see!women!hold! themselves! to!a!very! high! standard,!but! that! can! sometimes!mean!not!giving!themselves!enough! leeway.!Failure! is!okay!if!you! learn!from!it.!It! is!okay!to!take!risks!and!fail.!That!is!how!you!grow.!

When!I!was!an!undergraduate,!I!thought!leadership!was!more!about!position!and!title.!That!is!was!about!the!positions!you!hold,!rather!than!about!the!behaviors.!We!are!seeing!more!and!more!that!leadership! is! less! about! positional! power! and! more! about! the! ability! to! influence! others’!behaviors,! how! to! inspire! them! and! how! to! remove! obstacles! that! are! in! the! way! of! them!becoming!their!best!selves.!So,!if!you!were!to!have!asked!me!as!an!undergraduate!whether!I!was!a!!

What)inspired)you)to)found)The)SportsQuip?)

I!was!not!always!a!sports!person.!However,!I!noticed!a!dramatic!difference!in!my!ability!to!engage,!(and!a!big!part!of!my!job!is!engaging!with!CEOs)!when!I!did!not!have!sports!intelligence!as!opposed!to!when!I!did.!I!thought!that!if!it!was!helpful!for!me,!it!might!be!helpful!and!valuable!for!others!as!well.!My!team!and!I!noticed!that!there!are!a!lot!of!females!who!are!interested!in!the!SportsQuip,!but!also!a!lot!of!males.!People!on;the;go!need!one!spot!to!get!all!of!their!sports!intelligence!and!be!able!to!get!in!the!conversation.! I’m!not!about!the!stats,!but!rather!about!the!power!of!sports!to!showcase!the!human!potential.!It!is!the!ultimate!human!development!laboratory.!You!learn!about!how!to!overcome!failure,!resiliency,!and!how!to!get!past!the!No;s.!We!want!people!to!be!aware!of!the!larger!picture!of!sports!–!the!power!to!cast!our!attentions!on!the!important!things!of!human!potential.! It!is!not!about!balance,!but!rather!about!integration.!Not!every!single!part!of!any!given!moment!is!perfect.!That!is!a!myth.!It!is!really!about!having!priorities.!Understanding!what!energizes!you,!why!you!do!what!you!do.!For!example,!my! family!and!children!are!my!foundation!and! they!energize!me.!My!faith! is! a!big!part!of!my! life.!Those!are!the!places!where! I! retreat.! If! I!get!those!aspects!right,!then!everything!else!will!be!good.!I!love!my!job!because!it!is!about!helping!develop!the!next!generation! of! leaders,! which! in! turn! will! create! a! better! future.! You! have! to! find! the! reasons!behind! what! you! do,! and! focus! on! them.! Accept! that! nothing! will! be! in! perfect! balance.! Your!mental! state! has! so! much! to! do! with! whether! you! can! take! things! on! or! not,! so! it! is! about!maintaining!a!positive!outlook.!It!is!also!about!understanding!that!you!can’t!do!it!alone.!I!have!an!amazing!husband!and!an!amazing! team,!everyone! from!our!assistant! director! to!undergraduate!scholars.!The!credit!can’t!be!that!I!did!it,!but!we!did!it.!!

Rising!senior!Dominique!Beaudry!is!the!most!recent!recipient!of!the!Truman!Scholarship.!She!has!a!passion!for!social!reform!that!began!her!freshman!year!while!volunteering!with!Durham!Public!Schools.!A!Public!Policy!major,!she!was!inspired!by!the!Public!Policy!301!course!and!Professor!Tony!Brown’s!Social!Entrepreneurship!class.!These!academic!environments!helped!her!understand!what!we!as!university!students!and!citizens!can!actually!do!to!create!change.!She!notes!that!she!found!motivation!to!make!small!changes!rather!than!get!discouraged!by!a!seemingly!insurmountable!problem.!At!Duke,!Dominique!is!also!involved!in!the!Benjamin!N.!Duke!Scholarship!Program.!

