2014: Growth through innovation
The figures speak for themselves: in 2014, the Bosch Group filed 4,593 patent applications and hired a further 3,000 research and development associates, who work at 94 engineering sites worldwide. The main drivers of this success story are dedicated engineers whose tremendous creativity and unconventional ideas give rise to novel solutions, and whose work carries forward the company’s long tradition of innovation. In 2014, Bosch spent some five billion euros on research and development in order to further enhance the company’s innovative strength.
One strategic focus of these R&D activities is the development of solutions for the internet of things – in other words, connect-ing objects and sensors over the internet with software. For some years, Bosch has been preparing itself systematically for the connected world, not least by expanding its own software competence, which it then combines with the industry expertise of its divisions. Moreover, Bosch is the leading supplier of MEMS sensors, which are a key technology for the internet of things. Even now, the company is helping to connect vehicles with the internet, providing apps that make central heating controls accessible, and involving its own suppliers online in the supply chain for the production of diesel injectors. And thanks to Bosch technology, even electric ovens and other household appliances are already connected to the internet.
Bosch is taking mobility forward thanks to its expertise relating not only to connectivity, but also to automation and electrifica-tion. Its aim is to use this know-how as a basis for developing the eco-friendly and resource-conserving mobility solutions of the future. Even now, more than half the company’s total R&D budget goes into the development of products that protect the environment and conserve resources.

The sector combines the group’s expertise in three mobility domains – automation, electrification, and connectiv- ity – and offers its customers integrated mobility solutions. Bosch has been responsible for important automotive innovations, such as electronic engine management, the ESP® anti-skid system, and common-rail diesel technology.

The Bosch Group performed well in 2014, despite a weak global economy. Sales increased by 6.3 percent to 49 billion euros, and were thus higher than expected. The company was also able to further improve result. Bosch was successful in all its business sectors, offering many innovations. Furthermore, its intensive efforts to improve competitiveness were reflected in result. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose to 3 billion euros. The decision to purchase all shares in the former joint ventures BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH and ZF Lenksysteme GmbH was an important step. Strategically and technologically, both acquisitions are an excellent fit with the Bosch Group. However, they will not have an impact on sales until 2015.
The sales of the Mobility Solutions business sector grew at an above-average rate in 2014. Demand for driver-assistance and infotainment systems, as well as for advanced gasoline and diesel direct injection systems, developed especially well. Espe-cially in Europe and China, the Bosch Group benefited from the increased demand for new injection systems that meet the new, more stringent Euro 6 and China 4 exhaust emission standards.
The business year 2014
20 Bosch today 2015
Geographically speaking, Bosch generated the strongest sales growth in Asia Pacific. At just under 27 percent of total sales revenue, the region’s share of sales reached a new high. Growth was especially strong in China. The company also grew significantly in North America. This was primarily thanks to the Mobility Solutions business sector. By contrast, Bosch suffered a significant decline in sales in South America. In particular, Brazil’s automotive industry faced a difficult economic situation. There was also a decline in the value of the Brazilian real. In Europe, sales rose slightly, despite the continuing difficulties in the euro zone and tensions in eastern Europe.
The generally good development of Bosch Group business is also reflected in headcount. Global workforce numbers grew once more in 2014, by a total of 8,800 to 290,200. This figure does not consider the takeovers of the BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH and ZF Lenksysteme GmbH joint ventures, which have since been completed. If these companies were completely included in the financial statements for 2014, head-count would rise by roughly 68,000 to some 357,800.
Within the existing consolidated group, the most significant growth in associate numbers took place in Asia Pacific (which in this case comprises other regions including Africa). The number of associates there rose to 82,300. In Europe, headcount was virtually unchanged at 174,000.

Training and continuing professional development are very important at Bosch. Worldwide, around 6,100 young people were in apprenticeship schemes at the Bosch Group in 2014. Germany leads the field here with 4,300 apprentices. This is due to the strong tradition of dual education in companies and schools. In 2014, Bosch spent around 200 million euros on associate training. Some 515,000 associates attended 46,000 classroom-based events. In addition, 300,000 web-based training modules were completed.
The objective of all Bosch Group activities in 2014 is the mis-sion of securing the company’s future by ensuring its strong and meaningful development and securing its financial inde-pendence, true to the spirit of its founder Robert Bosch. The Bosch Group’s goal is to develop products and services that are “Invented for life,” that fascinate, that improve quality of life, and that help conserve natural resources. In the form of its new “We are Bosch” mission statement, the company has created a framework for the future strategic orientation of the Bosch Group.

Acting sustainably is a company value that was already very impor-tant for the company founder Robert Bosch. In today’s world, global challenges such as climate change, finite resources, and social standards make this mindset more important than ever. To monitor and improve on the success of this strategy, Bosch has defined group-wide targets for more sustainability. The focus of these targets is on associates and the environment.
In the interest of its workforce, the Bosch Group is especially committed to providing a work environment that is safe and conducive to good work. For example, the company has reduced the rate of job-related accidents per million hours worked by 54.4 percent since 2007. The figure now stands at 3.1.
Sustainability
Bosch invested some 200 million euros in associate training in 2014. On average, every associate attended 1.8 classroom training courses. In addition, associates completed 300,000 web-based training courses.
25
Audits since 2010: 367
The Bosch Group wants its products to be sustainable when it comes both to their use and their manufacture. Since 2007, the company has reduced its annual energy demand by 9 percent. It currently stands at 6,102 gigawatt-hours. Over the same period, Bosch has reduced its annual absolute CO2 emissions by 3.3 percent to 2.5 million metric tons. By 2020, the Bosch Group has pledged to reduce its relative (in terms of value added) CO2 emissions by 20 percent from their 2007 level. In reaching a 19.9 percent reduction by 2014, it has already come very close to achieving that goal. Not least, the company remains committed to the principles of social entrepreneurship upheld by its founder Robert Bosch. In 2014, Bosch donated 12.6 million euros for civic initiatives.