Dominique!joined!BOW!during!her!freshman!year!because!she!enjoys!being!surrounded!by!strong!and!impressive!women,!and!she!found!this!community!within!BOW.!She!commented!particularly!on!BOW’s!alumni!mentorship!program,!and!spoke!of!her!relationship!with!her!own!alumna!mentor,!BOW’s!co;founder!Victoria!Woodbury.!Dominique!stated!that!one!of!the!strongest!parts!of!Duke!is!the!alumni!community,!as!its!members!are!extremely!eager!to!help!undergraduates!continue!to!better!Duke.!She!identified!Victoria!as!a!sounding!board,!who!continually!helps!her!identify!problems!at!Duke!and!determine!how!she!can!make!a!change.!!

1) First!and!foremost,!I!learned!about!professionalism.!Most!of!the!time!in!internships!and!in!your!first!job!out!of!college,!you!are!one!of!the!youngest!people!there.!You!need!to!make!sure!you!carry!yourself!professionally!and!have!people!see!you!as!a!peer!and!not!another!college!student.!Following!that,!accuracy!and!attention!to!detail.!In!the!real!world,!there!is!no!partial!credit.!In!my!experience!in!banking,!the!things!you!are!working!on!as!a!junior!person!are!materials!that!are!shown!to!clients!or!senior!management.!If!you!make!mistakes!in!a!pitch;book,!the!client!sees!that!and!it!reflects!poorly!on!your!work!product.!Always!make!sure!to!double;!and!triple;check!the!work!you!turn!in.!!

My!BOW!involvement!was!huge!in!my!personal!and!professional!development.!It!allowed!me!to!go!from!a!mentee!to!mentor,!and!was!hugely!important!in!developing!my!leadership!skills.!I!found!both!great!mentors!and!friends!in!the!organization!whom!I!still!talk!to!and!ask!for!advice.!I!got!to!meet!leaders!from!all!different!industries!who!helped!me!to!pinpoint!a!direction!in!which!I!want!to!head!into!later.!Another!resource!was!the!Career!Center!and!Bill!Wright;Swadel.!Bill!was!one!of!my!gurus!in!college!who!I!could!use!as!a!sounding!board!for!anything!and!everything.!The!Financial!Education!Partnership!(FEP)!&!my!relationships!with!Emma!Rasiel!and!John!Caccavale!were!also!very!impactful.!Emma!and!John!were!hugely!instrumental!in!my!personal!and!professional!development.!DukeEngage!Guatemala!also!allowed!me!to!see!a!different!part!of!the!world,!work!with!people!from!a!different!culture,!and!have!some!amazing!experiences.!Finally,!my!semester!studying!abroad!in!London!was!the!most!incredible!three!months!of!college!–!being!able!to!study!in!a!different!country!and!travel!to!other!countries!in!Europe!on!weekends!was!so!fun.!

An%Honest%Exchange:%Mentorship%with%Bill%WrightASwadel%

On!March!19th,!BOW!members!were!treated!to!a!discussion!on!mentorship!with!Bill!Wright;Swadel,!the!Fannie!Mae!Executive!Director!of!the!Duke!University!Career!Center.!Mr.!Wright;Swadel!joined!the!Duke!family!in!2008,!after!having!previously!served!ten!years!with!Harvard’s!career!program.!In!total,!Mr.!Wright;Swadel!brings!over!30!years!of!experience!in!helping!students!deal!with!not!only!their!career!choices,!but!their!personal!development!and!mentorship!goals!as!well.!

Mr.!Wright;Swadel!first!discussed!the!popular!topic!of!networking,!challenging!BOW!members!to!refrain!from!committing!the!“biggest!mistake”!of!the!networking!game:!connecting!only!with!people!when!one!needs!something.!Instead,!Mr.!Wright;Swadel!advocated!for!a!different!approach!in!which!both!parties!receive!something!meaningful!in!return!for!their!mutual!investment!in!one!another.!While!mentors!are!often!thought!of!as!being!the!chief!“givers”!in!a!mentor;mentee!relationship,!mentees!can!offer!fresh!perspectives!and!challenge!mentors!to!think!differently!about!situations.!Networking!becomes!more!about!listening!than!talking,!giving!mentors!a!chance!to!reveal!knowledge!and!allowing!for!mentees!to!absorb!those!insights.!“We!have!2!ears!and!1!mouth,”!Mr.!Wright;Swadel!mused!at!one!point.!“We!should!respect!that!proportion!”!

Perhaps!the!most!innovative!concept!for!members!was!Mr.!Wright;Swadel’s!vision!of!a!“Board!of!Directors,”!composed!of!a!diverse!and!multifaceted!group!of!mentors!that!best!embodies!the!interdisciplinary!interests!of!the!complex!individuals!they!represent.!Such!a!“board”!puts!the!student!in!the!driver’s!seat!of!steering!her!future,!allowing!her!to!“understand!the!scope!of!who!and!what!you!are!becoming.”!Because!we!cannot!be!encapsulated!in!a!singular!opinion!or!perspective,!having!a!“Board”!ensures!that!future!employers!will!have!a!well;rounded!description!of!us!and!will!be!able!to!understand!and!appreciate!our!full!range!of!abilities.!Two!heads!are!truly!better!than!one,!but!why!stop!at!just!two?!It!is!crucial!to!give!our!varied!abilities!their!appropriate!chances!to!shine.!

Personal!development!and!creating!a!sense!of!self!was!another!topic!Mr.!Wright;Swadel!brought!to!BOW!members’!attention.!He!encouraged!us!to!blaze!our!own!trails!and!not!mimic!the!pathways!of!our!mentors,!but!rather!discover!our!own!strengths!and!capitalize!upon!them.!He!compelled!members!to!reflect!more!often,!claiming!that!Duke!students!often!fail!to!engage!in!this!crucial!activity.!“Don’t!move!on!before!you’ve!finished,”!he!said,!advising!students!to!reflect!while!they!are!still!“in!the!moment”!and!can!change!what!is!not!quite!working!for!them.!Just!like!how!we!often!revise!our!essays!and!papers,!we!should!give!ample!time!to!consider,!and!perhaps!sometimes!alter,!our!life!trajectory.!

Professor!Buley!began!his!career!fully!believing!he!would!spend!his!entire!life!working!his!way!up!the!ranks!at!a!reputable!law!firm.!After!a!few!years,!however,!he!felt!he!needed!a!change!and!decided!to!try!a!position!on!Wall!Street.!He!joined!J.P.!Morgan’s!Investment!Bank,!and!in!2008,!had!the!exciting!opportunity!to!work!with!the!firm’s!new!Social!Finance!division.!He!was!attracted!by!the!chance!to!travel!around!the!world!as!an!ambassador!and!understand!how!capital!could!be!invested!in!developing!countries!to!stimulate!markets!in!a!way!that!pure!philanthropy!could!not.!This!experience!came!to!define!his!career!–!as!Professor!Buley!said,!“you!will!be!always!known!for!your!last!job”!–!and!he!rose!to!lead!the!Social!Finance!unit!as!the!Managing!Director!before!coming!to!Fuqua!to!teach!Corporate!Restructuring!and!Advanced!Social!Entrepreneurship.!

After!Professor!Buley!shared!his!career!journey,!BOW!members!asked!him!to!elaborate!on!what!his!work!in!impact!investing!entailed.!He!described!it!as!“venture!capital!for!small;!and!medium;sized!enterprises!in!Asia!and!Africa,”!especially!those!related!to!health,!education,!and!welfare.!He!described!an!example!of!a!call!center!in!South!Africa!that!worked!to!reduce!stigma!around!AIDS!by!calling!patients!to!order!their!medications.!By!receiving!an!infusion!of!capital!through!J.P.!Morgan’s!Social!Finance!division,!the!business!grew!to!serve!over!100,000!people!and!provide!much;needed!local!jobs.!To!illustrate!the!impact!small!businesses!can!have!on!an!economy,!Professor!Buley!drew!a!historic!analogy!to!the!development!of!the!Triangle.!Governor!Sanford!had!actively!promoted!small!businesses,!pushing!Raleigh;Durham!away!from!traditional!tobacco!farming!and!making!the!Triangle!a!central!hub!of!entrepreneurship.!This,!Professor!Buley!said,!is!the!impact!that!social!finance!aims!to!have!in!developing!countries.!

On!February!27th,!2014,!BOW!members!had!the!unique!opportunity!to!learn!about!the!experience!of!working!at!Google.!Chastity!Wells,!a!University!Programs!Specialist!based!in!Atlanta,!Georgia,!held!a!Roundtable!discussion!for!students!on!Sales!&!Advertising!at!the!firm.!After!introducing!herself,!Wells!briefly!described!her!various!positions!at!the!company!–!from!the!HR!Rotation!Program,!to!the!People!Development!team!assisting!Nooglers,!and!finally!to!her!current!role!in!developing!relationships!with!students,!faculty,!and!staff.!Wells!then!recommended!several!non;technical!Google!programs!that!Duke!undergraduates!can!apply!to,!including!the!BOLD!Discovery!conference!for!freshmen,!Immersion!program!for!sophomores,!and!AdCamp!for!Juniors.!

During!the!Q&A,!Ms.!Wells!entertained!questions!from!the!enthusiastic!members!who!were!eager!to!learn!about!the!firm’s!“inside!stories,”!especially!those!regarding!recruiting.!When!asked!about!Google’s!hiring!process!and!the!types!of!people!that!the!firm!looks!for,!Ms.!Wells!revealed!that!companies!like!Google!hire!forward;thinking!people!–!“students!who!are!able!to!demonstrate!their!impact.”!Being!able!to!communicate!your!contribution!–!whether!for!a!novel!science!project!or!tutoring!elementary!school!children!–!is!extremely!crucial,!especially!since!companies!weed!out!potential!interns!based!on!resumes!alone.!Even!at!Google,!Ms.!Wells!said,!there!are!plenty!of!opportunities!to!stand!out,!which!you!can!benefit!from!as!long!as!you!aren’t!“afraid!to!dive!in;![to]!go!above!and!beyond.”!In!response!to!another!question!regarding!her!personal!experience!at!Google,!Wells!disclosed!feeling!that!she!had!never!been!treated!like!any!other!employee,!having!always!been!given!critical!and!meaningful!work.!To!conclude,!Ms.!Wells!emphasized!the!bottom!line!of!landing!an!internship!or!job!at!Google;!the!company!ultimately!“looks!for!who!you!are!and!how!successful!you’ll!be.”!

On!January!15th,!Professor!John!Caccavale!joined!BOW!for!a!workshop!on!elevator!pitches!and!interviews.!Given!his!extensive!work!experience!in!finance!before!coming!to!Duke,!Caccavale!was!able!to!draw!upon!many!of!his!own!experiences!to!help!guide!BOW!members.!

! In!discussing!the!main!components!to!a!successful!elevator!pitch!or!interview,!Caccavale!stressed!the!importance!of!being!informed!about!the!firm!and!the!job.!He!told!BOW!members!to!know!the!firm!beyond!its!name!and!industry,!and!to!research!central!aspects!about!the!company!like!its!culture,!CEO,!and!current!events.!For!the!job,!he!advised!the!audience!to!know!exactly!why!they!want!the!job!and!reminded!them!that!the!first!two!years!of!a!job!often!look!much!different!than!the!job!does!in!the!long;term.!

! Perhaps!the!most!interesting!takeaway!for!BOW!members!was!Caccavale’s!emphasis!on!the!3!“Ds”!in!an!elevator!pitch:!

1. Never)Defend)Yourself!–!Confidence!is!key,!and!Caccavale!encouraged!BOW!members!to!exude!confidence.!Though!he!warned!BOW!to!avoid!arrogance,!he!emphasized!confidence!to!overcome!any!potential!doubt.!

2. Never)Define)Yourself!–!Employers!have!the!resume!of!anyone!they!interview,!and!redundancy!is!a!waste!of!time!for!both!parties.!He!recommended!taking!advantage!of!an!interview!to!elaborate!on!information!on!the!resume!with!anecdotes.!!

3. Describe)Yourself!–!John!Caccavale!emphasized!this!as!an!opportunity!to!differentiate!yourself!and!to!speak!passionately!about!a!few!big;ticket!items.!He!advised!members!to!sell!themselves!on!both!technical!and!behavioral!components.!

Caccavale!went!on!to!answer!questions!about!how!to!tackle!some!of!the!most!common!but!difficult!interview!questions.!He!highlighted!“staying!in!your!box,”!or!in!other!words,!being!true!to!yourself!as!a!critical!factor!in!answering!personality!questions.!When!someone!says!“Tell!me!about!yourself,”!he!suggested!looking!at!the!question!from!a!different!perspective,!such!as!how!your!roommate!would!describe!you!if!she!were!in!the!room.!To!address!a!weakness,!he!advised!speaking!about!something!you!are!actively!trying!to!improve!on.!

! Overall,!Professor!Caccavale’s!advice!to!BOW!members!prompted!the!audience!to!reflect!on!both!their!characteristics!and!experiences.!Members!left!with!the!confidence!to!better!present!themselves!during!their!next!interview!or!networking!event.!

BOW!kicked!off!the!internship!recruiting!season!for!consulting!with!a!luncheon!with!The!Parthenon!Group,!featuring!one!of!its!very!own!alumnae.!Current!Parthenon!Senior!Associate!Hannah!Hellebush!and!Associate!Hannah!Sieber!(BOW’s!2012;2013!Executive!Vice;President)!led!an!insightful!discussion!over!lunch,!sharing!their!insights!into!the!interview!process,!working!in!the!consulting!industry,!and!their!own!personal!experiences!at!the!firm.!!!

While!the!lunch!was!a!great!opportunity!for!BOW!members!of!all!years!to!learn!about!a!career!in!consulting,!it!was!particularly!beneficial!due!to!the!atmosphere!of!the!event.!Instead!of!simply!being!an!information!session!about!the!firm,!the!two!Parthenon!Associates!made!sure!to!create!a!conversational!and!friendly!atmosphere,!largely!driven!by!the!undergraduates'!questions.!The!luncheon!was!a!great!experience!for!all!who!attended!because!they!were!able!to!gain!knowledge!not!only!about!consulting!at!Parthenon,!but!also!about!the!interview!process!in!general.!!!

When!asked!about!the!biggest!surprise!they!discovered!after!starting!work!at!Parthenon,!both!Ms.!Hellebush!and!Ms.!Sieber!emphasized!the!fact!that!even!as!first;year!Associates,!they!felt!valued!and!saw!their!own!impacts!on!client!projects.!Additionally,!the!women!discussed!their!favorite!things!about!working!at!the!firm,!with!one!overall!theme!shining!through:!the!people.!Throughout!their!time!working!at!the!company,!it!was!easy!for!the!women!to!find!mentors!at!the!firm,!get!to!know!senior!consultants,!and!enjoy!their!work!with!the!other!passionate!individuals!on!their!project!teams!surrounding!them.!!

The!last!third!of!the!luncheon!was!spent!discussing!general!interview!tips.!Three!of!the!most!important!pieces!of!advice!I!took!away!from!the!session!were:!know!your!story!and!how!you!fit!with!the!firm!you're!applying!to;!show!how!you've!taken!action!and!created!impact!in!each!of!your!stories;!and!explain!to!your!interviewer!every!decision!you!make!when!working!through!a!case.!Overall,!the!luncheon!was!a!great!opportunity!for!BOW!members!to!learn!more!about!consulting!in!a!relaxed!setting!from!two!accomplished!professionals.!

On!Thursday,!April!10th,!BOW!took!a!privately;guided!tour!of!the!Washington!Duke!Inn!&!Golf!Club!(WaDuke)!with!its!Director!of!Sales!and!Marketing,!Jack!Schmidt.!Located!right!in!our!backyard,!the!WaDuke!has!been!a!student;friendly,!premier!hotel!with!an!award;winning!reputation!for!over!25!years.!On!our!visit,!we!got!a!glimpse!into!its!stellar!recipe!for!success.!BOW’s!visit!to!the!WaDuke’s!facilities!included!a!tour!of!the!kitchens,!event!ballrooms,!recently!renovated!guest!suites,!recreational!facilities,!and!outdoor!entertainment!spaces.!As!we!walked!through!the!hotel,!Mr.!Schmidt!spoke!at!length!about!the!WaDuke’s!history!as!well!as!what!makes!running!a!hotel!so!closely!tied!to!the!Duke!community!truly!unique!and!exciting.!After!the!tour,!BOW!sat!down!in!a!conference!room!with!Mr.!Schmidt!to!learn!more!about!hospitality!management!in!general!as!well!as!what!his!path!was!like!in!getting!to!work!at!the!Washington!Duke!in!Durham.!Mr.!Schmidt!additionally!highlighted!the!multitude!of!career!opportunities!available!in!the!industry!itself,!including!the!many!that!he!himself!explored.!Our!visit!finished!with!a!few!stories!regarding!his!past!experiences!at!hotels!in!Las!Vegas!along!with!a!few!anecdotes!regarding!celebrity!guests!who!have!stayed!at!the!WaDuke.!BOW’s!visit!definitely!provided!great!insight!into!the!hotel!and!hospitality!services!industry!and!was!a!wonderful!way!for!us!to!connect!with!another!impressive!business!in!Durham.!!!!

On!February!25th,!Economics!Professor!Craig!Burnside!took!BOW!members!through!a!crash!course!on!FX!trading.!Students!asked!questions!and!took!notes!as!Professor!Burnside!(whose!recent!research!focuses!on!FX!markets!and!government!financing!in!emerging!markets)!walked!through!different!currency!trading!strategies!and!spoke!on!the!merits!and!limitations!of!each.!Professor!Burnside’s!in;depth!explanations!and!diagrams!helped!demystify!this!topic!for!many!members,!particularly!by!focusing!on!two!popular!trading!strategies:!Carry!Trade!and!Momentum!Trade.!By!giving!applicable!examples!and!breaking!down!definitions,!even!members!who!had!never!taken!a!statistics!class!could!understand!when!a!certain!strategy!should!be!used!and!why!it!would!be!attractive.!!

At!age!16,!Kevin!Conroy!Smith!had!a!vision:!he!wanted!to!meet!three!people!a!day!for!the!rest!of!his!life.!His!goal!was!to!build!the!largest!network!in!the!world!because!he!wanted!to!be!the!most!connected!person!in!the!world.!Why?!He!wanted!to!build!social!capital.!!

According!to!Smith,!it!is!all!about!whom!you!know!in!life,!not!what!you!know.!Smith!spoke!to!a!captivated!audience!of!BOW!members!about!the!importance!of!growing!and!sustaining!your!network!and!the!importance!of!social!capital!in!today’s!society.!A!few!tips!and!words!of!wisdom!from!Smith:!

• Having!a!commonality!is!the!#1!factor!in!networking!• According!to!a!recent!McKinsey!study,!by!2018,!your)

network)will)equal)your)net)worth!• Every!single!door!in!your!life!has!been!opened!by!somebody!else!• If!you!don’t!demand!every!experience!to!be!at!the!highest!level!possible,!you!miss!out!on!

the!possibility!to!live!the!best!life!possible!• The!fastest!way!to!build!a!network!is!to!help!somebody!with!a!large!network—leverage!

Overall,!Smith!emphasized!the!importance!of!community!when!building!social!capital.!In!all!communities,!there!has!to!be!a!shared!value!or!a!shared!purpose.!For!Smith,!his!community!includes!people!with!a!common!purpose!to!change!the!world,!who!are!the!absolute!best!at!what!they!do,!and!who!have!an!understanding!and!appreciation!for!connecting.!In!order!to!build!the!best!community!and!reach!the!right!people,!Smith!did!his!own!research.!If!you!are!unsure!of!whom!to!connect!with,!Smith!recommends!doing!your!research!and!making!sure!it!is!thorough.!

Dave!Neal!treated!BOW!members!to!an!insightful!discussion!about!entrepreneurship!and!discovering!one’s!true!business!passions!during!an!hour;long!address!on!February!24th.!Neal,!the!current!Managing!Director!of!The!Startup!Factory,!has!been!CEO,!CFO,!and!has!additionally!held!general!counsel!positions!over!the!past!fifteen!years!in!multiple!information!technology!companies.!The!Start;Up!Factory!is!an!investment!organization!that!provides!entrepreneurs!with!a!three;month!program!customized!for!early!stage!startup!companies.!!A!two;time!UNC!graduate!(which!BOW!members!cordially!forgave!him!for!)!and!a!Stanford!MBA!holder,!Neal!remarked!on!his!own!personal!journey!through!the!entrepreneurial!world!and!gave!personal!advice!for!budding!entrepreneurs.!!

What!better!way!to!spend!a!sunny!Friday!morning!than!by!sharing!a!meal!with!Dean!Parker,!the!Chairman,!President,!and!CEO!of!Callis$Communications?!None,!at!least!according!to!the!young!women!who!had!the!opportunity!to!do!just!that!on!January!17th.!As!part!of!its!commitment!to!fostering!industry;wide!campus!engagement,!BOW!organized!a!series!of!professional!lunches!for!its!members.!These!small,!interactive!settings!have!allowed!members!to!personally!engage!with!top!professionals,!inclusive!of!lunches!with!Hannah!Davis,!CEO!of!BANGS$Shoes,!and!Jim!McNerney,!CEO!of!The!Boeing$Company.!

Chatter!subsided!as!Mr.!Parker!entered!with!his!family,!shaking!each!member’s!hand!as!he!made!his!way!around!the!room.!He!expressed!a!real!interest!in!the!students.!In!a!talk!full!of!career!insights!and!personal!anecdotes,!Mr.!Parker!actively!sought!to!provide!examples!personally!relevant!to!BOW!members!by!actively!seeking!the!audience’s!input!ahead!of!speaking.!!

Dean!Parker!is!an!advocate!for!sustainable!leadership,!robust!perseverance,!and!respect!for!all.!Having!started!his!career!in!the!pager!communications!industry,!he!quickly!learned!the!importance!of!adaptability!and!resilience!when!pagers!became!out!of!date.!Parker!was!able!to!

reinvent!his!business!first!to!promote!centralized!telephone!communications!and!then!eventually!more!modernized!cloud;based!communications!technologies.!He!credits!his!ability!to!make!these!transitions!to!the!extensive!network!that!he!has!built!over!the!years.!Even!today,!Parker’s!company!is!still!transitioning:!his!cloud!communications!company,!Callis$Communications,!recently!merged!with!the!eighth;largest!wireless!provider!in!the!United!States,!C$Spire$Wireless.!On!the!nature!of!how!his!company!has!progressed!over!the!years,!Mr.!Parker!commented:!“The!true!test!of!the!leader!is!what!becomes!of!the!organization!after![he/she]!leaves.”!!

Capital!One!representatives!flew!down!in!the!spring!to!host!a!dinner!panel!consisting!of!analysts!with!varied!experience!levels!and!backgrounds.!After!discussing!their!respective!positions!and!responsibilities,!each!panelist!provided!great!advice!to!our!members.!Following!the!presentation,!the!panel!opened!up!for!a!question!and!answer!session,!at!which!point!BOW!members!were!able!to!gain!valuable!answers!to!important!questions.!
